  • LINCOLN | A walking tour to Lincoln Cathedral and the Medieval Bishops Palace | We take our cameras to the stunning historic city of Lincoln for a walk through the streets of the city centre and down to the incredible Lincoln Cathedral.
Also watch our full walk through LIncoln City Centre here 👉 • LINCOLN UK | Full Linc...
This Lincoln walking tour begins on Newport Court at the Newport Arch, a 3rd century Roman Gate in the heart of the city centre.
We pass through Newport Arch and onto Bailgate which is one of this most historic streets in the Lincoln Cathedral quarter, and is one of Lincoln's most popular tourist attraction.
As we travel down Bailgate we notice the cobbled streets, the quirky little shops and pubs and the sites of Roman ruins.
The Duke William Hotel is up next, which is a really old Inn and Hotel with modern rooms and a cosy bar.
Further down Bailgate is the County Assembly Rooms one of the most prestigious events spaces in Lincoln.
We pass Westgate and come to the Prince of Wales inn and then onto the Lion and Snake pub which is a 15th Century Inn which is said to be haunted by ghosts of Roman Soldiers!
Our Lincoln walking tour continues along until we reach the White Hart Hotel which was the location and site of the invention of the fighting tank!
A heritage plaque has been placed near the entrance to the White Hart Hotel, in Bailgate, where William Foster & Co Ltd boss William Tritton and engineer Walter Wilson sketched out their plans in late summer 1915.
Our walk takes us next down Eastgate which comes out to Minster Yard and the new Lincoln Cathedral visitor centre and garden.
We then head into the grounds of LIncoln Cathedral and take a look at the Tennyson statue which commemorates this famous poet and writer.
Then we head across the grounds of Lincoln Cathedral and come to Priory Gate and walk through the roman Priory Arch before coming back round to Minster Yard for a look at the Cathedral and then down Greenstone Place to the entrance of the Medieval Bishops Palace via the Old Palace Entrance.
After a look around here we head back up to take a look at our final destination and the main focus of this video - Lincoln Cathedral!
Lincoln Cathedral is a medieval cathedral which when completed was actually the tallest building in the world!
Once described by Victorian writer John Ruskin as "out and out the most precious piece of architecture in the British Isles and roughly speaking worth any two other cathedrals we have", Lincoln Cathedral is not to be missed.
With the Norman invasion of Britain in the 11th century, William the Conqueror commissioned Remigius de Fécamp, the first Bishop of Lincoln, to build Lincoln Cathedral. Foundations were laid in 1072 and on May 9th, 1092, it was consecrated, two days after the death of Bishop Remigius.
At the time of its consecration, Lincoln Cathedral was the head of the largest diocese in England - extending from the Humber to the Thames.
After fires and earthquakes had demanded rebuilding of some of the cathedral, it took on a Gothic style of architecture. When the central spire was eventually raised in 1311, it became the tallest building in the world: taking the mantle from the Great Pyramid of Giza. This lasted until 1549 when the spire collapsed in a storm.
Despite its size, the cathedral is filled with intricate detail. In Lincoln Cathedral the architects of the Gothic style perhaps reached the pinnacle of their art; it is an absolute must-see for anyone visiting Lincoln.
There is something for everyone to see at Lincoln Cathedral and children love seeking out the funny carvings - in particular the famous Lincoln Imp!

I'm Lincoln born and bred and so proud of our Cathedral. I used to go to school near to the Cathedral and loved walking past it on my way home. My Mother also sang several times in the Cloisters at the Cathedral as part of concerts that took place there. You ought to try and come at Xmas time and film the market that takes place outside Cathedral and in the Bishops garden....it's magical. Thanks for another brilliant video.

I’ve visited Lincoln from Scotland at least twice a year since 2000 as that’s where my partner’s family is from. In all that time I’ve never really explored around the Cathedral properly, so thank you for that, I’ve enjoyed both of your Lincoln walks very much.
