    100% agree, turned it on on my A1 just to see it work and then turned it off again :) ... Now one difference is that the A1 has a new sonic-cleaning mode at 70khz instead of the little ibis shake. Sadly the a7IV does not. Only time will tell how much that helps. Lastly good to see a reviewer putting body caps on during review :)

    Great video! I'm glad to see the air bulb in use. I've made it a practice to use mine every time I change a lens. I blow off the sensor (camera facing down), then blow off the lens glass after removing the end cap. It seems to have helped. I like the idea of the lighted magnifier. I'll have to look into that.

    While I agree with many statements here I must warn you about 1: if the particle you have on your sensor is sand and you clean it by pressing this soft pen onto it, you essentialy rub dust on glass sensor. Sand is very hard, harder than steel and it can potentially scratch glass.

      You're right, that's why I use a sensor brush. I use air blower every time I change a lens, a sensor brush once a week, and a wet cleaner once a month. Important to switch of camera when changing lenses, as the sensor will be static and attract dust if it's on.

      You do understand that the cover glass is made from very resistant material and that you have to use blower first. It is a very bad idea to have grit and sand in between your shutter blades and on a part which is most prone to fail.

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts! My A7iii had dust on the sensor the first day and more often than not the entire time I had it shooting nature and Wildlife. With my A7iv I'm going to put the shutter down when off function in my my menu. I'll have it turned off since most of the time I turn my camera on and off I'm not changing lenses. Shooting Wildlife I do occasionally go from a big telephoto to a medium telephoto to a macro but not all that often and not every time I turn off the camera. I'll just enable that setting in my menu before a lens change so it only does it then. I've had my R6 for several months and haven't had a single Speck of dust on the sensor. A couple of seconds for the shutter to drop won't bother me and that's messed time than it takes to erase dust particles from images or to clean a sensor. I had to clean the sensor on the A7iii dozens of times.

    [1] Thanks so very very much for preventing me from using the shutter to hide my sensor on my Sony A7 when changing lens. [2] QUESTION: You say the sensor on this Sony camera is hard to damage, with a glass like surface that does not scratch easily. Does this apply to all interchangeable lens cameras? I see so many discussions implying sensors are easy to damage and require great care while cleaning.

    Has anyone tried the "Kase Clip-in MCUV Filter Dedicated for Sony Alpha Camera"? I purchased one for my A7 III and it works to keep the dust away and provides a very durable and replaceable barrier. I suppose the glass layer will degrade the image a bit. But I doubt I would notice compared to dust/sand on the sensor, esp. in a sandy environment at the beach. They don't make one the fits snugly in the A7 IV yet.
    Otherwise, I totally agree. Much safer to clean the sensor than risk debris getting stuck in the leaves of the shutter curtain.

    Thank you so much for bringing this up! Hype can lead many people, specially begginers to faulse usage of the gear they have. Even if my camera had that shutter closing mechanism I would've never used it cause I have seen how delicate the shutter mechanism is in film camera time and I know how easily it can be damaged forever! But sensor cleaning is way more easier than repairing or replacing a shutter. Also much more cheaper! It's disappointing how RUclipsrs hype can even affect the marketing of a big company like Sony and I remember they kindda showed off this feature in the A7iv announcement teaser. And same thing happened to the rear screen which is a shame. Sony had best ever rear screens in A77 and A99. Where are they sony? That mechanism could easily fulfill everybody's needs from RUclipsrs to photographers.

    • @xnmo777
      @xnmo777 2 года назад +2

      Yes, the dust is still in the body, but it's less likely showing up on your picture, which is the point. Blow it out of your camera from time to time is the solution.

    I own the a7sIII since release and never had to clean the sensor. Sony put some new cleaning hardware into it wich works wonders. Every time i turn it off and hold my ear to it i can hear it clicking. Im on your side of this debate. Dust inside the shutter mechanism is way more worse than on the protective glass lol But i wouldnt use anything physically touching the sensor except cleaning swabs. Its glass but it still has a special coating that can rub off.

