  • Matt Valliere explains the layout and how he sets up and operates a basic version of the backing tracks when One Time Mountain uses when they play a live show. Includes - routing customization (send and receive tracks to the house or to individual band members in-ear mixes) , marking tracks with names and assigning actions to them, and how to display the Marker so that he can see it no matter what the stage layout is like.

    When you showed the song name in notes my jaw literally hit the floor. This is really cool stuff. Definitely going to be using this when I get my next live setup working.

    The NOTES trick was really cool! Thanks man. Helpful tip: No need for an ! before each action ID in a marker. You only need the first ! and then you only need spaces in between IDs after that. I stack actions in markers all the time, sometimes up to four, though I'm sure it's for all intents and purposes unlimited. Peace.

    Great tutorial! I got this working but one thing that was bugging me was being able to seek to the start of a given region from a midi command. The seek options around regions are a bit limited - i.e. 'Go to region X after current region finishes playing'. For my band, I need to be able to jump to regions on demand - i.e. not following a predetermined set list order. I found that there is better support for this using markers instead of regions. That way, you can just assign 'Go to marker X' and not have to worry about order.
    Incidentally, I'm using a Line 6 Helix which I have hooked up to my laptop running Reaper for backing tracks. The Helix can send midi commands over USB and I have it configured that when I recall a patch for a given song, it instantly sends the corresponding CC command to jump to the marker for that song in Reaper. I also have footswitches assigned to the Play/Pause transport controls, so I can kick off the backing track at the tap of a button - very handy.
    The notes idea is great. Another small tweak I did based on your idea is to put an audible confirmation on a 'cue' channel which only the band can hear i.e. a voice message saying 'Song cued - Design for Life' (or whatever - I used a text to speech program for generating the cues). When I select the patch and jump to the corresponding marker, it starts playing immediately and so plays the verbal confirmation, then hits another marker which has the Pause action assigned to it, leaving it ready for me to hit play on the controller. This way, everyone knows what song is coming next without having to see the laptop screen.

    Just stumbled across thus and I'm gonna give it a go and see if it will suit a slightly complex industrial band (fx triggers on selected tracks etc)

    Excellent. I’m in the middle of creating a rig for a show where I have to play piano while a backing track adds strings as the singer is performing.
    What interface can a MacBook Pro use (as there is only a headphone Jack and a mini USB port) for sending the click track to me and then sending the strings track to the house ?
    I’m new to this but your tutorial was excellent.
    Thanks for it

    I know this is dated, but is there a way to get it to stop playing back the next region automatically? It doesn't in yours but it just goes to the next region and starts immediately

    This was great! The notes addition will be so helpful. Any thoughts on crossfading between markers? Even when I add delay and reverb on the receive bus, when I advance the marker, the output is cleared and starts the next track...any help would be much appreciated!

    Awesome. I may look into going this route to controlling my bands backing tracks and lights. My question is, we do about 50-60 songs a night all using tracks (cover band). Will reaper be able to handle that amount of tracks? would you recommend grouping them into tracks or all having their own separate track line...if that makes sense.
    Thanks!
    Mike

    Nice, our band incorporating backing tracks into our setlist and doing the same. Could you explain further on how you allow you bandmates the ability to adjust their own levels on the launchcontrol device? Are you giving them the ability to set a custom mix of all the instruments. or just an overall vol level of the mix you create for them in reaper. Meaning: do you give the ability to turn up or down individual tracks/instruments in their monitors? I would assume everyone is using in ear monitors as well.

    Hi, I also play drums and I would like to ask for a slightly different approach:
    what setup (both SW and HW) would you recommend for triggering backing-track loops to play along?
    seeing the video, difference should be that for every "region" (be it parts of verse/chorus/break of the song) it should keep looping unless I trigger next one, the launch of next region should match the tempo though! - so how exactly set this up in Reaper?
    and then, what drumstick-friendly MIDI-triggering multi-pad device would you recommend?

    • @OneTimeMountain
      @OneTimeMountain  6 лет назад +1

      I use separate project files for each song. Then I export all of the songs (including the click track) into a master project that contains all of the clicks and samples. So the entire project that I use live is one tempo (technically). I use the rendered clicks, not "Reaper's" click. It's not the most efficient way but it's worked for me.
      I used to use an Alesis Sample pad. The problem is that I used to throw and drop sticks on it and accidentally trigger midi 😱
      Our setup has changed a lot since this video. One day I will make a new one with our current setup 👍

    Do you happen to know how i can set a marker action "go to Region with ID=current Region ID + 1"?
    Eg. Current Region has the ID x and i want to go to the Region with the ID x+1.
    I know there's the function "go to Region 5 eg." but i need it to be independent from what Number the next Region has.
    So im flexible with my Setlists.
    Thanks!

    what kind of interface do you use? I'm using a focusrite scarlett 2i4 and I'm struggling to keep my click from coming out of the front of house send.

    • @everfrostofficial
      @everfrostofficial 7 лет назад +1

      It could be because the master fader is being sent by default to one or all channels of the interface. Reaper's default routing sends all tracks to the master fader (including the track your click would be on), so the click may be coming through this way. If you remove the send on the click track to the master fader this should solve the problem, so all tracks are going straight to the interface individually.
