You have grown in this hobby young man. It’s nice to see your interest and love of the hobby. I’m 64. My first tank had a slate bottom and stainless steel frame. We used a bubble up filter with carbon and floss and all was well. Oscars were my choice of fish. Today and for the last 30 years I’m into salt water. Yet every time I pass a chiclid tank I take a double look. Rams would be my choice. I’m tired of skimmer bs and so on. So keep up the good work and continue to introduce this great hobby to the kids of today. God bless !!

Just commented on an older video - but worth saying again : THANK YOU for the tip on getting the top off. Like you I'v been prying and having a hard time, Tried pulling with the handles, didn't think to try pushing.. Thanks again
I also had a incident with my 407 not sealing properly and had a leak. But I got a tip from a friend and he told me to set my 407 inside a cheap Tupperware type plastic tub you can get at Walmart or any store that sells kitchen supplies. The one I bought is about 10 inches tall a little wider than the canister and about 2-1/2 to 3 times the foot print of it. In my particular stand I have room. And I use the excess space for chemicals bottles fish nets etc. I also purchased a small battery powered water detector alarm that will sound off in as little as 1/8th in of water. When I take my hose assembly off I put it in the tub beside the filter so any drops fall in the tub. The time it leaked on me I had just gone to bed and a piercing alarm went off, at first I didn’t know what the heck was going on because I had forgotten it was in the tub. When I went in to check it had leaked and started filling the tub and consequently set off the alarm avoiding disaster. Just don’t forget to test the batteries occasionally. I change the batteries in mine when I change my smoke detector batteries once a year. I started having trouble with getting it to seal after about two years. The same friend also told me I should take the seal off clean it and lubricate it with food grade or petroleum free silicone grease. (It won’t degrade the rubber) you can get it in any hardware store. I also lubricate the seals on the hose attachment where it goes into the filter head. I clean and Re-lubricate them probably twice a year. But I also purchased a new replacement seal for the canister head and a set for the hoses because they will Eventually break.
I was about to comment on another one of your 07 cleaning series asking how to get the damn thing off without having water all over the place and of course, you pre-empted my question by leading me to this video. You have it all covered bro. Keep up the great work.
75 gallon planted fluval 407 Been polishing with poly fil but just added chemi pure green, the fish are floating can't wait to see how the plants like it.
I always pull the plug before lifting the gray tab and keep the filter unplugged when using the siphon pump thing. One time the rubber ring part came out and it took some time to take apart the filter and put it back in. I would consider buying a backup battery that gives about 10-20 minutes of power (at least for computers) for your tanks. It might have a weird smell for the first week or so. I have changed the water so many times without lifting the gray tab… I put something against the filter and then put pressure on the top to pry it open, which works when you’re outside and can let the water spill everywhere. Great video as always!
407 is the best👍🏼 I bought one for myself. It would be cool if 507 appeared instead of fx4, for example, or as an alternative to it. In my opinion, episode 7 is better than fx🤷🏻♂️ Have a nice day everyone .
Great job explaining and demonstrating how to work with that canister. I just picked up the 407 for my 75 gallon, and now I feel much more comfortable working with it. Thanks again bud
Awesome Video, I’m glad you put this Series Together on The 07 Series I remember when I had to ask you about getting this done 🤪can’t wait for the new video on the 07 series
Do yourself a favor if you're like me, put a sticky note on your cannister to say "unplug before cleaning". Just had mine literally explode all over my floor being forgetful from the last time I cleaned it.
Kev!! Killing it again brotha!! You make things easy for everyone! Great series bro thank you! Ima making my own version of a 407, using a power head that flows 295/h. In theory it would flip my heavily stocked tank 7 times/h. I think that’s enough, any thoughts or recommendations?
Thanks foe the guide! I am removing my tank. Bht i am keeping the canistwr filter... the beneficial bacteria will most likely die... since i wont be buying and installing the canister filter to a new tank.. sadly this bacteria may die and ill have to start all over when i decide to buy another tank.
Along with everything this video, put the 407 filter in a 5gal pale, 2 small pieces of rope glued to the bottom of the 407. The rope helps lifting the filter out, then using the pale for cleaning the filter.
ON THE CLEANING VIDEO OF407 YOU PUT IMPELLER STICK UPSIDE-DOWN , AT LEAST THAT'S WHAT MINE SAID WHEN ANALYZING ALL OF FILTER BEFORE PUTTING TOGETHER BOUGHT ON A 55.gal. WITH MY FX-4, HOOKED 407 UP TO UVA LIGHT AND WHAT A DIFFERENCE! INSTEAD OF CRYSTAL CLEAR WATER THREE DAY'S LATER IT JUST KEEPS GETTING CLEARER TO AIR LIKE SEE THROUGH
Thank you for this. I have made a big mess twice trying to figure this out. I have not cleaned my 407 for about a month in a half now. Since I started using it. Lol
Hi kaveman. Huge fan of yours. Like the no nonsense videos, as you keep it short, simple and to the point. As you are explaining about Fluval filters, please also explain how to reduce filter outflow force, as I have a 307 and need to reduce outflow due to plans of keeping discus.
