What Ableton is MOST valuable for, IMO, is the ability to break your songs into sections with midi triggers to launch the specific sections. So you can repeat or skip sections on the fly…making tracks much more flexible.
Can you do this in any other DAW? Maybe Reaper in particular? I’m working remotely with a music team who needs backing tracks and I told them to use Ableton Live but they’re insisting that Reaper does the job.
thanks for your video it's really amazing. for your question about starting the next scene there is an option called ( Follow Action ) and from it you can tell Ableton what to do after finished the clip , it can go to the next or the previous or shuffle.
You can trigger next scene in launch setting of the clip. Just click on the clip to open the clip panel, expand "Launch" (between "Audio" and "Clip") and set a Follow Action (Next in your case). You can select all clip in the scene to apply the setting on all clip at once!

@isaacturnerit oh weird… I haven’t used that one before, but the iConnectivity stuff is supposed to be pretty reliable. So I’m not sure why it would do that. Audio playback is usually pretty simple. Although if it didn’t do it with your Apollo maybe it’s something with the buffer size? That’s the only thing I could think of
Hi Scott, great video. Over the last few years I built something similar in Session view which has a scene for each song and 2 tracks of audio (one mono track with click/cues and one stereo with music parts) plus 5 tracks of MIDI lighting cues that go over IAC to a DMX app. However the MIDI messages for Ableton's scene launch come from a custom webserver running on the same laptop as Ableton and the triggering device is an iPad that runs a custom web app off the webserver. The icing on the cake is that every scene is running at 120BPM but some clip content by necessity features sudden or gradual tempo variations throughout some songs and the lighting cues have to follow the audio. I've been meaning to make a video about it for... years.
Very helpful video! Currently working on getting setup to use Ableton Live for backing tracks, and click, and to also send sync'd MIDI commands to change processor presets .. Thanks again!

Great guide, I am wondering if you can actually make like a midi mapping where you want to play the chorus two times if the gig requires it. Like you finish the chorus once and instead of finishing the track/song, you just press a button and you repeat the chorus
I noticed that you can set a tempo and time signature per clip in 11. Do you use this too? Love the video! Even for an on-and-off user since 2007. Sometimes its good to go back to the basics and re-discover.
Hi Scott, great video, thank you!! I've an issue, may I organize my backing tracks in arrangement view like you show us and at the same time record my guitar and voice during the all live show? How can I do that? Thanks
@@ScottUhlMusic for lighting yes I’ll be playing solo acoustic sets and I wanted to set up my own lighting and have it sync with my backing tracks on Ableton if possible and I’m researching that online how to do that or if it’s even possible
Hi Scott, thanks for your video. I'm learning to use Ableton for backing track with Behringer XAir18. I did not understand why I need a channel out for each stem I want to use. You have 5 stems and you use five out. But why don't you route all the stems to, example, channel 17/18?
Why are some of my tracks out of sync? When I upload them into logic, they are all lined up, but some of them go out of sync when I upload and play on abelton. I've made sure warp is off as well. Any pointers in what is going on?
When you talk about Ableton playing the next scene automatically, I assume this is to play the next song? I've always used arrangement view, which allows you to flow seamlessly between songs.
Yeah, you can do that in arrangement view, but not in session view. Session view is definitely the way to go so you can reorganize setlists and stuff like that for sure, which is why I wish we could do that in session view
Is there a possibility to trigger next song by a drum trigger for example roland kt-10, so i could connect it to audio interface’s input, ant when it gets hit, it starts next song? Thank you for your help :)
So are you no longer just using 2 channels out? Will Ableton allow mono panning tracks/click? Band is a 4-piece with 4 vocals. We have an XR18, and we don't have enough inputs if we use individual channels per stem, especially if we mic the drums.
Hi Scott, I have another question for you. I used to work with Arrangement View as I need to send midi commands to let Helix changes my guitar preset. How it is possible to do the same in session view? Thank you
Do you know how to get the behringer fcb1010 to work in Ableton live 12 ? It shows up on midi devices but when in midi mapping it wont assign nothing 🤔 thanks 😁
Yeah you can, I use ableton live for my tracks, midi, click, lighting, video, and for controlling my in ear monitor mix. I try not to have many plugins on audio tracks in ableton while performing live, but you definitely can 👍
Hi Scott! Great video! I have a question, I’m totally new to ableton, in my band we do live looping with a simple looper, example: I’m recording the guitar chords while we play the chorus and later I use those chords to solo over them. Is there a way to loop the whole backing track so I can extend a certain section to solo over it and then click something to continue the track? Example: intro - verse - chorus - verse - chorus - looped chorus for a solo x2 or whatever is needed - chorus etc Thanks so much
Thanks! I haven’t looped a section of a song in ableton with tracks, but I would imagine just setting each scene for each part of the song would work? Scene for the main part of the song, and then when it gets to the solo it just loops until you trigger the next scene (likely with midi) 👍
Great breakdown and the controller samples look like the 2 ways I was considering triggering these as well: by myself (as guitarist), or by my drummers (pad surface). I don['t have either of those 2 control surfaces yet and am doing research which leads to a question I could use your POV on: Looking at the Akai MPK Mini MK2 for this use and as a controller for QLC+ for DMX lighting. it comes bundled with Ableton Live Light 2 which looked like it supports 8 audio tracks and a bunch of MIDI. Do you feel this might be enough to get me off the ground without having to spend extra for higher cost separate purchase?
