Hallelujah! Someone else who has been struggling with lightroom printing. I'm running a Pro200 and have had exactly the same problem as you and arrived at the same solution after a full week trying to sort it out. In my case lr would print a b&w picture as greens. When the printer controlled the colour I got a perfect image, when I printed through photoshop it printed perfectly and when I used the Canon software it printed perfectly. This suggested that the problem is with lightroom despite everyone telling me it was something I was doing. The only thing I can add is that during my research, I came across a bit of information that when greys print green it would suggest no icc profile is being applied (if it prints magenta then both the printer and lightroom are applying icc profiles so on effect you get a double profile). This would suggest that there is an error/bug in lightrooms print module where it isn't applying a icc profile even though you/we are specifying it.
Scott...glad this has helped. Just to clarify, when printing to my Canon PIXMA PRO-10S, Lightroom was fine; it's with the latest model that I was / am having issues. May I ask...are you Mac or Windows based? The reason I ask is to see if you have the AirPrint utility working in Apple? If you do, then turn it off / don't use it. I've been speaking with a print house lately and they tell me that AirPrint also impacts the quality. They sent me an example and sure enough it's clear to see.
@@glyndewis Hi Glyn, I'm running a new pro200. I had a pro-1 before and had no issues with it (except a worn out print head which is why I upgraded). I'm also a Windows machine, not a mac. I've tried pretty much every combination of settings with print drivers, colour corrections (manual and auto), uninstall, reinstall but keeping coming back to lightroom just not changing its output despite being told to do so. Photoshop seems to use a different engine (or at least the ui is different) and works fine.
Hi Glyn, I think your issue is that you are perhaps double profiling in Lightroom and this is causing color variations as you describe. I have tested this before and again after watching your vid and there is no discernible difference in both prints if you are setting up Lightroom correctly. When using Lightroom to print first go into the Print driver properties and double click on where it says ‘color/intensity Manual Adjustment’ select the ‘Matching’ tab and in the box ‘color correction’ choose ‘None’. Click ok. This means the print driver is not controlling color and allows the printing application, in this case Lightroom, to control color. Once you have done this In Media Type load the media type you are printing on. Then within Lightroom Print Module and in particular in the Color Management section load the ICC Profile for the media you are printing on and press print. If you have followed these steps correctly your print will have exactly the same hues and tones as the version you printed using Canon Professional Print & Layout.
Dave thanks for replying BUT I can confirm that the Printer Driver is not playing any part of this at all; it's off and not selected in Lightroom...I'm aware that this is where a lot of people can go wrong unintentionally when they have 2 profiles conflicting with each other and so causing incorrect prints, BUT in my case, Printing is only being defined by the Printing Application and the Paper Profile. Thanks for jumping in though...if folks go through comments then this will be great for them to see and go check. Cheers ps> Are you Mac or Windows based?
@@davewynne6857 YES, YES, YES - problem solved. I hated the idea of having to use an external app for printing. LR has always been my choice, but always on Epson printers. Epson drivers make it easy to turn off printer colour management. Canon printers seem to bury the important stuff several layers down. I found check box to stop the print driver from colour correcting thanks to Dave and now my prints match Canon PPL exactly. I print with the LR print module and use the correct ICC profile for the paper and voila! Thanks Dave!!!!!!
Thanks for sharing this. I was so annoyed because lightroom gives a warning saying when using custom profiles, disable the color managment from the driver. but I could never find this option.
First of all, really really useful video Glyn, many thanks. Just got a new Canon Pro 300 and I am trying to get it set up properly. Coming to this a bit late, but can you (or any other Mac users here) please advise here I can access the Print Driver Properties to check for this issue mentioned by Dave? I've looked under System Preferences/Printers & Scanners/Options&Supplies - there are very limited options here and none at all that mention "color/intensity Manual Adjustment". I think I did read somewhere that Mac OS turns off Printer Color Management by default, but a bit of reassurance would be nice. Thanks.
Very helpful video, answered a puzzle I had. I purchased a Canon PRO-300 about 6 months ago, my first pro-level photo printer. From the start, I was using the Canon PPL plug-in for LrC to do my printing. In general, I was getting good results. But as part of a digital printing workshop I'm taking now, I decided to try printing an image using both the Canon plug-in, and the LR Print module. Well, the results were drastically different, with the print direct out of LR way inferior to the print using the Canon plug-in. And I double checked all my settings to make sure I was doing the exact same thing with each print method. I'd like to understand better why the discrepancy, but this video reassures me that it isn't anything I was doing wrong. Going forward, I will be sticking with the Canon plug-in for all my prints!
Out of all the sites that discuss this subject with the Canon line of printers (I’ve got the Prograf 1000 A2 ) this tops them all by far ,excellent work ,TOP OF THE PILE ! . Had issues with incorrect work flow from the beginning, following the instructions from the print manufacturers from Photoshop,”Photoshop controlling printer “ etc . In the case of Canon printers , enclosed instructions should be , “ subscribe & follow these instructions on this video ) I’ve printed 3 A2 prints & for the first time they absolutely match the screen (although visible on you video it’s worth mentioning saving the image as Adobe 98 from light room or Photoshop. The canon software is a dream . Photoshop is no match for the canon print software. I’ve had no failures at all printing in this way , I’ve subscribed & liked 👍🏻 many thanks ,Dave
Dave this is so good to hear…thank you so much…you’ve made my day! Since posting I now use the software as a plug in, in Lightroom so send images straight to it in ProPhoto RGB which works so well as the printer is capable of printing a colour space outside of Adobe RGB. Thanks again…really appreciate it 👍🏻
Glad I found this. Just printed my first two photos using the CPPL today and got good results after watching your "Don't use AirPrint" video yesterday which was the springboard to turn it off on my Canon Pro-200. It made a positive difference. I will watch this again to make sure I get some settings right that I missed today. Your videos are always great and useful. Thanks.
