Why you shouldn't buy one: -Less horsepower than EcoBoost -Less torque than EcoBoost -More expensive than EcoBoost -More expensive to maintain than EcoBoost -More problematic over time compared to EcoBoost -Only available in the over-priced higher trim levels -Very little difference in MPG compared to EcoBoost -Diesel fuel is more expensive in most places than gasoline -Less payload and towing capacity than EcoBoost
Hoss Cartwright Exactly..the fact that they aren’t offering it to everybody makes me believe they aren’t that confident in it. The reason Ford doesn’t offer the diesel for regular consumers is because if they did no one would buy the overpriced trims loaded with features no one needs.

I totally agree, you should be able to buy the diesel truck in a work truck trim with rubber floors. That would an awesome truck for hunting/camping etc. and not have to spend 60k+ to get it
Ford is going to offer it on the 302A XLT trim level to non-fleet buyers soon. What Ford needs to do is make the 3.0 PowerStroke available on all trims for both fleet and non-fleet buyers.

BowBowFlakka because most people don’t have that kinda cash laying around. And some of those who do probably invest it, finance their truck/car and then pay their monthly payments.

Maybe it depends on the dealer or they changed the policy later? I bought an '09 4x2 Ranger XLT supercab but they also had shit loads of base XL trucks in stock and anyone could buy them.

The diesel 4X4 would take over 190k miles to pay for itself over the 5.0L V8 given that that engine recommends 87 octane fuel. Even the 2.7L and the 3.5L ecoboost require only 87 octane, the 3.5L recommends 93 for towing, but the typical half ton buyer is not doing all their mileage towing - MAYBE 5%. Sure, in 2WD form, this engine makes sense, but in 4WD I think they fell too short on fuel economy to justify the price and performance difference.

Not a very good truck for towing in my opinion. The problem with all light duty trucks is payload. If you tow 11,000 pounds and your trailer is properly balanced you are using 1100 pound of payload capacity from the load on your hitch. Add to that the driver, fuel, etc, you are pretty much at your payload limit. Thats why I had to go to a heavy duty truck to pull my 11,000 pound trailer. My F150 was right at the limit with just me in it, so taking my family with me in the same vehicle I was technically over the payload limit.
I wouldn't go that far but they should realize even if the manufacturer says its possible to make sure they are factoring in the payload rating. Unfortunately a lot of people do not realize that is even a factor.

