Looks great, thanks for the early coverage Caleb!
We will see if it have waveform...
It does.
Well, will be a must buy then! Thanks for the info!
Am I the only weirdo that notices how perfect this guys hands are?! I mean I’m pretty sure he could be a hand model!
I remembered when I paid $2000 for my Atomos Shogun for my A7S. It was poorly built and felt very cheap. Also it broke twice, not because I dropped it, the actual unit itself failed. Atomos did take care of me and I'm glad to see their quality seems to improved drastically. Definitely seems like a fantastic buy especially at that price (if it doesn't fail).
Thank you Caleb, glad I held off on the SmallHD until now!
Oh man, freaking game changer! $700 is an unreal bargain!
Yeah I still can't believe thats all they are charging for this thing!
Add another $300 to $500 for the ssd
there's another thing does internal raw and records to cheaper ssd options only cost 1300 brother, that is the real game changer.
Hi, is the performance in editing/render better with the ProRes footage compared with the internal recorded footage out of the GH5?
Greetings from Germany :)
Why does DJI, Atomos, Fuji, Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, and Sony all have to release new tech at the same time... I only have so much money damn 😂
Jonathan Masters looooooool
Jonathan Masters Haha right?! Gotta go sell a kidney so I can afford all the new tech launching.
Chadwin Smith seriously, I heard canon releasing their new mirrorless okay I’ll preorder, then I see Panasonic going full frame and i do video so now I’m at a dilemma again 😂
Because Photokina happens in less than a month :)
Sundirre this is easily the biggest Photokina in years if I don’t say. Everyone is jumping to mirrorless full frame cameras at the same time, this is camera history happening, if only I had more kidneys to sell 🤔 lol
HOLY CRAP. That is incredible, small form factor, HDR, 4k, 10 bit and takes SSD? And $700?!!
hey man, i have a question .. is the display 30hz or 60hz ? and how is the lag of the video feed ?
My DCI 4K monitor greatly appreciates the aspect ratio of this video! :3
excited to see your atomos review epos! even if its a shogun/ninja inferno
From now on I will look at all your reviews and gadget comparison! I was looking at some of the reviews of this but I was either I am kinda off with how they deliver the review or their way of approach. Thank you for doing all these videos! Kudos!
Thanks for the rundown. I've had mine on preorder for a few months now and excited to see what it looks like in more detail now!
Great get, Caleb. Been looking forward to this since NAB. Thanks for the review.
Thanks Jeff!!!
Still relevant today! I am actually faking anamorphic, because of the 2.35 to 1 aspect ratio viewable on this wonderful piece of machinery. Thank you for this!
This new Atomos is an absolute beast. If Sony doesn't address the non-existent flip up screen. This should be a contender for those considering bridging that gap WHILE adding a deeper color space.
Definitely picking one up next month.
Yeah great point! I should have mentioned it wouldn't be a bad idea for vloggers too!
Yup that’s what I’m doing, not for vlogging but I’ll definitely be using it 99 percent of the time!
Atomos has confirmed that even though they can't advertise it, the Ninja V does have the hardware capability to record ProRes RAW if camera manufacturers figure out how to send it over HDMI
Yep, the newer hdmi spec definitely has enough bandwidth. Now if only Apple didnt charge so much for ProRes RAW licensing, it might be more of a solid business decision. And BOTH the manufacturer AND Atomos would need to get licensing for ProRes RAW for whatever camera ends up supporting it and the Ninja V.
I'm hoping that someone does it just to be the on lo y one that does it despite the $$ loss.
Exciting stuff to think we are so close to having 10bit, 4k ProRes RAW out of a camera at these prices with only hdmi.
I'm thinking this means that the upper end stuff is due for some new enhancements that will keep the gap far enough away
you’re gonna get 10bit 4K RAW with the new blackmagic pocket!
Actually the camera manufacturer shouldn't need a licence as ProResRAW has nothing to do with the HDMI raw signal, only the recording format.