Absolutely loved this video. I never print my stuff, and this is exactly what I’ve been most curious about. Please do more how to print/printing for beginners. I so appreciate all of your videos. Happy holidays to you & yours. Thank you.
Excellent video with great information. I've never had any luck printing from an Adobe product. Some years ago, I had the Canon Pro-10. Very finicky printer. I dreaded using it. Long story short, I very recently bought the Canon imagePROGRAF Pro-300. It was like falling in love again. I saw elsewhere that the Canon Professional Print & Layout app worked best. However, some of the items you ticked were grayed out when I tried to select them prior. After watching your video, don't know what was different, but they worked this time. And it made a difference. The colors were a tad more true and the full range of the grayscale showed a subtle difference between the 90% and the 100% black (which it hadn't before). Thanks, Glyn!
Hey brother! I love all your videos and this one is just another amazing example of your care and dedication to share great information! Thank you so much. I am looking into buying a printer and am torn on either going with the cannon pro 1000 or the 300. Do you have any inputs or recommendations you would like to share? All the love man, thank you again.
Thanks for the kind words As for the 300 or 1000 ... both are great BUT it depends on how much printing you're going to do and how big you really need / want thte prints to be. Once you can asnwer that then there's your answer 👍🏻
@@glyndewis So true. thank you so very much for taking the time to reply. Indeed those are questions I will have to answer, just thought I would ask and hear your opinion. Some people will say that the 300 offer richer blacks and others will say that you will save much more in ink if you go with the 1000. Those are different parameters to consider but I like your answer and ultimately will come down to what you wrote. Thank you so very much. I am big fan of your work. Thanks again.
An absolutely massive thank you!!! since upgrading my Mac to latest OS my colours of printer went out window. I was having a complete nightmare as I was doing everything right in Lightroom but they looked pants. Using Print Studio Pro, but following same guidance (as I've a Pro-10s) you've fixed it. Ever so so slightly darker than my calibrated screen but a damn near 95% accurate print. Thanks so much Glyn.
A couple of times a year I will run into the same issue with prints suddenly coming out with desaturated colors. I use an Epson but the problem is usually solved by deleting the printer and reinstalling it. Just takes 30 seconds. I agree about printing thru LR. I never need to touch the resolution setting as every print, regardless of size, prints at optimum resolution. It is so much easier than when I printed with Photoshop, which I did for 20 years. Thanks for your vid!
Hi Glen, I am printing on my Pro 300 with Canon photo paper plus glossy II. My photos print beautifully with Media type set to that paper, color mode at: use ICC profile, printer profile at: Pro 330/plus glossy IIA and rendering intent: perceptual . I assume these settings are correct? I have Epson photo paper left over from a four year miserable Epson P600 experience. 🥲 Is there an “easy” way to use the Epson paper and their Epson published ICC profiles with the Pro 300. As I become more proficient with the Pro 300 I will transition to the better quality paper that you suggest. Thank you
Hi Michael. Great hear that you're getting great results with t he Pro 300. Your settings look good to me; only one you 'may' test is the rendering intent to see if there's any noticeable difference (improvement) using relative...always worth just soft proofing to see if there is. As for the Epson paper you have left over, you could give it a try downloading their ICC Profiles but just make sure to check what the equivalent 'media type' will be for the Canon settings...if that makes sense. Please do keep me posted
I have had these problems and thank you for this I am going to try this. I know is expensive and I do not like wasting it. I have an HP printer so not sure the difference.
I used one of those printer evaluation charts with the strawberries on it like you showed. They looked so much brighter and more correctly colored red once I made some adjustments and got the correct color setup going for my Canon printer.
thanks for this video!! I think it's really useful, I use Epson printers but I'll try to get the same results, colour prints look really good, but black and white are really disappointing... probably I'll get better ones after applying some of the things you have explained in the video. thanks for all the videos!!!
One of the best videos ive watched in a long time. I am just entering the world of home printing and have purchased and installed a Canon G5050 printer. Its not in the same league as the Pro300. I have the Canon Easy Photo printer software and use LR for my editing and workflow. Do i need to install another profile software to get the best printer settings? I have a starter pack of high glossy paper (180gsm) as a start so i can fine tune the colour profile. Can you advise what i should be using to get the best results? Use page set up and printer properties through LR? Print resolution is default to 240ppi? Many thanks.
Hi Jason...thanks so much for the kind words about the video; glad it helps. As for your questions, the advice I can give most of all is to not use wireless printing. Wireless printing doesn't give access to the full driver so you won't get the best results by far. Wired connection is the way to go. Where are you based? UK? USA? etc... I would advise first of all using photo paper from a company that also provides generic profiles that you can install. First off though, try using Canon Papers and using the profiles they provide built in. Hope this helps.
