This seems really like the best way. However, I'm still doing the same inefficient process as I have been doing earlier. I use Capture One to import images - Basically, I create a new session, and then import from card - Capture One automatically puts them all in a new folder in the space I assigned to it, and it creates additional blank folders which will be used to save processed images or deleted files, etc. The only reason I haven't switched to your method is because I don't know how to create a new session on Capture One with the photos already ingested this way. I like it, Steve, thanks for sharing all of this detailed info. I'm new to Photo Mechanic and it's a fast way to triage through your shots and also to be sure you never lose an image. I originally was going to save in dated folders based on EXIF capture info, but I've decided to change to the data I ingest. The backup strategy you are using is sound, with multiple local copies and an offsite, too. As a film photographer, we didn't have the luxury of shooting as many images ($$$$), but now with digital and automated in camera exposure and focus, we're capturing many more "keepers", so the work flo must adjust accordingly.

My question is whether I can cull images on the SD card WITHOUT ingesting all the images that I do not like? It seems that first you load the images and then go through them. Is there anyway NOT to load the images onto my external hard drives but just review them before ingest. Thanks in advance. Thumbs up
You can absolutely do that. That's not the way I work as I like to have a backup of everything until I deliver the final images. But you can use PM to cull straight from the card if you prefer.
help. i have 1000s of pics on my pc in photo folders. how do i AUTOmatically add those unique folder names to the photo EXIF after the fact (because i'm upload to google photos and want to create albums based on those folder names)...thank you. (no sidecars....just adding info to the exif)
It‘s really a weird myth that harddrives get slower when they get filled up. That doesn’t make sense, don‘t spread this. Even a large lightroom catalog shouldn’t introduce noticeable performance issues to LR, otherwise it would be a bad programmed software.
My internet is pretty fast yeah, but I think many pro photographers do need fast internet if it's available, Otherwise you just have to leave it running over time.

I love seeing how other workflows. You have me thinking about changing the way I import my photos.
Just my opinion of course but it’s the best system I’ve tried and it’s one I’ve practiced for a long time now.

Thanks Steve! Why did your ingest create an XMP file for each image? Is that the metadata?
Exactly. The metadata includes essential information about the images, such as camera settings, copyright details, keywords, etc

How do you keeep the cards names? Mine always go back to EOS Digital after formatting
That's true for me too. I named them here to help identify them in the tutorial.
