A well presented wrap up. One thing not talked about is the VW torque limiting in reverse gear. 550nm is great going forwards, but if you only have 200nm going backwards then in deep sand or trying to reverse a heavy boat up a driveway, the wheels just won't turn. Beware if these are things you plan to use the vehicle for.
What a load of horse shit! Tow over 80kph and warranty is voided? Crap! Who told you that? Give them a kick in the nads for lying! Torque limiting? Firstly, many manufacturers vehicles do not perform as well in reverse as forward. I have seen cruisers stuck in soft sand and unable to reverse. Mind you, I did reverse my auto (no low range)Amarok in the same spot without any issues. Can't reverse out? Since when? Even towing a trailer in very soft deep sand, I have never had a problem reversing. If the vehicle can move, it will do so as you would expect any vehicle to do. If it's bogged to the eyeballs, then it's not going anywhere in either direction, just throwing dirt with the tyres.
Why is the navara is so underrated. I personally own one here in the philippines and i have no complaint. I even like how it ride compare to a harsh leaf spring suspension of other pick up truck. I know its not the best pick up truck in the market but its the best truck for me.
Amarok V6 is the pick, particularly once VW sort the airbag issue and add a safety tech pack option. It’s the most car like, has the best drive train and is a proven performer off the blacktop even without a transfer case.
And outside of warranty you would only own the D Max or Triton . I believe you need to mention the on going problems faced with the "popular" utes . Rangers DPF , auto and now recalls on steering failure , Hilux's injectors (again) and DPF failures . You are right , the D Max isn't as refined , but its also the only ute here that will live with a maxed gcm everyday and with money saved over the others you can go nuts at ARB and get your lockers !
It's true the isuzu has its engine (which is actually quite good) and excellent reliability as it's main selling points where I live in Thailand. It's the most popular pickup, along with the hilux. A lot of rangers are sold also but they do seem to have a lot of problems, as indicated by complaints on their local facebook page.
Alex Frankl : Yes there are few problems and issues with most of the common brands of Utes, the DPF failures are mostly due to not doing much highway running for extended periods of time for heat buildup to allow proper regeneration of the DPF , and from most of the guys that I’ve spoken to that run vehicles such as the Toyota, Mazda and Ranger in relation to (and some that have had these particular problems) most are related to (or) mostly town or city driving according franchise dealerships .I myself haven’t had such problems with my current vehicle, as for the fire risk, it’s a storm in a tea cup really and it will be fixed by new heat shielding that stops long grass accumulation and buildup from occurring.

Did anyone note there was no 5 or 7 in the rankings? How is it the Navara always scores last even though the review said it can get there eventually? I find the Navara great on road, traction control works great and perhaps the only issue is a bit of ground clearance but then a small lift/change in suspension would see that fixed anyway
I noticed you never mentioned safety , the cheapest ute and the one you battled to put down and had to admit it gets the job done also has the best safety rating. More than 36.3 from 37 in testing. To me it is under powered other than that it is by far the best value of all these , Was offered a new one today for 32k drive away no more to pay and is also by far the cheapest to maintain. Triton. No I never bought it , the lack of power in all these utes would drive me nuts. But its for the wife and I will consider it after I test a few others. Its definitely worth considering for the missus with that safety rating.
Really enjoyed this one guys. Despite having watched just about every worthwhile review for these vehicles, you'll still had so much crucial information that others missed - especially given these vehicle's use case. Now there are a lot of changes and differences in what we get here in India - almost no utes, only some of their SUV versions - but it's still illuminating for a buyer. Wish you'll had included steering feel for all the vehicles though. Cheers!

