    "44100 adds latency. I don't know why"
    Higher sampling rates mean there is more data available in a shorter time, and the same buffer settings result in a lower latency. 1 sample at 44.1KHz is 1/44100 of a second. So 256 samples at 44.1KHz is 5.8ms. Meanwhile 256 samples at 48KHz is 5.33ms, etc. So 48000 is slightly faster than 44100, and 96000 is twice as fast as than 48000. Your A/D D/A conversion will also supposedly run faster.
    BUT...
    Higher sampling rates also mean more processing by the CPU, which reduces your overall performance capabilities. Additionally, your hard drive space is increased due to the higher quality sampling rate.

    • @beornharris
      @beornharris 7 месяцев назад

      I'm not sure this explanation is exactly right...but I'm too lazy to do the math at the moment. I suspect that 48khz has less latency because it is the native sample rate of the audio interface. At 44.1khz the software needs to transcode, which takes time and processing power. I could be wrong though.

    great Info there! we also use Reaper live, I'll take a closer look at the video stuff which is interesting. For the "which song/part are we at?" thing I use a separate track at the top with empty items that have different colors and numbers as notes (first item always has the song number, then the items reference the part of the song). Also for the "forget to stop reaper before next song", I use SWS extentions that are mentioned below, there you can add markers with a "stop" command, which I have just before every song. So reaper stops automatically before each song when I want it, and then I jump to the next song (I use hotkeys for that, but that footswitch is a great idea, no more laptop touching ;))

    • @vikingguitar
      @vikingguitar  4 года назад

      That SWS extension option is great! I've actually used it before, but I wanted this whole project file (including Reaper install) to be as easy and quick as possible to transfer to another laptop if need be, so I didn't include it. That's a killer idea about the colored items in a separate lane!

    I've used the SWS notes extension for identifying which track is up across the stage where you have with the images. You can dock the notes and set to display marker/region names and then resize so that the text is big enough.

    This was a seriously neat video Erik, and I've wondered how different people handle live guitarwork as soloists! My Twitch setup is VERY similar, but I run a hardware (Fractal AxeFX) amp situation so I switch effects via MIDI pedalboard - it allows me to avoid all the automatic tone switch setups, at the cost of having to setup volumes for all my stuff. I love the visual backing setup as well, seriously crucial for solo musicians keeping an entertaining setup! If I had a question, it would be how would you scale up this kind of setup with a band? Would you be able to preserve any of the setup, or do you opt for amps etc?
    Hope to see you play live more with this setup and see it in action \m/

    • @vikingguitar
      @vikingguitar  4 года назад +1

      Great question! There are a few ways to go about it. It wouldn't be hard to send a separate click track out to the drummer and have everyone play to his time. Alternatively, I could copy all of the tones to a new, blank project with marker points for each tone, and then use my foot switch to navigate between them, similar to doing normal tone switching with a pedal. It wouldn't have quite the ease of use, but would still be easier (and more consistent) than bringing an amp or relying on backline gear.
      Glad you enjoyed the vid, Ro!

    I don't have a band. I record everything myself, and play solo to backing tracks, over the internet.
    I've been using Bias FX to a mixer (to mix with vocals), then into my computer. I wanted to simplify.
    I was just about to download Mainstream when it occurred to me that my existing Reaper install will probably do the trick.
    Since I'm already using guitar VSTs when I record, I might even just be able to use the exact sounds as the recordings.
    Thanks for the setup info -- you made it a lot easier. Great video!

    Hey forgive me if i missed this, but is there a way to send a midi control to the pods tap tempo to sync delays to the project? Thanks!

    • @vikingguitar
      @vikingguitar  4 месяца назад

      Yo! There is a way to do that, but the specific process escapes me since I haven't used the HD500 in a few years. As I recall, it involves using a separate MIDI item that sends a specific CC message to the POD that triggers the tap switch for the BPM. You send three or four signals on the beat and that updates the HD500 tempo. I just looked up the manual for the HD500 and it looks like it's handled by CC 64. Just send three or four signals on that channel with a value above 64 (0 - 63 indicates a binary 0, and 64 - 127 indicates a binary 1.) Line 6 still has the PDF of the manual up on their site, and the MIDI CC list is on page 112 of 119 in the HD500 Advanced Guide. Hope this helps!

    I'm wondering if this new program called "Gig Performer" is better for live use ? Because Reaper is already known for being low latency

    • @vikingguitar
      @vikingguitar  2 года назад +1

      It's a good question! I haven't used Gig Performer, but I'm a big Plugin Alliance fan, so I've seen it on their site. For me, it would take something truly spectacular to replace Reaper. Gig Performer is a more expensive solution, and ultimately does less than Reaper does. However, it very well may be better custom-suited for live work. If you end up trying it out, let me know what your thoughts are!

    Hi Viking Guitar. I would to like to know. How you automate the cc midi effects to your line 6 pod. I have a big problem about this. A use program change to change the banks and cc midi to change effects inside the bank. But Unfortunately everytime when i press "space key" to play the track. The reaper daw send a kind of "midi ghost note" that swich on/off one of my effects. This mess up my system. And i really don´t know how to resolve this.

    • @vikingguitar
      @vikingguitar  3 года назад

      I experienced that with the POD HD 500 also. Honestly, your best bet is to send a program change reset at the beginning of the song (so you know you're starting from a good baseline) and then play through the song from the beginning to make sure everything is setup properly. Trying to replay a part in the middle can get things flipped around. This is one of the reasons I moved away from using the POD with my laptop and now use software amp sims instead.

      I was using the POD HD500 for a long time, and still do in situations where I can't automate patch changes (live band without a click track.) I actually prefer the full laptop solution now since it's WAY easier to travel with and setup. That being said, the POD setup was great and served me well for a long time. :-)

      It depends on how many outputs your interface has. One option is to have your backing track in mono and going out the L channel to the house speakers, and the click in mono on the R channel, which goes to your drummer. If your interface has four outputs and you want your backing tracks in stereo, you can send outputs 1/2 (L/R) to the house, and have the click on 3 and/or 4 to send to the drummer.

      That's an unrelated piece of hardware that I don't have any experience with, so I can't be of much help.
