The biggest regret I strongly feel is them not remastering Comix Zone in 3D for the 3DS which would've would've looked incredibly stunning visually (to this day I still wonder if Comix Zone has the best graphics on the Genesis in terms of aging well versus others attempting 3D graphics when they were still brand new at the time). @@iwanttocomplain Hmmm. Apart from the intro and some decent use of overlapping parallax mostly in the first stage, I'd say Speedy Gonzales in Cheese Catastrophe is quite a generic platformer and standard affair to be honest, and nothing particularly graphically impressive. @@inceptional no it doesn't look bad. Because the animation is as good as a Loony Toon cartoon. The loading routines for all those frames of animation are in fact something to write home about. The colours and overall scene in action displays mastery of the hardware and excellence in hit boxes and such things. I'm super bored of muscle men with guns and the character pixel art of Gunstar Heroes, Phantasy Star 4 and Contra, is primitive by comparison.
Do people talk about Alladin? Sure. But what about the Looney Toon games. That animation is as good as the Disney games.

I'll be controversial and say Sonic 3D looks better than Donkey Kong Country. DCK has a lot more going on but Sonic 3D is a lot sharper in its presentation. Although neither game plays as good as they look.

Castlevania 3 is a very old fashioned 8 bit looking game with alot of very stark horizonal and vertical lines. The colour palleted is rich and deep but is is a little dark and muddy and textures and backgrounds can lack detail. The artwork of Vectordean is alot more sophisticated. James Pond, Rolo to the Rescue and The Aquatic Games. The bright cartoons of Tinhead, likewise achieves a bold and vivid graphical presentation which is instantly charming.
Phantasy Star 4 has childish 8 bit style graphics just like PS2. The rom is used mostly on illustrations and portraits for story unescapable cut scenes instead of scenery. They look like silly dolls. Phantasy Star 3 on the other hand could be considered one of the best looking games in terms of it's pixel art, which is far more advanced in both portraits, of which there are and scenery tiles.
Hardware tricks on Mega Drive rarely achieve actually looking particularly great, to be honest. Ranger-X is a prime example of wasted time on visual effects. You could argue Pugsy makes interesting use of hardware tricks. 3D Blast isn't a technically impressive game. Using 1 simple background and only the base simple functions of moving and animating a background and also sprites. It uses sprite priority to achieve Sonic disappearing behind the loop background tiles before making him appear in front of them again as moves out from the loop. Which is not a complicated thing to program r for the hardware to acomplish.
Likewise, Contra is actually not using any special hardware tricks other then plain old hdma, used for drawing the track in driving games. The game is actually not very well optimised. Phantasy Star 4 is not much to look at. The background of Road Rash 2 spring to mind as much better.
You know, if you praise mediocrity, to misinform as to what the true examples of excellence is. I don' think there are many people still uninformed about Gunstar Heroes, Contra and PS4, all of which are basically graphically passable if not spectacular. Which is a shame because many games on the system could be considered more or less spectacular that many people most likely are not aware.
For instance. Did you know Undead Line looks like shit until you start getting into it and it becomes insanely good, especially fighting the mid level boss in the graveyard. I would shout out Story of Thor, Strider, Super Fantasy Zone. What about Daffy Duck in Hollywood? That game looks amazing.

@@SonofSethoitae this video is like "gunstar heroes is impressive because parallax or something, and ranger-x changes the palettes and things like that. But really what you see if a bit visually confused and maybe less coherent than a 'scene' from Rolo to the Rescue and the fabulous artists that are responsible for what ends up being called 'graphics'.
Virtua Racing is good graphics because it's carefully chosen colours and the egineering involved that the game is running at a locked 15fps on a console from 1988 with a 7mhz chip and a 23mhx in-cart chip.
But really it's because it runs at a regular frame rate and therefore is fun to play and they chose the precise correct colours from the pallets. Along with the UI typography being solid and menus bold and interesting.
There's alot of thought that goes into many different elements of the end product of a game that you see on the screen. Art designers, graphic artists, art directors, graphic designers. These days they are texture artists and data pipeline engineers for the most part.