Thank you. I'm so glad I've found your channel. It has been a challenge to print and match colours with LrC to a Canon printer and I've watched a number of tutorial videos to improve my print output to something I was happy with. Your video is undoubtedly the most helpful .Glyn, your approach and style of presentation has meant I've subscribed....oh and unsurprisingly I'm also very happy with the test print I've just done using your methodology. Thanks again.
@@glyndewis Thank you. While I got you, have you used 'ps super resolution' on drone photos yet? I'd love to see a video on that. I've just started playing around with it. No conclusions yet.
Nice video Glyn - if you could do a video on the cost of home printing that'll be great - cost of printer, guidelines of prints per cartridge, how long cartridges last etc - all open ended questions but rough guidelines would be great as I think more photographers would start printing if they knew the cost
Thank you Glyn,,,learned a thing or two. We have 3 Canon printers (Pro1000/100 for client work) and use Qimage One (Mac OS) rather than Canon’s print software PS plugin. The features are the same but Qimage One has a ink channel scheduled purge function which is a no fuss way to keep the nozzles on the pigment printer clean and avoids a nozzle cleaning cycle before each print run by timing the purge before the printer’s internal countdown timer triggers its own nozzle clean when the printer receives a print job.
Thank you so much this video was so helpful! I was intimidated by getting into printing and using my printer but after watching this I am well on my way! The bonus...my prints turned out perfect! Thank you!!!
Thanks a lot for this Glyn 👍 I was having exactly this problem - same kit same problem. I now follow exactly what you do and things are now fantastic 👍👍👍👍👍
Thx so much for the video. I repeated all your steps and get the same results. So far so good. But what I find irritating that the greens in the color boxes (below the stone balls) are totally different when printed (a lot darker). I tried this on different monitors but the greens still are different. This is also visible in your video when you show the Eval print sheet on screen and when printed
@@glyndewis Hi Glyn, revisited this video precisely because I am getting washed out Reds and Greens from My Pro 1000. The revelation was printing without the ICM driver, and letting the printer manage the colour. What a difference! So, nothing wrong with the printer. Tried CPL as standalone, and called via Lightroom, in each case with the Printer managing the colour, same result. So for me its my custom icc profile (I think) which is desaturating the prints. I am printing from a Mac(Monterey), so I have no way to 'double profile' so its either the Profile or the Printer not both. I am gong back to the Paper suppliers to see if I can get the profiles redone, or perhaps making my own profiles is the way to go?
Great video....I've spent a fortune on inks and papers but in the end I went back to Canon Pro paper....just seems to work best for skin tones (using LR anyway)
Yeah the Canon paper and using the Canon Driver / Paper Profile works great. I've never profiled canon paper to see if it looks much different to the 'in built' driver profile but might do that soon. As for papers I use though I do love the art pairs for some images and the metallic ones...which Canon don't do which is why the profiling works so well.
No I don't think so; there's always going to be issues with software I guess especially as things are updated so often. I use Lightroom a lot but not half as much as some of my friends. What I do use it for though it works well.I don't use it for Tethering...I use TetherTools software which I find more stable and fast. Would always be happy for an overall speed boost though.
Useful though I have a pro100S. I struggled at first to get good prints and then found that "pro" mode worked very well - no idea how it worked though. Subsequently I discovered that the "off the shelf" ICC profiles from paper manufacturers are pretty useless and the only way forward is to either do your own (if you have the hardware) or do a test print and send off for a customised profile from the paper supplier. I did this and have never looked back. Btw I always use print studio pro, that's my other tip if using Canon printers.
Super helpful video which made me think differently...and that a test was in order since I've chased color differences between monitor and printer for a while now. It actually prevented me from printing more because I would get frustrated by differences I saw between monitor and printer output. My color profiling workflow matched yours precisely using the iStudio for both monitor and paper profiling - and that REALLY held my attention! I'm using a PRO-1000 and just did a test with the evaluation image...it matched my monitor almost perfectly. I then printed a recent image I was not happy with - that I had printed using the LR print module - and used the PP&L plug-in for LR (which automatically opens the image for you in PP&L). There was a noticeable change that definitely matched my monitor better. I then did another more challenging test with a very colorful image I was not happy with out of LR Print using a paper profile I created. I printed the first one again through LR and it was equally bad, then printed the same one with PP&L using the same paper and profile...the difference was shocking and matched my monitor perfectly. I'll have to do more tests, but I feel much more encouraged! Thank you...and yes...I've now subscribed!
Hi Glyn, I have purchased the Canon PRO 300 printer after viewing your excellent tutorial . I noticed that you printed the strawberry test photo with perceptual as the rendering intent while the biker photo used relative intent with black point compensation. Why one over the other? Thanks again for the superb demonstration.
Hi Michael...that's great to hear. Hoe you're happy with it. As for the strawberry test as all of the colours were within 'gamut' and I was using the Printer Driver the rendering intent was left at Photoshop's default of Relative. Black Print Compensation is disabled. For the biker, it was a case of checking to see which rendering intent gives the best result as there was a slight change between the two. Black Point Compensation was able to be used which is best too as this gives more range of blacks as opposed to 'crushing' them from a certain point. My printing course that I'm recording will cover this too...hope that helps.
