  • This class will cover the basic operation of Canon imagePROGRAF PRO and newer model Pixma Pro series of printers. Both have a powerful and FREE program available called Professional Print Layout designed to make your printing experience more streamlined and simple. PPL is available to use as a standalone application allowing you to drag and drop files directly into the program without going through Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom. It can also be accessed from within those programs and used as a plug-in. The basis for the program is to allow users to print multiple images on a single page with relative ease, eliminating the need for expensive RIPs designed for this purpose. It is also an excellent printing program for printing individual images on at a time.
    Canon PPL is compatible with the following Canon imagePROGRAF Pro Series & Newer model Pixma Pro printers: Pixma Pro-200/300, Pro-1000/2000/4000/6000/2100/4100/6100.

    Question…when adjusting size I want to set the Height and Width separately. Presently, if I adjust one, the other adjusts also. I want to adjust each to a specific dimension. How.?

    I wish to say how informative your instruction time is. At about the 1 hour point of the video you talk about the crop marks and the use of rotary trimmers and how when you use the trimmer you have to cut off some of the marks while cutting. The version of PP&L that I am using is v1.3.6 and in the crop marks settings you are now able to set the crop marks to include "Inside Crop Marks" and it adds additional crop mark lines to enable the crop marks for rotary trimmer use and other forms of print trimming. Thank you again.

    Special Technical Update for Canon ImagePrograf printers! I just noticed that Canon has uploaded a new version of Professional Print & Layout v. 1.3.6. There doesn't seem to be any new features or differences in functionality. From my initial investigation it looks like the Plug In Installer now recognizes the Adobe Photoshop Plug-Ins folder so you don't have to browse for it when installing the plug in. This works now for both Mac and Windows. The bigger improvement is that the Canon PPL Plug-In now works with Mac systems running M1 Silicon chips without having to activate Rosetta 2. THIS IS A BIG IMPROVEMENT! You can now run PS with M1 native code and use the plug in!. The documentation for Mac OS for this version simply says, "The internal modules have been updated>". For Windows documentation says, "The internal processing has been improved." That's all I got for now. I will post more updates as I make new discoveries so this post is very preliminary. As always if anyone needs help or assistance please let me know. Go to Canon's newly updated and redesigned Software Download and Support page to get the latest version of Canon PPL and your drivers. www.usa.canon.com/support

      Update! Actually I've discovered a number of updates in Canon PPL version 1.3.6. First, the gallery wrap feature has been updated to allow centering of the gallery wrap instead of sticking it in the upper left of the canvas. Also you can rotate your gallery wrap to save on media. You can also now select multiple slots instead of only one in Multiple Image mode. You can also resize multiple slots together and copy and paste them. You can also flip Headers and Footers to the Long side or Short side now. All good updates. Hopefully many more to come.

    hi can you help me please. I have got canon professional print & layout for my pro-300 but can not make it work, when I go to print I have this message on the printer... the size or type of paper loaded in the top feed is different from the print settings.. been through everything and can't make it print. this is the same in canons easy-photo print editor

    • @ericjoseph3865
      @ericjoseph3865 2 года назад +2

      Hello Andrew. I apologize for the late reply. This message usually occurs when you have loaded a sheet of paper in the printer or if you've chosen a media setting that is different than what is set on the software. They should be the same and if not the software will usually override the hardware. There is also a setting on the printer to not detect media setting mismatches. I would set the printer to disable this feature. If this doesn't work, I would suggest turning of the printer and unplugging it for 15 minutes to let the internal electronics reset. They plug it back and and try again. I hope this helps.

    Eric, this is a great video; Canon should consider adding this to their website; the manual is terrible.
    I have the following question which I don't understand how the product does this:
    Does the print resolution change when I resize the photo in the defined SLOT that I set on my page? How does the resize affect resolution, and how does print layout it? I really don't get this aspect.
    I usually resize using Photoshop before printing when necessary.

    • @aperezy17
      @aperezy17 Год назад

      Sorry, Eric, I realized that when you resize the slot, the Resolution has to change, so it can make it bigger or smaller. Is there in the product the resulting ppi when I resize the slot?
      I have another question: to make the file 100% to fit the slot I will have to export my photo and resize it before I work with the photo in Professional Layout? There are photos that, when exported the dimensions could be bigger than the selected paper size and 100% won't work because is bigger than the slot.
      Thanks, Eir, again, outstanding video. I am thinking of signing to your print therapy; sounds interesting
      Cheers

    Hi this is a great tutorial. My workflow is that I go through a bunch of images in Lightroom and edit them as I choose which ones I want to print (i.e. I don't choose and edit 5 and then print in one batch, I print to have rough sketches). I'm finding that I have to close the Canon programme after each image in order for met to add another image to print. I.e. I can't drag images from Lightroom as I'm working. Can you help?