Thank you, glad you've been enjoying the channel. To reduce flow use that same gray lever that closes the valves. As you raise it it will reduce flow until you completely close the valve and have 0 flow. So just adjust it until you reach a comfortable flow for your fish.
@@KaveManAquatics I spent so much money, effort and time searching for reducing the outflow of fluval 307, at one point even cutting the flow tube and fitting an inline tap, only for water to leak out and make a mess of my living room. Did wat u told me and worked perfectly. Please incorporate this in ur video so that people who dint know this could benefit from this. My dear brother u are truly a Godsend. Thank u ever so much.
The only thing you left out is burping the filter. After setting everything back up tilting it back, forwards and side to side slowly will release more trapped air than you thought possible. You can also do this every other day just keep the filter running smoother. The best time is about an hour after the first burp.
When set it do you want the outtake to be underwater or above the water line so it makes noise like a water fall when it is all primed and setup ? Right now I have mine underwater . Just want to make sure it’s set up properly
I know exactly what you mean. Theres always a tiny gap, I usually just make sure I push down all 4 corners. After some time if it seems it wont close properly without some leakage it means the gasket needs to be replaced.
Great video! Thanks. The inlet and outlet hoses: can they be upgraded? I don’t like how they are ribbed. I bet the internal ribs of the hoses can become filthy.
Excellent presentation as USUAL because probably you were made for it. Fluval need to do something about that priming switch or whatever it is called. Too delicate and fragile..can easily break. Maybe a Button type that is available in Pennplex Cascade canister. Also the switch of closing/opening the valve's..too delicate. Fluval is heavy duty..so everything must be compatible with it. Everything else good to go and so are you.😅
So I paused the video and did everything you said ,step by step. When I plugged the tank back and primed the pump, shit came flying out of the tank outlet like you wouldn't belive. Crap everywhere inside my tank! Where did it come from and wtf did I do wrong?
Came from your hoses. You may be over feeding and food is getting sucked into filter. When you power back on the force shoots the gunk out. Leave alone for now it’ll clear back up…next filter cleaning do a hose cleaning too.
Hi, I need your help, Can you please advise me how to get rid of this brown algae at least I think it’s algae my water is clear except for this stuff it looks terrible but I must admit I am very new to the world of aquatics, Thanks my friend.
Brown algea is pretty common in new tanks. It's most likely a combination of too much light(artificial or natural,) over feeding, and new tank cycle. Reduce light, feed less and keep cleaning off the algea. Over time it will start to diminish.
How would you recommend moving from a HOB filter that’s been in my tank for 2 years to a canister filter? I can’t find a video anywhere on yt that covers this topic. Any help would be appreciated ! Thanks
It all depends on the bio-load in your tank. I only run 1 FX6 in my 150 American tank, but its not overstocked...Adding a second filter wouldnt hurt though. If you think your water can be clearer, it will definitely help!
is it ok to have alittle loop with the hoses like you do going up to your tank? the manual says to have the hose as straight as possible up to the tank. im having a hard time doing that with my set up and seeing you have a loop in the hoses made me wonder if this is working fine with you.
Can you add some kind of check valve to prevent back flow in case of power outages and heaven forbid thr lid isnt on correctly? Also, i want to replace the HOB that came with my 55g. Whats the best yet cheapest canister filter? I looked into the 407 but I dont have $230 right now to drop on one.
I got this today. All I could find was the 407 I know it’s overkill for my 20 tall but it’s already clearing my water and I’ve noticed the ammonia is FINALLY going down so maybe it will cycle. I’m using fritz complete because I’m having to do a fish in cycle and so far they are doing good.
Glad to hear that. If you’re doing a fish in cycle this technique will work well…you can substitute the stability for Fritz complete since you already have it - ruclips.net/video/gt6bP4_p7iA/видео.html
Hi Kev Thanks for the videos. What is your opinion on using a spray bar on the Fluval 407? I am trying to place my wave makers as you recommended but with my return flow the right I am concerned it may fight the wave maker flow placed above my uptake on the left. I can position the return flow to aim at the opposite front corner so it won't meet the wave maker flow head on in hopes of decreasing the turbulence but I don't know if this would be enough.. I am concerned about aiming the return to the front of the tank since the tank is only a 65 gallon. Also in regards to the spray bar I am wonder if I won't get full benefit of the 407 because I am restricting the outflow due to the smaller holes in the sprayer. Also I am concerned the spray bar will make the pump work harder because of the restricted flow shortening the life of my filter pump. Thoughts? Thank you in advance.
I have the 407 and spray bar. It pumps our a solid stream out every hole. No issues so far. It spans across my 75g tank providing flow everywhere. You can aim it where ever you want. I liked the idea of having water circulation all over instead of from one side.

Is it 407 fluval filter enough for 75 gallon fish tank?
