  • LINCOLN | A look around Lincoln City Centre (including Castle and Cathedral tour)
We take a walk around the city centre and look inside Lincoln Cathedral and Lincoln Castle
Also watch our tour of Sheffield - • SHEFFIELD CITY CENTRE ...
Lincoln is a city in Lincolnshire in the East Midlands part of England. It's famous for it's cathedral, it's castle and it's historic city streets with medieval buildings and fantastic shops.
Gimbal Walk TV takes a look around the city centre to see the things to do in Lincoln and to take a look at the things to see in Lincoln to see what it's like here and what is has to offer tourists and visitors coming to visit the tourist attractions and to do some shopping in the little independent shops here.
Our LIncoln tour begins at Newport Arch on Newport.
Newport Arch is a 3rd-century Roman gate in the city of Lincoln, Lincolnshire. It is a Scheduled monument and Grade I listed building and is reputedly the oldest arch in the United Kingdom still used by traffic.
We then proceed along Bailgate. Early each December the Bailgate area holds a Christmas Market in and around the Castle grounds, shaped by the traditional German-style Christmas markets
Our LIncoln walk then brings us to St Mary Magdalene, Bailgate, a Grade II listed parish church in Lincoln, England. It is dedicated to Jesus' companion, Mary Magdalene.
From there we head through Exchequer Gate, three splendid arched walkways located at the cathedral end of Castle Hill. The gate was constructed during the 14th century and it is here that local tenants came to pay rent to the church.
Then we reach Minster Yard and the star of the show, Lincoln Cathedral. It's a medieval cathedral, once the tallest building in the world, with tours and a Wren-designed library.
Lincoln Cathedral, Lincoln Minster, or the Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Lincoln and sometimes St Mary's Cathedral, in Lincoln, England, is a Grade I listed cathedral and is the seat of the Anglican Bishop of Lincoln. Construction commenced in 1072 and continued in several phases throughout the High Middle Ages. Like many of the medieval cathedrals of England it was built in the Early Gothic style.
The cathedral is the fourth largest in the UK (in floor area) at around 5,000 square metres (54,000 sq ft), after Liverpool, St Paul's and York Minster.
Next up we visit Lincoln Castle, a historic ruined Norman fortress later used as a prison, with exhibits & guided tours. Built by William the Conqueror in 1068 on a site occupied since Roman times, Lincoln Castle has dominated the Lincoln skyline for almost one thousand years. Within the Castle Walls is a Victorian prison giving an insight into crime and punishment in the Lincoln of the past.
We end our LIncoln walking tour at Steep Hill, a steep, cobbled street, lined with independent shops, tea rooms and restaurants that leads to and from Lincoln Cathedral, Lincoln Castle and the Cathedral Quarter.
Steep Hill in Lincoln is England’s Fourth Steepest Street
Steep Hill first became used by the residents of Lincoln when the city was called Lindum Colonia and the Roman inhabitants decided to expand the settlement down the hill. Excavations has shown that the hill used to be lined by steps during that time.
Today, Steep Hill is famous for its independent businesses - vintage boutiques, quaint tea rooms, chocolate & fudge parlours, and more. The steep, cobbled street, with a 16.12º gradient, was voted Britain's Great Street in 2012 by the Academy of Urbanism and named the fourth steepest street in England by the Ordnance Survey.

@@GimbalWalkTV yes, I shared the flat that's on top of lindum hill 1975/6 the rent was 33 quid a month 'tween me and my buddy great Guinness in the pub nearly opposite, of which the name escapes me, annoying that. Distance from the cathedral? not much more than a stone throw really. Don't know if you know Lincoln but the whole of Lincs is flat as a pancake, quite boring really, but the City is well worth a look.