Pech Michael & Christina I wish they would push out the hemi with the e torque already. But they could see how the V6 with the e torque handles. I just wish chevy would hurry up and get that truck to market.
Pech Michael & Christina I agree with you. I'm not any means a gm guy at all, ram all the way, but I'm very interested in that inline 6 half ton diesel engine. That might be what converts me back to gm. I was a big gm fan in the 90's, and loved all the older trucks from the 3100's all the way up to the C/K trucks.
I think Ford will eventually offer the diesel engine option in all trim levels but they`re going to wait and see what GM & Ram does first with their trim levels and engine options.
Right now? Don't have any. 5-10 years from now when the 3.5Ls start getting longer in the tooth? You bet your ass we'll see it. Turbocharging gas engines is terrible for engine life. Only thing turbos are good for is airplanes and diesels.
Honestly there is no positive points for this truck compared to the ecoboost. Why buy this over ecoboost? It made sense for ram to have their diesel half ton since their v8 and v6 trucks are not as efficient, but ecoboost f150s are already pretty efficient.
True! And, if the turbos do happen to go out after 300k on my 2.7, it's still cheaper to replace those two times vs the up front cost difference of the diesel. It's hard to justify this truck: If you do a lot of towing, the F250 PS is a much better buy both short and long term. If you only do light or a little towing, then any of the other gas options would be a better purchase. MAYBE if the f150 diesel got 30+ mpg, you could justify it as a DD with occasional towing. But that price though...
It's not just ford, companies tend to put the new engine everyone wants in the trim level no one wants to pay for to force people to buy the expensive trim. Look at the previous generation Ford f150s, you needed to get the platinum our limited to get the 6.2 v8, same with the Nissan titan diesels, and most other cars with sought after engines. Edit: also companies won't put up with that garbage so they can't do the trim level thing to them. And really how much do you thing your saving in mpg by spending 40k more on a truck that gets 3-5 mpg better or whatever it is. How long will it take you to break even on the extra 40k?
Hugh Janus Apparently theyve whacked them in the higher trims for now as there is are limited 3.0s available from production, I believe Jag/LR gets first dibs on them. Further down the line I'd expect to see the more basic diesel wagons available to all. That said the diesel only makes sense in places where diesel is taxed lower, and thus is the same price as gas.
This was a perfect opportunity to blow the eco-diesel out of the water yet they come out with something that doesn’t beat it, and everybody is going to forget about it when that in-line six diesel drops. I was waiting to find out about this truck before I make decision on my next purchase
I am in the market for something that get good enough mileage for a daily driver (goodbye 3/4 ton and up), and something that can tow 8,000 pounds across the country occasionally, a diesel half ton is ideal, I see no reason to get anything but the eco diesel now.
3.5 ecoboost still has more torque and more horsepower and can tow more and more payload. And with the 10 speed and 4x4 gets almost the exact same gas mileage.
The payload you mentioned of 1950 lbs sounds like the f150 without the heavy duty payload package. Will the hd payload package be available with this engine?
Ford lost me with no diesel option on the XL/XLT. I don't need a luxury truck, I want to do hauling/towing and significant highway mileage. The top tier models are for that soccer dad, who hires a contractor to do all the work.
@The Fast Lane Truck I own two pick ups. A 2016 Silverado Lt with a 5.3L ecotec3 slightly modded. I also have a 2011 F150 with a 5.4L triaton bulletproofed. But I was thing about upgraded both this year. So your reviews this year will help me pick.
The truck I am really interested in is the rumored Hybrid eco boost. If the electric motors help the gas engine on take offs and hills and passing etc that could be a monster truck.
DEF is injected into the catalytic converter to reduce NOx. NOx gases react to form smog and acid rain as well as the formation of fine particles and ground level ozone, both of which are associated with adverse health effects..
Andre, I guess I have to take exception to your payback analysis. The base engine for the Lariat is the 2.7L EcoBoost therefore the diesel is a $4,000 option. Further, the manual only says that for best performance, 91 octane is required. I believe almost everyone will buy the 87 octane (Ford Powertrain Manager Paul Seredynski said "EcoBoost engines don't require premium fuel. Ford recommends that you don't go below 87, but all modern engines simply adapt to whatever fuel you put in." So the payback calculation is $4,000 plus increased maintenance costs. Also, diesel is about $0.50 a gallon more expensive that 87 octane. The bad news is a 4x4 combined mileage is 22 mpg for both the 2.7L on 87 octane and the diesel. I don't see how you pay more for the diesel fuel while getting similar mileage ever allows for a payback. The only way it'll ever make financial sense is if you're are towing or hauling heavy loads daily and the ecoboost is assumed to take a big dump in mileage while doing so. That said none of that will matter to the diesel dorks that will have to have one no matter what.... Still a great review Andre!!!!!
