    I can't think of a better female singer. Some have an enviable range, others have perfect pitch. But no one brings out the emotions in me as does Eva.

  • @JohnBare747
    @JohnBare747 2 года назад +3

    Simply the most exceptional female vocalist ever to hijack covers and make them her own, and the voice, and interaction with her guitar again are just beyond description. I love the original but this is so different while the same, that is the Eva Cassidy genius to be able to change her cover to be as only she can do it while never insulting the original. In my go to playlist I have both Cindi's and Eva's back to back and quite enjoy both but after first listening to Cindi's I then hear Eva's invoking some emotions that Cindi's does not. Eva's cover is a celebration of Cindi's work while conveying some deep emotional undertones that never fails to grab me by my insides and wring me out.

      It amazes me when people say they haven’t heard of her. Her music is timeless a her voice is perfect.

    • @jeffstumpf9129

      It was recorded live at a Jazz Club in front of a typical drinking audience at tables. It wasn't so much a concert but a club gig. Because we have so few recordings of her, this was as close to a concert as we will get.

  • @hondarue4758

    I absolutely love her! Discovered her years after she passed, sadly. No comparison to her voice. Rip sweet lady.

    It wasn't just her voice which is incredible. But her arrangements take pop songs to a different level. If only we could have her now.

    • @jeffstumpf9129
      @jeffstumpf9129 2 года назад +3

      Theo, those arrangements are called Jazz. Admit it, you love Jazz. That is the different level.

      @@jeffstumpf9129 - For a great Jazz album by Eva check out The Other Side with Chuck Brown (it might be out of print). And of course I love Jazz. How can anyone love music without at least dipping their toes into Jazz. A few of my favorite albums are My Favorite Things, Monk's Dream, Porgy & Bess (Miles), Double Vision (James & Sanborn) & Giant Steps. And, I've always considered Steely Dan to primarily be a Jazz band. And I love them in spite of their arrogance. On AJA they tried to tell Larry Carlton how to play guitar and Marcus Miller how to play Bass. Thanks for your reply.

      Thanks Ron, I couldn’t agree more. Incredible!

    • @jeffstumpf9129
      @jeffstumpf9129 2 года назад +1

      Yes, but your case would have been stronger if we had more than a few recordings of her amazing voice. Because of that, she hasn’t been on any of the published lists of the greatest female jazz singers of all time. You may know of one, but none have come up in my searches online. The world was cheated of Ave’s great potential by her early death (within months of the release of this album).

    • @ronraskind
      @ronraskind 2 года назад +2

      @@jeffstumpf9129 Jeff I didn't look for any lists or published opinions. This was strictly my take on it. Of course there are lots of great jazz and blues singers. But I would put her in my top five or 10 regardless.

      @@ronraskind, Ava is wonderful in every way except for providing a volume of work. She died before she had a chance. She's on my list, but people don't care about our lists.

    • @ronraskind
      @ronraskind 2 года назад +3

      @@jeffstumpf9129 I think we are pretty much in agreement Jeff. But as I tried to imply, I really don't care about other people's lists. I'm just voicing my opinion and my list. Just as an added fact, I have had quite a few fans of Eva voice a similar opinion. That doesn't make for national or worldwide lists but the impression I've gotten in the past few years is there anyone who has gotten to know her and her work even in the brief time she had, considers her to be one of the best.

    I don't think enough people know about Eva Cassidy which is a shame. Definitely saddened me to learn of her passing.
    Rarely do covers sound better than the original, but similar to how Whitney owns Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You, and with ALL due respect to the legendary and wonderful Cyndi Lauper, Miss Cassidy owns this song.
    Awesome review, Luke. Cheers and aloha

    I thought no one could sing Time After Time better than Cyndi Lauper, then I heard Eva Cassidy sing it and it's so good, I dont want to hear Cyndi's version any more and i wonder if Cyndi actually wants to hear her version any more. This is how good Eva's version is. Sad, full of melancholy and pitch perfect. She is a joy to listen to, no matter what she sings

    Stumbled across Eva a couple of weeks ago by some chance and was completely captivated. Have listened to this live performance of Over the Rainbow, Fields of Gold, Time after Time and, one that gets me even more deeply because of my circs, Autumn Leaves ... Incredible, emotional, superb voice control, especially de-crescendoing from forte to pianissimo .... I wonder if she somehow knew her time was short, even tho, the full diagnosis wasn't till 5 or 6 months after that live performance .... and she passed some 4 months later, sadly. Maybe blokes shouldn't cry, butI do when I hear her somewhat sad songs.

    Superb, I learned about her several years ago. She adds so much more depth and meaning to every song she sings with her re-arrangements. Absolute perfection and a wonderful musician. Can't believe Mick Fleetwood didn't help her, as he heard her numerous times. To me that was a huge mistake.

    • @melodyannherringmcneely7842

      Actually Mick Fleeteood tried to help her. He shared her music with a producer at a recording studio and highly recommended her. She got an appointment but they wanted to figure out exactly what genre she would best fit in & she told the man “I sing the songs i like and i sing all kinds of music.” She wasn’t going to let some record company put her in a box. So she said no thank you. Some of her band mates have said she didn’t realize how good she was as a singer or as a musician!!! She sang this in January of 1993. She was diagnosed with melanoma in June or July & it had come back and was metastatic carcinoma. 😢 She died November 2, 1996 at the age of 33. Gone Way too soon.
