Cequa and Xiidra seemed to work. I stopped Restasis after a month because of the burning sensation, so it wasn't enough time to know if it worked. I'm still using Cequa every day now.
I have serious dry eye. I used Xidra for almost 2 years. I was told it was better than Restasis. It is very expensive even with insurance it really burns. The taste didn't pass , it lasted all day
On Xiidra, mild stinging upon application but, keeping in fridge helps with that. Also, blocking tear ducts and applying right before brushing teeth helps with metallic taste. My eyes are definitely brighter and my lids no longer "cling" to my eyes.
I was on Restassis for 5 mi the with no notable do. I’ve been on Xiidra for a few days and my eyes are starting to feel less dry already. I’m very grateful ❣️
Thanks for sharing!! Yes, it may still take time for cequa to work, although I think in general I see people having faster success with it compared to Restasis. However, I have heard some people here in the comments say they experience more burning with cequa.
I have been on Restasis for years and this works well for me. However, I want to warn patients to have your eye doctor only prescribe the vials; I was prescribed the bottle with the green cap once. The bottle is very hard to open and squeezing drops out is very difficult., thus you waste half of it! After picking up from the pharmacy, you cannot return a prescription . This was about a $200 mistake!
Thank you for this educational video. I’m going to change my eye drop regime based on it. I was motivated to research Xiidra benefits versus ill effects because I can’t take the extreme BURNING Xiidra causes anymore. Based on the information you provided I will stop cyclosporine (Restasis), throw my Xiidra away, and go back to Cequa. I’ve been using both Xiidra and Restasis twice a day for years. I also used to use Cequa (yes, I used to use all three every day). Interesting that you say that Restasis burns for some people but make no mention of Xiidra burning. My experience is the opposite. Restasis never burns. I HATE Xiidra for that reason-I dread the burning so much that lately I’ve been foregoing it. And it’s not just burning on contact-the burning then persists. No other side effects. I wonder why no one else has mentioned how severely Xiidra BURNS. For a while I also used Cequa. Nothing stops my symptoms completely. I’ve been using both Xiidra and Restasis for years (I stopped the Cequa years ago just because I was sick of juggling so many medications every day). I have no issues with Restasis at all but can’t tell if it actually helps or not because my eyes still bother me incessantly even though I also use Serum tears frequently plus eye gel at night and sometimes use both heat and cold applications. For years I’ve been doing eyelid scrubs with baby shampoo. Dry eyes can have such a negative impact on quality of life it can be bad enough to want to poke your eyes out-since I don’t want to do that, it seems that checking out might be the best alternative.
I have learned so much about dry eyes from this channel. It’s simply the best eye doctor channel out there. Thank you for your dedication for bringing us these in depth videos. I currently have been a contact wearer for the past 15 years and due to over wearing a monthly pair, experienced one of the WORST dry eye flares. My vision has been blurry and I work from home so the screens definitely do not help. After some talk with my insurance, I was able to get my Xiidra covered. I’ve been on it for about 6 weeks and it’s the only thing that’s helping me get through this flare. I started to be able to actually see clearly after about 2 weeks on it. I couldn’t imagine dealing with symptoms for 3-6 months before things got better. Thanks again for the informative vid!
Hey I have a very similar situation as you. I over wore monthly contacts for years and I’m thinking that’s a reason I got dry eyes. Any tips you got for me? I get very bad fare ups. I’m thinking of trying xiidra or restasis. I how you can respond soon as I’m very tired of this feeling ): been feeling like this for the past 5 months ): it’s terrible ):
@@Churrow hi!! I would say try Xiidra first as the medication seems to start helping in 2 weeks versus months with Restasis. I was on Xiidra for a few months and then finally got in with a dry eye specialist. She recommended Lipiflow because after getting my eyes examined, I have MGD. I did the treatment and now I’m still currently on the Xiidra, and Pataday (allergy drop). My symptoms are almost fully gone and I’m able to wear my contacts again. However, I don’t wear them as much and they are daily disposable versus monthly. The best advice I can give you is find a good dry eye specialist, as my regular eye doctor really did not know how to treat it. Dry eye is usually caused by more than one thing and a typical eye doctors office does not have the needed tests and equipment to fully diagnose. Hope this helps
I have been using Restasis for 8 years. They do help my dry eye symptoms but I always think I should try Xidra. I live in Nevada where the air conditioners run full time in the summer. My symptoms are much worse in the summer and my eyes get extremely irritated and red. I always look forward to cooler weather.
I used Xiidra for four months. It gave me terrible sinusitis. It did seem to make some improvement in dry eye symptoms, but the sinusitis was way too bad to keep going with it. Now on Restasis about 4 months. Also the Dr. installed lower punctal plugs. Still have some sinus problems, but not nearly as bad. Dry eye symptoms seem modestly improved.