    I had the A73 for 6 months and it was a magnet for dust spots. I was travelling in Europe for 3 weeks and did not notice the dust spots on the LCD during review and once I got home realized all my photos and videos had some ugly spots when shooting small aperture. So you can't always find the spots and clean it while travelling. The A74 is on pre order and I will continue to use the shutter down function because over the last 1.5 years I have been using Canon R and R6 with the shutter down and I tell you I got 1 dust spot in 13 months on my R6. So it must work unless Canon sensor rejects dusts spots. Not likely. Plus something about cleaning the sensor makes me super nervous so I will use the shutter down function. I don't mind the blower but touching the sensor only if the dust spot is really bad. So lets see how it goes when I start using the A74. As a rule if I have to change lens in the field. Power off , remove battery , wait 10 seconds. Swap lens with body pointing down. lens rear element point down until mounted and always have rear elements down as I cap it up.

    I agree, dust on the shutter could destroy the shutter. I like what Nikon did with the Z9. it has an actual sensor cover that comes down over the sensor, not using the shutter. but it might've been easier for Nikon to to that because the camera has no shutter. but it would be nice if Sony could have a cover come down instead of using the very delicate shutter.

    How can I find out if my camera's sensor has dead pixels and is damaged or it just has dust?

  • @batuhancokmar7330
    @batuhancokmar7330 5 месяцев назад

    Having repaired many metal shutters of my film cameras; I'll say blades themselves are not easily damaged and certainly nothing will happen if you just touch them. Still, the funny thing is, closing shutter curtain can sometimes be more dangerous for your sensor. Lets say if you accidentally grab the camera from the sensor with shutter open. Sensor's glass is a much harder material than your finger or even fingernails, so there is no chance sensor itself will get damaged. It will certainly be a PITA to clean but camera will live on. With this extra "protection" of closing shutter curtain, your finger will push shutter blades, which are mostly made out of high strength steel or titanium, right into the sensor, which isn't a very hard glass to begin with. This CAN scratch the sensor, plus the added risk of bending the linkages and destroying the shutter.

    Curious thing I’ve noticed - my A7iv was presenting with significant battery drain while sitting idle in the “off” position (~30% per night).
    After watching this video, I decided to turn off the “shutter closed while off function”, and I’ve since noticed the battery drain problem has been resolved.
    This is anecdotal…no idea if there is any technical rationale to back this observation up, or if anyone else has noticed something similar. Just something odd that I noticed with mine.
    EDIT: just to add, I’ve done control experiments with this, where this is the only setting changed, and the result is the same. I also placed the camera in airplane mode to make sure there was no “networking” happening in the background. Anyway, perhaps another good reason to follow the advice in this vid.

The tiny bits of dust that get in the camera during lens changes won't do any damage to anything, but they will cause extra time in post because they show up in pictures. And the argument that you might accidentally touch the shutter ... well, if that's your level of dexterity, maybe photography on the whole isn't for you?

    I don't think the shutter door is there to make you handle your gear irresponsibly. I think it's there as extra protection during as shoot. Imagine getting dust and sand on your sensor during a shoot, you attempt to clean it and scratch it up. The door will at least help keep it off during a shoot. Yes it's technically still in your camera but it's better than having it directly on your sensor. I wouldn't take this advice but you're all entitled to your opinions. I'll let the pros create features that work, as I'm sure they've tested it! With the door or not, always remember to change your lens responsibly. I would like to, but I'm nervous it might miss focus on the big moment. 😨😅 I just want that shot to look magical with that beautiful bokeh that lens produces. Would you suggest keeping the drive mode on single shooting, or spray and pray with continous shooting hi? For focus area should I keep it on flexible spot M? I also have register faces priority set to on. As my wife and daughter will be apart of these weddings. Would you suggust turning this setting off when I'm photographing different people, or is it safe to leave it on? Do you like using auto ISO, or do you prefer to control the ISO yourself? Lastly would these settings be ok for group photos, or would I need to change the flexible spot? If so what setting do you recommend? I know I have to turn the eye AF off when I'm doing group photos. Shame it doesn't pick up everyones eyes. What apertures do you like using for groups? Give me some examples for groups of four on up. Maybe when you get a chance you could show us how to pose more than one person when shooting wide open with the 50mm GM. Thanks for your time.

    It is feature where most of the benefit is for Sony service center. From engineering point of view it is a terrible idea to keep dust and sand with the thin teflon perforated blades. The most people are not aware that sensor cleaning does not cost anything compared to the shutter assy swap.