as far as recouping your cost difference over the 3.5L ecoboost, what happens to the number of miles you're stating it takes when you figure in the cost of DEF and any higher maintenance costs for the diesel motor vs the gas?
Thing that makes no sense to me is the 3.5 ecoboost is considered a luxury engine yet you can get that in a XL 2wd long bed single cab and its a rocket yet the regular consumer can't get this.
sickflow how so? If fleets can get the diesel in a XL it shouldn’t wheel hop what would change if a normal consumer could get one? And the 3.5 ecoboost doesn’t wheel hop to bad in a 2WD XL long bed.
$70k+ for a King Ranch half ton? Either we entered 10% more inflation this year or they're overcharging for the diesel option. Might as well get an F250 King Ranch at that point which is around $70k before discounts and incentives...(with the 6.7)
Prices aside, Im digging that the rest of the Big 3 (2 1/2, whatever you want to call it) is jumping on board with the half-ton diesel idea. I think that the ecodiesel is a great balance between power and fuel economy, and diesels generally outlive their gas counterparts by double for the most part (making them worth the added premium). A duramax I6 (inline 6) sounds interesting and so long as the 3.0L powerstroke isn't based on/around the 6.0L (heard more bad things than good), it should be a good engine for sure. it would be nice to get the diesel option without having to step up to a luxury trim thats already overly expensive and has a lot of USELESS and UNNECESSARY features.
I think the EPA ratings are based on this engine only showing up in high trim levels on the normal consumer side. The ecodiesel is in all but Sport and Rebel trim levels and thus it’s rating is derived from lower models. I think the 25 hwy will be a very modest rating for the 4x4 unlike the highway ratings on ecoboost.
Price difference isn’t just made up by mpg. The added maintenance and DEF factor in as well. Likely to be a little more than 30k to get back your initial investment. It’s just hard to pay more for less. Less towing, less payload, 125 less hp, 30 less tq, and less towing performance.
Andre, 3 liters is moreso to do with 2 things. 1) Having an undersquare bore to stroke (narrow bore, long stroke) and 2) for world deployment, where most countries (EU especially) tax on displacement.
Premium for the EcoBoost? I was surprised when I saw my 2012 Owner's Manual recommended 87 octane. I tried a few tanks of premium and saw no difference in performance nor mpg.
Should I buy a f150 diesel with the 10 speed trans or Chevy 3oliter diesel for 219 l tow a dump trailer once a week with 3 yard dirt do the diesel bags down what kind mileage you get
I really have to consider this Diesel. I will only be towing my 24’ camp trailer and range is my main concern. My brother has the eco boost V6 and it rocks. But if the Diesel will give me more range on tank I would be very tempted.
I really think that automakers need to review the way the vehicles are priced. If a loaded model cost more than 50% higher than the base model, that is crazy. In some cases with these trucks today the top of line models are more than double the cost of a base model. It's just hard to justify all that extra coin. I did appreciate the movement 10-15 years ago when they made more features STANDARD. I think it may be time to add even more features to the standard list even if that bumps the prices up a bit on the entry level models.
I don't really understand why they offer this diesel. If you're getting it for towing, the 3.5 EcoBoost has more torque, I believe. I just switched from a Nissan Armada 5.6 liter to an F-150 with the 3.5 EcoBoost. Other than the sound I have no regrets. That 5.6 Nissan did sound good though.
Need base model advalibal to reg customers. To keep up with competition. Ram offers their 3.0L ecodiesel in the Express and tradesmen for regular customers at cheap price point
@@reed7562 how did you take someone's comment about people not caring about fuel cost on expensive vehicles and turn it into a weak, moronic flex about buying a vehicle in cash over financing? Newflash: responsible adults can get vehicles for 0% interest and that is a smarter financial decision than dumping the full price of the vehicle in cash. The diesel is little slower than the 3.5L eco. Apart from that they drive the same. The diesel is very quiet. I traded the 3.5L eco on the 3.0L diesel. Better for towing. I didn't have the max tow package on the eco. If I had max tow I would probably keep the eco. But I love the diesel.