@@ScottUhlMusic My sets tend to be 45-60 min so you've raised an important question. I've just dug around a bit and don't seem to have found a reference to anything 30-minute related. Can you elaborate a little on where it applies so I can better locate it to read up and see if it's something I will want to workaround? Many thanks!
Nice. But how would i add midi control and program changes into the session view? I'd love to use session view instead of arrangement view because of the ability to reorder the playlist and the ability to stop after each song. Or would i have to use the arrangement view then? Like: Not only sending out 1 programchange, but multiple during one song
Was playing around some time with _live_ - lots of cool options. Maybe some songs should be good for arrangements on the fly with loops... I don't like all songs to run through their fixed form... just a little jamming ... At least I'm thinking of letting a song play to a certain part, where it enters a loop, like for soloing, and then by footswitch you just exit the loop and play the song to its end.. do you think its possible with Ableton live?
Thanks! And You’ll need to manually setup the click and not use the built in click for ableton. I know there’s a way to automate the click in ableton, but I don’t remember how.
You can click and drag the audio and hit the shortcut (I can’t remember, I think it’s tab?) to switch between session and arrangement and you can drop any audio/midi between the two views
Ok please please please do a an advanced video showcasing your own bands Ableton file. Im super curious on Video integration! (I already do click, tracks, lights and pedalboard program changes). Also in Ableton 11 there is Follow actions which are an easy way of progressing songs without using the IAC driver. Im currently using the IAC system but I hate clouding up my system with extra midi data so Im probably going to switch to follow actions for tempo chances and eventually non-stop blocks of tunes.
Does that work for the master scene? I can do that for each individual track, but not just “change when all the stems are finished.” And for video I use EboSuite, but that’s DEFINITELY overkill for that program haha, it’s just what I got used to using. You need a max for live device for it to work
@@ScottUhlMusic Im happy to report that it works on the master scene! You have to double click on "Master" or the name of the scene to see the "master" follow action. Then you have to program the correct number of measures before it switches to the next one. My eventual goal is to program every song with a follow action like this and then to add scenes that "stop" playback so I can talk a length about the merch booth. 🤣
@@ColinDean1 I tried it, and double clicking the master scene does NOT bring up "master" follow action... is this something just in Ableton 11? Thanks for letting me know. I'm curious why it doesn't show up on my end.
@@ScottUhlMusic Hmmm. Ive definately found it "fiddly" to get to the feature. First I double click on the work "master" (in the top right corner), then I double click on the name of the scene and the "follow action" button should appear in the bottom left corner of Ableton. Hope this helps! Im also Ableton Live 11 Standard Build 11.3.4
What version of Ableton are you using? I think they added scene follow actions to Ableton 11, if you have an earlier version I think the way you do it with a midi loopback is the only way to play next scene automatically.
With Ableton Live in this method, could I just route all my stems to output 1and 2 in stereo so I keep control of my mix and send the cues and clics out 3 and 4? This way front of house wont remix my sends and I can keep control as if it would be a single file, but have the flexibility if the bass player doesn't show up to unmute the bass... Right?
Good tutorial! I don't know of an easy way to auto start the next clip in Session view. However, a lot of people use arrangement view instead and just add all the songs into it one after another. This isn't very good if you have a random order to your songs but it's great for repeating sections of the songs because you can set up a midi automation track that repeats to the previous locator and you can use a midi controller to turn that repeat track on and off as you want to. It's a great setup for things like worship bands that have a small but specific set each week. I wouldn't want to try it with a gigging band that performs like 40 songs a night.
Hey Scott! Thanks for another amazing video. How would Ableton be more beneficial than for example Logic's live loops page? I'm just curious because it seems to me that everything that you showed should be replicable in Logic and I don't wanna pay for the Ableton licence if not necessary 😅 Also are there any benefits from using Ableton instead of Stage Traxx 3? I'm little bit worried of Stage Traxx crashing in the middle of the song on iPad so would rather prefer the Logic/Ableton on laptop but the benefits of syncing with the lyrics and broadcasting it to other members are huge! Also no need to take the laptop with me since I'll have the iPad anyway 😂 I'm just scared the iPad (9th gen) won't handle the tracks reliably. Any feedback would be much appreciated!