Honestly what I really want to see most added personally, it's the ability for the camera and this recorder to get the full 6K non-desqueezed animorphic signal in 10bit from the GH5 over to the monitor and record that! THAT to me would be huge for my work!
@@TheTechnoPilot Sounds to me when I read how Apples licensing works that my statement is accurate.

Am also looking to make a basic Z6 - Ninja V cinema rig. Can't wait to test it out myself and also see your thoughts!
This is beyond slick! thanks for the review Caleb
This may sound odd for the subject but I’ve used this to play xbox one x enhanced games. Played the ninja on 4k 60fps capped with the HDR10 and 120hz mode on console settings. Plays games very well. I know thats not what it was intended for. But a very ludacris way to record 4k gaming footage.
this aged so well. We have both the SDI and the wireless accessories atm
You are sooo lucky to have that in your possession! I've been waiting on this...
CJKnowsTECH Lucky or on the payroll?
There's an optional SDI interface device that mounts to the battery port so you can run a signal from a camera with a SDI output and get passthrough. However, it won't cross-convert from HDMI (the listing on B&H says it can, but the reviews say you can't), so if you're thinking about using it to convert HDMI to SDI, it won't work.
This guy got cross-convert with the Ninja V and the AtomX SDI module -> ruclips.net/video/Pvk-AcRyX0w/видео.html
Small HD Focus is in bug trouble, even the OLED version. I seriously can’t wait to get this
Yeah... Good news is we might see a price drop on the SmallHD Focus!
I’m been waiting for this forever
This channel is definitely the go to resource for lighting and monitors. 😅
So awesome man! Great video 👍
Edit: Also congratulations on 300K bro!
Thanks Tomas!!!
wow so if I was about to buy a SmallHD Focus for $600 and this is slightly more...... why would I buy a monitor-only monitor ?? lol
Haha! Great point!
The SmallHD isn't as bright either.
Yes... also I can unfortunately speak from experience that SmallHD has terrible customer service. I had a SmallHD Focus brick on me after opening it for maybe 45 minutes (trying to use the luts feature). Because I didn't buy it from an "approved store" they made me pay $200 to fix it. FYI, even amazon isn't an approved store... only B&H, Adorama and directly from them.
Wow good point got me thinking for my next monitor upgrade.
It’s more like $1,100 once you buy the SSD, some kind of bracket, batteries, depending on what they put in the box
But at least $1,000 just adding the ssd
Thought you might like to hear my experience with Atomos:
Well, I bought a Nija V in October of last year, about 5 months ago.
I have used it to shoot about 1.5 gigabytes of video and then all
of a sudden it started to lose connection with my Panasonic GH5. At
first I thought it might be the Atomos HDMI cable I was using but
though that not to be the case. I submitted a warranty repair request on the Atomos website and after a week I heard nothing from anyone. I then called the Atomos USA number hoping to talk to someone in tech support but that simply went to voice mail. After more testing I determined it actually was the cable. Finally I heard back and was told they would send a replacement cable which they did. But...
What I bought (and what was on the receipt I sent them) was an Atomos full HDMI to full HDMI cable at a cost of $49 USD. What I received as a replacement was a UCEC 11.81" cable that has a cost
of $9.99 USD on Amazon. I have sent them an email asking why I received a cheap replacement instead of the same as what I bought. I should hope nothing ever goes wrong with the Ninja V as there is no telling what they might send to replace that!!! I would be hard pressed to suggest anyone buy from Atomos if that is their after sale treatment of a customer.
HOLY BALLS!!! Great video dude
I didn't want this when it first came out. Too small of a screen. But now....I'm a believer!
Great video man. This is going to sell like hot cakes and I can't wait to see more content!
Thanks man! Yeah hopefully they can keep it in stock.
@@dslrvideoshooter they'll do as good a job as Sony does with the A7iii.
Pre-ordered here in Dubai...stoked!
Other than the larger screen and SDI option, would it make sense going with a Shogun Inferno anymore?
This might have to be a Christmas present to myself!
They dropped the price to $499 about a month ago. They might be coming up with something else soon.