My Dr prescribed Cequa 2 years ago. Cured my dry eye in about 3 months and continually worked well. 2 months ago my insurance "removed it from the formulary" and would only cover xiidra which has been awful. My eyes are drier, red and irritated all the time. The drops painfully sting for several minutes, and my vision is blurry for several minutes. Trying to hang in there but after 2 months I am considering discontinuing them. (Side note: my dr appealed to my insurance to get me back on Cequa but was refused.
I use both Cequa and Xiidra in my eye with DED and corneal neuropathy. Only one medication is used in the eye with just DED, and both drugs work equally well in that eye, . Xiidra seems to give me more relief and greater tear production.
I have hashimoto which ihas caused severe dry. Years ago I try Restasis, but it didn’t have any beneficial effect Lacrisert’s were my saving grace.as well as punctal plugs, heat oacks and so much more. I just got a new doctor and he recommended the xiidra drops. Wow! Less than 2 weeks and ny eyes require less gel by about 50%. I am elated with this new treatment. It’s winter so the heats on and even with my humidifier the air is dry. In the morning I woke up and I went two hours with no eye goggles and no Lubriderm p.m. in my eyes and felt pretty good after that I did my drops and got into my regular care, but still, that was amazing.
I use the generic restasis and I can definitely tell it helps. It's not a life saver but I can definitely tell when I don't use it for a whole day. I'll keep using it for sure
What is the generic of Restasis and how much does it cost? I live in Spain and I cannot get Restasis, it was the only thing with which I have been able to control the problem with my eyes. Thank for help me.
I got two treatments of IPL and have been on Restasis about two months. Also do a warm compress twice a day, Zocushield gel at night, daily lid scrub, and preservative free drops. For some reason my left eye always feels fine but my right eye is always feeling dry or irritated.
I used Restasis after being Dx with severe dry eyes. I used it for 2 years & kept telling my Opthamologist it not only wasn’t working but seemed to make it worse. I went to a dry eye specialist and was put on Xiidra which helped the inflammatory process within a month to 6 weeks. Before this I was getting eye infections and had to go on Steroids intermittently which as a Nurse worried me. Since using Xiidra I haven’t had to use Steroids in 6 months or more. It is expensive and I wasn’t aware there was a generic. Is there more then one generic? I will check out your link for the mask. Thanks so much for sharing this with us. 😊❤
I was in Xiidra for 3 years. All of sudden it made my eyes itch after putting in the drops. It became painful. I then tried Cequa which was great but my insurance did not cover it. Now I am on Restasis. It’s been 1 month and seems ok. I guess I have to wait for 4-6 months to see real improvement.
I used Restasis, brand, for six months. Other than stinging when it first was applied, I didn't notice any difference in dryness. I discontinued it in consultation with my ophthalmologist. Tear Restore twice a day seems to be helping in conjunction with Refresh drops.
I have MGD and was on Restasis for a couple of years. My eye doctor did switch me to Xiidra for awhile and I didn’t notice a difference so I went back on the Restasis. Recently I started seeing a dry eye specialist and was switched to Cequa. It burned my eyes terribly and they actually got worse so I’m back on Restasis. I’ve also had lipiflow, the opti light therapy, Tear Care, Tyrvaya nose spray and nothing has really helped me. I’ve spent thousands of dollars. It is so frustrating. 😢
I hear you Christy! Finding the right mix of treatments can be very frustrating...and expensive. It does make me happy you found a clinic that hopefully is able to help. Did opti light do anything at all for you? (btw I know there are some really big dry eye treatments in the research pipeline so hopefully there will be something for you soon). Thinking of you and sending you healing thoughts.
@@DoctorEyeHealth thank you for your response. The opti light did take away some inflammation, which is good. The oil in my MG just doesn’t seem to keep flowing. It seems to harden very quickly. My specialist has told me there are promising treatments coming in the near future, I’m trying to stay hopeful. Love your videos!
@@snowbike8032 I really don't know. I'm not in the us, maybe try the sub reddit dry eyes and do a search "azura" or "azr-001" maybe you would find your answer or could ask some people about trials.
I started with Cequa back in 2019. Used it for 6 months and seemed to help. Recently went back with dry eyes and found out I have oil duct issues, murky oil, and a thin aqueous layer. Just started on Xiidra today!
@@Cooliewhistles Xiidra has helped but it hasn’t cured it. I have since been also prescribed Miebo drops but they work in tandem for relief until I can get in for laser.