@@glyndewis many thanks! I managed to find out that you’re right, the printer I have used an older software compared to the newer printers. Wasn’t to sure if I was missing something, but, thank you ever so much for your help as well as awesome videos 🙏
Xrite i1Display Pro, Canon Pro 100, Canon Inks, Canon papers, LR6= NO PROBLEMS. All the above trying CansonInffinity & Red River sample pack papers. I have the Xrite i1 Studio also but haven't made a custom ICC profile as of yet. Sample packs only have 1 or 2 sheets each. If I order full packs of third party paper , I will make the profile. Like you I like using LR. Only used the Canon driver on it's own twice. First time, like you to print the test sheet with the strawberries &, once with the RR paper. Nice photos & happy holidays!
Thanks Glyn for a great video. I dont use lightroom but need to get another Canon printer as my last one has stopped working after nearly 10 years. As a keen photographer the quality of prints is important as I'm sure you'll agree. I have been trying to decide between the Canon ts6350a and the ts8350a. There is not much difference price wise. The ts8350a uses 6 cartridges but has several other things you can do but I wouldnt use. Any views on these printers Thanks Glyn.
Hi Leonard. Thanks so much for watching the video and for the kind words. To be honest I'm not familiar with the printer models you mention so I'll go and take a look. I guess all I can say really in this case is what I would do if those were my choices and that would be (as you suggest) not go for the one that has lots of bells and whistles that I wouldn't use. However if the print quality was better, and because the price difference isn't much between then, then I would go for it.
Good tutorial, however its very hard to follow when Canon change the print settings, No longer is there a Colour Matching option along with a box to tick for Canon Colour Matching. So what option to i choose now??
Are you Mac or Windows? If you're Mac then it's greyed out because you're using an ICC profile and it turns off colour management automatically...which is good
Hi Glyn, I just watched this video and enjoyed it very much. I just bought a pro_300 printer and have been having trouble getting the correct colors on my prints. The most notable is browns printing very red or magenta. My monitor is calibrated. I exported the image from lightroom and printed from the Professional Print & Layout application and what do you know, it's perfect. I really enjoy printing from lightroom though and I don't have a clue as to how to get the same results as PP&L. Any thoughts. Rob (new subscriber)
Hi Glyn , I have a Canon pro 100s and wonder if it would be compatable with Canon professional print and layout? I have a funny feeling the answer will be no. Thanks in advance Ray
When a client wants an 11x14 image size, what image sizing settings should I use when exporting photos from LR to a folder on my PC desktop? These photos will go to a professional print company like Artsy Couture?
Hi Judith...If the image is to be printed at 11 x 16 , just crop and export at 11 x 16. Colour Space is one to check with your Lab as some prefer sRGB ... (the pro lab I use does). I also set sharpening to Medium / Normal. Some may say to change this depending on the paper your having it printed on but I've tried different export settings and see little to no difference...they still come out looking great.
@@glyndewis Thank you so much. I’m so happy I found your channel. Should I just set all photos to print at 11x14 as a default in LR.? That way it’s always an option.
Hi Glyn, thank you for all the useful informations in your video. Is there a way to put stroke border to your Prints when printing with the canon software? Thank you in advance.😀
Hi George...glad you like the video. As for a stroke border in the Canon Software, I don't believe so; I've taken a good look around and see no options for that I'm afraid. Regards, Glyn
Thank you, Glyn. Although I have printed for many years, I had to bin my Epson P600 due to usual blocked ink jets Epson are renown for and replaced it with the Canon Pro-300 like yours. I had not appreciated the usefulness of the Professional Print & Layout plug-in until you talked about it. I shall be using it from now on - thanks again. P.S. FB Pearl is a fantastic paper, luckily I had a A3 box on the shelf.
Really happy this has helped Ken...thanks so much for messaging. The Professional Print and Layout utility is superb. I use it as a standalone...some people have had issues with it when using as a plug in...just so you know. I'm also trying out Qimage so will let you know how that is too, as it's highly recommended and used across the printing world. Thanks again
Begs the question, as to what on earth Lightroom is doing to flatten the prints like that? I've just bought into the Canon Printers and yet to do print no.1 so I am pretty pleased that you have managed to get great results using the Canon Print software, so thanks for the video, very encouraging.
It'll just be something small that needs updating between the software and the printer, much like when new cameras come out I guess. I'm sure it won't be long before it's sorted but for now, that extra step of exporting and using the canon software is fine, especially as it works so incredibly well. Thanks for watching and...enjoy the new printer :)
Thanks.
Thank you Jimmy. Re the Pro 300, its the upgrade from the now, no longer made, Pro 10-S and I wanted to keep with an A3+ printer. I have loved at the 1000 as I want a larger format too, but it's been around for a long time now so would think that an update is on the horizon.
@@glyndewis should you recommend the pro 300 or go for the 1000? I think the big ink cart at 80ml is more economic in the long run. But the 300 looks nice to.
Hi Glyn, I have my Canon Pro 300 and love it but, I am not able to add my printer to the Professional Printing and layout program. The printer does print from other programs. I am using Monterey OS 12.1 on my iMac. Canon tech support is closed until Monday, but I’m curious if there might be an obvious fix that I am overlooking. Also, I am using a USB connection and not the AirPrint driver. Any comments are appreciated.
Hi Michael. To be honest, if I was you I'd uninstall the Canon Print Software and the re-install it from a new download from Canon. I did do that myself a couple of weeks back when finally upgrading to Monterey. Hope that helps, but please do keep me posted 👍
Hi Glyn, I am useing Qimage Ultimate for years on my Canon Pro-1000 and Epson ET 7750. In my opinion ths best printing software. In the latest version, you will never have to go in to the printer driver. It's AI function takes care of all poosible mistakes and correct it automatically.