I honestly haven’t used the Live Loops in logic, so I’m not sure. And stage Traxx 3 is still what I use when I do covers! It’s an incredible app. I use ST3 for covers and ableton for my ridiculously complicated original music live show 😅
What’s the value of Arrangement view over session view? Some people prefer it. I definitely prefer arranging songs per each scene in session view. Curious why others like arrangement view more?

(Yes, I'm about to watch your long video on how you make your backing tracks. :) )
Both really are fantastic options 👍 I usually make my tracks in logic and then export to st3 for my cover bands personally
Great guide, I am wondering if you can actually make like a midi mapping where you want to play the chorus two times if the gig requires it. Like you finish the chorus once and instead of finishing the track/song, you just press a button and you repeat the chorus
Yeah that would be with different tracks, and you set it to loop, but then send a midi message to disable the loop and go to the next track 👍
I noticed that you can set a tempo and time signature per clip in 11.
Do you use this too?
Love the video!
Even for an on-and-off user since 2007. Sometimes its good to go back to the basics and re-discover.
Thanks! And I usually set that as the master tempo and signature for the session
Hi Scott, great video, thank you!!
I've an issue, may I organize my backing tracks in arrangement view like you show us and at the same time record my guitar and voice during the all live show?
How can I do that?
Thanks
Thanks! And I haven’t done that so I don’t know. I honestly just use session view for ableton tbh
Man I would love to see a review on a dn4816-o box. And a x18/x32 ultra net out to stereo, wireless in ear monitors
That video should be coming out next week 🤘
That’s amazing you’re timeing is perfect. Can’t wait.🤘🏻🤘🏻😝
What is the best LED strip to use to synch to backing tracks in Abelton for a solo acoustic guitar performance?
Like for lighting? The ADJ ones are nice
@@ScottUhlMusic for lighting yes I’ll be playing solo acoustic sets and I wanted to set up my own lighting and have it sync with my backing tracks on Ableton if possible and I’m researching that online how to do that or if it’s even possible
@@ScottUhlMusic ADJ ok thank you
Is there any other options similar as Track Rig? Seems to be only available in the US
Yeah, I believe Behringer makes an audio interface with multiple outputs
Hi Scott, thanks for your video. I'm learning to use Ableton for backing track with Behringer XAir18. I did not understand why I need a channel out for each stem I want to use. You have 5 stems and you use five out. But why don't you route all the stems to, example, channel 17/18?
You can also do it that was as well if you want to combine stems into the mixer 👍
Why are some of my tracks out of sync? When I upload them into logic, they are all lined up, but some of them go out of sync when I upload and play on abelton. I've made sure warp is off as well. Any pointers in what is going on?
Likely the audio is being warped
Hi Scott, I like your video but where I can find the "Edit Lauch Tempo" in windows? I couldn't see it. Please notice me
I don’t have a windows computer so I’m not sure. That’s strange that it’s not just a right click as it is in Mac
thanks! theres a way to start metro 1bar before the scene? in the sesion view It´s possible? because i dont have a click
Yes I believe so 👍 I also make my own metronome so I’m not sure how to do it another way, but I’m sure you can
When you talk about Ableton playing the next scene automatically, I assume this is to play the next song? I've always used arrangement view, which allows you to flow seamlessly between songs.
Yeah, you can do that in arrangement view, but not in session view. Session view is definitely the way to go so you can reorganize setlists and stuff like that for sure, which is why I wish we could do that in session view
Is there a possibility to trigger next song by a drum trigger for example roland kt-10, so i could connect it to audio interface’s input, ant when it gets hit, it starts next song? Thank you for your help :)
Not that I know of, but midi is definitely possible 👍
So are you no longer just using 2 channels out?
Will Ableton allow mono panning tracks/click?
Band is a 4-piece with 4 vocals. We have an XR18, and we don't have enough inputs if we use individual channels per stem, especially if we mic the drums.
With ableton you can do more than 2 channels out for sure 🤘 it’s up to you on what works best. I personally use 4 channels for tracks
Hi Scott, I have another question for you. I used to work with Arrangement View as I need to send midi commands to let Helix changes my guitar preset. How it is possible to do the same in session view? Thank you
Yup! You definitely can. You can copy the data into its own column in session view over from arrangement view 👍
Do you know how to get the behringer fcb1010 to work in Ableton live 12 ? It shows up on midi devices but when in midi mapping it wont assign nothing 🤔 thanks 😁
Make sure it’s configured properly in settings in ableton. I haven’t used the FCB is so long, I can’t remember how to set it up
Can you run your vocals and process them through that same project with the backing tracks? Or same with an instrument like bass or guitar?
