I think your tutorials are great you have taught me so much on the short time since I discovered you😊thank you for taking the time to do this I really appreciate your time😊
Looks so easy but... Especially to see 9 values. It's amazing how you get so natural skin tones with basic colors. I will definitely have to practice this! Thank you again for your time and effort! Greetings from Croatia!
Such great teaching Dave, thanks so much for these. I've learned loads, most importantly that when I draw something and it just isn't right, it just means it's not finished yet. Please keeping making more videos!!
Really appreciate the comment Ruby! ... so pleased that you are finding value in my videos, that's is a very important point, perseverance is the key :-) ... be sure to hit that notification bell so you won't miss any future uploads. Happy Drawing! :-)
Loved this video of the nose. The text at the bottom of the screen sometimes covered up your work and I couldn't see what you were doing.. And I loved the addition of the relaxing music to put me into a "zone" of relaxation!
Thank you... regarding the text at bottom. I created the video without subtitles... you can turn off the subtitles option by tapping on the settings Icon. Thank you for the feedback and watching the video... much appreciated 🙏
Thanks for letting us look over your shoulder and your extreme helpful comments (and after many years of communication with Americans I love to hear your georgous british accent 😉). It is the first time for me to get such a good impression of drawing human skin. Especially your work with the complementary colours is impressive. Thanks again and a nice christmas for you and your family from an art student in Germany.
Hi Matthias... thank you so much for taking the time to comment... really appreciate your kind feedback... it thrills me that you find value in the videos. I like to keep things simple and using primaries and there complimentary colour is just that. Take care 😊🙏
Hi Henna, thank you so much for taking the time to leave a comment. I am thrilled that you love the videos and are getting value from them, means so much to me. :-)
Thank you so much Peter!... appreciated. I'm always learning, that's what makes art so interesting... I never get bored. Glad you find value in my videos. Cheers! 🙏🙏
Hi Emeral, practice makes all the difference... eventually it will be second nature for sure. Thanks for watching the videos, much appreciated... all the very best. Dave
Great video, not to fast, not to long, great tips in it. (Can you show us the different in pencils for cool and warm colors please?) and is it possible to show us the reference photo in the video so we can look with you while you are drawing? Greetings from the Netherlands/Julia Bos
Hi Julia... many thanks for the kind words :-) I'm looking into making that work... I have some issues with how to get the right angle, but will experiment with this. All the very best my friend... take care and be well.
I always feel like I've won the lottery when I see that you've posted a video. You asked for ideas for future videos. How about one on darker skin tones? I've been branching out and doing different portraits and find it difficult sometimes to go dark enough. I'd love to see you approach something like that with your primaries.
wow! that's for the great feedback Nannette! Have you checked out my Will Smith video part 1 and part2 I go into depth on darker skins. needed to add a couple of browns to the selection of pencils. :-)
Dave I to am getting addicted to your videos, need a high tolerance for smart devices tho. I like premix colors for skin tone. Its will take time to adapt using red, n blue for shadows? I need to stay positive, and free my mind, and open my heart!😂
Hi Jerry... thanks for watching my videos 😀 Best to use colours that are pre mixed then and just change them up by glazing red blue yellow or green over them. Keep at it it will come together for sure... All the best 🙏
HI happy to find your channel!!! I would really like to see a video on the colors like maybe a chart as to what primary and secondary colors. Also if possible could you do a video with just one type of pastel for instance just using the carbothello for us that don't have the money to buy multiple sets? Please keep the videos coming there are not a lot of channels to learn pastel portraits. Thanks again for all your hard work.
Great suggestion! will probably do a video on which individual pencils I use as I only use about four of the conti d paris ones and not many of the Caran d ache ones... will look into it at one point.
Thank you Dave - this tutorial was marvelous, not too fast. In these 3 videos of yours which I have just watched, I have learnt so much! Such great tips. Your'e a fantastic teacher. What do you recomend for paper? I brought some pastelmat in different colours, does that sound ok? Thanks so much once again.
You are welcome Lynda, thrilled you are finding my content interesting and helpful... means a lot to me. Appreciate the kind words, all the very best... thank you so much for watching. 🙏😊
Thanks for the suggestion Juul.. they are too many variables to do a value scale... what I rely on is to squint my eyes to see the values, open they to see colours. 🙏
Any recommendations for pencils for realistic sketching. I am a beginner and using normal pencils. Also can I use Faber Castell pitpastel pencil for realistic drawing. You help will be highly appreciated. Thank you 👍
Hi Ruby... pitpastel pencils are popular with a lot of artists... I haven't personally used them, however, you should be able to use the same method. I have a list of the pencils I use in any description below my videos... so be sure to take a look. All the best ... Dave 🙏
Welcome Poncho! Thank you. Mostly for blending I use my fingers or blend pencil on pencil. For detailed areas I use a colour shaper and paper stumps. All the details are in my description below each video. Take care and stay safe 🙏🙏
Awesome video. Just wondering about those "color shapers" and how they compare to a Q-tip (or ear bud as you Brits call them) or a paper stump. Thanks again Dave.
Hi Jill... The colour shapers are good for the fine details, if you check out how to draw wrinkles in pastels video in my channel, I talk a little more about using cotton buds and the other. So thrilled you are enjoying them, thanks for the comment, my pleasure making them. :-)
Hola, no es posible escuchar en español, sin embargo, acabo de agregar subtítulos para que los veas. Hi there, it is not possible to hear in Spanish, however I have just added subtitles for you to see. 🙏😊
You have great tips, but I never watch all of it bcuz at this speed it isn’t helpful. I’m not sure what you mean by “slowing it down is hard to explain.” I have found another artist Renso art who does full real time, live pastel and oil portraits. I’ve learned a great deal from him, but he’s not using pastelmat and that’s what I’d like to move on to. Since nobody else bothers to do real time portrait work on pastelmat I’ll be sticking with the canson.
Hi... I have a lot of videos in my channel with realtime footage here and there... consider joining me on Patreon... there are many videos some 10 hours long realtime audio and video... check out my Library of Patreon videos. The mind can be our worse energy for sure. I find it best to connect to the heart. 😊

This was cool to watch, I've follow up a little with the nose, my skin colors came out decent need more practice.

Is there a real time version of this tutorial?
Hi.. not for this tutorial, I have real time ones on my patreon if you would like to join. 🙏
Do you do one on one private online classes
Hi Hudson... will be opening a Patreon page once I have sussed out how to improve on real-time videoing.
How do we enter the giveaway on Instagram
I will be posting the giveaway on Saturday 15th August so keep a look out... good luck!
An artist can see soooooooo many colours....that a normal person can not see....
Its seems that way, I love colour so much, thanks for the comment.
What type of paper
Pastelmat dark grey
Se puede oír en castellano.?