Hi Rene. I also have QImage but QImage One as I’m a mac user and max automatically turns the printer driver off which is great. Obviously the Ultimate version of QImage I Is for Windows and yeah seems great with the AI.
You liked the results from PS with color managed by the printer, but did you test LR Classic with color managed by the printer? I'm thinking of getting a Canon printer but worry about this kind of thing. Epson's been fine all these years.
Hi Glyn, I continue to enjoy printing with the Pro 300 utilizing Canons Professional print and layout. I like both bordered and borderless prints. Some on social media suggest never to print borderless, because of internal overspray damage to the printers interior. What are your thoughts. Thank you.
Hi Michael...Great to hear that you're still enjoying the results you're getting with the printing. As for bordered or borderless, to be honest I always do have a border but that's not because of some alleged damaged that borderless may cause, but is more for handling afterwards and if the image ends up being put into a frame meaning I don't lose any of the image if that makes sense. I have printed borderless however, and don't really subscribe to the idea that doing so causes damage...maybe in older models, but not in newer. That said...that is my thoughts on this; I haven't spoken with anyone directly at Canon.
Is Canon Professional Print & Layout only functional with certain printers? I just bought an iP8720 and was hoping to utilize everything in this video, but it doesn't seem like the software can/will recognize the printer. Who knew printing could be such a pain?!
Thanks for producing such a helpful vid and I enjoyed the content. However, I have also noted that it is possible to do "pattern printing" with this Canon printer that I have only had a few days and wondered if you had used this at all? I appreciate that with this quality of printer it is a huge leap for me as I have not had a decent printer for a couple of years or so but am kicking myself for investing in budget papers now that I have watched your video and some others on this Pro300 printer. I bought some paper on Amazon and stupidly realised now that it does not have ICC profiles so have had to set to a nearest value by guessing.
Hi Nigel...I haven't tried 'pattern printing' but I may well take a look. As for the papers, yeah definitely worth looking at some others but with the ones you have, you can still get places like Permajet or. Fotospeed to do a profile for you for minimum cost. Might be worth considering.
Glyn - Great video! I've just subscribed to your channel. I was printing the other day with my Canon Pro 200 and was having a lot of problems. (Thanks for a couple of tips I picked up). I was trying to print a 12" X 12" image onto A3+ paper (Canon Pro Lustre) - and using a large 273MB .tiff file to print from. I couldn't get it to work at all. It kept coming out as a field of grey with a small psychedelic colour area toward the middle. I managed to print a few smaller images with no issues at all - so the printer was working just fine. Is there a limit to the size of a .tiff that the printer will handle? Any ideas of what the problem might be? Thanks for any help. Oh, and I'm going to work my way through your catalogue of videos in the next few days. Cheers!
Hey Alan, thanks so much for watching and for the sub. As for your question..can I ask, were you using the Canon Professional Print and Layout Software?
Hi Glyn - I have just bought a Canon Pro 200 and was keen to follow your advice. The link to the software from Canon appears to be broken and I can’t find it by going to the Canon UK site - any ideas?😮
Hi Glyn, great video and very interesting. The issue i am still having even after watching your video and doing exactly what you did to set up the initial test evaluation print but you did not comment on what to do if your test print has a colour cast on it, as mine has. I have a Canon Pro 10S and it has been working just fine until a few days ago and ever since then i am getting this colour cast on every print. Can you please help me as i am getting so frustrated and using so much ink but still no closer in finding what the problem is. I have even re-installed the app twice, cleaned the printer three times but still no joy.... 😒 Any help would be very much appreciated. I can send you a copy of the images i am getting if it helps.
Great video. So is there no need to do soft proofing if you use Canons software? Or, do you still do soft proofing and export that file to be printed ?
Cheers Scott. Great question and actually a really interesting point. In just a short time of printing this way (as yet) I've not done (or had to do) any soft proofing whereas I always checked in LR. The prints are coming out spot on using the Canon Software without any intervention. Obviously if they came out too dark that would mean my monitor/ screen wasn't calibrated correctly but as it is, and the colours are great...I couldn't be happier. I'll have a play with the soft proofing in the Canon Software though and will report back.
@@glyndewis After years of frustration, I am now in a happy place with my prints. I have selected my fav photo papers from Permajet, also now with custom profiles. I can't thank you enough Glyn for this informational video. Cheers Neil
Hi Glyn, love your channel and I love your way of delivering content. I am curious though, for the amount of printing you do, why did you not go with the Canon Pro 1000 with the larger ink cartridges?
That'a very kind of you to say ... thanks. Re the printer , I was actually given this one. I was looking at the Pro 1000 (and still am) but waiting for the update as it's been around for while now 👍🏻
Hi Glynn, I am thinking of upgrading to the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-1000 A2......I like it LARGE! I have never had a problem with LRc and the current printer. I had just assumed if I got a new model all I would have to do was send off the papers again for a new colour profile for each paper. (I Love Fotospeed papers) If my monitor was calibrated and I used the custom ICC profile for each paper, I cannot see why the new profile with the new printer would not work with LR. Are you saying it still will not print OK? or are you just suggesting that the canon software is better to print from? (With the older printers, Canon Print Studio is a bitch to configure with LRC and does not really work. It only works with Photoshop) Enjoyed the video keep them coming. Do you have a licence to ride a bike that big?