Yeah you can, I use ableton live for my tracks, midi, click, lighting, video, and for controlling my in ear monitor mix. I try not to have many plugins on audio tracks in ableton while performing live, but you definitely can 👍
Hey Scott. Does Logic allow for MIDI commands to start the track?
I’m pretty sure, yes. I can’t remember though because I’ve switched to Ableton or Stage Traxx for live now
Example: intro - verse - chorus - verse - chorus - looped chorus for a solo x2 or whatever is needed - chorus etc
Thanks so much
Thanks! I haven’t looped a section of a song in ableton with tracks, but I would imagine just setting each scene for each part of the song would work? Scene for the main part of the song, and then when it gets to the solo it just loops until you trigger the next scene (likely with midi) 👍
@@ScottUhlMusic thanks a lot! I’ll give it a go
Great breakdown and the controller samples look like the 2 ways I was considering triggering these as well: by myself (as guitarist), or by my drummers (pad surface).
Yeah that definitely can get you started for sure! 8 tracks is limited if you do longer than 30min sets, but that definitely will get you started 👍
Many thanks!
follow actions allow you to automatically go to the next song
one question: how can I route the output of the click sound back to the drummers ears using the trackrig?
Yes you should be able to I believe 👍
Nice. But how would i add midi control and program changes into the session view? I'd love to use session view instead of arrangement view because of the ability to reorder the playlist and the ability to stop after each song. Or would i have to use the arrangement view then?
Like: Not only sending out 1 programchange, but multiple during one song
Yeah you have to download a max for live plugin in order to get it to work. It’s definitely annoying. Hopefully they fix that in ableton 12
How can I trigger clip individully without affecting whole scene?please Reply,,,😊
You click the play button on that clip 👍
Was playing around some time with _live_ - lots of cool options. Maybe some songs should be good for arrangements on the fly with loops...
I don't like all songs to run through their fixed form... just a little jamming ...
At least I'm thinking of letting a song play to a certain part, where it enters a loop, like for soloing, and then by footswitch you just exit the loop and play the song to its end.. do you think its possible with Ableton live?
Yup, that will work with ableton!
great as usually Scott, but how to set it up if in one song have a different tempos?
Thanks! And You’ll need to manually setup the click and not use the built in click for ableton. I know there’s a way to automate the click in ableton, but I don’t remember how.
@@ScottUhlMusic great thanks 👌🏻
So for this, is the other view (you press tab) empty? you're working solely off the place you were in the video?
Yup 👍
did you try Follow Action or Dummy clips?
That’s with a newer version of ableton, which I now have 👍
How can i make the music show on the arrangement view just incase I wanted to change things?
You can click and drag the audio and hit the shortcut (I can’t remember, I think it’s tab?) to switch between session and arrangement and you can drop any audio/midi between the two views
Hi Scott, are you using the free version of Ableton? I understand that it is limited to 8 tracks so would it work in your demo?
I have the full Suite version of ableton, but you are correct that the lite version is limited to 8 tracks 👍
Dude if this works! Thank you so much. That might be on ableton 11 only? But I’m going to try here when I get a chance to. Thanks a bunch!!
Im also Ableton Live 11 Standard Build 11.3.4
how do i move my backing track from session view scene to arrangements view
You can tab between the two pages and move files that way 👍
What version of Ableton are you using? I think they added scene follow actions to Ableton 11, if you have an earlier version I think the way you do it with a midi loopback is the only way to play next scene automatically.
I hope 11 has it! I’m on ableton 10
Right?
Yup!
I'm just curious because it seems to me that everything that you showed should be replicable in Logic and I don't wanna pay for the Ableton licence if not necessary 😅
Also are there any benefits from using Ableton instead of Stage Traxx 3?
I use ST3 for covers and ableton for my ridiculously complicated original music live show 😅
Thanks a lot for the honest reply! Did you ever had Stage Traxx crashing on you live with the broadcasting feature turned on?
@@honzakalnik Stage Traxx has never crashed on me, and I've used it live probably over 100 times now. I love it!
What do you display your video on?
Like live video display stuff? On a projector out HDMI from my computer
Is the Standard version (USD 99) able to do all these things?
I believe so, but I can’t confirm
Is there a reason you dont use arrangement view?
What’s the value of Arrangement view over session view? Some people prefer it. I definitely prefer arranging songs per each scene in session view. Curious why others like arrangement view more?