I was diagnosed with Bells Palsy in 2015. That has resulted in severe dry syndrome. I was on Xiidra for a couple years and I absolutely hated it. First off it is expensive, burned my eyes like a Branding iron, left the nasty taste in your mouth and the little vial is not resealable. I could not read my cell phone or emails for about an hour after I put drops in my eye. Big negative in my case. Plus it did not help or relieve my eye pain. I do not recommend Xiidra, but you do you. I asked my ophthalmologist about any other meds. He put me on Restasis which is only slightly higher than Xiidra. Restasis has a cooling effect immediately when placed in my eyes. It is resealable which is big plus for me, no nasty taste in my mouth, plus I can read immediately after putting drops in my eyes. My eye have improved in making my own tears with Restasis. I have not tried the Cequa drops. I recommend Restasis to everyone.
Seen Xiidra commercials. I'm 58 dry eye for several yrs. Dec 2021, developed CNV in left, dry issue got worse after two Avastin injections for CNV, now stable scans since March, back to 20/20 ,thank God caught it early. Still it was followed by PVD, fun, all in left eye. Right is normal, just dry. Opthomologist has me using OTC Refresh Celluvisc gel. It helps some but after listening to your review, I'm thinking I need to ask about the more healing properties of Xiidra. Current is not giving much relief overnight, seems lid extra dry to a bit and scratchy when waking. Sounds like stepping up to a prescription might be worth a try. I'm very vested in my eye health and learning all I can. Thanks for the comprehensive review. Subscribed.
Wow thank you! I appreciate you sharing the info. Happy to hear your doctors caught everything early and you are back to 20/20. Super grateful for that. Celluvisc gel is great, works really well despite being an "older drop". We even use it in clinic for some procedures. It makes me happy to hear you are being such a good advocate for your own health.
Nice to see you and listen you. Both are good seeing you and listening you.God bless you my dearest doctor Allen. Thanks for such a nice and informative video.🌹
Here in France we had Restasis but it has been discontinued and now we have Ikervis which is way stronger and a lot of people complaining that they can't stand it.
Just started using Cequa a few weeks ago and was curious why it and Restasis can take so long before someone notices results (3- 6 months). Your explanation that it simply stops new inflammation from occurring was very helpful as every time I googled it just told how long it takes, but not why it takes so long. Can you do a video comparing Tyrvaya to these medications?
I really enjoy watching your videos Dr. Allen. You're very helpful when it comes to caring about the eyes. I do have one question for you and I hope you can answer it. Have you ever thought about making a video explaining the differences between ophthalmology and optometry? I remember you talking a little bit about this in a video on why you chose optometry. I think you and an ophthalmologist should get together and make a video explaining the differences between ophthalmology and optometry. I hope all of this makes sense to you as well.
@@DoctorEyeHealthhi doc! Is it possible for antidepressents to block the benefits of dry eye medications due to its related side-effects when used together?
I have been using restasis for years. Yes, it works for me. I tried Xidra as well but went back to restasis because these drops yield more lol . Once I open the restasis blister I can put the little cap on. With Xidra this wasn't possible and ended wasting medication. These 2 meds are around $600 .
So true! I never realized this about the bottles until recently. I did a small post about it on instragram. The restasis vials have more medication and the top can be put back on (although they don't want you to) and the xiidra bottles have less and they engineered the vials so you can put the top back on. Kinda lame.
It might sound sketchy but I got Restasis in Guadalajara, Mexico for 2000 pesos (100 usd). And they seem to be exactly the same as the ones I was using in San Diego (600 usd) lol.
I wish you were my eye doctor! You’re more on point with my dry eye questions through a screen than when I ask my doctors in person. I’ve had lasik surgery, and have been having severe dry eye ever since. It gets to the point where it irritates my eye and causes my vision to fluctuate. Throughout my first 8 months of lasik I’ve tried many many manyyy dry eye products and have found that Oasis Tears Plus and Refresh Relieva PF have worked best for me. I have been given the Xiidra Prescription recently so it’s nice to see the best Eye doctor Review them !
I had VERY severe dry eye with inflamation and swelling of my eyes to where they were half closed and extremely light sensitive. Couldn't go out in sunlight or look at a computer screen. Kelowna BC. Allergies, drought with extremely dry air, heat wave where one day temps got to 50C. (122 Fahrenheit). And if that wasn't enough, smoke from forest fires thick in the air. Six different prescriptions later, including allergy eye drops and steroids my eyes were much better, and finally I went on Xiidra. Well the smoke, dry air and heat were gone by that time and one month on Xiidra I was to the point where I went off all medication except omega 3 oral capsules and Systane eye drops very occasionally.
WOW this is was great to read!!! It makes me so happy to hear you were able to fight through all of that. Also very happy you were able to heal up and now only on a few treatments. I hope more people can read your story and feel some hope.
@@DoctorEyeHealth Thanks. Honestly was probably the smoke put me over the edge. Like sitting at a campfire and smoke constantly blowing into your eyes. Well and the heat... OK like trying to cook a marshmellow in a fork with the wind blowing the smoke in your face.