  • @radimpalus
    @radimpalus Год назад

    I have to disagree in certain points. 1) The sensor has static electric charge on its surface and it attracts dust like a magnet and the dust gets stuck on the sensor. This can't be said about the shutter, which doesn't attract dust and if dust falls on it, it will slide down and it is very easy to remove it, which is not the case on the sensor. Some dust can be easily removed from the sensor and some not. A lot of cleaning methods leave streaks on the sensor and some can even damage it. As far as I know, there is no glass on the sensor, so if You do any damage while cleaning, Your sensor is done. If You accidentaly damage the shutter, it can be replaced and it will not ruin Your bank account. On the other hand, the sensor is the most expensive part of the camera and replacing it may not be even worth doing it as it may cost as a new camera. Regarding the position of the camera while changing lenses - if Your camera is facing down, it means, Your rear lens element will be facing up and (think what ...) catching dust. Than You attach the lens to the camera and (whoo whoo)... the dust is inside the camera. So I prefer using the shutter as a protection and will be happily using it in the future. And my shutter on the A7 IV closes quickly - always befere I remove the lens and don't need to wait for it. Maybe You got a bad sample or it was a quirk in the original firmware ...

    The shutter protection is only useful for careless people. I had the A7-III for 2 years and never had to really clean the sensor cause I always protect it when changing lenses. And like you said with or without the shutter down the same dust will get there when the protection opens when turning on the camera lol

      Where do you live? In my country I shine a flashlight and there is dust in the beam, floating in every direction (gravity makes no difference). The Sony sensor gets hot becomes a static magnet.

      @@godsinbox The point is that the shutter protection is not a good idea cause the shutter itself is too fragile and it doesn't protect the sensor from dust.

    I also don't trust this mechanism BUT I don't trust the Sony shutters anyway!!!
    Sadly I didn't take a photo with my phone but my A7IV's shutter actually already was jammed during a shoot this wek... One of the pieces even was bend a tiny bit... After turning it on and off multiple times it opened again. Sure... Iam waiting it to get jammed again (so I carry a 3rd backup cam with me) but without it being visibly damaged i believe Sony service won't do anything anyway.
    Here's the catch:
    I believe only the Dust Protection function allowed me, or rather the 7IV to unjam itself....
    I already had a a7III that had a jammed shutter recently (with 80k shutter count, still in repair )
    PS forgot to mention: the shutter works again normally with no damage visible - at least it pretends it does

    Can you help me with the shutter?
    I just bought a sony a6700 and accidentally touched the sensor, then the shutter closed and never opened again.
    The camera was literally turned off but the shutter closed.
    No matter what button I press, it always shows the same error message:
    "Camera Error. Turn power off then on." But the shutter stays closed and error is not fixed.
    I tried removing battery, turning the camera on when it is plugged in, fully charged.
    Nothing seems to work.
    And worst of all, I bought this camera to a foreign country and my country doesnt have any repair shop.
    Any clue how to fix it?

    Hey everyone - you should leave this on; the OP gave bad advice. It doesn’t ruin your battery life during a day or cause shutter failure. Also - you shouldn’t clean your sensor with anything but a rocket blower or an actual lens cleaning kit. Not a lens pen. This guy is going to ruin one of your cameras and you should never trust a Sony shooter for anything at this point.

    I disagree! Its worthwhile waiting those few second and later having dust and particle in your photo, so always change lens with shutter close. Second, who on earth would go and touch the lens or shutter if that matters, its designed to keep it away dust free not finger free 😂ah also even you have shutter on the sensor is not immune from direct sunlight that's what it says in the menu...

    You are substituting black carbon particles for the dust particles you are trying to remove. Your comments on how hard it is to damage the sensor glass are not accurate. A good method is to blow the sensor surface with a bulb and use a wet swab.

    wow. the fact that you say sand will get in, and it'll still be in when the shutter opens... BUT AT LEAST IT DIDN'T LAND ON THE SENSOR! And if you hold the camera down, you don't have to worry about it getting in there. Just as youd do if you had the shutter open. Also, sand can easily scratch glass... Do you own a phone? Also also, you're afraid of breaking the shutter, but not afraid of touching the sensor...? I'll trust Son'ys engineers over this guy, sorry. If it was worse than having it open, it wouldn't be a feature. The pros weigh out the cons a thousand fold. Big oof.
