      - I didn't have a spare 0-ohm resistor so I made a solder blob to bridge the contacts. Works like a champ!
      - I suspect the root cause for these 0-ohm resistors failing is elsewhere - so without a 0-ohm basically acting as a tiny fuse, what will blow up next? I think it is prudent to limit turbo boost with Intel XTU or Throttlestop on any of the machines with these symptoms to prevent the CPU from going into high-current mode.
      - BTW I love the trick of wedging up the mainboard with a spudger to free the battery contact without having to remove the whole board
      - Note: T5, T4, and T3 torx are needed to work on these things.

Also to report that this fixed my problem! SP4 wouldn't Turn On but noticed that backlight for keyboard was turning on. Luckily had replaced battery earlier this year and was easy to open. My resistor did not show any signs of burn but could see a voltage drop. Just did a little solder jump to test and everything works as usual!! Will later try to install properly the zero Ohm res. w/ proper equipment. Thank you for your video!

Also, what is the glue stuff you are putting on the board when doing the soldering? This will be my first time doing this type of repair so I want to make sure that I have all the right tools.

Great video. I just replaced the batteries on (2) Surface Pro 4. First problem: I did not have the ribbon for the battery on the pin below the motherboard (video I had watched did not mention it) so it was not properly aligned and showed "no battery" when I tested them after installation. Both worked fine connected to power. Second and current problem that I cannot figure out: I re-positioned the ribbon from the battery on both units so it was on the pin and lined up correctly. Now, both units will not start on battery or connected to power. The light on the charger is continually on for about 3 seconds, then very quickly blinks of for split second, then on again for about 3 seconds. I do not see any burnt components, as in your video.

Update: I put a thin piece of plastic between the battery and contacts on 1 to see if it would boot, but it did not. I was reading another post and it said that if the prongs on the motherboard touch the wrong contacts for the battery, the motherboard could be fried. If that happened, what should I look for? If not this, then any suggestions? Whatever I did wrong, happened to 2 of these.

There is not a cut a dried answer. First close visual inspection under microscope is recommended. If everything looks perfect then probe around using a multimeter following the circuit for faults. Among other things bad caps, resistors, and even transistor is possible. Short to ground is a dead giveaway but finding the culprit takes investigation and patience.

Hey John, Thanks for this and all the informative videos. Question: Was this device not powering up or just not powering the display? I have (and have seen) Surfaces that behave like this one but when a keyboard is attached there is power to it.
I'm about to dig into a SP4 that has power but no display. I'll let you know if the same resistor is the issue.
This could answer a lot of questions people have been asking about Surfaces for years.

    • @FixItPlanet1

Power may still reach some areas of the logic board depending on what failed. No power just means the tablet is not turning on. Maybe the CPU is not getting power for example so the tablet does not turn on and certainly no video will appear on the screen.

I noticed quite a few test pads on the boards which seem fairly common over the entire range. • @XNLFutureTechnologies
      @XNLFutureTechnologies 4 года назад

When being less experienced it's actually better to just replace the power brick as a whole. Most common failure in power bricks are the capacitors (often due to the high temperatures produced by the power bricks), however it doesn't sound like it considering you've mentioned the crackling.
Even when buying an 'third party brand' replacement (a QUALITY one though! not some cheap 10$ Chinese imitation!), you are often much better off and still have higher stability assurance than when attempting to repair it yourself.
What's even more important if you're less experienced when working on things like power bricks: They 'convert' the high voltage AC from your wall outlet to regulated DC (12V) for your tablet. These circuits are considerably dangerous to "tinker with" if you have less experience.
The replacement power bricks (third party) can often be found on the internet for about $20-$30. I'm actually someone who professionally works on electronics daily and I just bought a new one (also third party for €23) for my Surface Pro 2 (as secondary power adapter for at the office), works fine and even runs less hot than the original one by Microsoft.
      Hope this helped/informed you a bit :)

Some of the information in this video describes where to look. The tablets are arranged differently but use similar configurations of the chipsets. Look for something that identifies the area where we replaced the resistor (near the CPU area) and see if anything looks suspicious. Otherwise you will have to use a multimeter to measure around for a fault. Share what you find out and good luck.

My SP4 charger will not show the white LED charge light. First attempt less than 48 hours after normal use and proper charging.
    It just won't turn on.
Tried three chargers and none will show the white LED charge light when connected to the SP4.

i want to share with you a unique a rare and unique case which you can take'it as a chalange: using a Microsft Surface Probook since new and from the begining were problems even with the phisical keyboard or usb , simple not working. Each time after a factory reset always started to work perfect. All this till one day when navigating the surface got stuck. I turned off and from that moment (1 years ago) till present i can not acces my laptop because is impossible to type the laptop password as :
    - phisical keyboard is not working
    - the touch screen keyboard is not showing up
    - the other option "on screeen keyboard" when you touch'it everything becames blocked and need to re-start.
    Also note that:
    - USB is not working and i can not reset the windows
    - the only way when i can type something is in the BIOS "the security question" using the touch keyboard.
I tryed to reset'i using the power and volume (more than 100 times) and is not working.
Anyone have any ideea ? Solution ?

I understand you don have a crystal ball but I'm hoping you can help, nothing on screen but keyboard lights up if you turn it on, if the power resistor is bad would it allow keyboard to turn on. I do not want to tear into this thing and risk doing extra damage unless I have an exact component if possible. Also what type of heat tool are you using.

Some failures are common. Some probing around with a multi meter can help you locate the failure. In this case the blown resistor was obvious. I have some working boards I can use to reference measurements. I compare a known good board with a bad board.

After watching countless repairs by Louis Rossman I can recognize a fatal error in the repairing process.
The resistor blew for a reason and it's not enough to just remove the old one, slap a new one and you're good to go..
If you don't investigate the whole rail to get to why it blew you're gonna blow it again or have a bigger problem especially that this resistor is near the processor.

    • @FixItPlanet1
      @FixItPlanet1  3 года назад +2

Each person needs to decide what is relevant to the problem they are trying to solve.
You share what you find with everyone after you have figured it all out.
That resistor acts just like a fuse and lots of things can cause it to blow.
There is nothing "fatal" about this repair. This exact tablet still works to this day and no one has died as a result of this repair.
There is definitely more than one reason why something fails. It is always important to understand what you are doing and each person should do what they think is best. We are just sharing for others as we have time what we discover along the way.

i can confirm, that i exchange this 000 Resistor twice and each time it hold some months at customer, after it burns up. As you write, there is something else with CPU circuit, that let it take more current, so this resistors are blowing. Maybe it is the cpu.. but i'm not sure.