I have been on xxidra for three weeks now…I am finding relief from very severe dry eye for years now…I can actually read an entire article and my light sensitivity seems better. I just feel brighter in the eye area after years of squinting at the slightest glare or light. I am not positive but something is happening. The slight taste in the back of the throat is not a big deal at all and only lasts a few moments…not bad at all nor the stinging compared to the severity of my condition. It also only lasts moments and I actually feel better relief wise within 5 minutes after applying. Maybe that is just the liquid soothing the eye once burn is gone. Again. It’s not bad at all. So…we will see. I am hopeful for the first time in a decade now.
I love Restasis! Unfortunately, my eye doctors kept putting me on Xidra, which I hate! It burns like fire. I just couldn't do it. I was finally able to get the generic and am thrilled with it. I think it may be better than Restasis.
Unlikely critic, hello. Question(s): You mentioned you tried Xiidra (I’m currently on it for two weeks now) and it burned bad? How long did the burn last. Im also experiencing burning after I put in eyes.. it seems to go away about 2-3 min. 2. When you mentioned generic, are you speaking about a generic for the Xiidra? If so,is there a name for it? Thnx
I could not get pass the taste of xiidra it would upset my stomach so bad tried all the tricks and some times would taste it for 2-6 hours later!! The taste would go away then all of a sudden would get a new rush of it. my doc just switched me to Restasis and I didn't think it was working as well but with you saying can take 3 months to see significant improvement that has me more confident to keep trying and hope it helps (just switched last week)
My dr gave me a month supply of xiidra and it worked for me but unfortunately my insurance barely covers any of the monthly cost leaving me with a car note left to pay. I used xiidras coupon code for another month, but unfortunately my search continues. I’d love your thoughts or videos on MSM drops and\or regener-eyes. Thanks for all the info you give us.
Price is a huge factor for people. For medications that are designed to be used long term it seems a bit ridiculous that they are so expensive yet, very safe. I am looking more into MSM eye drop research and hope to have some info on it soon. I did speak a bit on regener-eyes in a previous video ruclips.net/video/XqJNSlGymxE/видео.html
I really need a prescription I think. My eyes get so dry I’ve had ocular abrasions as a result, even with using eye drops. I have a checkup with my ophthalmologist this week and will ask her about that.
My eye doctor prescribed me restasis but my insurance didn't want to pay for it because it's so expensive. Finally they did but I tried one vial and it actually made my eyes dry out more and were burning and redness. I also did some research because I'm not a medication person I'm into natural remedies but read that restasis can cause skin cancer and blindness.
It's not immediate relief. He said it can take time to work on this video based on the science. Watch it again. Also my Dr said to keep it in the fridge to reduce stinging and burning
I have had MGD for decades, with all the attendant issues, well before all this information and all these helpful products were available. I seemed to gat a very slight rash from Restasis on the skin area just at the end of the outer eye so my Dr gave me samples of Xiidra. However, from your explanation of the two medications, it would seem that Restasis is more appropriate for my eye condition. Would you comment on that? BTW, I have gotten more information from this site than I have received in the last 40+ yrs of treatments. Thank you.
Great video. Always wondered more about this....as far as I know, there are no major trials comparing xiidra vs restasis. What's your thoughts on whats better in lasik dry eye/complications. Thanks...
After watching another one of your vids, I have either dry eye or ocular rosacea. I was prescribed Restasis for dry eye, but both it & Xiidra are prohibitively expensive for my budget. So I have followed other tips with some success, not where I want to be yet.
I have both dry eye and ocular rosacea. Currently on generic restasis for dry eye and erythromycin eye ointment for ocular rosacea. I still use eye drops and sometimes gel lubricant, but feel so much better
Cequa made my eyes burn badly. Couldn't use. Have used xidra for the past couple of years with no problems until recently. Now they seem to dry my eyes out even more and lots of pain.
I just started Xiidra three days ago and my eyes seem worse. They sting all day long. Even when I close them they hurt. It’s just this constant burning sensation. I thought it was just the dry eye flaring up but now I don’t know. I did get a little taste in throat from the drops but wasn’t bad. I had the blurry vision at first and would be clear then I blink and blurry again but would go away after 20 minutes. Now it doesn’t seem as bad. I was thinking of skipping tonight and tomorrow dose to see if the burning goes away. This whole dry eye thing sucks so bad 😭. I’m so over it.
i used restsis for about a year, the last time i put it in i instantly got painful eyes and my right eye twitched that very moment. I had terrible eye pain and watery eyes for days, the twitching lasted a month nonstop. I threw it in the garbage and will never touch it again. Havent put anything in my eyes after that, it was very scary especially the twitching eye
Well I personally liked Xidra unfortunately my ins would not pay for it, but my Ins did pay for Restasis. I have bad gritnes that looks like glitter, floaters, dry eye syndrome, some light Caterax in right eye, photophobia all bright lights give me migraines especially all LED lights & those florescent lights. Tinted windows do help & tinted windows are a pain in the butt, they have to be kept clean, dust free, RainX 12 coats per window, as having an exemption It has reduced migraines for night time driving & to prevent further damage in the future. Thanks you , for going over both medications. Xidra seemed to work immediately for me when my eye DR gave me some samples, no dry eyes after about the fourth day in a weeks packet, so I picked up the Restasis 15-4-23 , so I will not know the full benefits of Restasis tell a few months from now, as I got a a full year supply. Hopefully I can come back to this video, and let you know how the Restasis works 3-4 months from now. :) Most importantly keeping our bodies hydrated with lots of filtered clean water, great non GMO Vitamins & Minerals.