Robin if you're going for the Pro 1000 then you're fine with Lightroom...100% as it's been around a while longer than the Pro 300. You'll get superb results with that. Have thought about that one myself because as you say...go LARGE :) Fotospeed make great papers ... I've got some of theirs so yeah the combination will be superb! As for a licence...even if I did there's no way I'd look as cool as Steve in the pictures :)
@@glyndewis Glynn, thats good to hear. I have been sourcing the A2 prints from Loxley and the fuji fine art photo rag 300gsm I get it printed on by them is just stunning. I have sold quite a few of those because they look so good. I only hope the Canon can get near to the same quality, but I would love that control from home and it might make economic sense do buy the printer (£500 ink sets?😭). I think anyone would look cool on a bike like that .. unfortunately I end up in hospital being rebuilt when ever I touch them😳
Great video! I found Canon PP&L during the pandemic when getting frustrated by color reproduction on a new PRO-1000. I had a question regarding the “soft proofing” preview option. Is that intended to mimic the impact of the specific paper finish on color perception? Is there a recommended approach to pushing the image to compensate for that impact, or do you just accept the impact and adjust the paper choice? I notice you chose “Relative Colorimetric” for rendering intent. I see a lot of recommendations that “Perceptual”, although not as accurate, can provide more pleasing results. Is the choice for this more down to preference; would you always use relative colorimetric for color matching accuracy? Cheers!
Hi Nigel...Soft Proofing is supposed to give you an idea of what your image will look like when printed on that certain paper and in software like Lightroom you can create a Proof Copy that you then edit to bring it more in line with the original...if needed. Paper choice is a big factor when it comes to printing and can unknowingly cause a lot of frustration. What I mean there is that folks will calibrate their screens perfectly, use a profile but then the image will come out maybe warmer than they expect but this is because of the paper properties and that it's designed to give images that look. As for Relative or Perceptual Rendering Intent, it depends on the image. I never take it to use one over the other but will always flip between them to see how they affect the image prior to printing. It's this stuff that I'm covering in the printing course once it's released but hope this helps here.👍
Great video but I was left confused. Perhaps I missed something. So, you printed the evaluation print with photoshop, and you said the color was great, so why go get canon software and not just use photoshop?
Hi. Thanks a lot for great informational videos! Just watched another video of yours, you have mentioned that you print in ProPhoto RGB color space. Here you export TIFF in AdobeRGB. I think I am missing something. Can you help? Best regards.
Glyn, I can tell you something else about printing from Lightroom, which has made me bypass it and print directly through Canon Professional Print and Layout. If you print with PP&L via Lightroom, whatever quality setting you set, e.g. 300ppi, Lightroom will counter it by defaulting it to 240ppi. You will see this by positioning the mouse over the image in PP&L. The file info comes up with 240ppi, despite what was set in the Lightroom Print module. Christ knows why! (Or possibly, Adobe does!) Printing directly through the standalone PP&L, prints at exactly the quality setting you set.
Hi Glyn and thank you for fantastic presentation. Even that canon have its own image software that allows the colors on the screen to be the same when the image is printed, do I need to calibrate my monitor? Or downloaded ICC profile is good enough? Thanks !!!
Yeah definitely calibrate the monitor / screen. ICC profiles will tell the computer and printer how to interpret the colour so the ink hitting the paper matches the colours they should be. Calibrating does colour, brightness, contrast. So many times people will get prints where the colours are great but the print is too dark...that's because the calibration hasn't been done correctly ie the screen display is too dark. Paper profiles don't know how bright / dark your screen is.
@@glyndewis What about the print proof and colour profiles in Lr and Ps because I feel a bit confused after your great video, are they actually useless and just marketing? Thanks again Glyn.
Hi Mike...Yeah should do no problem mate. I've used it with my Pro 10-S in the past but stayed with Lightroom with that one as it works great together.
@@ColdCoffeePhotography Thanks, Frankly I get beautiful printed photos on my Canon Pro-10 with both Lightroom and Photoshop just using the "printer manages color" setting in the print dialog. I tried the "Photoshop or Lightroom manages color"setting and do not get as good or results. I also leave the "Color/Intensity" set to "auto" in the printer properties dialog window.
Hi Glyn, great video. Any reason why you're using the TIFF file rather than an JPG file? Your export settings are color space Adobe RGB and Tiff and 16 bit. Is it better to use a TIFF and this color space rather than JPG sRGB and 8bit?
Great question Martin. In short it's because Adobe RGB contains a larger colour that the printer can reproduce and 16bit TIFF contains way more information so much smoother gradients in the colours etc..
Good vid! I have the Pro100s which can't use this software, I note that Canon want £160 for a full set of inks for the 300!!!!! do you refill or not, if not how many prints are you roughly getting from each cart as it (sadly) seems to me printing at home is becoming too expensive for the average hobbyist :(
Yeah I saw that the Pro100s can't use the software...shame that. As for the inks, I only use genuine branded inks and yeh it can be a bit costly. I've not had it long enough to say how long or how many prints I'm getting from each and it's also difficult to do that as each image would use more or less of each of the inks each time depending on what the picture is of. I do wish the (maybe it is) the Pro 300 could be bottle fed...I may look into that.
So what about printing from Lightroom Classic? Or do you always export from Lightroom and the print using Canon’s software? Ty btw your webinar today, “How to photograph everyday people was great!
