I bought a Mal that was dropped from patrol dog school due to her nose being desensitized from exposure to anhydrous ammonia during training. She already did her bite training it occurred during drug portion. I bought her from a police department when she was 13 months old under the stipulation I’d never breed her and sell her pups. She’s 7 now, she’s the best dog I could have ever imagined. Smarter than some humans I know. Very good with my children and protective of them. Loyal and obedient like you could never image. The first few years I didn’t know what I got myself into just because they are so hyper and need so much stimulation but it was fun. But as she has aged and I think she thinks she took on the roll of nurse mom to my kids she has calmed down and I couldn’t ask for a better dog. She means the world to our family.

I had to show her who the alpha was but after that she just wants to please and be with us. Once the kids came she took to them like they were her own. I’m sorry for your loss. I had a Jack Russell for almost 16 years. I got her when I was 8 and she passed away when I was 25 and it dam near killed me. She was my best friend. We were working a check point on base searching vehicles for explosive. This one time we had bomb dog present with handler right by me so the dog was watching me interact with driver. I told the dude get out but he was being confrontational. Eventuality he complied. I ordered him to stand on the side walk he did until I lifted up the seat and he stepped of the side walk and came towards me. Immediately the dog went after him. Lucky for him dog was on leash, this dog would have turned him into meat. Later on the handler told me that bomb dogs are different because aside from obedience they are also train to act alone or when we are injured or I'm un able to command especially when things get chaotic and confusing which makes them extra viscous. Situation awareness. This dog was smart enough to know this driver disobeyed my order. Without command this dog let everyone one know this guy is doing something wrong. I’m lucky to have had the opportunity to adopt the dog who was always beside me throughout multiple missions and has saved countless lives including my own. I was being approached and encroached on by an over 6 ft male. His creepy girlfriend already moved to the back seat. They were both laughing inappropriately and he kept encroaching. Intense immediately. Never lost sight of his target. He then threw a block in front of me never losing sight of his opponent. The guy then started walking backwards until he got to his creepy car . She now was back in the front seat. I went and got my money with epic right beside me. The creepy ppl started over and kept circling the bank as we left. I should have called the police. Mals are another level. My family used to raise Military/Police Sheps and every now and then we would be lucky enough to get a baby mal to raise. They always made the other sheps look so inferior in every way. We had a mal who would break out of his kennel by climbing out of it, it was at least 15 feet high with metal fencing. We had a pseudo pet deer at time, her mom left her in a bush in out backyard and she just stayed around and grew close to the family. The mal and this deer would run amok around the farm. The mal wanted to catch the deer so bad, but never could. The deer would hop along a fence from one side to the other while the mal tried to weave between back and fourth. The mal would jump off the fence, over the fence, would launch himself off tree stumps to catch this deer. He never could. When he got to real training he excelled. I always said it was because of that damn deer that dog was so good. He served a wonderful life as a police dog in GA and had a very good career.

As long as they are not fucked up. My neighbour at my last house had a belgian (mechelse) shepard "guard" his tiny back yard, because of his uninsured motorbikes. That thing was crazy af. It would snap at me when walking by in the main street, luckily she was always on a short leash. I could not use my own back yard due to the noise that thing made and because she would jump against the hard wooden 2.5 meter high fence to intimidate me barking armageddon. When other neighbours started complaining some police officers came by, including a k9 trainer, they looked over my fence to see if the dog was ok or whatever, the dogs started going crazy again. The k9 trainer just did a loud sharp short hissing sound TSSHH !! and the dog just stfu with it's tail between its legs, crying like a puppy. It was crazy. Afterwards I overheard the adult son of my neighbour discuss the crazy dog with him "that's why she was so cheap dad, this dog is not ok, just like the last one you got". His wife was feeding the dog by throwing food out of the 2nd floor bedroom window onto the backyard because she didn't dare to enter outside.

We have German Shepherds and they need strict training, the Malinois are at another level and no one should get one without understanding that they will need a professional trainer for this breed. They’re incredibly intelligent and intense. I worked in the prison system and some of the K9s were Mals. They really are amazing. Having a German shepherd is enough of a commitment for us. When your puppy is as smart as you it can be exhausting. With these kinds of dogs they have to have a purpose, a job to do. If you don’t give them one they’ll make up their own and you might not like it very much. 😂

I’ve had 2 Mali gators in my career. Both were drugs/patrol. Patrol meant the dogs would track/protect/and attack. I love Malinois! They are one of the best dogs for law enforcement because they’re sooo smart, fierce, protective, and fast. Their bite is ferocious, and they will never give up. They can be great family dogs, but not for a novice dog owner. They have gotten so popular because they’re always on cop shows, and that can be a bad thing. A good friend runs a local shelter, and a week doesn’t go buy that another Mali is brought in. It hurts my heart.
