Shame Mavs managment didnt recognize them as two allstars playing together. Instead the narrative was pushed around how Luka has no help and does it all by himself which drove Brunson away IMO similar to Kyrie leaving Cleveland. Everybody remembers that block by Lebron at the end but completely forgots the 3pointer by Kyrie before that. They were 1-2 punch just like Jordan and Scottie. Mavs managment made a huge mistake of not turning Brunson into an allstar along Luka like Bulls made Scottie. They are much better tandem than Luka and Kyrie and the record shows it.

As for Luka's play, I've been very impressed with his defense this year. It was already good at times last year, but now it is noticably better again. If I could point out Luka's weaknesses as a player it was:
    - Not a very high percentage 3 point shooter
    - Inconsistant freethrow shooting
    - Lack of defensive engagement at times
    - Yapping to the refs more than most players
    - Conditioning was a bit shaky at tmes for such a young player
Basically Luka improved on ALL of these points this year, that is hella impressive if you ask me. The conditioning part has been mostly obliterated, as he is playing heavy heavy minutes, with more offensive load and a ton of defense with it. And he is doing all that, while being more productive AND more efficient.
If he wasn't at such a high level already, he could very well classify for MIP the way he has upgraded his game this season. Most of this is effort and a ton of work in the gym, which is what I love about it most.
Luka has been playing like a clear MVP this year, just like he was last year for half of the season. Let's hope he can finally get it!

To add context to why "7 Keep" is funny:
"Give" is a set of dribble hand off plays or DHO plays and the callouts are something like Give 7, Give 1-4 wide, etc.
But because Jalen never passes the ball out of the DHO as JJ and Luka mentioned, Tibs (Knicks Coach) renamed it from Give 7 to Keep 7 and because the other team can hear him call it out loud, it should make it easier to defend the play since it takes out a lot of the variations of the play if they know that he is just going to keep the ball after receiving it from the screener but Jalen still got a layup from it which is also quite funny.

Are we all forgetting that Brunsons dad worked for the Knicks, and NY got a tampering violation from signing Jalen? Some people keep saying "Well you should have just paid him" but until that Jazz series, Jalen was playing at about 10-12 points a game, and was very clearly a backup point guard. That's not worth 14 million. But then dude goes OFF in those playoffs and makes it his mission to play for his dad in NY.
What exactly was Dallas supposed to do? Sign a backup PG to a deal he was clearly not worth, because we should have just known that dude was a 24ppg scorer? Jalen had made his mind up and at the time of his contract extension in Dallas, he asked for more than he was worth at that time.
Also, we got Kyrie Irving out of it, and dude was been playing super well with Luka. I'm more bummed that Jalen wasn't playing like that with us, more than I am in the fact that he left to play for his dad.

Only in the final year of his deal (2022) did he play well - 16-4-4 - and was a playoff contributor (WCF). He's been exceptional in NYC, but never showed his current level of play in Dallas. He is doing outstanding for the Knicks, and the Mavs are also very happy with Luka (34-8-9) & Kyrie (25-5-5).

The only difference right there was Knick had his father working there and also letting him be the no,1 guy . Averaging 22 or 24 doesn’t matter , the fit with the group is what it matters , 2022 Mavs was still not that big in size , imagine brunson also playing with lively and gafford Washington he can do what he’s doing with randle as well. I mean Porzingis didn’t work because allegedly both are immature. Kyrie just needed a front office that shields him from media backlash for the random things he sprouts (thankfully Cuban is an expert when it come to the media business). It worked out well for all. Brunson is in a place where he can shine. Luka gets a co star and a veteran. Kyrie can do and say Kyrie things without the media hounding him.