Amazing review and amazing audio as well.
Nice review, nice storage media 😍
I'm still using, and loving, my Atomos Ninja Assassin. I actually just recently realized there was a new update that allowed for it to record audio over hdmi 😄
I can't wait for this to be in the market... thanks for this review
The one thing I wish this had that the SmallHD does have is a DC out to power your camera with your monitor battery. As an 6300 user this would be a huge help keeping heat out of the camera and improving battery life.
Thanks for sharing the review. Would you be able to mention what are the benefits of using this if I am shooting with a Sony A1? Thanks in advance.
This sounds great Caleb
the problem with this unit and the ones before is the fact that it doesn't give any signal on powering up, which always leaves me guessing if it is in fact powering up or make me press again and the switching the thing off again sometimes, why not a very small, low output led to let you know the thing is running?
I have a question! Do SSD caddies from the Ninja Blade fit the new Ninja V??
Great review, have been looking forward to this unit for a while :)
Nice price-point and quality for those who can get by with a smaller screen.
Thanks for the early scoop bro.
Hi! I can't find any info on whether you can use the ninja V to focus the shot by touching the screen on what you want to focus on. I know its touch screen but that doesn't mean it'll replicate the camera screen does it? Is that doable? I'm looking at using the ninja v with the Canon r6. I have a basic 7" external monitor only (not a recorder) and when I plug in the HDMI to the r6 body the rear screen on the r6 turns off meaning you can use the menu or focus etc. You can use the external monitor to get to the menu functions but you can't use the awesome touch screen focusing options 😭😭😭
Caleb, nice job. Could you shed some light on how bad is the fan noise right from the camera's mics? I record birds and nature so any noise is going to kill this amazing deal, I'm afraid.
I've been dying for this thing since I saw it! I cannot wait for the final version to drop as it's PERFECT for my workflow! AHHHH!!! :P
What a wicked name Atomos Ninja V... damn! Nice vid, bro.
That multi-pin connection could be a godsend if it allows RAW via SDI in the near future. I use my Shogun Inferno on every shoot, and would love to have 5 inch version of it. I need to shoot RAW for many of my projects, but this would still be a great solution for projects that don't need it.
Caleb- great videos! great GH5 Guide! Thansk!
What data rate does GH5 output on HDMI in 4K UHD 60P 10bit mode? Gh5 manual suggests that the 4K 60P output is still IBP compressed, even at 10 bit. If so, wouldn't image quality on HDMI OUTPUT for 4K 30P (All-I 10 bit @400Mbps) be much better than 4K UHD 60P 10bit?
great video! I'm waiting for this to be realised and my costumer have it in the shop and be able to try the latency that the monitor have. I didn't liked how it looked on this video (at the begining when we see Caleb moving and we see him at the monitor with a big latency) I hope that this is something about the preproduction model or maybe about the large HDMI cable from the camera to the recorder, because I really want to buy this monitor and I need a very low latency due to I film most of all action, if this finally have a big latency I will be very sad for losing the recording habilities that this bad boy have but I will have to go for the SmallHD focus.
wow. that hidden jack sold me. you know the SDI is coming for this thing. its cable of RAW so why wouldn't they add it. love the Inferno but it's huge to add as a gimbal attachment.
Thank you so much Caleb. Actually, I just have got mine, however, I'd like to know what type of SSDs fits in this little gadget pefectly in terms of size!
Ok, so cute X 2, then adorable X 2 and finally "advanced and cute" near the end. I'm SOLD!
Hello Caleb, thanks for the video. One question: You showed the DC adapter, but only the one end of the cable, where you screw it on the adapter. What is one the other end? Adapt to what? Thanks.
Do you think the ninja 5 is small enough to be used on the hot shoe with a steadicam? Just wondering about balancing, is the ninja 5 secure enough in the hot shoe.
Caleb did you see the rumor of a full frame Panasonic mirrorless? Exciting!!!!!!!!
Link please?
