  • This class will cover the basic operation of Canon imagePROGRAF PRO and newer model Pixma Pro series of printers. Both have a powerful and FREE program available called Professional Print Layout designed to make your printing experience more streamlined and simple. PPL is available to use as a standalone application allowing you to drag and drop files directly into the program without going through Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom. It can also be accessed from within those programs and used as a plug-in. The basis for the program is to allow users to print multiple images on a single page with relative ease, eliminating the need for expensive RIPs designed for this purpose. It is also an excellent printing program for printing individual images on at a time.
    Canon PPL is compatible with the following Canon imagePROGRAF Pro Series & Newer model Pixma Pro printers: Pixma Pro-200/300, Pro-1000/2000/4000/6000/2100/4100/6100.
    Learn everything from the basics of how to use this program as well as the deep dive into little known features. This workshop is a must for anyone who owns a later model Canon printer. Any and all questions regarding printing on Canon printers are welcome.
    Class size is unlimited.

    At about 26:00 minutes in, those are IPv6 addresses, not MAC addresses. IPv4 addresses are the numerical 0-255 sections like 192.168.1.8. IPv6 addresses are the longer hexadecimal values with the multiple colons between sections in your “find printer” view.

    Great course, and I watched it as an update. I did find a cure for the ever changing IP address issue. I use a Pro-1000 and every time I turned in the printer, I would have to load a new printer into PP&L as the IP address changed. The solution I found was to go into the admin screen of the router and make the currently printer IP address a permanently assigned address. That way when the router sees the printer, it assigns the same address and PP&L sees the printer.

    • @ericjoseph3865
      @ericjoseph3865 Год назад

      Excellent. I'm glad you found the cure for this. It is one of the great mysteries of networking. That IP address does have to stay the same or PPL will drop the printer.

    Hi! Great video! Thank you so much for it! I have one question - is it possible using Professional Print & Layout to select Layout Mode to "Multiple images", place some images, and somehow tell the printer to cut after every image like it would be for a single image?

    • @ericjoseph3865

      While you can use Canon PPL to print out multiple images on a page, it is limited to the page size you’ve selected or created. There is an optional cutter that you can use to do custom cutting of images and stickers though which is a much more advanced product and used primarily with the large format printers and a RIP called Imageprint.

    On my Pro-4100, I'm putting 3 11"wide x14"high images on a 36" roll. I want to make each image smaller to allow for a margin of 1.25" all around and fit in the 11"x14" slot. I am not seeing how to create a margin. I must be missing a setting somewhere. Thanks

    • @ericjoseph3865
      @ericjoseph3865 3 месяца назад

      Hello Richard. That is a very good question. Canon PPL can not include borders in the slots. You can either "fill" the slot with the image or "fit" the image to the slot using the Slot Size drop down menu when performing a left click on the slot area. The only way to create a border is to use the Show Crop Marks tool in the Layout panel and set them to 1.25 inches away from each corner of the slot. You can set this parameter but clicking on the "Settings" button to the right of the Show Crop Marks tool. You can set the Crop Mark Positioning there as well as activate Inside Corner Crop Marks, which I would highly recommend for ease when trimming down your images. I hope this helps.

    Eric, this is a great video. I have a question, when making my prints should I converted to 8 Bits? I understand that the Canon Pro-300 and other inkjet rinter only supports 8 bits and are more consistents like that. Any thoughts? there is no comments in this subject. Also, when you talk about color space, I understand you rpoint of Adobe RGB, but if you use Lightroom as your focal point to manage your photos and Edit in Photoshop, and store it in LR. Going back and forth changing the Color Space is not recommended, as far as I know. The problem is LR defauult Color Space is always Prophoto. Thanks again.

    • @ericjoseph3865
      @ericjoseph3865 5 месяцев назад

      When printing you want the most information you can get in your file. ProPhoto RGB is generally too big but many people use it. I feel, and many others feel that Adobe RGB (1998) is a more appropriate color space for digital fine art printing since our inks in our printers we designed around this color space. 16 bit files are always better than 8 bit files as they contain more information. The Lightroom default color space is ProPhoto RGB but all of this is selectable and adjustable in LR. You might want to view my other video “The Six Steps to Making Perfect Inkjet Prints on the LACP RUclips Channel. I touch on color space and the differences between sRGB, Adobe RGB (1998) and Pro Photo RGB.

    How can I install a MOAB icc profile on to the Canon Pro 300. I have the ICC profile saved to my Mac computer. However, when I try to upload the ICC profile using the Canon Media Configuration Tool, the ICC profiles are greyed out.

    • @ericjoseph3865
      @ericjoseph3865 4 месяца назад

      Hello michaelricco. You don't install ICC profiles on your Canon Pro-300. If you are only installing the ICC profile from Moab's website, you simply copy the ICC profile file in to the folder at this location on your hard drive if you are on an Apple computer, Macintosh HD - Library - ColorSync - Profiles. If you are on Windows simply click on the file and choose Install Profile and Windows will install it in the correct location. When you launch Canon Professional Print & Layout the profile will be listed in the Printer Profile dropdown menu. Make sure you choose the correct and appropriate Media Type Setting for the profile you are using. The Canon Media Configuration Tool does not install profiles. It is designed to install AM1X files which are combination Media Type files with attached profiles. By installing these types of files the profile will automatically get installed in the correct location. It is a bit confusing the Media Type files and ICC profiles are two different things. The Media Configuration Tool is also designed to allow you to create custom Media Type files as well. Maob currently doesn't provide AM1X files for the Canon Pro-300 so I wouldn't worry about this now. You might want to watch the video on this LACP RUclips channel called Introduction to Media Configuration Tool that is a recorded class I taught a bit ago on how to use that program. You can also email me directly at etjoseph@freestylephoto.com if you need further assistance. I hope this helps.