OOh that is the important question now isn't it. The companies that make them of course, want people to stay on them haha. But for my patients who have success, if they are able to modify their lifestyle then I have been able to ween people off of them. I think Xiidra may be easier to ween off and restart if someone fails without it, as cyclosporine takes time to be effective.
Do these pharmaceutical treatments permanently cure dry eyes (for some people, I'm guessing) after a few years of taking them? (Because that's what it sounds like.) Or, do patients need to take it fo a long time, maybe even to the point of depending on these drugs for dry eyes and can't go without.
The pharma companies probably want people to stay on them forever. I like to think of them similar to "anti-depressants", You can use them indefinitely, but they are best when used in conjunction with other therapy to solve the root issue. Once the root issue is addressed, then maybe you can let off the medication. Does that make sense?
My doctor wanted to prescribe Cequa for me but my insurance wouldn't cover it ,so I've been using Xiidra. Sometimes it just doesn't work for me and my eyes feel dryer after I put the drops in.
Yeah, working with insurance is a B. I have had one patient who really struggled with the Xiidra side effects and switching to Cylcosporine did help. I think Cequa just launched a thing where if you don't get approved you can get it for a cash price of like 90 dollars i think? It may depend on where you live.
@@DoctorEyeHealth Thanks, that's good to know. My tears disintegrate but I also have inflammation so I'm really confused as to what will work best, or maybe a combination of drops. 🤷♂️
Is it possible that the inflammation is causing the dryness and not the other way around? Then using a warm compress makes the inflammation worse, hence the cycle continues? Find the source of the inflammation, and stop the cycle; maybe diet related etc.?
WONDERFUL to know DR I don't know some times I have dry eye and some times takes long time to use any drops how can you explain this I use blink eye drops thanks Dr for the wonderful videos
My doctor told me I didn’t have inflammation so Restasis wasn’t going to work. Should I see another doctor? Watching this video sort of confirms that but maybe not directly? If the dry eye is not with inflammation, then these drops are a waste?
Not necessarily, the drops could help prevent future inflammation from dryness. Plus cyclosporine may have benefits for goblet cell development and tear production. But perhaps there are better options for you if you don't have inflammation going on.
@@DoctorEyeHealth Hi, I have severe dry eye disease, I've been with Restasis for 10 years and it's the only thing I could lead a normal life with, but now I can't get it anywhere, I only have two boxes left and I'm desperate, I live in Spain and my only option here is to use the magistral formula of cyclosporine, do you think it can work? Thank you
I just took my first dose of Xidra after Restasis didn't work for me after 2 months. Awful taste in the back of my throat.. I don't understand why they cannot make an eye drop with minimal side effects that works.
Hlo doctor, my ophthalmologist prescribed chloroquine phosphate 0.03% instead of cyclosporine 0.05% for my aqueous deficiency dry eye treatment. Can you please say about effectiveness of chloroquine phosphate for aqueous deficiency dry eye treatment
hey thanks for asking! Super interesting question. Chloroquine phosphate has been shown in some studies to help as an adjunct treatment for dry eye. It is believed to also help by reducing inflammation. I will see if I can dig more up on it. How is it helping?
@@DoctorEyeHealthHey doctor , I used chloroquine phosphate for just around one month. I feel chloroquine phosphate works better than cyclosporin for me. Thank you for your reply doctor
I tried Xiidra first but developed red irritation to eyes and eyelid corners. The irritation got pretty bad. I’m using Restasis, but am starting to have the same problem now. My Dr. prescribed Cequa but insurance won’t cover it.
I heard Cequa is now offering a cash price for people who dont get coverage. I think its less than 100USD for a month. But that may depend on where you live.
A somewhat tangential question, what are your opinions on the various ant-cataract eye drops? Are they completely bogus, or is there some actual positive data?
