1987: Washington Redskins vs Minnesota Vikings Remastered NFL Highlights

  • Forgive me for saying so, but the 1987 Washington Redskins were the champions who, by all logic, should not have been. C'mon... a team with a season-long quarterback controversy, a star running back failing to produce, and a kicker unreliable outside 30-yards is not championship material… unless your coach is Joe Gibbs. In this season finale thriller from the Metrodome, the Redskins overcame all of it, silencing the roar of that Gjallarhorn-blowing Viking crowd and aaaaaaallllmost eliminated Minnesota from the ’87 playoff chase. (Say... what ever happened to that '87 Vikings team, I wonder.)
    Doug Williams took the starting reigns from Jay Schroeder for good, hitting Ricky Sanders on clutch late-game plays again and again as the Redskins defeated the down-but-not-quite-out Minnesota Vikings - setting the stage for a gritty Super Bowl run that was pure Gibbs magic.
    Remastered to 1080p from an original VHS recording just for you, 80’s Redskins fans. I must say, this transfer is one of my finer efforts - please enjoy!

    Doug Williams sure could throw a beautiful spiral. 7:00 was awesome. The Vikings sure had heart. Back when football was awesome.

    I love all of the foreshadowing in this game: Skins / Vikings would play in the NFC Championship, Williams to Sanders for two TDs like the Super Bowl later against Denver, and four years later the best Skins team ever would win another Super Bowl in this same stadium against the Bills

    6:14-the play which prompted a season-altering change for Washington. Joe Gibbs had enough of Jay Schroeder's inconsistency and looked to veteran Doug Williams to get the job done. The result: a much-needed win that would help Washington reach the playoffs and eventually become league champions of the strike/"scab" marred '87 season.

      The Redskins were already in the playoffs by this point and this game had little importance to their playoff standings as win or lose they would have still have had to go on the road to play the Bears in the Divisional Round. I guess it might have been important for team morale because if they had lost here it meant they would have ended the season with 2 straight losses against Miami and Minnesota after nearly blowing a 3 touchdown lead to Dallas in week 14. But it was season altering in that it brought in Doug Williams for good and Gibbs went with Williams for the playoffs. Obviously we'll never know what would have happened if Schroeder started that playoff game against the Bears.. But it's not out of the realm of possibility to think the Redskins would have lost against the Bears if Jay starts as many players have said the team didn't rally around Jay as they did around Doug.

    The Vikes have gone to the NFC Championship game in ‘87, ‘98, ‘01, and ‘09. I think the ‘87 Vikes had the best chance of winning the Superbowl of any of those teams.

    • @anthonybrooks5040
      @anthonybrooks5040 Год назад +2

      I believe the '98 Vikings are one of the best teams never to reach the Super Bowl. A 15-1 juggernaut with a high-powered offense, a nasty defense, and a special teams whose pk was perfect the entire season. Then HC Dan Reeves and his "Dirty Bird" Falcons came to the Metrodome for the NFC championship. To this day, I still can't figure out how the Vikings lost! That team had "Super Bowl" written all over them!

    • @rodolfohilliard1656
      @rodolfohilliard1656 11 месяцев назад +3

      @@anthonybrooks5040 I agree. That '98vikes squad is top in top of teams to not win the Superbowl, in my view. I saw you mentioned the special teams, but dang, they made a kicker who had not missed all season until that game against the falcons.
      Btw, huge Redskins Commanders fan here!!!
