    Hey! Guess what. You're Awesome and thanks for watching. I promise this is the best DND tutorial based on a 30 year old Jeff Foxworthy joke you'll ever see. Stick around for more and vote in the comments for which subclass you'd like to next.
    Gloom Stalker, more like your DOOM Stalker. Ok honestly not my best but I'm tired. Seriously though I need to find a game to play this sub cuz its really incredible. Pray for the DMs that have to try to balance a game with the Gloom Stalker cuz... its gonna be a rough one. Have fun!

    I actually made a Gloomstalker before I heard about how good it was. My brother was running a homebrewed mega dungeon (ACTUAL dungeon, caves and the like), and we started at level one. My original plan was horizon walker, but I spoke to him about what we were doing in the dark and with me playing scout, gloomstalker felt like a better fit. He agreed and I took the subclass.
    My favorite moment was when he clarified the "invisibility to darkvision" was continuous and needed no activation or caveats. So, when I entered a dark room full of garbage only to find three "apparently humans" rummaging around without light sources, I guessed (correctly) wererats. I approached quietly so they wouldn't know I was there, then stood ten feet from them and spoke to them directly. Left an implied threat in the air, told them they would not bother myself or my party and we wouldn't bother them. They agreed out of fear, and I went back to lead the party through the room while they cowered in the corner. We were only level 3 at the time. It was so much fun. 10/10, would play this subclass again.

You even get some spells from being a Ranger... so you don't have to go all fighter/feat-heavy or something to try to balance the fact spellcasters generally are more powerful/fun than martials!

    I'm playing a gloomstalker in tomb of annihilation - I think there, any ranger would be good (even if just for the fact we don't get lost in favourite terrain) but the gloomstalker is just crazy. So many things will attack you at night which is where this class really shines...or, more precisely, where it disappears.

  • @Exaltable
    @Exaltable Год назад +203

    Ngl content creators really need to stop calling ranger bad after the Tasha’s features. It’s not even close to the bottom half of classes if you use those and the stereotype is just old and propagating misinformation to newer players these days.

    • @nojusticenetwork9309
      @nojusticenetwork9309 Год назад +14

      The optional features from Tasha"s were a decent start at improving the class but even then it still has problems. For one, unlike every other class, the optional features replace existing features instead of simply being added to the class. Second, Favored For, the Hunter's Mark alternative, is both weaker less applicable and still requires concentration despite being a class feature and not a spell.
      Beyond that, their spell options aren't exactly flexible for varying playstyles. It focuses on ranged weapons for combat, not much for melee and very limited in terms of support options. Ranger isn't the worst class out there but between it and the monk, it's foundation is shaky

    Fey wanderer I find has also been great for a more political circles oriented campaign. I also use drakewarden in another campaign but this works because it’s a small party and having another attacking “person” works out pretty good, especially when I want to keep to the back with the longbow. Also is just cute roleplay with the dragon who is slowing but surely getting growth spurts. I will say, I do love the gloomstalker and do play one in my Icewind Dale campaign. But I’ve also played the other two since I’m a ranger main. I usually ask a lot of questions about the campaign because you are right, rangers are very specific to the campaign they are in. The ones I picked are good for the campaign they are part of but I do tailor them heavily with input from the dm and with the party makeup in mind. Having that suddenly change, which it has before, was a huge curve ball for me to learn to adjust to. I had to change up a lot of my play style because of it.

    you can cure exhaustion on a short rest rather then a long rest...
    so... you literally never have to sleep when your party does you just manage on a 10 minute power nap.
    that is fucking stupid and I love it.
    you still have to do long rests to get spells or abilities back, but you can basically take every single watch, and put an end to THAT INANE CONVERSATION that happens at every long rest.
    no joke, I think that is my favorite feature of the bunch.
    permanent invisibility in the dark is pretty good.
    but being able to put an end to the "whose got first watch?" conversation instantaneously? That is worth a million permanent invisibilities.

    Here's an interesting and strong low level party build I have in a game where it's just the DM and me with two characters
    - Blood Hunter (currently level 2) variant human with 16 Dex that will take the Mutant Order with Archery Fighting Style and Crossbow Expert
    - Artificer applies Repeating Weapon to the Blood Hunter's Hand Crossbow - I believe this also means they can use a Shield while still making 2 attacks per round
    - At level 2 (when you get Crimson Rite), that's two attacks per round with +7 to hit and 1d6+4+1d4
    - At level 3, Mutant Order for the + max Dex mutagen - +1 attack and damage with both attacks, +1 AC
    - At level 4, Piercer feat for +1 Dex, another +1 attack and damage with both attacks, +1 AC and the reroll bonuses
    - At level 5, Extra Attack and the Hemocraft die goes up - 3 attacks per round with +10 to hit and d6+7+d6 damage, 20 AC with studded leather and a shield
    - Add some Goggles of Night if you need them as you don't have Darkvision

    So here's the problem with "rAnGeR iS bAd" memes: bad features don't make class worse if you're not forced to use them. You can effectively ignore favoured terrain and enemy - which yeah, are pretty trash, but they don't make other features the ranger gets any worse.
    Rangers get some of druid's greatest hits on top of your basic martial kit of fighting style and extra attack. No really, at level 5 compared to fighter you trade action surge and second wind for half-casting. If you go TCE, which you should, you also get expertise, 2 free rituals and foe slayer (though that one is minor, it doesn't consume your bonus action like Hunter's Mark does.) They might be no paladins or full casters - and they don't transition into tier 3 very well on their own (which is a shared problem), but ranger gets a pretty good package.

    Favored Foe is better than Hunter's Mark. It doesn't cost a spell slot and it doesn't cost a bonus action. Sure it does less damage, but it does damage earlier, assuming you're making use of your bonus action to attack. And why wouldn't you?
    I mean, if you're not a vhuman, I guess there's a case that Hunter's Mark might be better before you can get your first Feat and pick up Crossbow Expert.