Thats ridiculous. The v6 diesel in the amarok has been in audi and vw cars since early 2000's and has proven to be a very reliable engine. The 8sp auto is from ZF which is also by far the best in any ute on the market and proven in many other high powered cars for its strength and refinement. So whats your mechanic on about ?
Agreed. Speaking as both a former mechanic and former car sales rep, I have never seen any other 4WD vehicle come back into the dealer on the back of a tow truck more frequently than the Amarok.
Dmax not as fast you say?. Go to reaper diesel in Perth you will have your mind blown with how tuneable they are and the power figures are pretty mind blowing so I've heard and have seen at the drag strip
A big part of the purchase decision should be how the manufactures respect their customers. The alleged Hilux DPF, Colorado oil use, Ranger grass burning, ACCC Ford $10m Fine & ACCC Holden Compliance , VW Deiselgate. Customer service and reliability should be part of the scoring system if this is used for a buyer recommendation
Why do these reviews only ever test the same handful of utes? It would be great to see the LDV T60 and Great Wall Steed in the mix. Not expecting them to win, but they’re cheap enough to warrant consideration so it would be nice if professional car reviewers would review them so consumers have at least some information that doesn’t come out of a brochure. Perhaps even do a ‘Cheap Utes Shootout’ where only sub $35k utes are put through the ringer?
Is that what happened? There was no mention of that. If they've tried but not been successful in gaining a test unit that should be stated. People can then draw their own conclusions about a manufacturer that doesn't want their product tested.
Depends if they think they can make the value calculation work. You don't need to be the best ute in the competition to be the best value for money. Is a V6 Amarok worth two Great Walls? I't's a different way of thinking for these comparisons, but more similar to the way that actual buyers think when money definitely is a deciding factor. And again, if they had tried to obtain a test vehicle but were unable to, that should have been stated.
what I'm saying is if they tested a Great Wall no one in their right mind would buy one, absolute 0 resale, 0 reliability, very low performance and build quality would be the review, so who in their right mind would buy one after that, would you ? that's why we don't have it to review and yes its easily worth two if you ever want to drive it then sell it

So let me get this right ,the hilux has the most wheel travel in its class, but hampered by traction control being turned off to the front wheels when difflock is engaged. Exactly the same as the Mazda BT 50, which has the same suspension travel and geometry , gearing ratio , tyres size, ground clearance and power/torque specs as the ford ranger except for the front traction cancellation when the difflock is engaged . So ranger comes 2nd with less wheel travel than hilux and Mazda is 4 equal with the same wheel travel as the ranger, but suffers with traction cancelling to the front the Same as the hilux ? Sounds more like 3rd equal between the Mazda and hilux according to your review.
i owned hilux 2.5g 2015 and hilux 2.8le 2018, no major complaints. but i like 2.5g 2015 more. direct feel of power transfer. and no reluctant feeling to dive into the bushes rich roads..
even with all its problems the hilux will always make top 3 cause they always spend to much on advertising. nearly every review I read about it the dpf has issues, the air intake makes it go into limp mode, etc etc. People only buy them for the wierd resale value, its the same as VW and ford now that holden does not have the advertising budget....gotta look after the sponsers. Grab the same utes and review after 100 000kmm and see whhat the result is
The dust issue is unacceptable however it only occurs in extreme conditions. Obviously you shouldn't have to fix it after spending 60g on the car but there are aftermarket fixes available. DPF, according to Toyota, is now fixed as of latest ECU update. For what it's worth, mines at 55k, it's taken a pounding towing, offloading etc, and has been faultless, would by the thing over again no question
David Burt yeah I am pretty impressed with it actually. I still think low range in a 4x4 is a must to be a proper off-roader. But, as I said. Very impressed.

he is paid to do that though and given that ute each time this is his 3rd and this is why they do not have any lockers/mods other than suspension mod because they test products. BTW as Stranach said, it does not have a great traction control no matter how much Graham says it has. I would listen to Stranach any day over than John Badmouth Bogan who claims to be autoexpert!
I've driven all of them many times, bar the Mercedes... and the Holden Colorado is definitely the fastest, that duramax is a ball tearer!! Easily spins first gear, huge amounts of torque.
Granted, they do make very good power, but where it falls down for me is in terms of the interior. The grade of the dash plastics and the multimedia graphics just seem a little cheap to me.

