That's a hell of a tool, thanks for sharing! Just put a fender rhodes VST in a new midi track, randomly click some chords on the chord gun, and ready is a hit ;) Cheers!
All these years I've been manually clicking in notes with virtual keyboard or the mouse... This is about to completely change my work flow for the better... Bless this dude for creating this.
Thank you, Kenny! I've recently bought a few MIDI tools that "sort of" do this, but this looks easier. Reaper has so many more things it can do than most of us know! Thanks for the tutorials!
I still like UChord (I'd like to accumulate a chord progression before committing it to the piano roll), but Captain's out of a job. I'd love to have some kind of 'chord object' in the actual Reaper piano roll, where you could e.g. select a chord and have some kind of action to invert them and other manipulations.
@@BillGraper Yes, I have InstaChord and all of the other "Insta..." related vst's. Haven't used them much, though... too many plugins - too little time!
Every Single day the more tutorials am completing for REAPER am loving it more and more. I don't know If there is any other DAW in this world has such capabilities and community along with a INSANELY GREAT TEACHER like KENNY. Kudos to REAPER team and I don't have words to explain my excitement and love for the DAW that is increasing day by day. Still in evaluating mode but rest assured once I finish all the videos from REAPER website am going to instantly buy this DAW, no questions asked.
CG seems to be working. But it won't 'print' the MIDI info if I'm not actually recording. I can't print without Reaper 'rolling'. I can't figure out what I have or haven't selected properly.
This is great - thanks Kenny. I just bought EZKeys 2. I’m wondering if I dragged and dropped an arpeggiated progression into a track with chord gun, I could edit it with chord gun to get the new chords to play in the arpeggiated midi pattern.
The chord gun might be a shortcut but is also a wealth of learning info when it comes to musical theory and what scale associates with a specific chord groujp etc.
I think a few of the steps in the beginning are unnecessary, I downloaded the plugin into a folder I created called Reaper-Stash and directly installed it from there rather than copying it to the scripts directory/folder.
This script is brilliant, but so is the video explaining how to use it! Thank you so much for the tip on such a great addition to Reaper AND showing how to use it!
Oh my god! Just a treasure trove of information. Really glad I chose reaper as my DAW because the software and your channel are awesome! I'm learning so much so fast, and have TONS of tools to get me going. Thanks so much!
This is so awesome but I can't get my virtual keyboard to make any sound unless I apply a plugin to it, is that normal? I just want the default piano keys. This happens even if I start from scratch like this: 1. create new track 2. arm recording 3. change input to MIDI: virtual keyboard > all channels 4. open virtual keyboard, play some keys, no sound whatsoever Help please!
yes, this generates the midi but it needs a instrument plugin to create sounds. setup a track template based on how you want it to be so you can easily add them, there are scripts to add track templates with 1 click as well.
I am trying to change my own midi melodies into chords, just like kenny did at 11:17. But if I try that, the chords always have the length of the grid I am using, and I have not found a way that the chords have the length of the already existing notes. Anybody knows what to do? :)
Kudos to pandabot (Ben Johnson) for creating this incredibly useful tool. I've played around with this, but I didn't know about playing it in real-time or selecting existing events and replacing chords.
Or, one could simply put the cursor on a note, right click and go down to "insert chords" and get a much more extensive list of chords to use than Chord Gun offers. Like a "mMaj7add13" or a "13b5b9" chord.
Kenny it is working fine when i do shift+click but makes no noise when i simply click on the buttions in the chord gun. is there any reason why this is happening?
You have to do a few things first. (1) Set up a virtual instrument on the track. Hit some notes on its internal virtual keyboard to make sure it's working. (2) Arm the track for RECORD. I don't think Kenny mentions this, but no MIDI input works without it (at least as my system is configured). (3) Set up the track's MIDI input to the virtual MIDI keyboard or to ALL.
Oof. Finally. I'vve been looking for way too long for something clearly essential. Seriously, how come no DAW have this by default? Anyway. Is there a way to launch the script automatically?
Super duper good lesson Kenny, just wondering is there a script or a js plugin that can do something like the Scaler plugin, what I mean is a plugin that restricts my midi keyboard entered chords to a pre defined scale/key?