You know, I had a lot of people ask about those a few years back. I dug into the research then, maybe 2019. The little data out there was based on animal studies that some eye drops could prevent or maybe eliminate some clouding of the crystalline lens. However, the research I had read did not show too much promise, and I did not see anything specific for humans. I will look into it again though, maybe some new research has come out. But be sure, if it ever becomes a real thing, a pharma company will buy it for billions of dollars and charge thousands of dollars for it. It will not be a 15 dollar drop sold on amazon. (sad truth)
I had the Bruder mask that was recommended by my eye doc. After seeing a other eye doctor I was diagnosed with ocular rosacea and using warm compresses are awful for this diagnosis!
the medications were designed to be a lifelong medication, but I have successfully weened patients off of them as they developed better lifestyle changes to help manage their disease and flare ups. It can be challenging, depending on the severity of the disease, but can be done.
I have MGD and some Blepharitis. I'm 58 yo female and active in the outdoors on a daily basis. If there is any wind at all, even wind that I create when I bike ride, my eyes are red and sore the rest of the day. I have tried many natural interventions now for two weeks in addition to heat packs at the end of each day (for several months now) and have not seen a change so am thinking that I'll end up on medication. I live in Alaska and winter bike and/or xc ski nearly every day. Do you have a medication recommendation? I'm looking for wind goggles but I am very small and have a small face. Many of these are quite large.
I have tried Eye Eco moisture chambers that had a small option (although it was probably medium), but they did bend around the nose making them smaller. Perhaps those could help while biking ? As far as medication recommendations, the videos on the channel here can hopefully provide you with education about what is available and what the medications do, but ultimately, your local doctor is going to have to help you with that. This video is pretty comprehensive if you have not seen it : ruclips.net/video/XqJNSlGymxE/видео.html
I am currently using Restasis but I am not sure if I see results yet. For the eye compress, it is a good idea but if you are wearing glasses how does it work?
That is true! I have suggested to the makers of it to consider making a spot on the nose so that frames could be worn over it. I have been able to do it, but the lenses are really far out from your face. It does work, just not ideal.
I initially was put on cequa through samples and had great results. Unfortunately my insurance wouldn’t cover it so I was forced to be put on generic Restasis. Health insurance is a joke.
@@niellalien it’s working but I hate that it makes my eyes sting. I initially started using it because retinoid use in my under eye area was contributing to gland issues, it seems to have resolved the issue.
Hi Doctor Eye Health. I heard some people healed their years lasting dry eyes with Autoimmune Protocol Diet (AIP). As Restasis is an immunosuppressive drug, can we conclude that if Restasis works for someone, AIP may work as well?
I don't think that is a bad idea at all. I have also heard people have great success on a plant based vegan diet. I also know some dry eye specialists who recommend the Whole 30 diet. Eliminating processed foods I think is key.
I like the Precision 1 lens as my go to. works for about 90% of the time. The total 1 is also fantastic. The new B&L Infuse is great too. If you have a chance to try the Eyeris lens its a great value. Acuvue just released the new MAX lens but I have not been able to try it yet.
Hey Dr Allen, quick question about that warm compress mask.. is it applying any warmth to the upper lids though? Appears like it would only be effective for the lower glands...?
@@DoctorEyeHealth thank you cuz when I was a child I got hit on ma eye with something back in Haiti now I see a little blurry, but when I wear glasses it make ma eye red and won’t stop watering
Restasis was useless....it did nothing at all for me. Tyrvaya has been great. Noticeable improvement almost immediately. Will ask my eye physician about Xiidra...
Dr . Allen, I thanks for your work . I am 17 and I have been suffering from dry eye for two years . Now I use almost all treatment methods that you recommended ( Omega-3, good sleep , blinking, physical activity, oil based drops and ointments , warm compresses , glasses against wind ) . I have lost about 40 % of meobian glands. Can I restore my glands ? You actually told a lot of about managing this disease , long term battle. I understand that is life long disease, but are there at least some studies that show that meobian glands can be grow back?
What are your thoughts on red light therapy for dry eye? I did seven treatments of IPL and unfortunately did not have any positive results. If you do recommend it, do you recommend any of the devices you can purchase or only the ones that you can go into a medical office or medical spa?
Great questions! Yes, I am hoping to have a video on the amniotic treatments we perform at our clinic. Otherwise in short for the miboflo and gland expression, miboflo works as a thermal heating treatment. Similar to Lipiflow or ilux devices, but Miboflo does not have the expression component like lipoflow and ilux does. The expression is kinda fun to perform, but I personally think its important for the eyelids to be scraped/ keratin build up to be removed first before any of these treatments. At my previous clinic, I have had several patient pay cash for them to come in and have their glands expressed after a warm compress procedure (much lower cost than using lipiflow or similar device), and the few patients who did that loved it and would come in a few times a year to have it done. Sadly, I don't have much research to compare that to, but I think it helps in some situations.
@@DoctorEyeHealth Yes this does help. I am in the process of the MiboFlo and Gland expression after heat compresses and just wanted to have your opinion on the treatments as your suggestions for eye Drops have helped me tremendously. Love watching your RUclips videos
💥QOTD: Have ever used Xiidra or Restasis? What has your experience been?
