Harry, I like this piece. Let me say up front that it is beautiful. As I have gotten older I find myself drawn to this type of turning. I like it’s beauty. The black and gold work excellent together. The turning is evidence of your experience. Thank you so much. Best wishes to you.
I use black lacquer spray a lot and gold gilt cream. When the lacquer is dry I put on a surgical glove and load it lightly with the gold cream. I turn the lathe back on and touch it here and there with the point of my gloved finger and the effect is very pleasing.

Who knew?! Oh my land! Absolutely breathtaking! All of your pieces are beautiful and exquisite and I love every one of them but I have to say this one is my favorite! When you started spraying I was .... OK let's just wait and see. Then you put the gold on and I was... ohhh not to sure... but oh my! Love it! I would have never imagined the grain popping like it did!

Nicely done. Did myself a table lamp base in exactly the same way. Gotta be quick rubbing off the excess gilding tho. Dries real quick. Ended up using methylated spirits to do it👍👍
I had my doubts about the black paint because I love the natural wood grain to show. Adding the gold made it really pop though. So I concede to the better color choice. Beautiful job.

I have very little experience in woodworking, but took a class in middle school in the 1970's, one of three girls to in a woodshop ever at the middle school. I never got the opportunity to turn wood back then. But I enjoy watching others create. So as for techniques, I have no suggestions at all, I'm just watching to learn and be entertained, but I love art!
Looks awesome. Maybe look into using an ebonizing solution instead of spray paint. If needed you can also boost the darkness by using a tannin solution on woods that don’t have a bunch of tannins before ebonizing the piece.

Hello Harry! Here’s why I liked this video: I also use HSS tools and carbide studs. These are sometimes very useful. I liked the different phases of machining mixing HSS and platelet tools. And the finish is really very successful, you made a very beautiful object!
That came out beautifully! I really like how you stop as you work, it looks like you are seeing what the wood has to say about the finished product. That either sounds nuts or you know EXACTLY what I mean, I do the same thing with other art forms, even what belongs in a painting or drawing and what to leave out. :)

I would love to have the speed control your lathe has. Mine is as analog as it gets. Very little speed adjustment. I can't turn items slow like you do when you start this video
Great video Harry. Use of gold leaf on ebony background really brought out the veins of the wood. Do you build these items purely on inspiration or based on something that you have seen or liked? It seems that you create these items without lots of measurements so they are unique items.

@@HarrySmithShorts I'm always intrigued by hollowing. I can turn the shape you did (not as well) but hollowing still challenges me. I was hollowing a smaller vase today and have a hard time doing it smoothly, avoiding catches. I managed, but would like to do it better. I realize, though, that showing hollowing is, by its nature, difficult. even on full length videos.

Interesting. How deep is the internal cavity? Is it protected with some sort of finish? We can’t really tell. Can the finished piece actually hold a bouquet of flowers and water?
Thanks for watching Gary! The cavity goes to the bottom of the vase and it is protected by sanding sealer, however it wouldn't be able to hold water 😊👍

Nicely turned from an unusual piece of original stock. But personally, I think it would have looked much better with a medium-dark stain on the original wood. The black with the gold highlights makes it look tacky.

Nicely turned from an unusual piece of original stock. But personally, I think it would have looked much better with a medium-dark stain on the original wood. The black with the gold highlights makes it look tacky.
Thanks for your comment Bob, but I let it dry thoroughly before applying the gold, it wasn't tacky. 😃🪵👍 🤣😂