Right now? Don't have any. 5-10 years from now when the 3.5Ls start getting longer in the tooth? You bet your ass we'll see it. Turbocharging gas engines is terrible for engine life. Only thing turbos are good for is airplanes and diesels.
The Ecoboost has been out for 8 years already in the F150. Plus it was designed for boost.
Best Truck review I’ve seen so far
Very exciting times for truck fans/folks that need or want trucks, diesel lovers etc.
Bill Waterhouse Yeah, if you've got $70 grand to spend on them!
Good Job Roman
Great video. Love watching these trucks get pushed. Ford's owning it. Can't wait to see the comparisons with chevy and ram
As much as I like ford this is a huge disappointment
What were you expecting? If you want a real Powerstroke, get a Superduty.
I don't know why
Seriously, I was expecting more. This is ridiculous..
And with the 10 speed and 4x4 gets almost the exact same gas mileage.
warrior5223 Not the same mileage while towing, the DIESEL should give much better mileage when towing.
That is the only advantage it has. Unless you are constantly towing every week it is not worth it.
except the ecoboost is riddled with turbo, intake valve, and misfiring problems.
Can someone please explain what is diesel exhaust fluid ?
Is it to decrease smog ?
DEF is injected into the catalytic converter to reduce NOx. NOx gases react to form smog and acid rain as well as the formation of fine particles and ground level ozone, both of which are associated with adverse health effects..
Get a 12 valve so you don’t have to deal with that bullshit.
Does this engine use a gear driven oil pump ,or is it belt driven as on the smaller European ,four cylinder diesel engines?
USS ENTERPRISE The oil pump is driven directly off the front of the crankshaft, no belt gears or chain.
Nice review. Thanks!
Those fleet models are going to be snapped up quickly once they enter the 2nd owner market down the road.
I would buy base extended cab 4x4 diesel truck and rip out back seats. Do back seats come out or fold up?
Whether I buy a Ford or not, Andre, you did a good job on this review. Now have Roman send you 'down' some better weather for the next one.
Beatiful f150 with great sound
I just bought one. It's actually a little too quiet. I ran CAT heavy equipment for 23 years and I like the sound of a diesel engine.
Just another great review. two to re-coop your investment isn't bad at all. I just like the feel of a diesel. torq matters
as far as recouping your cost difference over the 3.5L ecoboost, what happens to the number of miles you're stating it takes when you figure in the cost of DEF and any higher maintenance costs for the diesel motor vs the gas?
2 Tall Paul 428 would rather maintain a 200k diesel than replace a 200k gasser though
Can’t wait to see and hear it deleted and straight piped!
this video popped up and disappeared yesterday! either way i'm watching closely for the towing loop test... good stuff!
I now want to know what does ford consider a fleet customer do u need to by more then one at a time?
www.fleet.ford.com/contact-us/faqs/#how-to-obtain-FIN
Looking forward to the 98mi loop, to see the real benefit in the baby powerstroke.
What is all those white specs flying by?
I wonder how much more each oil change costs than on the gas truck? That adds up pretty quickly on the big diesels.
What classifies a "fleet customer" is it a business tax ID? Farmers, etc?
www.fleet.ford.com/contact-us/faqs/#how-to-obtain-FIN
No it’s proving to them that you have a vagina if you wanna drive a Ford.
Thing that makes no sense to me is the 3.5 ecoboost is considered a luxury engine yet you can get that in a XL 2wd long bed single cab and its a rocket yet the regular consumer can't get this.
Shawn Prickett has to do with wheel hop.
sickflow how so? If fleets can get the diesel in a XL it shouldn’t wheel hop what would change if a normal consumer could get one? And the 3.5 ecoboost doesn’t wheel hop to bad in a 2WD XL long bed.
$70k+ for a King Ranch half ton? Either we entered 10% more inflation this year or they're overcharging for the diesel option. Might as well get an F250 King Ranch at that point which is around $70k before discounts and incentives...(with the 6.7)
RUclips User expensive half-tons are for the foreman
sickflow even our Foreman would balk at that price. You can buy super sport cars with that money 😮
How do they get the lights to strobe?
Anyone see what they did for an oil fiter? The EcoDiesel used a plastic housing cartridge filter setup. hope ford stayed away from that!
does this truck engine combo have start/stop for a diesel???
Yes you can disable it by pressing a button though
Can a rental car company buy it?
Andre, 3 liters is moreso to do with 2 things. 1) Having an undersquare bore to stroke (narrow bore, long stroke) and 2) for world deployment, where most countries (EU especially) tax on displacement.
Wouldn't mind seeing this motor in an Expedition
Torque is when the wheels are grabbed to terrafirma and using all gut to move machine forward, power is what makes the wheels spin!
Premium for the EcoBoost? I was surprised when I saw my 2012 Owner's Manual recommended 87 octane. I tried a few tanks of premium and saw no difference in performance nor mpg.
The price deal is definitely a perception being pushed by dealers stocking up on optioned out trucks
I love when andrew makes the videos
I’m hoping you guys can give us the amount of range per tank the f150 can offer.
Should I buy a f150 diesel with the 10 speed trans or Chevy 3oliter diesel for 219 l tow a dump trailer once a week with 3 yard dirt do the diesel bags down what kind mileage you get
Harry
No thanks I'll keep my Cummins!
You'll have to, have you seen the price of the new Cummins trucks?
I really have to consider this Diesel. I will only be towing my 24’ camp trailer and range is my main concern. My brother has the eco boost V6 and it rocks. But if the Diesel will give me more range on tank I would be very tempted.
I know its just shutter roll but @ 0:39 I wish the led headlights actually moved like that :)
Agreed, very fun video. And agreed, let’s see another brand instead of the usual Ford mashup
A person who drives a $70k pickup truck doesn't care about the price of fuel.
Jasper Ave Except most people finance like you because you’re too broke to pay 70k in cash.
Talking about "too broke" to buy it outright when your foolish remark is the antithesis to what any financial advisor would recommend. People who earn good money generally aren't stupid enough to make that decision. You have a tenuous grasp on finance.
what do you guys mean by fleet customers ?
Mustafa basically companies that buy them in bulk .
I went on Ford's website and was also very dissapointed to find the diesel only came in Lariat and higher.
Why isn't it available in the Expedition?
They need to put that engine in the expedition
Saw a Platinum In Scottsdale - 1,200 lbs. max cargo capacity??? My 2015 3.5L eco boost is 1,900.
Ike gauntlet!!
It's not a true diesel unless it smells and sounds like one... God I love the old 7.3 and 5.9!!
grow up
stickloaf shut up idiot!
John Doe gotta agree with stickloaf there. It would be like saying a gas engine isn’t a gas engine unless it had a carburetor and stalled frequently on cold mornings.
also u can run it on Straight Weggie Oil...
Alan Bowers two completely different things.. I also know you millenials don't know your ass from a hole in the ground, and your dumbass opinions are quickly discarded.
They all ready are on the market
If Ford offers the diesel on at the XLT trim, I'm buying it.
Hell yes. Great video. Great to see some real mud.
How does it drive compared to 3.5 EB? I dont like high reving engines.
Truck prices are nuts. 40k for an xl. All I can say is thank you new truck buyers for paying for half of my new used trucks.
I can't wait for someone to do a delete and put an exhaust on one of these
Can’t wait to see it straight piped
i guess for those who are curious about this engine is to look up the land rovers see how it has held up with them it will be basically the same engine except with a few mods for the ford trucks
I bet a fleet dealer salesperson would not care if you were a business or not if you wanted an XL Diesel.