Using the new Canon Pro 300, printing from Lightroom Classic isn't giving me the best results any all (at the moment); the side by side pictures of the biker in the video where the colours were wrong...the left side was printed using LR Classic. This is why at the moment I'm exporting from LR and then printing using the Canon Software. Hope that makes sense. Thanks for tuning into the webinar too. Glad you enjoyed it. Glad too that my screen wasn't showing for too long midway through :)
@@glyndewis Thanks for the shout back...ah software, fix one thing, improve another thing and break a few along the way...Don't sweat the minor techno glitch on the webinar, it's 'live' and murphy is alive and well...all is great! ty and Merry Christmas...by the way, have you ever done a video or dialog on how you got started in photography? ty
Hi Glyn, firstly - I really liked your B&W tutorial during the last PS Virtual Summit! Now, I'm on the fence regarding the purchase of a printer and this video is a very good argument for getting one. I'd just like a bit of clarification - do you soft proof your images in LR or PS before sending them to the Canon app for printing? Thanks!
Hello Glyn. What paper are you using to get that awesome texture on your prints? Seen a couple of your videos with that texture. Thank you for all your printing videos. It has actually given me the courage to seriously start looking at printing after a couple of years on hold 🙏🏼😂
Hi Giovani. I use Permajet Papers and the ones where you're seeing texture will be the FB Pearl (fibre based). So many papers to choose from in their range and each gives a different look but this one I really like. Oyster is also a great one. Hope this helps 👍
Great video! I have been printing on my Canon 100s for a few years now and I use Canon ink and Canon paper as I am not sure if the prints will last if I use 3rd party paper paper or ink. Any thoughts on this?
YOu'll find fully archival papers from 3rd party providers David so definitely worth trying out. I only ever use genuine branded inks though so wouldn't want to say either way out that.
No not at all...I've been printing from Lightroom for a good while and it works great...with my other Canon printer. This new one though, there's definitely something not quite the same. Lightroom should be good for you..but I would also look at comparing it with the results from the Epson software and something like Qimage.
Glyn, My main concern is the ink charges for a Canon Printer like yours. Do the epson eco tank printers give good photo quality & are they easy to use? Appreciate your advice. Ps got your 3 of your books, Brilliant
Hi Steve...Yeah ink certainly isn't cheap and not helped by the fact that most (if not all) of the problems have pre programmed cycles in them to clean and this uses quite a bit of ink each time too. As for the Epson ones I don't have experience using them for photos however I am going to reach out to them as I'm recording a full printing course and it would be good to have both Canon and Epson printers in it. I'll keep you posted.
Hi Glyn! Greetings from Norway! Thanks a lot for this video, just bought a 200, so this was great help! I experienced that my image got very heavy green (comparing to screen) when printing from LrC, so decided to try this instead. But then my print was not that sharp, I exported as you did (only thing that differed was that I did not change "resize to fit width and height 1000 px"). Resolution 300 pixels per inch. Any idea why? Really happy for any help or input :)
Hi Nina...I now do this from Lightroom straight into the Canon software using the plug in found in File > Plug In Extras (in Lightroom) ... try that and let me know 😉
@@glyndewis Good, tried, but image did not appear in the preview window in the Canon software (just a blank square). So another mystery then, but maybe not to you :)
My new Pro-300 does not match the printer setup. And Canon says it does not support Pro-300. Do I need to install other printer drivers for win11 on LCR and photoshop.?
Mac for best results I’d stick with using the Canon Pro Print Layout software which does support the Pro 300 ; it’s what I use all the time and did on Friday when presenting a Printing Seminar with a new Pro 300. As for the printer drivers, yes absolutely.
@@glyndewis thanks. What about your site that asks to login but there is no option other than the newsletter that doesn’t have a place to add a pew. Am I missing a link?
Just purchased a Pro-200 and was intially very disappointed with the first couple of prints. This has sorted the problems out, many thanks.
That's fantastic to hear Karl ... thank you for commenting
Cheers
ps> Are you Mac or Windows based?
@@glyndewis Windows. I can’t see why you are having this issue then. I could show you multiple comparing examples, it just doesn’t add up.
Thanks.

Fantastic to read this ... enjoy the 300 ... such a good printer!
Awesome video. Thank you Glyn!

That's fantastic to hear Gareth...thanks so much 👍
A couple of times a year I will run into the same issue with prints suddenly coming out with desaturated colors.
You're welcome Scott; thanks for tuning in
Hi Glen, I am printing on my Pro 300 with Canon photo paper plus glossy II.

Thank you Glyn. I just set up my pro 200 and I'm glad I watched you before I got started with printing a bunch of disappointing images.

Thanks so much for the recommendation here...that sounds great. I've taken a look at the software website and will grab it to give it a run.

Thx so much for the video. I repeated all your steps and get the same results. So far so good. But what I find irritating that the greens in the color boxes (below the stone balls) are totally different when printed (a lot darker).
So do you reckon LR is a bit crook?
@@johnmcnairn6822 seems you’re best off using the paper the printer manufacturer recommends. .
Cheers Dave
Fantastic to hear Mark...thanks so much for commenting
@@glyndewis Thank you! I look forward to your next recording.👍
Hi Glyn, brilliant video as always. I have a Canon Pixma ix6850, does the software just work on this or is it just the pro models?
Thanks Tony. Re the Pro Print Layout Software, it is for the newer ,Pro models I believe.