Every car is ok as new but what people need to know how the will look like after 100 000km after 200 000km if riden decently and service intervals followed. Visually for me is winner Ford Ranger, but question is, is there some hooks waiting for owner.
All these utes are marketed as family off road tow vehicles but if you look at the specs the GVM and GCM is very poor and if in a accident could possibly leave you with no insurance. Have a good look underneath them and you will be shocked at where some of the wiring , pipes for brakes fuel and transmission lines are placed not to mention how easy the cv boots bust if used for bush work amongst sticks and ruggered terrain.DPF components hang down low on some of these cars as well.In the auto models of these utes check to see if they have a oil cooler for the transmission if intention of towing. The only cooling standard in many of these utes are pipes that run through the bottom of the radiator.This system can fail and you end up with radiator coolant in your transmission. Do not trust the sales people.Best to do research before buying a modern 4wd as there is a lot of expensive components to replace if failures occur once out of warranty.
One of these manufacturers has the highest reliability, highest resale value, highest quality, and highest technology. It also has bigger Market Cap than all other major automaker combined, wonder why?
ford resale on ranger is as much as the hilux now. do a bit of research before becomming a sheep and just liking hilux coz of the badge. they are not good cars anymore and have way more DPF issues than the ford

I used to live in América and owned and still own a tacoma trd pro. I wanted to buy an australian truck but thought that the merc was slugish, stiff and has no storage, the Amarok didnt even have low range, and the hilux was stiff, plus the tacoma was 10000000X better off road and the only truck i thought was good was the bt 50 but i just brought the taco Instead.
interesting you have 9 different utes, we call them small pickups in the US, and all we get are chevy, toyota, nissan and honda an d now ford ranger, can you say protectionism of the big 3 pickup trucks, Ford Chevy and Dodge.
Can someone please explain to me what this so called dpf issue with the hilux is? Most of the driving I do is on country roads in Australia 100 - 110 kph only local towns where its 50kph here and there, so I am not sure exactly how this translates to this issue the Hilux has? A lot of people i know who have the Sr5 said they haven't had any issues.... If someone could let me know that would be great as I am on the verge of buying one...
Hi Mark, We have elaborated on the issue here: www.whichcar.com.au/news/toyota-prado-no-cost-flat-tailgate-dpf-switch Basically if you don't drive your Hilux long enough for the engine to get up to operating temperature, it won't be able to produce the heat to burn off the particle build up in the DPF filter by itself. It is understood this usually affects drivers who don't drive their Hiluxes on long enough journeys, particularly those who live in cities where their destinations are very close by. But if you live in the country, and drive long enough at cruising speeds to bring the engine up to operating temperature, often enough, you should be fine. The engine will automatically regenerate the filter without you having to do anything. Hope that helps.
Personally the only utes I would consider even looking at in this mix are the Dmax or the Hilux but in all honesty I wouldn't even want to spend the money on any of these new cars my Hilux is nearly 30 years old now and has well over 400,000 ks on it and still runs like the day it was bought, they just don't build them like they used to and that's the truth. Sure it's only got about 90hp and 186nm of torque which is anorexic by today's standards but I know I would pick the old girl to do a trip through hell and back any day because I know an old Toyota will do it time and time again without fail, I'd love to see any of these apart from the Dmax or hilux last past 350,000ks. But out of all of them I wouldn't own the VW if my life Fu*cken depended on it. And in my opinion solid Axels destroy IFS off-road regardless of how old they are, they flex better are much more durable and 10000x more reliable no rubber boots to tare.
That Merc is a bit disappointing when you think how much they are charging for them and what they could have done with it. Likewise its a shame the Amarok V6 doesnt have low range gearing and from what I have read it is not a great tower either.
My dad has purchased the bt50 and it is pretty thirsty he told me if I use it I should filled the tank😏 I think I will buy the d max because its fuel efficiency🤷🏻♂️ and also the design is pretty cool
I Think he said that so you “wouldn’t use it” lol . They (Bt50)aren’t that thirsty , the new hilux’s 2.8 engine uses more than the 3.2L the real test is when towing and loaded up , that’s when you see how thirsty the smaller capacity engines are !

V6 amarok motor is a grenade. Barely last properly pasy 150k, hilux renound for cracking pistons and heads. Ranger has been refined incredibly well and is a far superior vehicle.

