And just to clarify. When I initially seen your video it looked like the weld was on the front and back of the seat? Or is it just yellow? Kinda of hard to tell. The welded repaired axles will have welds 360 around the seat.
The welds on the sides of your spring seats are the standard welds. The repair welds being done to some of the recalled axles are to the front and rear of the spring seats.
Thanks for the info. Just saw that paperwork on big boy toyz as well… Crazy. Wonder if Dana fixed the axles that went on the trucks after May 15th…. Or did they just weld them like the garbage recall solution showed….
Not sure if it was on the same paperwork that you saw, but on the recall report it says something like, existing rear axle stock had the weld repair done, and then new stock, with a thicker wall design, was brought in for use moving forward.
@@SM-ut6vb thanks, good stuff right there if it is true. I’ll be towing some heavy construction equipment to a job soon and will wait and see what happens!
That’s Exactly repair weld what recall is talking about. Assembly lines was using those thinner axles till end of stock. Your truck will not be included in any recall and if something happens then it’s covered only under drivetrain warranty. I agreed with my local dealer (great guys) that gonna load it up and do some off-roading to receive proper axle housing. It’s funny that those “variable thickness axles” are good enough for 9500lb but not for 12000lb - tells you that you can’t overload truck like u could with older ones where bumper was down on the ground.
Hi there - nice truck. As others mentioned, the retrofit welds would be found on the front and back ends of the spring perches. So you don't have those welds. Someone may have already mentioned this, but there's a white sticker on the axle tube just above the passenger side stock mount. That will include the date that the axle was manufactured. Can you take a look at that and let us know what it says (or post a quick video)? I am not a structural engineer or knowledgeable fabricator, but I can see how adding the welds to the front and rear of the spring perches would reduce the tendency of the tube to crush, but it also seems like damage will still occur if you come down hard on the bumpstops with the bed loaded to capacity. All of this is just speculation on my part. It'd be great to hear from people who actually damaged their axles to find out exactly what conditions that occurred under. I have a F350 which goes in for the weld repair this week. The Technician does awesome work. Once the repair is done, I am going to motor on and not worry about things unless reports of failure on the "repaired" axles start to show up. Enjoy your sweet ride!
Thanks for the info, I have been told and researched some of that info but I didn’t know about the axle manufacture date sticker. I will looking and showing a quick vid for sure. Just had the truck on the lift today and installed 37” tire on the rig. Will keep you posted. Cheers!
@@tcr2237 Cool. One of the guys has a video with links to all of the documents which explains what happened and the affected dates. If you search for the videos (probably DANA M275 Recall) you will find them. Good luck!
Search for the "Fords Fix For the Axle Recall" by BigBoyToyz. He has some great photos on his videos and he even took the time to link the documents. I think there are newer documents out, but his still contain all the critical information.
Yep. You have the welds in place. BUT, that may reduce the possibility that the tube once crushed, will spin as the brackets loosen. This may be adequate for the F250 based on its payload capacity but for the F350 (which I own) it does not address the reduction in weight carrying capacity of the axle. For those of use who pull 5th wheels on a regular basis and travel over some really bad roads (Colorado and Texas come to mind) its a real problem. I for one am very disappointed in Ford for not addressing this problem by replacing substandard axles instead of putting a cheap bandaid on what is a VERY expensive truck. Not sure "Built Ford tough" applies anymore.
I think ford or whoever makes their axles cheapened them up to save a few buck and a few pounds for mileage and profit and now it is biting them in the ass, never in my life have I hear of axles bending and leaking gear oil and the mounting perches. I'm sure ford figured out the cheapest fix they could for this issue, when in reality the whole thing should be replaced or cut the spring perches off, weld a half circle piece of steel over the bad spot extending a few inches either side, weld on new perches and reassemble. That's just me though, but it would be a much sturdier repair.
I'd be so frustrated (pissed) if I had just spent that much money on a truck and was told they were fixing what could be a major issue with a extra support weld. That's a very poor/lazy fix. I hope it all works out for the best, beautiful truck.
Right, crazy that this is an issue. I have towed 500 miles with 15k lbs on the hitch and not deflection what so ever. I’m hoping my axle is good to go… 🤞
Are there any cracks in the welds I saw some rust at the ends of the welded area. I believe this is where it would start from the twisting of the axle under load or axle wrap some may call it.
Not that I can see. Put it on my 10k lift and blew a seal on the ram so I couldn’t get it in the air. After I fix that, I’m going to put the truck on the lift and check it out in better detail. How about the lack of undercoating on this truck…
I picked up my 2021 F350 6.7L Tremor on Aug 7. Dealership in West Palm Beach, FL told me the axle recall was rescinded. When I look up open recalls on my VIN, there are none shown. I have the same side welds on the axle that TCR 223 shows in the video. My window sticker at the bottom center states "Special Order 04 20 21" and my door tag states "Date: 05/21". Not sure how to tell if the build was completed after May 15, 2021 or before.
Interesting. Great to have your feedback. I thought the build date was on the door and sticker should be the same. My truck was finished may 21st. As well. Seems (some people say) the side welds are the correction welds and others say they are the standard factory welds and it needs welds front and back. I honestly don’t even know the truth on what it what right now… guess we will find out after we put them to the test…
Not so. Welds do not increase the capacity of the tube thickness. You still have a problem. Also, if the tube starts to crush, those welds will crack and you still have a problem.
Had something to do with the torque according to ford. Your engine produces less then half the foot pounds… and torque is what crushes the axle. that being said, I think Ford has a bigger problem on their hands. Also, different axles per engine type. Ford is in CYA mode, we will get more info when more trucks have issues.
Seems like ford is having a lot of problems with it's super duty line of trucks, we have a windshield recall and an axle so far, something the STB or some other agency should be on top of ) and God only knows what else will come down the line. I had a friend who had a nice 2001 F150 and the windshield leaked, he didn't know about it till the wiring issues started, of course ford would do nothing, he now drives a dodge and has had little issue with it. I personally hate the mirrors on my pos stupid duty. They are the worst mirrors I have ever had the misfortune to look out of, no mater where it is adjusted I have a hard time seeing out the right hand side. I'm a retired truck driver and know the importance of good mirrors and ford along with others I assume totally fucked up when they went to that pos double mirror design. My 2006 F150 has a single mirror and I can see everything at a quick glance unlike the f250 ones where you have to look and study what is there. I occasionally drive a newer chevy van at work that has the same stupid designed double mirrors, I see even less out of those than my f250, I own a 2004 Chevy van with the single mirror set up and have such a good view out the right hand side it is almost unbelievable. Personally I don't even like driving the f250 with those mirrors so it sits in the driveway, a $52.000.00 driveway ornament. Yeah, I'm a disgruntled ford owner.
Yup, I think all manufactures are having issues, But Ford is definitely up there with their problems. No problems being a disgruntled Ford owner when you pay big money for big problems. I get the mirror issue. We have a 2018 Chevy 2500 and I hate those mirrors. They plane get in the way, all the time. I do happen to love my F250 mirrors though. I got used to them real quick and really like the double mirror set up. But like you said there should be options for a single mirror, especially for retired truck drivers like yourself and others. Cheers Sir and god speed!
Nice video. This goes along with what I was saying about the “250 guys” should be following this. You definitely have the welded repair axle.

This is the kind of stupid unforced errors that US manufacturers make that makes consumers worry about buying American made products!!!
Only on srw 350s
all these armchair mechanics talking smack their is no issue.
Buy a Chevrolet lol
