I discovered Eva Cassidy 20 years ago not long after she passed away in 1996. She died at the age of 33 from cancer tragically. I believe along with others that she is one of the great female vocalists in the last 50 years. Her voice was crystal clear and each word brought emotion. Her version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow is considered by many to be the finest recording ever of that song. On another note, If you like classic vocalists, you should check out Angelina Jordan. She is 15 now, but started singing publicly when she was just 7 years old, and one Norway's Got Talent at that age! She was a child prodigy. Her forte is jazz, blues, and soul. In fact she does do one or two Aretha Franklin songs. She also does Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Amy winehouse, Etta James, Elvis Presley, Frank sinatra, and many more. She also crosses genres easily. I encourage you to learn more and perhaps react to her. The one video that I would start with was when she was 9 years old, and in the studio, performed I've Got a Spell on You by screaming Jay Hawkins. It is the black and white video. This is considered to be the finest vocal performance ever by a 9-year-old, with her skills rivaling those of much older legendary singers. Do yourself a favor and get a copy of NIGHTBIRD. It’s the entire gig of Eva Live at Blues Alley. It’s the greatest album I’ve ever heard and I have thousands of records. The cd is of great quality and the vinyl is beyond sublime. Just otherworldly. You just can’t stop playing it. Pay the price. Any price. Get it!
Eva has the ability to take a pop song and turn it into a heart wrenching ballad. I'm surprised that you haven't heard of her before. Check out her version of Fields Of Gold. You will become a fan just as I am. We lost her way too soon from melanoma. She had so much more to offer to the music community.
