The surface black screen problem usually occurs when a Windows update is being installed, but the surface runs out of battery power and powers off during the update. Follow the steps in the video to get your Surface device working again. This fix applies to all Microsoft Surface devices and not just the Microsoft Surface Pro. Hi...I tried this with my 5th Gen but it doesn't seem to work. The site gave me 5 options to download...I chose the latest version but unlike yours it took over an hour to download and had 263 files. This is a well kept device...can you suggest anything else as Microsoft didn't even look at it...just offered to part exchange, with me paying £500.00 for a replacement!

Ended up retiring my Surface 2 because i couldn't use it since 2016, suddenly after an update. I tried everything (i thought) but Microsoft's instructions were just too unclear to me.. Gave it another shot and to all my surprise it works! Thanks man!!!

Awesome this helped me BIG TIME. Just from my experience I had to try different combinations with the volume up and down, while holding the power button. Wasn't exactly how you had mentioned, but I kept trying and got the right combination that worked. I suggest to others try a couple different combinations when rebooting. Thanks

Hey so i was watching this video to the end for Surface Pro 7, and I didn’t even think about holding down the Volume Up + Power button. I didn’t even need the flash drive! Either way, u did help me, so thanks 👍🏾

My wifes surface pro got stuck in repair mode, tried all so called fixes and nothing worked. Told her that I think it was done. It took my 3 hours to do this, it works tho, it would’ve been faster, the files vary depending on series number I’m assuming because I had way more files to download than he did, but it does work, thank you sm

In the video at 4:22 I mean to say press and hold down the volume-down button and then press the power button. On the Surface Pro's there is a button for volume up and a button for volume down.
Hello so I have a surface pro 4 and I tried using it the day before yesterday and it recognized my face but the brightness was way below 0% and for some reason holding a flashlight towards it helps me see it a bit but I checked the settings and the brightness is suppose to be all the way up I tried the power buttons 30 secs and the power button with the volume up button and nothing it restarts and turns on or whatever but I still cant see the screen unless I'm flashing a light at it. Help!
I let it run out of battery too and when I recharged it the same thing happened
It sounds like your surface pro screen has gone bad. I recommend that you get this adapter (amzn.to/2MWshFX) to connect your Surface Pro to your TV so that you can at least use your Surface Pro and back up your files etc. After that, you may want to call Microsoft technical support to see if there is anything they can do for you, often times they will sell you a refurbished unit at a low cost if you trade in your non-working Surface Pro. Before you do this I recommend you back up your files though.
I thought all was lost today and just tried this....OMG worked like a charm. Fortuntely I saw yours first but then after fixing this googled this issue further and a lot of people say to hold the volume up button, but the volume down worked like a charm for me. It took me two holds of the power and volume down button using the mississippi counting method to 10 the first time and then on the second hold it came right up. Thank you!
None of this helped but I did leave my surface pro charging over night (after it being off for almost a year) then it boot it up again. Just wanted to share for some that might also have the same problem.
I want to share my experience with surface book 2. When i started my laptop it was on but it was showing black screen. Then i saw some video s and i tried one thing and it worked. I pushed power button and volume down button for 20 sec. Or 30 sec. And the display started working agian. I hope it will work for you too. Best of luck
My Surface Pro 2 still won't turn on. Please help! I've charged my Surface Pro 2 and tried all the tricks mentioned here and elsewhere including holding down the combination of vol+power buttons.

Ok so my SP3 screen went black too and is not fixed to date...... I have it docked and three additional monitors hooked up. They work on startup but the surface pro screen does not. If I shine a flashlight on screen on angle I can see the surface screen in the black area but seems like screen light is not working. Please help

So my Microsoft surface pro was working fine but I think just had too many things plugged into it and the battery USB box as well and within an hour it turned off and 3 days later it doesn't want to turn on I kept it unplugged from everything at first and a day later I left it charging because I was hoping it was the charger itself that broke and I just didn't see that it died but when I moved the charger to a different plug it did light up for a second and it turned off again is it possible that I just fried my laptop because of everything I had it plugged into. Also it was warm but it wasn't heating up to the point where I should be worried for its life

my surface is stuck on trusted platform module enabled and secure boot control enabled and 3 other options. I did what you did, but my surface shows "Surface" and the ring keeps spinning. Nothing happens. Are there any specific settings that need to be done before resetting it ?