    • @ericjoseph3865
      @ericjoseph3865 6 месяцев назад

      Hello nataschalibbert8345. When using Lightroom, you simply need to highlight the files you want to print in your film strip and go to File -- Plug-In Extras and then choose Canon Professional Print & Layout. Your files will be exported from Lightroom to Canon PPL if you are working from within Lightroom. You need to install the plug-in first of course. You can not drag and drop files from Lightroom or the film strip in to Canon PPL. Lightroom doesn't work that way. You are only seeing a preview image of your file in Lightroom and you are working in a Library of thumbnails in a Catalog and not the actual images files themselves. This is one of the tricky things about working in Lightroom that most folks miss. In order to drag and drop files in to PPL they have to be fully exported out of Lightroom as a JPG or TIF file and have a color space assigned to them such as sRGB, Adobe RGB (1998) or ProPhoto RGB. I also always size my file to the size I want to print in inches at 300 ppi. I hope this helps.

    Hello, first of all thank you for the great video.
    However, I have a question about standalone and plugin. In this video it was explained that printing via Lightroom is not that good, which I can confirm. And I'm talking about Lightroom's print module. It is said to either go through the Photoshop plugin or export the photo from Lightroom and then use it as a standalone. But what about the Lightroom plugin? The photo is then also exported from Lightroom to Print and Layout, or is that the worse way? And in case I need to export the photo from Lightroom to get the best results, with what settings should I export the photo then? So as a tiff it is clear to me, but which color space and which other settings?
    I would be very grateful for an answer!
    Many greetings

    Hi and thank you for a fabulous tutorial. I am having a problem with this software, I am using an image prograf 300 and a MacBook. Sometimes I can drag and drop and open files in the software, but most of the time I can't. I have no idea why. they are saved as tiff or jpeg, and even going into the menu and opening the files through the software doesn't work. Can you suggest why this might be?

    • @ericjoseph3865
      @ericjoseph3865 2 года назад +1

      Hello Lottie's Cottage. In order to use Canon PPL as a standalone application these specific criteria need to be met. I would check the color space of your files. The files have to be formatted as TIF or JPG, PDF, PSD and PSB files won't work in standalone mode. They also have to have a color space assigned such as sRGB, Adobe RGB (1998) or ProPhoto RGB. You can not use files that are Grayscale , No Color Space assigned or CMYK. Hope this helps.

    Eric, Thank you for posting this! I watched it a couple of times. I print greeting cards from my oil and acrylic paintings. I was having issues with print houses in that there seemed to be a gray film over the images, I was told to send CMYK files to them, it didn't seem to help. I decided to print my own cards. I bought a Canon ImageProGraf 300 (I love it!), I'm using Professional Print & Layout. I use tiff files and you said new printers can handle RGB (so not trying to convert to CMYK). I followed your set up suggestions for Professional Print & Layout and used the correct setting for the card stock I'm using. Alas, still a bit of a grey film even though the image with soft proofing does not show any film on my monitor. Do you have any suggestions for setting or pre image processing I can try. Thanks!

    I would like to use CPPL stand alone on my (little used) PIXMA Pro-100 but, when I go to the Canon download page, it does not show it. The page also detects my OS as Catalina but, I am on newest Monterey with Mac mini M1. I found out, inexplicably, that the web site hides Monterey at the top of an up scroll list of OS as version 12. Not as Monterey and, it does not detect 12.
    But, it seems that, inexplicably, CPPL stand alone does not work on PIXMA Pro-100?!
    or is this just the awful web site Canon runs for its products blocking CPPL from downloading for no reason?
    Any ideas? I do not own any newer Adobe products and the ones I do, do not take the plug in or do no work on Monterey. I use NX Studio and (reluctantly) COP 20.

    • @ericjoseph3865
      @ericjoseph3865 2 года назад

      Hello Joseph. I apologize for the late reply. You've got a number of issues all going on at the same time so here are the responses in order of how you've written them. Canon PPL is not compatible with the Canon Pro-100 so it is not listed as an option to download. You still have to use the older program Canon Print Studio Pro with that printer. Canon PPL is only compatible with the Canon Pro-200, 300, 1000, 2000 and on up. Interestingly not many pages where the Mac OS is automatically detected is actually detecting anything past Catalina on most of the websites I've visited even if you are on Big Sur or Monterey. You have to manually select your version of the operating system from the dropdown menu. This happens on Epson's website too. Probably more of an Apple thing. Not to worry though. The versions of the software listed under Catalina are the same as for Monterey. On your Apple M1 issue, you have to run Adobe PS or LR under Rosetta 2 to get the plug ins to work as Canon PSP and PPL are not M1 native yet. Adobe stopped allowing non-M1 native plug-ins to work with PS running M1 native. If you want the plug-ins to work you have to do a single right click on the Adobe Photoshop program icon and choose a little button that says "Open using Rosetta." When you reopen PS you'll see your plug-ins appear again. I hope this helps.