MVP cause he scored 42 points 😂 Brunson is good but he’s not that good. He takes 20/30 shots a night to get his 25-30 points. The other night he took 31 shots and scored 40 like that’s not a good game. If you’re an nba player taking 30 shots a night you better have 40 points at the end of the night

He wouldn't have unfortunately. Brunson and Luka are ball dominant playmakers but besides their style of play, Luka is the guy on that team. Every play is either fed through Luka or he is a decoy for someone else. To say Brunson would be the same player as he is now means Brunson would be the primary decision maker and ball handler just as much if not more than Luka and that simply isn't the case with Dallas and that offense. Brunson always had the ability to be this great by the way Luka talks about him and even in the example Luka gives about that game in the playoffs, it was Brunson doing that by himself that showed Luka how great he is.

If they traded Brunson they don't make the WCF, but frankly at that time the Mavs still thought they'd be able to sign him anyways.
The problem is that his dad didn't want him to, he wanted him to go to NY... and frankly his dad was probably right. He is thriving there, making good money... but the point is the Mavs didn't get a chance to offer Jalen a contract other than the previous summer, and at that time he hadn't done enough to warrant signing him so early. It made sense for both sides to wait and see, Mavs just didn't realize at the time that they'd not get another chance at him.
I've also heard some people suggest Mavs should have matched the Knicks offer, but they 1) never got a chance and 2) didn't have the cap space to do so anyways.
Mavs would have loved to keep JB. They didn't give him away for nothing, it was just unfortunate how the situation played out, and was largely controlled by his father.

    • @lindigj
      @lindigj 11 месяцев назад

@@him37404 as much as I'd love to have him here, I have to disagree that he lost. Mavs were never going to be able to offer him as much money as NYK could, so the taxes and living costs are probably irrelevant.
More important, though are all of the intangibles. He was not going to get the ball near as much in Dallas next to Luka, and one could argue that he would not have seen as much success as a result. He also is from the area and his dad got to be an assistant coach for the Knicks as a result (which is a huge part of why I think the Mavs never actually had a shot at him).
There's really no doubt in my mind that JB is better off as a Knick. The only thing you could possibly argue really in the future is if the Mavs get a championship before he does in NY, but he may actually have a better shot there for that too (certainly seems that way this year).

how did Luka Brunson and Porzingis not work? I mean I know why but damn, coulda been nasty

They were so young and just gave it up to quick, mark Cuban was just thinking about surrounding luka when he had the guys already

Not really. Porzingis and Luka was said to have butted heads aplenty because both wanted to be the top player of the franchise. So the Mavs have to get rid of one to keep the other happy. They clearly chose Luka. Porzingis did say that they were both immature then.
As for Brunson … who knows if it’s a Mac front office mess up or Knicks tampering…

You can’t be mad the Mavs got nothing for Jalen Brunson….he was a second round pick!!! How many teams get valuable assets for someone drafted in the second round??? Also, Mavs had the opportunity to sign him and they didn’t.

Jokic is a second round pick.

@@KoKoNuTz232 now yes back in 2018 probably not. That wasn’t the precedent set back then and y’all missing the point as a second round pick you probably have 2 guaranteed years on a contract and the rest or team options if that. With Jalen the Mavs knew they had to pay Luka and Jalen’s value is only this high because of the results he is obtaining with the Knicks. Which far surpasses what he was doing with the Mavs and probably what the Mavs thought he could provide. Ultimately the Mavs felt like he wasn’t worth $100Ms and most people felt he should have taken the 4yr $50M deal….dude bet on himself. We have seen this before in pro sports! What y’all fail to recognize is that if Jalen is still in the Mavs no coach is drawing up game winning plays for him over Luka. Kyrie would and will get game winning plays drawn up because Kyrie is a championship player who hits big shots.

Him being a 2nd Rd Pick is irrelevant once you saw what he was able to do in the Playoffs without Luca for a few games.

Brunson's dad is working in the Knick's backoffice, Mavs were never in good position to retain him.
NBA is full of casuals they never even heard of Brunson until he sign for the Knicks and put up good numbers LOL

Brunson, just like Haliburton, would probably not have reached allstar level had they stayed in their former teams.
Their careers needed the change of scenery to be able to reach the next level.
But where Kings made a decent trade, Mavs fumbled the ball. Luka knows it and is why he rolled his eyes when it was brought up.