@@Kelkschiz www.43rumors.com/ft5-panasonic-will-announce-its-first-full-frame-system-camera-on-september-25/
I did! Exciting!
Exciting indeed if that is true. If only they could also include a good AF system, that would be my perfect camera... Though I am a bit scared to find out what it would cost.
@@Kelkschiz knowing Panasonic it will be internal 6k 12 bit pro-RES raw 60 fps for $3000. I don't really think that but if anyone can do it it is Panasonic.
Looks like great value for money! How bad is the fan noise? I would use this in conjunction with a shotgun mic next to it on top of my camera. Do you think it would affect the audio if I place the mic in front of the monitor?
Ok you sold me on 1000 nit brightness.... putting this on my to buy list.
I tried a Z7 out yesterday (I want the Z6) the EVF and screen are very nice and the focus peaking is really nice to use.
The plug in the battery compartment looks like a D-tap from ENG camera’s. I will defo check that out. Have it in pre-order already:D
I'm more impressed with the audio. What microphone record system did you use.
Would there be any reason that the hdmi out from the ninja v wouldn't feed into the elgato 4k60 capture card? It's something I'm considering for recording on the unit and using the passthrough for live content simultaneously. Also with that in mind is the passthrough capable of a clean signal?
Hey Caleb, just wanted to know in color grade with slog 3 does it break like internal recording? If not then worth buying. Just visited 2 times this video to ask this question. Now really need to decide to buy 10bit camera or this monitor. If it breaks then will wait and add some money to get C200.
Hey the LUT/grading you used on this video looks much better on your skin than your current ones (at the time of this comment).
The 4k60p atomos atomflex hdmi cable is a rediculous $150. Any dependable alternatives for 4k 60p 422?
Thinking about buying The Sony FX6 and Ninja v5. Question. Do you still have to the SD Recording cards inside of the camera when recording into the Ninja? Because the Ninja has 500 GB of recording time.
Great Rundown. I Recently purchased a Panasonic S1, not knowing that the Camera doesn't support Trigger or Timecode out Via HDMI. Therefore I cant trigger recording on my Ninja V without physically touching the Unit itself. I was thinking I could Possibly use a LanC connection, but Atomos only supports Sony/Canon LanC out.( Per specifications) do you know of a product I could Mount to my rig and Trigger NinjaV recording via external Remote. Thanks!
Is correct to be used this Ninja video recorder only to extend recording 4K more than the advertised 5 minutos before overheating?
So this recorder could be in your pocket wired to the camera, while you are using the camera?
During concerts or some public events you as photographer can not show too much equipment before calling the attention.
Because you can not set a tripod and huge camera with additional monitor.
Is correct my understanding of this new equipment? Please advice
Thank you
Hell yeah Caleb saving the day again just what I needed, thanks dude!
Also, my boi looking trim af, killin it dude!
Haha! Thanks man!!!
Man! This little baby-monster is REALLY look like the first ATOMOS recorder I wish to bye... FINALLY!
A REAL game-changer...
1. 4K 10bit 50-60p
2. Small and tiny! Those are were 7" - kinda nice to look at, but a NIGHTMARE to work with in the field... a truly horror...!
3. Ju-u-u-ust.... $700... - RI-DI-CU-LO-US !!!!! :)))
Thanks Caleb ! (for the review!)
Thanks ATOMOS!!! You finally made something that I wish...- REALLY wish!!!
Looks awesome for sure!
This is still insanely awesome, now on special for US$499+ tax too I seen. I wonder if a new model is coming? The Ninja V was released in 2018.
Great review!! I'm new to all this so please excuse my stupid question, but what is the purpose of this monitor's recording function? Is it to create a backup in addition to what your shooting in camera?
Hi, Thanks for the great video. Quick question. Can I connect to LANC control port on ZCAM E2-M4 or E2-S6 instead of USB-C ? ie. LANC on Ninja V to LANC on E2 camera. Keeping USB-C free is useful to record with SSD disks directly.