I've used all 3 and prefer Cequa and Xiidra. Restasis burned too much.
The taste didn't pass , it lasted all day
No I haven't this is something new to me do you need prescription? Or you can get it of the counter
On Xiidra, mild stinging upon application but, keeping in fridge helps with that. Also, blocking tear ducts and applying right before brushing teeth helps with metallic taste. My eyes are definitely brighter and my lids no longer "cling" to my eyes.
I liked Xiidra, it took I believe a week for my eyes to feel better but it worked. I got a free trial and wanted more but they are expensive.
Glad to hear they helped! I know they are just being purchased by another company so perhaps the price will come down?
I was on Restassis for 5 mi the with no notable do. I’ve been on Xiidra for a few days and my eyes are starting to feel less dry already. I’m very grateful ❣️
Are you still using Xiidra? Im thinking of switching from Restasis
Restais takes around 60 days to be effective.
I tired all 3 and I found cequa works the best for me! I have extremely dry eyes and did not get much relief from cequa drops until about 3 months in
Thanks for sharing!! Yes, it may still take time for cequa to work, although I think in general I see people having faster success with it compared to Restasis. However, I have heard some people here in the comments say they experience more burning with cequa.
It took me 6 months of Cequa before I had significant improvement. Very happy with it now
I have been on Restasis for years and this works well for me.
Hey thanks so much for sharing! I plan to do a video soon on Serum vs PRP tears. But I hope you can find some relief soon
@@lizditaranto2249 thank you soooo much you’re the best. I will look for a dry eye specialist
@@lizditaranto2249how was the LipiFlow treatment? I am scheduled for one in 3 weeks. Did it help?

I have been using Restasis for 8 years. They do help my dry eye symptoms but I always think I should try Xidra. I live in Nevada where the air conditioners run full time in the summer. My symptoms are much worse in the summer and my eyes get extremely irritated and red. I always look forward to cooler weather.
That dry desert air can for sure be a problem. The corneal nerves are more sensitive to the cold.
You probably didn't block the ducts after putting them in
My Dr prescribed Cequa 2 years ago.
I’m so excited I am seeing this. My dr just gave me Xiidra. I’m watching
How are you eyes?
How does it work for you
Cequa has been my game changer so far!
happy to hear!
Thanks for sharing that Donald!

@@susanlong8978 ?? I can always use what I’m using. Insurance pays about 1/3 to 1/2.
Thank you, doctor, for the information and for the individual comments.
You are very welcome
I used Restasis, brand, for six months. Other than stinging when it first was applied, I didn't notice any difference in dryness. I discontinued it in consultation with my ophthalmologist. Tear Restore twice a day seems to be helping in conjunction with Refresh drops.

I still have issues with eyes but xiidra does help. 😢
@@DoctorEyeHealth thank you for your response. The opti light did take away some inflammation, which is good. The oil in my MG just doesn’t seem to keep flowing. It seems to harden very quickly.

My Dr recommended to keep drops in the fridge to reduce stinging and burning
Both. My dry eye specialist prescribed me to use them for MGD (R) dry eye disease (L).
I tried both Xiidra and Restasis and Xiidra definitely worked best for me. I do get that nasty aftertaste from Xiidra every time I use it.
Thanks for sharing! Have you tried either blocking the ducts or brushing your teeth at the same time?
Just started using Cequa a few weeks ago and was curious why it and Restasis can take so long before someone notices results (3- 6 months). Your explanation that it simply stops new inflammation from occurring was very helpful as every time I googled it just told how long it takes, but not why it takes so long.
Can you do a video comparing Tyrvaya to these medications?
My understanding is that Tyrvaya helps you to produce more of your own tears, but it does not address the inflammation.

Kinda lame.

No problem 😊

Once on these medications, do you have to stay on them for the rest of your life or can these medications help and actually cure your dry eye??
OOh that is the important question now isn't it. The companies that make them of course, want people to stay on them haha. But for my patients who have success, if they are able to modify their lifestyle then I have been able to ween people off of them. I think Xiidra may be easier to ween off and restart if someone fails without it, as cyclosporine takes time to be effective.
However., at this time, dry eye technically cannot be cured, only managed :-(
@@DoctorEyeHealth Thank you 🙂
What's your thoughts on clinical effectiveness between the two, including both subjective and objective signs?
Have you seen one to work better?
When using Restasis--what happens if I use the same vial twice a day,or put 2 drops in-very expensive to not use all of it.
Some people share the vial for night -> morning since those two spans of time are usually closer than morning -> night but ask your doctor
Been on Restasis generic for 5 months. Have noticed a little improvement so far
Is it possible that the inflammation is causing the dryness and not the other way around? Then using a warm compress makes the inflammation worse, hence the cycle continues?
Find the source of the inflammation, and stop the cycle; maybe diet related etc.?
