Last year I was given a few logs of Wild Cherry. I could see that the grain would be interesting as it had a dark red heart and creamy sapwood. I decided to leave this log to dry until I could figure out what I wanted to do with it. As I am now in a bit of a live edge bowl phase I decided to make my biggest one yet. The piece has been sanded to 1500 grit, and 5 coats of Danish oil have been applied. I am really happy with the result and absolutely love the grain.
The plate is 450mm long and around 120mm wide.
If you are interested in the plate let me know. I'm still working on a website, but should have it finished before Christmas.
Let me know what you think!

Disclaimer:
My videos are for entertainment purposes only. Some of my techniques might not be the "best" or safest, so when using any tool or machinery always read and understand safety/manufacturers guidelines first.
And Yes, I'm aware that wearing gloves while woodturning is considered an unsafe practice. The gloves I wear are tight-fitting and don’t have any loose threads. I wear them for the protection of my skin. This is a risk that I am willing to take, however I am still very conscious of the potential danger and I do not touch any spinning parts of the lathe. DO NOT copy my actions if you feel unsafe doing so.
Do you like the grain?!
very much, reminds me wood of vintage guitars 👍
Beautiful.
Yes!
It is stunning, Harry!
Slovely 🤩
Cherry is always gorgeous
You are a daring fellow, Harry Smith.
The grain is gorgeous!!
Interesting piece, it does show off the wood.
Nice work!
Luckily for me, I can buy lumber "pre-curved" at my local Lowe's and Home Depot.
We have wood yard locally which sells similar products, welcome to Hutchins!!! 🤣😂
LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Good one!
Turning "air" is so difficult for me. You make it look like a piece of cake, and while filming! Beautiful piece. You are an inspiration.
Is that what they call it? I was wondering, looks dangerous if ya don't know what you're doing, I had never seen anything turned that way, always 'laying down' if you will, parallel to the machine.
Harry it is a beautiful piece of wood. Great job turning. I have turned that bowl over the years and my two children would call them “propeller bowls”. Best wishes!
@Frank Kirby - Well of course...it's either that or a skateboard with an adjustment disorder.
I was waiting for your lathe to take to the air spinning that huge propellor !😄
More I watch your videos, more I appreciate your handling...I think it's very difficult turning on lenght of wood. Another masterpiece from you! Thanks for sharing!
This is the oddest and most beautiful thing I've seen on here
Truly amazing project 💖 it takes a lot of talent to cut that angle. And the grain! I am obsessed 💗 so looking forward to the other two projects. Thank you for showing this one.
watching someone bring out the hidden beauty from a log to a bowl is even enjoyable for the viewer thanks for the view
Quite the brave soul to turn that piece!
Fancy presenting that piece as a cheese board beautiful
Flawless incredible work of art, congratulations
That is beyond incredable. GORGEOUS
You are right, it is splendid. I love the first coat of varnish bringing out the beauty of the wood 🌞
That's a real skill you have Harry, thanks for sharing..
I’ll have to try that, once I get over being scared of turning that much air. I can see catches, with tools flying around the shop.😮
I thought it looked dangerous.
Love the grain on this piece! Just beautiful!
So amazing, that could be a table centerpiece for holiday garland, maybe some candles, or as a serving platter for bread, sushi, cakes, biscuits or cookies, fruit....so many options, stunning m8, simply stunning.
It's gorgeous grain. Your piece shows it off.
You’re a very brave man 🎉🎉😂, outstanding
Wow, beautiful. I might have to have a go at something similar, or at least add it to my never-ending list of things to try!
Wow, I h never seen grain like this. Absolutely beautiful.
Wow Harry, that grain is amazing. Beautiful piece .
Beautiful piece!! ❤️
Yes it is very beautiful!!!!!!!
WOW, that is beautiful.
Absolutely gorgeous. A great work of art I would be proud to display. As always God bless you and yours and thanks again for everything you do! Have a safe and Thanksgiving week!
Such a great piece of cherry. I love the crotch figure that you opened up on the one end. Very well done.
Yes and it's Crazy Cool 😎
That’s really pretty!
Outstanding workmanship the way you moved the chisel up and down the length of wood turning a lot of air love the bowl
Regards
Steve U.K. London
That is gorgeous 😊😊😊
That's beautiful very nice work
Wow that looks great!
Gorgeous
The intense, saturated color is stunning; it will darken slightly with age which will increase the contrast with the sap wood. Cherry is one of my favorite woods to turn. Was this green wood? You did a wonderful job on this; thin pieces tend to vibrate which require a delicate touch with the tool(s).
I cannot believe it didn't snag the tools right out of your hands!
Your right about the grain being beautiful. I made a small piece like that just to hold a tea light candle and at about 6 inches long it was a bit scary I don’t know if I am brave enough to make one at say 2 ft like yours . But yours does look absolutely stunning
That is beautiful
Amazing! Love the grain. Cherry can be beautiful.
Crazy, but what a cracking finish, didn't know that was possible.
This cannot be safe. Maybe band saw and power chisel. But it is beautiful. 👍👍
Beautiful
That turned out awesome!