    • @RenoKyrie
      @RenoKyrie Год назад +1

  • @Orcawsom
    @Orcawsom Год назад +6

    Hey! I made a comment on how I think Ranger is overhated last time and definitely am glad to see Gloomstalker getting love as the obviously best Ranger here. But I think base Ranger (With the optional features) is still a lot better than given credit for. First of all I actually think Hunter's Mark is a huge trap. Rangers are starved for bonus actions and they will need to reuse this bonus action anytime an enemy dies, you get more damage out of favoured foe and crossbow expert. Even if you don't take Crossbow Expert your Concentration is also highly contested as a Ranger and is best used on something like Conjure Animals, Spike Growth, or Plant Growth. Even at first level I would argue your slots are better used Goodberry, Fog Cloud, Zephyr Strike, or Absorb Elements. The problem with Hunter's Mark is that it isn't 'something to do with your bonus action' but rather that it's actively taking away from better options.
    Favoured Foe, Deft Explorer, and Primal Awareness are all big upgrades over their original incarnations. Favoured Foe does use concentration but you can just apply it and get the damage right out the gate without burning your bonus action, and Primal Awareness are all really good exploration spells that really help in a pinch and access useful information. Deft Explorer is just a series of super useful buffs, nothing to really explain and you went over it well in the video, What I like to think of it like is that the original Ranger features were all about bringing your best to nature, while revised ranger is about bringing the best of nature with you. While not as good as Gloomstalker, Drakewarden and Fey Wanderer are good contenders for your Ranger subclass.
    also, my obligatory 'can't wait for Rune Knight' here.

Say you're able to sneak up on a target (and let's be honest you were able to sneak up on a target with Umbral Sight, Greater Invisibility and expertise in stealth from Canny) you can cast Swift Quiver before a fight for a quite frankly absurd 5 attacks in the first round of combat. 8 If you dipped 2 levels in Fighter for Action Surge. And if you have an ally with Haste? 9 attacks on the first round of combat, all with advantage thanks to Umbral Sight, two of which with extra damage from Dread Ambusher and all able to have Sharpshooter damage added on.
    A Gloomstalker Ranger makes a strong contender for the best 'one rounding the BBEG and making a massive anticlimax' character in the game

    • @RenoKyrie
      @RenoKyrie Год назад

      A few wrong thing here
      Haste is Suboptimal, Bless actually does way more than Haste both in early and late game
      And Swift Quiver is good but idk some lower level Spells like Conjure Animals is better but hey, it and Lightning Arrow are good spells no one use
      You are right on Ranger being a really good Tank Melter tho, because unlike Paladin who need to waste resources, Barbarian and Monk who risk at being in Melee ESPECIALLY the Monk
      Gloomstalker is just, best Martial class period, theres no competition
      And you can even ditch Hunters Mark for Goodberry which other than being broken in Survival game unless you want to roleplay, its also a really good healing spell alongside Aid
      Also dont use Greater Invisibility, you litteraly have Fog Cloud and Pass Without Trace

    okay tbh when i make rangers i like to take favored enemy (the old feature) and pair it with deft explorer (the new feature). the additional d4 of damage is... nice but advantage on tracking a specific enemy is fun for flavor as well as useful depending on the campaign - you can also specifically pick humanoids to get around the pesky 'situational' problem.

    • @WinterPains
      @WinterPains Год назад +2

      Don't you have to choose 2 specific races if you choose humanoids?

    • @RenoKyrie
      @RenoKyrie Год назад +1

      But heres the thing
      You allready going to have a lot of advantage to begin with
      Favored Foe also only cost its own resource being equal to your PB, its just part of your attack and not a Bonus Action
      Sure you wont be a good Spread damager, but you will probably be the guy who instantly murder the biggest threat in the room with just 2 Attacks, 3 if we are using Gloomstalker since they somehow just do more attacks than the other Martials

    What is a Gloom Stalker?
    It's a high fantasy rogue. If you love rogues, but find the actual 5e Rogue class disappointing, it's the class for you. Even if you don't find the Rogue disappointing, it is the class for you, because after playing it you will find the actual Rogue disappointing.

      But people were too focused with Hunters Mark to forget Ranger's other spells is just BETTER
      Theres no way Ranger is as useless as Monks, Ranger has way more Party Utility even when Full Druid and obviously Sorcerer and Wizards are infinitely better
      People compare Ranger to Druid like comparing Arcane Trickster and Eldritch Knight to Sorcerer and Warlock

    • @RenoKyrie
      @RenoKyrie Год назад

      Its not just that it lags behind others
      Its *THE* behind other class, alongside Horizon Walker
      Colossus Slayer from Hunter only require target to be below max Health for Bonus Damage and later on at 11th Level gets Volley, a Action better than most of the Ranger Spells
      Gloom Stalker need to be during your very first turn of Combat, but its a bonus attack after your first Attack Action(Which procs again if you activate Action Surge and Attack again) and situationally become great at Darkness, which is pretty common
      Horizon not only need to be super campaign specific.... it requires a Bonus Action and a specific Range to activate their 3rd Level Feature bonus damage and is too campaign specific, the 10ft Movement everytime you attack at higher level is good tho but WOW its trash
      Monster Slayer is somehow worse than Horizon Walker, not only it still require Range and Bonus Action for Extra Damage, its also just.... useless with the fact that Rangers really dont have anything to take advantage Monster Weaknesses
      Gloom Stalker, Hunter, Beast Master, Swarm Keeper, and Fey Wanderer dont care what they are facing against, even outside of their intended enemies they can perform well, these 2 losers cant do anything
