I came - like so many others, too - from another DAW to Reaper (in my case Samplitude). At first I was a bit confused at the crude and old-fashioned style and layout of the midi editor. But boy: once you discover the features Reaper has to offer, it's like unlocking the gift that keeps on giving! I cannot think of any reason why I would EVER need another DAW!
People immediately put down on Reaper's midi editor for it being unusual at the default state but man it has so many cool and advanced features hidden than most daws don't have or they've recently added. Like despite being the best in the industry for midi Cubase didn't have that select "select all notes in time selection" feature and they recently added it. Please make more Reaper midi tutorials. It's IMO one of the most hidden, underrated mysterious part of Reaper that's waiting to be explored like a treasure island.
Agreed hands-down. I'm shocked to see where I came from (Reason DAW) and how after 15 years they're still implementing some basics that Reaper has allowed as options.
"select all notes in time selection" is a really useful option in reaper, i turned it into a button. i use that along with "select all CC events under selected notes" I also made the move midi notes options to my number pad arrows + shift . so i can just select midi and move them around by whatever the grid is set at using these hotkeys. it's so much better. The less I have to grab the mouse, the better the workflow for me anyway. I use a lot of step input and quantize-in option for when i am playing something on the keyboard.
I for soooome for some reason try to do all my midi with my mouse and avoid the keyboard as much as possible. But the toolbar can only fit so many icons I always run out :( so I try to just use the left side of my keyboard for shortcuts but there's so many! It's definitely a workflow I'd love to polish up more.

I’m starting to accumulate as many daws as plugins. Have been working with Logic 10 and mostly studio 1, just got cubase 13 pro, and I’m still getting reaper. I’ve seen so many comments on reaper while watching videos about other daws. A lot of folks recommend it highly. I just never thought of watching reaper videos until today. Thank you, I’m sold. Is there any video of yours that teaches how to place the whole notes, half notes, and quarter notes on the top part of the MIDI editor like it is in your track?
I don't, but it's very simple! 👍 Right click the MIDI editor toolbar and press "Customize toolbar". Click on "Add..." the actions menu will show up. In the actions menu search for "Grid: set to" and you can select the ones you want. Then you can add icons to them and reorder with the custom toolbar window.
