I never knew their was a tour of this kit!! This set always made the most sense out of his big kits. Its just two medium normal looking kits put together in the middle. The one purple one he had though i thought was just real messy looking
Sweet kit. I still have my Tama Saturn 12 plus 1 from 1978-79(?). Way back in the day. I've had other drummer ask me how do you play something like this and the answer is you don't have to use every drum in every song.
Great kit... But my favorite for several reasons is the purple/green/red monster! It was the first one that I saw live in a Portnoy workshop in Portugal 🇵🇹 ...Back in 1999... I think! 🤔
@@mattnormandrums My guess is to avoid tripping on it. Might also be sonic reason; the relationship between the width and the length gives you different sounds depending.
I'm incredibly disappointed & frustrated that he didn't even mention or acknowledge this particular drum, especially as unique & important it is to him and his overall setup. So glad & appreciative that YOU brought the info & specs behind this really cool, interesting and different custom piece of percussion to light... Seriously it was driving me nuts lol
Mike você gosta de bateria? Apenas um pouco! Vem aqui meu cachorro BUMBO, meu papagaio SPLASH, meu gato CRASH, meu filho Max smacks...hehehe ...Isso é muito bom.
Year 2 of rebuilding this set in my own way, the main set is done minus max stscks and Octobans I have the other Sabians and a white pearl tama superstar kit with his sizes, nkw to save 6k more for the small drumset part, which will be a bonham amber acrylic set
I know this is a really old comment and I'm sorry for necroing it, but here's Mike's explanation from his archived FAQ: In 1993, as Dream Theater was starting to “break,” I was getting many drum endorsement offers. Because I had been playing Tama for so many years, I felt the need to “play the field” a bit before “getting married.” Mapex was starting to establish themselves as an up and coming company, and I liked the idea of being “a big fish in a little pond” as opposed to vise versa. (unfortunately later on, I became a big fish dying in an empty swimming pool!!! ) Jump ahead...I decide to go with Mapex...they build me a beautiful U.S. Maple kit...I love it. Problem #1 - shortly after, they stopped offering the US Maple series to the public, which means I am playing and endorsing a type of drum set that the public can't even buy. Problem #2 - They changed U.S. distributors and the drums were very hard to find in stores...and I had started doing alot of clinics, which meant that I was playing clinics on Tama drums, Pearl drums, DW drums, Yamaha drums, etc. because the dealers weren't dealing Mapex. I then did a few very *high profile* drum festivals where I strongly suggested to Mapex that they might want to consider shipping my kit with me in order for Mapex to be properly represented at the shows. They asked for me and my management to arrange for the shipping and send them the bills. A few months later when we were waiting to be re-imbursed for the *10's of thousands* of dollars we laid out for them, they told me they wouldn't re-imburse us until I signed onto them for another 3 years!!! I flipped my lid, told them I will *definitely* not be re-signing to them unless they paid back my manager (which they immediately did) and then I split. As word got out, the drum companies came running back to me - and ultimately, I returned to my first love (Tama - who had just introduced the great new Starclassic line) and I've been back home ever since!
I know this one is old and probably someone already pointed this out, but here goes nothing.... so, he's basically beating up his kids on stage, hahaha
RIP the drum tech
I'm so happy to see these after recent events.
my favorite drum kit.. my favorite DT days..
The Marlene signature drum stool. Dude. LOL.
Love that kit. Octavarium is my favorite DT album.
Mike you are genius

Fun fact over half of octavarium was played on the small lot. 4 songs plus the first part of scarified sons
Interesting that the "floor tom" between both kits is a 14x5.5 Melody Master snare as a Tom. Love it
It's actually a 14x6, if the various diagrams around the Web are to be believed.
Why do you think he used such a shallow drum for his 14” tom?
@@mattnormandrums My guess is to avoid tripping on it. Might also be sonic reason; the relationship between the width and the length gives you different sounds depending.
@@Swedish_Drummer he got such a low note out of a shallow floor tom. Very interesting drum.

Really I like so much just DW

Thanks.
Anyone know what the exact snare drum on the Bonham half of the kit is?
My thacher is my idol Im suhu engkau adalah inpiransiku
does anybody know what are that kind of shims which hold up the stands? There's no simpy rack clamps look at 2:57 on the right side

I present to you... My Albino Monster
Why do I want Blue Gatorade now...
Really DW is the best drums on the world infact
Sonor shits all over DW
Dw is so overrated
I know Portnoy likes Tamas a lot but was he signed with Mapex for a short period? His first dvd shows him with a giant Mapex kit.
Yup. He was with Mapex from 1994-96.

@@Kookiebiskit Thanks much dude. Appreciate the very detailed answer!
@@Kookiebiskitthat's really interesting, I'd never heard that explanation before
What hihat use? Hhx 14?

Which cd is this off?
@Aaron P. Chur mate
Dear mike,, portnoy, why don't you use DW???
I live in Iran and here is not DW even 1 kit 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢 even 1 kit 😢😢
3:25 + 9:21 how is it not possible to love Mike?
I think it's imposible not to admire him, he's the reason why I'm still playing drums, but, we're still waiting for the "Marlene" cymbal or pedal
@@ricardosalluca4171I wanna see the Marlene Tambourine. Would arguably be the catchiest name of the three MP signature stuff.
🇨🇭🙏♥️
It's overkill. Be honest.
That's the point though, it's supposed to be fun.
should have portnoy and mangini on it for a song
They did a drum battle/duet on stage at a DT show years before Mangini was in the band, you can find it on YT
ill have to try to find it thanks
Please send me DW dear lovely likey
John Bonham did all of this with one bass drum, a snare and three tom toms.
three???? hah, what a poser. elvin jones did all of this with two. kids these days are so spoiled......
😅
Bonham did not play this complex of music💀 what are you talking about about
@@Sixdramaticsystemsfromamemory yet he was one of the greatest rock drummers of all time....
Good old big kit hate. I've never ever seen a big kit drummer dunking on someone for playing a small kit. The opposite though, constantly...

Nothing beats beating drums and cymbals named after your kids instead of beating your kids, right?
Yes, quite brilliant thinking right there honestly ;) lol