I know this is year old vid but I happen to have 2 surface pro that I got for my kids and both are not responding they forgot to charge it and a week later they come to me saying that it won't start I am having the issue where it is not starting any image or anything other than the charger cable it lid on when I plug to table both are doing the same. what should I do ? I called manufacture and I was told in a lot of world that its paper weight . I am not happy with that because they are no cheap to start and in less than a year I am having that issue and of course I did not buy warranty so here I am trying to fix this issue. if there is nothing to do would it be better to replace the battery?
Hello, could you please help me? My Surface came with the bad USB port. I had a problem with Windows, the boot stopped. I took the HD and reinstalled the System but when it turns on it just falls into the BIOS. Any suggestion? Thanks.
well it turns on it just goes into a black screen mine just doesnt turn on at all only the light at the charging cable does light up when connected. Does anyone know a fix because just replacing the motherboard batterie isnt possible when i am right. Really need help

what if the surface start up screen does not come on buu the keyboard back light comes on? i am really stuck.. any ideas?
One other user commented that they just had to charge their laptop in order for it to come on. Maybe try charging it overnight to see if that helps. If that doesn't work try the method I described by holding down those buttons (I had to try a few times before it worked for me). Other than that the unit maybe dead and hopefully you still have warranty and you can contact Microsoft for warranty repair.
Hey Malcolm Peters, were you able to fix the problem with your surface pro? I am having the same issue, only the backlight of the keyboard turns on. Please advise if you found a solution or took it somewhere to get it fixed.

This fix should work for Surface RT as well. Were you able to boot off of the bootable USB flash drive you created at all?
No, the boot off didn´t work. the screen switches from the Surface logo to the surface logo( with the automatic repair^). But the repair dosen´t happen :(
Don't do the automatic repair, follow the steps in the video.
ZadiusTech i can’t contrôle it. It switches automaticly. It freezes on the surface logo.
Keep trying to boot off the USB flash drive by pressing and hold down the volume-down button and then press the power button. It may take several tries.
What if the surface logo doesn’t come on altogether and it doesn’t switch on? I have a surface pro three, the charger glows when it’s plugged in but the surface itself won’t switch on at all, and it hasn’t been dropped??

Mine do not shown any white labels on the boot. Just black screen and that is all. Do not start at all.
Try charging it overnight to see if that helps. Someone on here commented that is how they fixed theirs that had similar problem to yours.

Follow the instructions in the video to load the recovery image onto a USB drive and then restore your Surface 3 using the USB drive.

All you need to fix your tablet is the tablet itself and a USB flash drive that is at least 16GB in size. To fix your issue please skip to 00:35 in the video and follow my instructions step-by-step. Queen Youli, I checked and the fix does work for your Surface RT! When I say hold down the volume button and then press the power button in the video, I mean to say press and hold down the volume-DOWN button and then press the power button.

Bro WTF? I literally had to bend my Surface Pro 3 backwards from the center and from the top until I heard it snap. Only then did the damn thing actually start up. 3 months of black screen. 3 months of Holding power and volume down for 30 seconds, nothing.... Instead, the thing that starts it up is me getting upset and trying to break it. There is some type of structure integrity issue with the 3.
Yes I have to bend and abuse it for hours to restart it but from sleep mode its ok

shouldn't take longer than a few minutes.
Just do CPR on the device.. like real CPR .. lay the device on its face and CPR done !!!

Yes, this fix also works with the surface 3.
My surface 3 wouldn't restart either.
I held down the power on button and volume button at the same time, until the computer came back to life. It took awhile. Then I switched it off again, turned it on again, and has worked ever since.
@@moirabunce4200 define "awhile". like several seconds? minutes. mine powers on but no surface logo at all. i've tried all of this.

woke up one day to it being off.
Plugged in to Microsoft charger and the little white light
is on at the top of the connector on the tablet.
When pressing the power button the SURFACE logo comes on for
exactly 5 seconds then screen goes black and the tablet is powered off.
Have already tried the POWER + VOLUME UP method without
success...table still powers on for 5 seconds then shuts off...does not go to blue screen.

i want to share with you a unique a rare and unique case which you can take'it as a chalange: using a Microsft Surface Probook since new and from the begining were problems even with the phisical keyboard or usb , simple not working. Each time after a factory reset always started to work perfect. All this till one day when navigating the surface got stuck. I turned off and from that moment (1 years ago) till present i can not acces my laptop because is impossible to type the laptop password as :
- phisical keyboard is not working
- the touch screen keyboard is not showing up
- the other option "on screeen keyboard" when you touch'it everything becames blocked and need to re-start.
Also note that:
- USB is not working and i can not reset the windows
- the only way when i can type something is in the BIOS "the security question" using the touch keyboard.
I tryed to reset'i using the power and volume (more than 100 times) and is not working.
Anyone have any ideea ? Solution ?