For the Canon Pro-200 the recommended setting is Photo Paper Pro Platinum.

    About the macos airprint when adding the printer, to avoid this must you connect the printer with a cable? It just goes directly to airprint I dont see any other option. Im using macos monterrey and canon 2100 printer. I do not have it connected by a lan cable. I suppose you must connect via a LAN cable? or USB cable 🤔

    • @ericjoseph3865
      @ericjoseph3865 2 года назад +1

      Hello JD G. It is always better and more reliable to connect to your printer via a USB or Ethernet cable. I don't usually recommend printing via Wi-Fi. You can, but you are limited to the speed of your Wi-Fi network which is usually much slower than printing via a cable. That being said, there is a new bug in Apple's resent updates to Mac OS Monterey that is keeping folks from installing the standard driver as it is defaulting to the more limited functionality AirPrint Driver. The solution is to delete the printer from the Printers & Scanners control panel and to reload it making sure to not load the AirPrint driver and actually choose the drop down menu where it says "Use:" and select the menu item named Select Software. Then you can search for the driver and select it and then add it. It is an extra step than we are used to but it solves the problem and allows you to load the actual correct driver. I hope this helps.

    Just to clarify that if using a glossy or luster paper, I'm using Moab Lasal Luster, under Media Type, select Pro Platinum rather than Pro Luster, correct? Would you mind expanding on that?
    Thanks!

    • @ericjoseph3865
      @ericjoseph3865 2 года назад

      Hello Devin, Media Type settings tell the printer how much ink to spray on the paper and what type of ink to use, etc. Pro Platinum and Pro Luster are identical media type settings although you wouldn't know that unless you looked at them using the Canon Media Configuration Tool. They both spray Photo Black ink and both use a Medium-High ink load. The difference is really just the name so in this case you can use either one. Canon named them differently so that if you buy their Canon brand papers of the same name you easily know what media setting to use. Epson does this on their printer drivers as well. Third party manufacturers will build their profiles on whatever base media type setting they feel is best for them and if you are using their profiles you should use the media type setting they recommend. This is generally listed on their website. For me and our customers I have standardized for Canon Photo Paper Pro Platinum for all glossy and luster type inkjet papers on Canon printers. On Fine Art Matte papers I recommend using Highest Density Fine Art Paper. For thinner Matte papers and Matte Canvas I recommend using Heavy Weight Fine Art paper. I hope this helps.

I have a canon pro 1000 and it seams to limit me to 35 papers but during your tutorial, you stated that you added more than 35 papers. Is this because you also have a pro 4100 which allows for more papers or is there some box that I have checked or need to un-check?

    Or PSP, I choose the paper size etc, the preview shows the image fitting within the borders of the layout, but when I print, part of the image is cut off. Is anyone else having a similar problem? I have MacBook Pro OS Mojave. Thanks so much for your great informative video.

    • @ericjoseph3865
      @ericjoseph3865 2 года назад

      Hello Marisol. In order to answer your question it would be helpful to know what printer you are using, what the size of your image is and what paper size you are choosing. On a Canon Pro-1000 or other desktop printer you can print within about 1/8 inch of the edge of a sheet of paper as long as you choose a paper size that does not have the words in parentheses (Margin 25). These paper sizes force a 25mm margin top and bottom and unless you have Display Printable Area checked in the File - Other Settings menu you may not be aware from the preview that you are cutting off your image. The preview at least should show a lighter area if your image is getting cut off. The (25mm margin) sheet sizes are for folks who are having issues with head strikes on the corners or edges of their paper due to paper curl and the printing starts 25mm in from the leading edge of the paper and stops at 25mm within the tailing edge. If you are using a Canon 24 inch or larger printer and you are printing on sheets you can not print within 1/8 inch on the top and sides of a sheet of paper or within 3/4 at the bottom as the printer needs to grab on the sheet of paper there. Same thing applies when previewing your image either using the Display Printable Area feature. Also check to see that you are using the most up to date version of PPL which is now 1.3.0. I hope this helps. If you still need assistance please email me at etjoseph@freestylephoto.biz and we can set a time to meet via Zoom and get you all fixed up.