Sounds good to me; cheers
Thank you 😃👍👍
You're welcome Arvid; thank you for watching 👍
Hi Glyn,
I know you just finished with PS summit and as usually it's a great content.
BUT when can we expect the full printing course?:))))))
Promise you...VERY soon...it's done...apart from one small thing to add in, so just a matter of a few weeks...honest 😉
Good tutorial, however its very hard to follow when Canon change the print settings, No longer is there a Colour Matching option along with a box to tick for Canon Colour Matching. So what option to i choose now??
Are you Mac or Windows? If you're Mac then it's greyed out because you're using an ICC profile and it turns off colour management automatically...which is good
I’m using windows 10 PC
Hi Glyn, I just watched this video and enjoyed it very much. I just bought a pro_300 printer and have been having trouble getting the correct colors on my prints. The most notable is browns printing very red or magenta. My monitor is calibrated. I exported the image from lightroom and printed from the Professional Print & Layout application and what do you know, it's perfect.
I really enjoy printing from lightroom though and I don't have a clue as to how to get the same results as PP&L. Any thoughts.

Hi Glyn , I have a Canon pro 100s and wonder if it would be compatable with Canon professional print and layout? I have a funny feeling the answer will be no. Thanks in advance Ray
It isn't but try Canon Print Studio Pro instead 😉
@@glyndewis Thank you Glyn, keep up your good work.
Is there a equivalent for a Epsom test sheet? Or can I use this?
You can use the same mate
@@glyndewis Thanks for the reply. Great channel, glad i found it.
Thanks.
Brian … Mac does indeed turn off colour management if you are using an icc profile which is exactly what you want
@@glyndewis perfect, thanks Glyn!

What made you choose the Canon pro 300?
Did you thought about the Canon pro 1000?
I cant decide between them.
Hi Glyn,
I have my Canon Pro 300 and love it but, I am not able to add my printer to the Professional Printing and layout program.
@@glyndewis Thanks Glyn, reinstalling worked and now on to printing! Thank you very much..
Hi Glyn,
I am useing Qimage Ultimate for years on my Canon Pro-1000 and Epson ET 7750.
Obviously the Ultimate version of QImage I
Is for Windows and yeah seems great with the AI.
At Last !!! Pronlem solved, thank you so much for this.
You liked the results from PS with color managed by the printer, but did you test LR Classic with color managed by the printer? I'm thinking of getting a Canon printer but worry about this kind of thing. Epson's been fine all these years.
Tom I did use LR Classic with the Colour Management by the printer...that's what I showed between the two biker images.
Great video. Love the opening. 🤣
Thanks a lot Michael 👍
Is Canon Professional Print & Layout only functional with certain printers? I just bought an iP8720 and was hoping to utilize everything in this video, but it doesn't seem like the software can/will recognize the printer. Who knew printing could be such a pain?!
Brian...yeah there's a link in the description showing which of the Canon printers it works with. It's mainly the new PRO models (200, 300 etc)
Great video Glyn. I photograph mainly in black and white. Any suggestions for a good paper for B&W? I’m using a Canon Pro 200. Thanks !
Funny you shopuld ask ... I've just done a B&W print on Permajet Smooth Rag 30 (Heritage Range) and it's stunning! Probably my new fave paper 👍🏻
@@glyndewis Yes, I was using CPPL software (Version 1.2.2).
@@glyndewis Thanks for the response Glyn! I have learned so much from you over the years. Keep up the great work.

It's this stuff that I'm covering in the printing course once it's released but hope this helps here.👍
@@glyndewis Thanks for the response - looking forward to your upcoming printing course! Cheers, Nigel

Hi There. I've added a link in the description to show which printers are compatible. I'm also trying Qimage for printing which looks great so far.
is it possible to do the same thing for photoshop?
Great video but I was left confused. Perhaps I missed something. So, you printed the evaluation print with photoshop, and you said the color was great, so why go get canon software and not just use photoshop?
Does this also work with Pro 100s printer
No the software doesn't work with the previous models; however...it's definitely worth trying Qimage for printing if you've not looked at that
I know this is an older video, but Im not finding any canon print software with the link provided. Is there an updated workaround?
Sure thing … check out my latest LIVE 👍🏻
Hi. Thanks a lot for great informational videos! Just watched another video of yours, you have mentioned that you print in ProPhoto RGB color space. Here you export TIFF in AdobeRGB. I think I am missing something. Can you help? Best regards.
Hello, does it matter if i use Argb or srgb color space in my camera, if i shoot raw ? especially for prints?
No, shooting RAW doesn't assign a color space so that setting in your camera isn't applied; that's only for when shooting Jpeg
Thank you
You’re welcome; thanks for watching
Very interesting Terry, thanks...I'll take a look at that too but yeah...I much prefer using PP&L as a standalone
@@glyndewis Thak you very much Giyn!
@@glyndewis What about the print proof and colour profiles in Lr and Ps because I feel a bit confused after your great video, are they actually useless and just marketing? Thanks again Glyn.

Sir video is good we need cannon pro 521 12 colors machine , colors are having variations ,pls give some good suggestions to us
Are you using OEM inks?

YOu'll find fully archival papers from 3rd party providers David so definitely worth trying out. I only ever use genuine branded inks though so wouldn't want to say either way out that.
Oh, the intro was brilliant! Style pinpointed to perfection!
But then... If you have only a basic Pixma you're out of luck printing photos((

Oh and thanks so much re the books...that's great to hear :)