Why do all the trucks in Australia come with that cab guard thing in the bed? I love trucks so I should know what it’s called but I have just never considered putting one in mine. Are all of them easily removable? That would mess with a lot of stuff I would like to do with the bed so I would definitely want to take it off ASAP.

Wow no Hilux fan boys on here yet disputing the call. I came to the same conclusion when buying my Ranger. The reason I didn't go the Amarok? The dealers are arrogant a$$holes and I didn't have confidence in their ability for after sales customer support. That an I used my own cash and the Amarok is so much more expensive when its equipped to the Ranger levels. But the ride, initial quality and power of the Amarok are a step above the rest at the moment. VW just need to sort there shit out before I hand over my hard earned.

When considering buying a dual cab I spoke with my mechanic, the only advice he gave me was don't get the Amorak.

even with all its problems the hilux will always make top 3 cause they always spend to much on advertising. nearly every review I read about it the dpf has issues, the air intake makes it go into limp mode, etc etc. People only buy them for the wierd resale value, its the same as VW and ford now that holden does not have the advertising budget....gotta look after the sponsers.
Grab the same utes and review after 100 000kmm and see whhat the result is
The dust issue is unacceptable however it only occurs in extreme conditions. Obviously you shouldn't have to fix it after spending 60g on the car but there are aftermarket fixes available. DPF, according to Toyota, is now fixed as of latest ECU update. For what it's worth, mines at 55k, it's taken a pounding towing, offloading etc, and has been faultless, would by the thing over again no question

Really surprised to find out there is no low range in the Amarok.
It’s has a ZF 8 speed and clearly the first 2 low ratios in the box do the trick.
David Burt yeah I am pretty impressed with it actually. I still think low range in a 4x4 is a must to be a proper off-roader. But, as I said. Very impressed.

he is paid to do that though and given that ute each time this is his 3rd and this is why they do not have any lockers/mods other than suspension mod because they test products. BTW as Stranach said, it does not have a great traction control no matter how much Graham says it has. I would listen to Stranach any day over than John Badmouth Bogan who claims to be autoexpert!

I've driven all of them many times, bar the Mercedes... and the Holden Colorado is definitely the fastest, that duramax is a ball tearer!! Easily spins first gear, huge amounts of torque.

Granted, they do make very good power, but where it falls down for me is in terms of the interior. The grade of the dash plastics and the multimedia graphics just seem a little cheap to me.

Every car is ok as new but what people need to know how the will look like after 100 000km after 200 000km if riden decently and service intervals followed. Visually for me is winner Ford Ranger, but question is, is there some hooks waiting for owner.

All these utes are marketed as family off road tow vehicles but if you look at the specs the GVM and GCM is very poor and if in a accident could possibly leave you with no insurance.
Have a good look underneath them and you will be shocked at where some of the wiring , pipes for brakes fuel and transmission lines are placed not to mention how easy the cv boots bust if used for bush work amongst sticks and ruggered terrain.DPF components hang down low on some of these cars as well.In the auto models of these utes check to see if they have a oil cooler for the transmission if intention of towing.
The only cooling standard in many of these utes are pipes that run through the bottom of the radiator.This system can fail and you end up with radiator coolant in your transmission.
Do not trust the sales people.Best to do research before buying a modern 4wd as there is a lot of expensive components to replace if failures occur once out of warranty.
One of these manufacturers has the highest reliability, highest resale value, highest quality, and highest technology. It also has bigger Market Cap than all other major automaker combined, wonder why?
ford resale on ranger is as much as the hilux now. do a bit of research before becomming a sheep and just liking hilux coz of the badge. they are not good cars anymore and have way more DPF issues than the ford

It's Ranger all the way. Best pickup we've had, far much better than the Hilux.

I used to live in América and owned and still own a tacoma trd pro. I wanted to buy an australian truck but thought that the merc was slugish, stiff and has no storage, the Amarok didnt even have low range, and the hilux was stiff, plus the tacoma was 10000000X better off road and the only truck i thought was good was the bt 50 but i just brought the taco Instead.

interesting you have 9 different utes, we call them small pickups in the US, and all we get are chevy, toyota, nissan and honda an d now ford ranger, can you say protectionism of the big 3 pickup trucks, Ford Chevy and Dodge.
Can someone please explain to me what this so called dpf issue with the hilux is? Most of the driving I do is on country roads in Australia 100 - 110 kph only local towns where its 50kph here and there, so I am not sure exactly how this translates to this issue the Hilux has? A lot of people i know who have the Sr5 said they haven't had any issues.... If someone could let me know that would be great as I am on the verge of buying one...