I think the warm compress is to liquify the oil
My dr told me women have dry eye way more than men - and he pointed to make up as a large problem. (Mascara etc)
Can you please make a video on how to read and interpret the corneal topography report .
For any specific condition? or using any specific device?

WONDERFUL to know DR I don't know some times I have dry eye and some times takes long time to use any drops how can you explain this I use blink eye drops thanks Dr for the wonderful videos
So your symptoms are inconsistent? Or is the question why the eye drops sometimes take a long time to come out of the bottle?
@@DoctorEyeHealth Thank you soo much doctor
@@harishguna4191 the doctor also asked you “how is it helping” when he replied to your comment. Please answer back as I’m interested too.
@@DoctorEyeHealthHey doctor , I used chloroquine phosphate for just around one month. I feel chloroquine phosphate works better than cyclosporin for me. Thank you for your reply doctor
@@DoctorEyeHealthis chloroquine phosphate immunosuppressive like restasis?
Thankyou 👍👍👍👍
I tried Xiidra first but developed red irritation to eyes and eyelid corners. The irritation got pretty bad. I’m using Restasis, but am starting to have the same problem now. My Dr. prescribed Cequa but insurance won’t cover it.
I heard Cequa is now offering a cash price for people who dont get coverage. I think its less than 100USD for a month. But that may depend on where you live.
Doc, does Cyclosporine eye drop cause cancer? I was reading packet of info and got scared when it was talking about mice getting cancer.
Thank you!
Can I have yours 😅
Once you get to a comfortable level, can you get off these meds? Or is there a rebound effect upon stopping? Is it more likely a lifelong medication?
the medications were designed to be a lifelong medication, but I have successfully weened patients off of them as they developed better lifestyle changes to help manage their disease and flare ups. It can be challenging, depending on the severity of the disease, but can be done.
Does xiidra address inflammation? I heard it doesn’t and that’s why restasis is better.
Xiidra and Restasis both address inflammation, but through different mechanisms.
Good job ,
I am currently using Restasis but I am not sure if I see results yet.
How is the generic Restasis working for you?
@@niellalien it’s working but I hate that it makes my eyes sting. I initially started using it because retinoid use in my under eye area was contributing to gland issues, it seems to have resolved the issue.
@@jamescraggs7764my Dr said to keep it in the fridge to reduce stinging and burning
Cequa seems to be working better for me then xiidra, but will ultimately need surgery i assume due to my eyes not fully closing when i blink
Do you know what surgery they plan to do?
Can you use either of these medications with glaucoma❓
Yep, either. They do not increase the eye pressure.
Please can anyone tell me which monthly contact lenses brand are best and comfort.
I like the Precision 1 lens as my go to. works for about 90% of the time. The total 1 is also fantastic. The new B&L Infuse is great too. If you have a chance to try the Eyeris lens its a great value. Acuvue just released the new MAX lens but I have not been able to try it yet.
@@DoctorEyeHealth thanks for replying. What about B&L iconnect ??
Hey Dr Allen, quick question about that warm compress mask.. is it applying any warmth to the upper lids though? Appears like it would only be effective for the lower glands...?
Wondering the same
Where can I clean my eye, like I did and out , and this yellow and red thing on ma eye?? Pls reply I’m in Florida
I would find the nearest Eye Clinic. They should be able to help.
@@DoctorEyeHealth thank you cuz when I was a child I got hit on ma eye with something back in Haiti now I see a little blurry, but when I wear glasses it make ma eye red and won’t stop watering

How long should you use restadis or xxidrs? Any dangers?
Restasis was useless....it did nothing at all for me. Tyrvaya has been great. Noticeable improvement almost immediately. Will ask my eye physician about Xiidra...
I love tyrvaya too! It works great for me
Watched this video to find out which is better like the title promises. Never discussed.
I personally like Cequa the best, but it still depends on the case.
Does restasis feeling of burning after instillation is something to worry about?
No. My Dr said to keep it in the fridge to reduce stinging and burning
What are your thoughts on red light therapy for dry eye? I did seven treatments of IPL and unfortunately did not have any positive results. If you do recommend it, do you recommend any of the devices you can purchase or only the ones that you can go into a medical office or medical spa?
Hey ... I started Restasis 5 days ago. I now have a rash that won't go away! Plus cyclosporin has some bad side effects! I guess I need to stop!
Im waiting for approval from the V.A. hospital, for mine ,im going through alot of desperation and anxiety, my left eye is on fire 🔥..
I use Ziidra, Restasis didn’t work for me. Can you discuss Amniotic membrane treatments and Miboflo, along with gland expressions?

Yes this does help. I am in the process of the MiboFlo and Gland expression after heat compresses and just wanted to have your opinion on the treatments as your suggestions for eye Drops have helped me tremendously. Love watching your RUclips videos