Very nice work, well done!
I lost my x30ft Wild Cherry Tree in UK Storm Arwen, Dec 2021.
I have so many Seasoned Logs, and some Spare Wood to make into nice Items. Need to make something again, after years away from being in a Tool Shop.
Wouldn't have bothered all that Lathing away that Timber ?
Why not just Chisel and Rasp away in a Bench Vice... That's we did in the School Wood Working Class. Still have my Bowl and carved Spoons to this day. The Grain is so pretty. 👍
Now have Hives in my Garden. So no shortage of Bees Wax to polish those Logs.
Cherry Wood is so lovely it's a waste to use in the Fire 🔥
Maybe a local Wood Turner will take some. 😎
Beautiful piece of wood 😍😍😍
Thank you Madeleine! What did you think of the piece overall? 😄
Beautiful ❤
Thats pretty cool man; wild technique 👌 😎 Thanks for sharing
Lovely, master Harry
Harry you had me scared for your life inside of 2 minutes. But that looks amazing.
That grain is finer than cornmeal
Greetings from Tucson, Arizona USA!
I just discovered you and happy I did.
It's gorgeous!
I am pretty pleased with myself as I knew it was cherry, before I read it.
I *knew* you were making a propeller!!!
Stunning grain but I was so nervous that you didn’t use the tail stock for safety’s sake, at least at the beginning until you got the job balanced better.
I kept waiting for it to propeller off across the workshop 😅
Just beautiful
...yep...I agree...it's beautiful grain...👍
Thank you! What did you think of the piece overall? 😄
stunning grain colour
What beautiful wood grain! I'm sure your hands and arms were sore after turning that piece!
Simply beautiful !!!
Love it!
Oh man that’s one scary piece!! Loved the outcome tho 👏
Love the grain.
Awesome piece of nature and awesome piece of creative work expressed. Great work.
Simply amazing!
Thank you, Clyde! What did you think of the piece overall? 😄
@@HarrySmithWoodturning overall I love it. Took me a minute at first to figure out what you were going to do with it. I’ve done banana bowls before but nothing like that. Loved the finish too. The grain was amazing how it came out.
Lovely Piece 😍
One side ,face of a big raptor.
Well done sir! My wing bowls always look lame
Beautiful pice of art. Fantastic job!
that's beautiful wood! amazing grain
Thank you, Celia! What did you think of the piece overall? 😄
Stunning piece of work mate
I think it's because the limb was to small in diameter.
Loved it ✨✨👌👍👊😎
Beautiful work of art!
Vey unique. I love the shape and of course that grain! I'd like to see this in a couple of weeks. I'll bet this will twist and bend into something extraordinary.
I think it is very beautiful.
Thank you very much, Debra! Would you like yo see another like this?
The wood looks rather “wet” still, was it dried before you started working on it? It would be nice to see updates over time if you keep the piece, to see if there are changes to it as it dries (if it want dried prior).
Apart from a gorgeous finish the grain is beautiful.
One question though,
When you use a faceplate why do you use a chisel and mallet to create a flat area to put the faceplate on rather than using a Forstner bit
great job love the out come
Congratulations. You turned a nice piece of firewood into, ahh nothing.
Very impressive. But would that not have been much easier cutting it on a bandsaw? Maybe touch it up with the lath afterwards to get it symmetric.
The grain is gorgeous! So I'm going to guess what it will be before the end....bread basket? Jewish seder? fish platter? I give up, what is it's purpose, just beauty? That is a good purpose. My cat would use it as a pedestal or a plinth.
Nice work, that's thinking a little outside the box there I've never seen anybody turn a log like that.
You've got a new subscriber buddy, keep up the awesome work 👍👍
Hermoso, que madera es!!!!
Que trabajo maravilloso!!! 👏👏👏💖💖💖💖
Cerezo
The wood and workmanship is undeniably great. I’d have liked more details, such as what the finish was and speed of turning. I also would have appreciated some narration as long as there was no accompanying music. “Most beautiful grain I’ve ever seen” is just hyperbole to get us to watch, I understand that; it’s marketing. BTW, I watched the entire thing despite the numerous commercials inserted by YT. Still, nice piece.
Wow!
Что ЭТО??
Моно лыжа?))
Cool skateboard, bro
That would have been a "Wall Clock" for me.
The reason why that Cherry is vibrant is because, it's part of a limb, AKA BRANCH. Branches always seem to have better color when it's been laying on the ground for a few years, it's the equivalent to what happens to maple, A sort of spalting, only problem is, It's a Branch, there for reaction wood. And being reaction wood, will twist and warp and crack where the pith was. but hey Who cares right, it's only woodworking, looks nice now on videos and gets all the praise from people that don't know anything about woodworking and wood movement!
Awesome Harry.
Thank you, David! Would you like to see a piece like this again?! 😁
@@HarrySmithWoodturning Sure wood, pardon then pun.
Magnifique 😍😘😘😘
Looks dangerous 😳
A band saw would be a time saver for you.
beautiful example of Chatoyance
Gotta be hard on the hands. Interesting color.
Nice.
