I've been running a 407 on my 55 gallon for about 2 years. Its great zero problems clean it every 4 or 5 months and its not bad at all. Love mine. Looking in to getting 3 more to replace some others on my 3/ 75 gallons. Thanks for sharing
Jason, I always love PTA reviews, but most important the 6 months and year end overviews. I wish other creators would follow that same path. Thank you from NYC
I’ve been using one on a community 75 for two years now. It’s been fantastic. Only complaint is that mine is really hard to get open. But besides that, it holds a ton of media, has good flow, and is easy to maintain because it’s so well designed
I don't have any tanks big enough for a canister filter. Maybe my 40B, but I have blue neos in there so just using sponge and lots of plants. I tuned in to see your new set up in the gallery. Looks awesome!
I have had my FX407 running on my 75 gallon community tank for a year now. I also have a couple of sponge filters cuz you never know when one is needed for a quarantine tank. I think the 407 has been a great choice. It is very quiet. I also like how easy it is to customize the filter medium within. I would sure recommend this cannister filter.😊
Thank Jason I'm actually weighing between the 407 and the sicce whale 500 for my 75 gallon right now I have an FX6 on it. But just bought another 6 ft tank and will use the FX6 on it when I get it ready to go.
Great filters. I use the 407 on my 86g and it works great. I use the 307 on my 32g and the flow is too strong so the gray lever on the canister allows you to adjust the flow! Love these filters. Only thing I don't like is there is no heater or UV on these filtration systems, also a spray bar is an add on. The add on's are not cheap either. They do make a UV filter that plumbs right in, but it is one more thing to mount in the stand or on the wall. Plus, you now have a heater in the tank which is one more thing to look at. One more thing to note is the flow stays strong no matter how dirty the filter gets. This is both good and bad. It is hard to know when to clean it without peaking inside. With the Sun-Sun filters the flow gets slow and you know it is time to clean.
I have several 407's on my 180 liter (about 48 gallons) tanks and one on a 200L/53 gallon tank. I really like them, they just work without problems. They are about maxed out for the 200 liter tank though. I'm planning to get some bigger tanks, in the range of 190-250 gallons, possibly even a bigger one in the future, I think I will keep those filters, just taking out the biomedia and just have serious water polish for them with progressively finer sponges and filter floss in the top compartment. Then a sump with biomedia and wavemakers to complete enough water circulation. 1-2 407's will seriously polish the water, hopefully giving the tank water that clear, invisible, almost eerie look.
Thank you I have the same filter and I’ve had a ton of trouble with cloudy water since I switched to two trays of the bio ceramics. I’m gonna go get some more sponges and a bunch of activated bacteria and hope this changes that!
I have a 406 and 407 on my 75 gallon. The 407 is definitely quieter You may want to invest in a aqua stop valve for the future. I had to replace it after two years on the 406.
I've been using these for years. I've killed two Fluval 406s because of using them for so long and I currently run a 407 on a 72 gallon bow front with 10 corydoras, two adult bristol nose plecos, two Sparkling Gourmis, 5 harlequin Rasboras, and 15 beckford pencil fish.
I thought it was dark too so I turned the brightness up on my phone and it was just fine. I have the setting that dims the brightness automatically and it is frequently an issue for watching videos.
Im going to order one of these for my 90 gal Oscar growout tank to help the Tidal 110 that is already on it. Thanks for the review and insights, as always.❤
If it ain’t broke don’t fix it! It’s just a preference for me to duel filter. That way when you clean 1 the other is left untouched. Keep the bio filter strong.
When you release the clamps pull the top portion of the clamps outward and push them down and that will pushed the top upwards to release the seal from the bottom portion of the canister. Check the fluvial website they have tutorials on all their equipment. I hope you find this tip useful. Best of luck. Let me know how you make out.
Thank you all for the advice. I am aware of this method. I appreciate the confirmation. I will try doing it on a lower surface as I am short. Perhaps I'm just not getting the leverage required. I was also worried about breaking the latches. Thanks again!
I'm planning to buy a Juwel Rio 350 tank for my Mbuna cichlids and I'd love to have a Fluval 407 or a Fluval FX2 to filter it but............ I'm afraid the in and outlet hose won't fit without keeping the lid open. What do you think ?
Im starting a 75 planted tank with angels and congo tetras right now its lightly planted till plants start growin in.i got a sunsun 704b with the tank that sounds rattly and doesnt have much flow, would a 407 or fx2 be better i can get both on sale within $8
Hi Jason, I'm looking to buy the 407 (or the 307?) for an overstocked 30 gallon tank....but, I have dwarf gourami so am a bit concerned about the strength of the water flow. Your advice would be appreciated.
These are great filters. Very happy with mine. I went to the pond guru channel who well help you with better ways to use the filter to make beneficial bacteria.
The 407 is "fine" but its not good or great. It's the HoB equivalent of a canister filter. First. The tubing is cheap, everything is cheap plastic, even the way they package it does t prevent damage. They need to do a better job. Second, it is not designed to work or fit on a 75G. It will, but that doesn't mean it works well. So... What does this mean.... It means that the suction cups on the glass to hold things straight dont work. At MOST this is effective for a 3 foot long tank. It might work on a 55 because of the way the output is designed, again... Its cheaply made. The reason the tubing "doesn't leak" is because the places where connections are made on input and output pipe are submerged in the tank. The canister connections are done at the factory and you have a clamp there ti ensure less likelihood of leaking. They have a spray bar kit that should be standard in the box. They charge enough for it. The media they give you (ceramic) is enough to fill one half of one tray. The chemical media removed means you have 2.5 empty trays out of 4. One has foam. One has the worst quality media you can imagine. This is fluval. They need to be held accountable for all the poor quality stuff.... Especially when the stuff they sell you to replace it with is 10x better quality. On mine: -replaced tubing (now its a standard size and not cheap) -replaced the media -got rid of all the chemical media they give you -added inline co2 -replaced input and output pipes Edit: totally forgot, the massive size and sharp ends of the strainer basket means its almost impossible to get a good prefilter sponge. I used the marineland one, but taking it on and off was like shredding it each time.
@@PrimeTimeAquaticshey hey, thank you as always for the vid. The rim thickness and the glass thickness, yeah you can jam the parts on there, but it's not meant for it. I would love to see you show your setup on the tank itself and installing/removing the clips. The fx series comes with a 4 foot spray bar kit. The x07 comes with a 3 foot long kit. The output on the FX is dual, the one on the x07 is single. I had a lot of issues getting flow the way I preferred, and yes.... Everyone will either be very much for or against the ribbed tubing. It feels very cheap to me. Easy to replace, just wish that fluval upgrades the kit a little bit. Especially basic things like how it's boxed. (Random piece of Styrofoam on top of the canister, but nothing stopping it from being tossed around in the box) There are some issues. If you get one it works, but people have had cracked corners and random issues. Due to basic things like packaging.
I wish your lighting was brighter and the camera angle lower so it would be easier to see you actually put it together, not just parts held up for a quick look
I can’t for the life of me understand why fluval made the hose connectors light grey. Really bothers me because they are so easily seen in the aquarium. Why wouldn’t they just make them black? Poor aesthetics in my opinion
Your first video I watched you were talking poorly about external filters to the extent you even said you didn’t like them you’ve had them before and you wouldn’t use them again in your opinion. 😂😂