Newbie here - awesome just awesome review on this Ninja V ! --- When recording to the Ninja, does this bypass recording to your camera ? ... could i use a Canon camcorder with this unit ? or a Canon 6D ? .... and what is the advantage to recording to this device over the memory card that you put into the camera ( like you find on a dslr ) Thank you ! sorry for the questions, hopefully you can answer them and maybe others. Very cool ! I want one of these !
When you directly shoot to your external you can shoot at higher quality eg: 4k in 10 bit at 60fps. The difference between 10bit & 8bit when colour grading is vast so worth looking at. A memory card to handle this will set you back a few hundred alone. I've used the Inferno with my Panasonic GH5 and it is a gamechanger. If you have a card that has capable write speeds you can record to both at the same time. I usually pop my cards out though as there's no point really. Worth bearing in mind you will need to look at cages, extra batteries and of course the ssds for a good set up so will set you back a fair bit price-wise. All depends on if you have the work to justify it.
This recorder looks awesome. I’ll probably buy it! I wish that it could send power to my camera, as I’ve gotten used to using a rig that does that from the monitor, but that’s ok, the advantages are worth it, for that price!
1) Who needs that really....? 2) Size matters. Having a proper big screen for focus and composing is priceless. To me this is a step back from 7-inch screen. I'd rather have even smaller recorder and a 10-inch monitor separately. What do you guys think?
This thing is amazing. Very sick.
Looks great! Wondering how much space this will take up on the SSD if I shoot at 4:2:2 10 bit ProResLT...thx! Also, what LUT did you use? Also...did you have to record a few stops brighter?
I want to start with video. I have a good camera but it doesn't have Mic inputs. Is there an affordable and good sound recorder I can either mount on the hot shoe ?
Is the battery included because I did not see one in my box when purchased.
Great video! I saw it when it came on 2018, but wannted to see it again, for my a7iii....QUESTION! do you know if it Will let me récord 4k 60fps on my a7iii? im sure you already know this camera doesn't récord 60FPS so, having the átomos ninja would allow me to do it???
that would totally change my work game...any ideas?
Caleb, I just got mine... what kind of battery plate do I need? I can't find a straight answer the ones I already have don't fit.
Is it less "noisy" if youre not using the record feature? Is this plastic or metall? I do like that they manage to shrink the inside components and get down the power usage. But im hoping we se an updated 7" soon (IBC) with better battery life, thinner, metall, less power hungry and with the additional "add on socket".
Hi Caleb, great videos, very informative and useful. Need your help to choose between Atomos Ninja V and Ninja Inferno. If size and money not an issue is there other advantages of Ninja V over Ninja Inferno? Did you try Ninja V in bright day light? Which one produce more noise? Thank you.
$700 plus SSD’s right? Or does it come with one? If not, I’m guessing the SSD’s are expensive as they’re propriety?
Hi there, well done for your video. By the way I use Sony A7iii, if we use this Ninja v for recording A7iii. Can that record & convert d video to 10 bit & 422 please?
please help. I bought the Ninja V off ebay. when I go to activate it, it says that the DID number is already in use. The seller is not helping, and telling me to contact Atomos support. Any ideas on how I can fix this issue?
Hello!!! Great video!!! I have one little question. Using my 5DMkIII can I record in 4K 60fps???? Do I need some special HDMI cable??
Thanks for this awesome Review. Can you say more about the noise? Is it louder or quieter than i.e the Ninja Flame or the Assassin?
Can the dummy battery that comes with the Ninja V atomos be purchased separately and can it be used on the shinobi?
Which of the Atomos is less noisy? The Ninja V, the Ninja Inferno or the Shogun Inferno?
Great review Caleb ! My main problem with my ninja inferno is the fan noise. Can you hear an improvment if you compare with your shogun ?
Thanks a lot 🙏🏼
Finally a great 5" recorder!
I wanna see side by side, G5, g7, A7iii vs ninja V, Before and after
Wow. Just wow. Awesome review. May need tp sell my Ninja Flame for this Ninja V. Thanks. Ry from Dubai
Also can we buy your shirt?