Basically if you don't drive your Hilux long enough for the engine to get up to operating temperature, it won't be able to produce the heat to burn off the particle build up in the DPF filter by itself. It is understood this usually affects drivers who don't drive their Hiluxes on long enough journeys, particularly those who live in cities where their destinations are very close by.
But if you live in the country, and drive long enough at cruising speeds to bring the engine up to operating temperature, often enough, you should be fine. The engine will automatically regenerate the filter without you having to do anything. Hope that helps.

Personally the only utes I would consider even looking at in this mix are the Dmax or the Hilux but in all honesty I wouldn't even want to spend the money on any of these new cars my Hilux is nearly 30 years old now and has well over 400,000 ks on it and still runs like the day it was bought, they just don't build them like they used to and that's the truth. Sure it's only got about 90hp and 186nm of torque which is anorexic by today's standards but I know I would pick the old girl to do a trip through hell and back any day because I know an old Toyota will do it time and time again without fail, I'd love to see any of these apart from the Dmax or hilux last past 350,000ks. But out of all of them I wouldn't own the VW if my life Fu*cken depended on it. And in my opinion solid Axels destroy IFS off-road regardless of how old they are, they flex better are much more durable and 10000x more reliable no rubber boots to tare.

That Merc is a bit disappointing when you think how much they are charging for them and what they could have done with it. Likewise its a shame the Amarok V6 doesnt have low range gearing and from what I have read it is not a great tower either.

My dad has purchased the bt50 and it is pretty thirsty he told me if I use it I should filled the tank😏 I think I will buy the d max because its fuel efficiency🤷🏻♂️ and also the design is pretty cool
I Think he said that so you “wouldn’t use it” lol . They (Bt50)aren’t that thirsty , the new hilux’s 2.8 engine uses more than the 3.2L the real test is when towing and loaded up , that’s when you see how thirsty the smaller capacity engines are !
And still no mention of all the reliability issues i suppose they are all as bad as each other so no need to mention it.

Haha really mabey per 2016. The new dpf hilux are fucked even Toyota told some of the big mineing places two by pass it and if told them how to do it. Then when Toyota was question on it they back peddle that quick it wasn't funny.

Do they not have a TRD pro Toyota or the ZR2 colorado outside the US? I never see them being reviewed but i always see wildtrack rangers.
No ZR2 Colorado in Australia, and I believe the TRD Hilux was recently discontinued. (though it was just an accessory pack, no engine changes.)
I have an my18 Colorado and love it, I agree the Vw is clearly the best but for the money the Colorado doesn't disappoint :)

Um, that was a Navara behind the Triton's stats.
V6 amarok motor is a grenade. Barely last properly pasy 150k, hilux renound for cracking pistons and heads. Ranger has been refined incredibly well and is a far superior vehicle.
Why no 79 series landcruiser in the review? It can do things none of these Utes can do.

Why do all the trucks in Australia come with that cab guard thing in the bed? I love trucks so I should know what it’s called but I have just never considered putting one in mine. Are all of them easily removable? That would mess with a lot of stuff I would like to do with the bed so I would definitely want to take it off ASAP.
Nathan Curet its a roll bar, protects the cab from crushing if it tip over or rolling down the hill, just like how race cars have roll cage inside, some are just for the looks

I came to the same conclusion when buying my Ranger.
The reason I didn't go the Amarok? The dealers are arrogant a$$holes and I didn't have confidence in their ability for after sales customer support. That an I used my own cash and the Amarok is so much more expensive when its equipped to the Ranger levels. But the ride, initial quality and power of the Amarok are a step above the rest at the moment. VW just need to sort there shit out before I hand over my hard earned.
Thats because all of the Hilux boys have faced Reality and either bought a Ranger or the Amarok. haha :-)