Hello. I need your help. I want to create a backing track for pharaon (gipsy kings) and I am confused. I don't know how to use chord in reaper. I would be so grateful if you provide me with some useful tips/tricks to solve the problem. Thanks in advance.
Ooh God.!! I had no idea this was possible .... I am an amateur user trying to record a demo ...... this has been super useful to help me with the musical block ....... thank you very much for this information Kenny .......amazing Broo.....Regards from Spain. !!! 👏🤘💪
Just downloaded it, when I go to the scripts folder it's not there. And It opens up a windows folder, not a window within reaper like in this video. It's nowhere to be found. If I try to open the folder that I've just downloaded from my Downloads, it asks how I want to open this file with no options but to look for an app. Please help.
I accidently clicked something, and now it wont play the first measure of my progression...the chord is all filled out just like the other bars but it won't play for some reason. I even deleted the project and tried again, and it's just silent for the first measure.
Incredibly useful tool. Pandabot is the man! Didn't know this kind of tool was just a few clicks away :) I was always looking for something like this without having to buy a pricy VST. It's so useful to come up with some basic chord progressions (even if you use other notes later on. Or to set up a progression to practice musical instruments to. Impressive that it also is so well integrated with the MIDI editors, so that it replaces existing chords, preserves the rhythm and so on. I also love that it works with arpeggiators which follow in the FX lane, such as MIDI arpeggiator (see an other video by Kenny Gioia).
Thanks for a very clear and in informative video on this great tool, and thumbs up to pandabot Ben Johnson as well for creating it . My question, I did install ChordGun via Reapack but I noted in your video point to the straight procedure from resource origin and then Reaper load up, does that make some difference in installation results?
Thanks so much for your awesome tutorials, Kenny. I think I've watched nearly all of them. Great help finding my way around Reaper. This again: wonderful and very useful! 🙏
Wow, this looks a really useful tool - fantastic work, gonna give it a try and happily donate some money if it works well. Thanks for highlighting this Kenny! Is there any way of getting those chords to appear at the top of the timeline as per Cubase/Studio One do you know?
hi Kenny thanks for the video, when I right click it erases the note, can't figure out how to bring up my options to add chords I know it's in my actions but I couldn't search for right click. sorry very new at 27 days now
Hey, if still stuck, select Actions > Show action list. In the filter type pandabot. Find Script:pandabot_chordgun.lua, double click it. You can bind it to a key if you select the same .lua file and choose key map button. Kenny rocks!
The gentleman that wrote this script deserves some donations. And Kenny deserves some for being the best Reaper teacher on RUclips..
Deeply agree.
Yeah like the most boring guy in the wild west
I wonder if Kenny ever gets tired of hearing how awesome he is.... Kenny you're awesome
... and as a bonus, you’ll even learn a little music theory! 😉 Great script. Great tutorial! 👍
That's it, throwing away the midi controller😂
No😭
The open nature of Reaper makes it better for me every day.
Thank you Kenny and the script creator.

How did you get the docker to split top and bottom on the right side? Also, do you know if there is a way to rescale the size of the Chord Gun?
Thank you panda bot :((((((((
Another gem! Thanks Kenny and thanks Ben Johnson (pandabot)!

Wow. Thanks for this. And the guy who made the script, thanks
Just when I've created my own menu items for a bunch of chord types I now stumble across this tutorial! This is a godsend of a script and video.
This video is probably the best video for bedroom players like me. :)
I feel bad for those doods that bought all them midi chord packs xD
This is genius!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
With this , ther is no need of a midi chord pack , thanks for the video.
thanks a lot sir! your explanation is so easy to understand 👍🙏

download the new version
Am I dreaming or is it the first time your promote non native features ?! awesome !
At 9:51, the midi editor grid changed from quarters to sixteenth - did this happen somehow automatically?
Kudos to pandabot (Ben Johnson) for creating this incredibly useful tool. I've played around with this, but I didn't know about playing it in real-time or selecting existing events and replacing chords.
How to David Guetta Tutorial.
And how to add your custom chords to this script?
Thanks Kenny, this is way easier than the «stick to a key» button and paint chords in piano roll
Or, one could simply put the cursor on a note, right click and go down to "insert chords" and get a much more extensive list of chords to use than Chord Gun offers. Like a "mMaj7add13" or a "13b5b9" chord.

Just installed the chord gun mate ... I love that script ... it will help me a lot with my composing work flow ...
Thanks very helpful tool
I went to the download link clicked on download and that took to the app store and there's nothing there. So I'm guessing that doesn't work on mac
He's using a mac, download from the Reaper stash, not app store.
As a Reaper Newbee from Germany I found this by accident. Thank you so much, this is exactly what I was looking for.
awesome! i know chord theory well, but i still like to use tools like this, they make me think/comppose differently than actually playing chords.
Thank you so much i need this!
Unbelievable script, Kenny you’re the man and this community is just awesome!
Thanks 🙏 now we have Captain Chords in Reaper 🤓

Anyone else that gets no sound when clicking on the notes? Any solutions?

the first progression sounded like 'Take on me!' 😜 Great demo, thanks, and God bless! 🙂🙏🏻❤
Let it Be known that this is one of the most used chord progressions in popular music. Don't Stop Believin what I just wrote.

Hi Kenny... can we use a midi keyboard with this... or map it to pads... thanks
What did you do at 13'05"; when you clicked on the C chord, and the IV and V chords changed to Fsus2 and Gsus4?
Ooops. That was actually just a bad edit.
It is a shame that this does only work on MIDI Channel 1, it will not work for any other tracks that I have tried to focus/use it.