    Fantastic content which I've been able to put to use immediately. One question related to the "Prevent Paper Abrasion" setting. I'm using a PRO-1000, but cannot for the life of me see anywhere in PP&L how you get to that setting. One thought I had was that this setting ends up being automatically selected when certain Media Types are selected. In my case, it was set to Heavyweight Fine Art Paper as that was recommended for the paper I was using, but I saw no way to confirm that was happening.
    One other item, during the review of the Add Printer dialog with the various printer choices, the comment was made regarding the IP addresses. Some were shown with the IPv4 IP addresses we are all used to seeing. For the other printer entries, the comment was that those were MAC addresses and that it best not to choose them. That is not accurate. The other addresses shown are NOT MAC addresses, rather they are IPv6 addresses. If a router and the device connecting to the network supports IPv6 when connected, the router will provide that device with both an IPv4 and IPv6 network address. You could choose either, but for simplicity, selecting the IPv4 address is best. If someone wants to avoid the possibility that their router assigns a different IP address to their device in the future, the easiest way to accomplish that is to create an IP reservation for that device (which WILL use the device's MAC address and can be seen when looking at the connected devices or routing table). Most routers make that pretty easy to do, but you would need to check that process for your router.
    Thank you!

    • @ericjoseph3865
      @ericjoseph3865 Год назад

      Hello @marklineberger4350. The Prevent Paper Abrasion setting is on the LCD screen of your printer. Go to Various Settings - Device Settings - Print Settings. This setting is not in the Canon PPL program. On the MAC address issue you are correct. I was always told that these were MAC addresses but under further investigation have confirmed that they are in fact IPv6 addresses which most people do not use. I stand corrected. I have found that both work, but yes, we usually use the IPv4 address. Thank you for the clarification.

      Sometimes Canon PPL drops your printer. It is a glitch or bug that pops up from time to time. I find it happens more with people who are printing via Wi-Fi as your Wi-Fi router can dynamically assign IP addresses and change them without you knowing it. The solution is to just reinstall Canon PPL and the plug in as described in the video. It shouldn't be happening all the time. If it does, check your network router.

      Hello Bryan. Sorry, I don't think Canon ever intended for this program to be used with the Pixma Pro-10. I don;'t think it is a matter of restricting the use. They would have to write the code to do it and that printer has been discontinued for quite some time now. Manufacturers of digital products like to move forward and not look back. Yes, Print Studio Pro won't work with MacOS Ventura anymore either. Such is our frustrating digital world. I tell people all the time to be aware of what products you have that may no longer work if you update your computer and to always consider not updating if you don't have to. You may have to keep an old computer in operation to continue using your Pixma Pro-10. The modern replacement for your Pixma Pro-10 is the imagePROGRAF Pro-300. At some point when your Pixma Pro-10 is no longer functioning, this would be an option for you. I always encourage folks to keep a working printer working though.

It is one of the reasons I don't generally recommend printing from Lightroom. It doesn't really handle the issues of resolution and color space very specifically. You can of course print at this resolution but it isn't what I would consider "best practices." For fine art printing on inkjet printers I recommend exporting the file from Lightroom as a 300 PPI file at the specific size you intend to print at with the color space set to Adobe RGB (1998). If your file was RAW to begin with set the bit depth to 16 bit and save the file as a TIF format. Then open the file in Photoshop and use Canon PPL as a plug-in to print or drag and drop the file in to Canon PPL using it as a standalone application for printing. This is my standard workflow and formatting for fine art digital printing. I hope this helps.

      Lightroom will output at 300dpi... simply click on the 240 and change the dpi number. You can change the figure in the preferences too.

      You can change it in the export preset settings within Lightroom. I have mine unchecked, so that the full file resolution is sent from Lightroom to PPL.

    Where do you install the icc profiles?

    • @ericjoseph3865
      @ericjoseph3865 10 месяцев назад

      If you are on an Apple computer profiles should be copied to your profiles folder located at Macintosh HD - Library - ColorSync - Profiles. They have to be copied in to the Profiles folder. On Windows profiles can be installed by initiating a right click on the ICC file and then choose install. Or you can copy the file in to the folder located at C Drive - Windows - System32 - Spool - Drivers - Color Folder

      Looks like Canon recently updated their website and there was a temporary glitch in the software listing. Should be solved now. If not let me know what computer your are using and what operating system and I can report it to Canon.

      Hello Judy. You might try and playing with your audio and video controls in the actual RUclips program or in your web browser. These programs have a tendency to automatically adjust both audio and video based on your specific internet bandwidth and computer configuration and are a contributing factor in playback quality.
