How to use the Crop Tool in Photo Mechanic

this is very extensive and easy to understand. I wish the crop tool had a couple additional features, such as keyboard shortcuts to switch between landscape and portrait in the crop tool and an auto align/level the horizon.
I agree with you on the shortcut. I think that the auto align feature is unlikely because that would require some significant understanding of what's in the image. PM is a fast image viewer, not an editor, so it is unlikely to ever get that capability. What I'd prefer is the image rotate rather than the frame, similar to Lightroom.

I'm new to PM but understand Lightroom. Once cropped, how do you get the cropped image into Lightroom or another editor? Do I have to export the image to use the cropped version? Does the "full" icon show the inage as cropped? Thanks.
Sorry I missed this question. When you crop in PM, it carries the crop settings over to LR/PS/C1. Just simply edit with the editor of choice and the crop settings should be carried into your editor. It is a non-destructive crop from PM, so you are not getting rid of any pixels. You can change the crop later in LR/PS/C1 if you choose.

Hi, and first of all thanks for all the time you put in making these videos! I would like to ask, and hopefully you could find the time answering me... I use Capture One (also dpp4, and Lightroom) to develop my pictures, but I prefer doing the crop within PM6. Do you know how to make these programs recognize PM's crop? I see you say its supposed to simply work, but it doesn't for me... PM's crop is totally ignored.. Anything in the settings that I missed? Thanks ahead, and have a wonderful day!
Hi Moshe, I am glad that you find the videos of value. I am a Lightroom user so not an expert with C1. But PM creates an XMP file containing the crop settings that the external editors should be able to read. You might look at Preferences > ITPC/XMP and where is shows When writing ITPC/XMP for JPEG, TIFF, PSD, DNG photos: check Add embedded. Mine is not checked but I am shooting raw. That may help.

Had so much stuff going on, hadn’t the time to get on with this… Anyhow, in the meantime I stopped using C1 (the Canon colors are better with Lr than C1, but still not close to the excellent but unusable DPP4) tried what you said but it doesn’t work yet. I shoot RAW+JPG. Also would be nice to be able to see the edits made in Lightroom show up in PM.

Hi ans thanks for your video. It seems that foe the crop to take place in actuallity, we need to let PM regenerate a new JPG export, right?
Also, for some reason the quality of that export seems to me to be of a lesser quality than other JPG generators (I use DXO). Am I missing something?
I am not sure what you are trying to do regarding exports. PM is a file browser, not an editor. If you crop a raw file, for example, PM creates an XML file that describes the crop. It is non-destructive so no pixels are lost. When you import the image into an external editor such as Lightroom or Photoshop, the editor reads the raw file and XML file. I have never compared the quality of jpgs generated by PM against those created by external editors. I have never noticed any reduction in quality when PM generates the jpg files.

@@jeffvoganphotography what I was trying to do is cropping in PM, and then upload these images to my site from within PM. For that I need PM to generate new JPGs, otherwise it doesn't apply the crop
Question. For MaxPreps they want
The crop to be exactly 3000x2216 pixels . Can you crop inside PM to those specific recommendations ?
I would set a constrained crop in PM to 100 x 73.8667 to get the correct perspective. Then when I export from Lightroom, I'd set the correct crop size. But you may have cropped too small, so I have smart galleries in LR that will show me the images that are too small. I record them larger and they should disappear from that smart gallery.

When you take the image into LR/PS, the crop info (maintained in the XMP file) is retained. When you “save as” make sure the Apply Crop box is checked.

Not that I am aware of. I would typically look to Lightroom to provide that data. I have never thought to look at that information in PM.
@@jeffvoganphotography i found that is actually possible, by entering the sizs variable in info panel. Is not real time, it refresh after the mouse is let go, but it works just fine
Can I export the cropped JPG to Capture One?
Yes when you crop in PM then bring the image into C1, the non-destructive crop is maintained. No pixels are lost and you can change the crop later in C1 if you wish.

Cropped image also brought into LR. It's a non-destructive crop meaning that no pixels are harmed in the process.