Thank you! 😀
since i have fry in my tank i added a pre filter on the intake
Plus it is easy to prime and sett up.
Love my 407. Have had it on my 75 gallon for 4 years now. Absolutely no free floating debris.
Very good explanation on this canister filter.
Dude, love your channel but i have to say your vids are always soooo dark...just sayin. lol keep up the good work!

Someone get Jason a light 😉
I bought one just under a year ago for a crazy overstocked 55 gal. I'm amazed how clean it keeps that tank. So glad I made that choice.
Great filter! Would still run it if the motor didn’t burn out! 5 years of constant use and almost no issues
Cool!
Looks like a good filter! However I would use 2 of them. I like to over filter
So far one has been plenty for a 75 gallon.
If it ain’t broke don’t fix it! It’s just a preference for me to duel filter. That way when you clean 1 the other is left untouched. Keep the bio filter strong.
My only problem with 407 is separating the top from base to maintainence. Any tips?
After you unsnap the hinges, push down on them. The motor housing lifts up enough to remove it easily.

Sometimes you have to work it side to side to break the seal. It does get harder as time goes on at least with my experience. I have a 306
Use food grade silicone grease around the main o rings and the o rings for the aqua stop valve, no force is needed then to reseat them
African Cichlids 🧡
Will this filter fit on the back of a 180 gallon tank....the frame is a little wider than a 75 tank. Just curious if you knew? Great info!!
That might be tough - it has enough to fit over a standard 75 gallon, but there isn't a ton of room to spare.
Definitely well made filter, I guess Italians make good filters too 😅😅
Should I get a 307 or 407 for my 200L tank
307 should do well.
Hi, Jason. Is it true that a dirty filter does not cycle as much water per hr as a brand new/cleaned one ?
It will reduce water flow, but the tank still needs cycled media in the filter.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Could I clean all but one of the sponges ?
My marine tank is 2foot(24") long and a foot(12") deep. Do u think the 407 is too powerful?
For sure. I would go with something with less flow.

No need. What you have will work well.

Tank water won’t help but the media will!

I like it but after a year of having it one of the baskets is falling apart.

Kinda hard to see the product, video is real dark
Ya, I don't know why it posted so dark - it wasn't lile that until it got uploaded.
The canister was easy to set up .
Why do you not care for bio media in canisters? I would think you could pack a lot of bio media in there..
I have never found it to be necessary - the sponge has more than enough space for microbes.
