Combat Mission, Monte Cassino. Battle #3 - Colle Sant Angelo

It's taken a while, but here is the third battle in the Combat Mission Fortress Italy Campaign called Monte Cassino. We follow the Polish II Corp in the Third battle in May 1944.

It's good to see you persevering with this Italian campaign, especially after your last battle which was looked like a tough old slog.
For the first half if this battle I was wondering if it would be as harsh as the last one, but you did really well tactically speaking, changing your approach until you found something that worked. And all that artillery, mortars, 25 pounders and all, certainly worked wonders in softening up the enemy.

The campaign is certainly a slog and the campaign isn't getting any easier. I'm currently working through the fourth battle, it's larger than this with more forces, artillery and a larger AO.
I guess the campaign represents the difficulty of the actual battles, but the terrain is disorienting, I get east and west confused several times in the video, and the scale takes time to manage at the platoon level. That's why the video posting is slowing down.

@@MrSirDouble I can understand the confusion with the terrain. After watching the first battle I was trying to find the real world "Phantom Ridge" using Google Earth and cross referencing campaign maps and ended by giving up!

@@Philhamm if your looking for the location on Google maps try 41.499066 13.797240. This is the farm house at the southern end of Phantom Ridge. Snake head ridge is to the east and the road, Via Santa Maria del Albaneta is what the Allies called Cavendish road 👍 They/I attacked from the north to the south.

The terrain indeed makes for WWI like tactics. The queen of the battlefield decides all or loses all!

Yes if you play British forces the key is their artillery everything else is support and finding the enemy.

Well done. Very effective use of artillery. I think arty tactics are the hardest to master in practice. I am enjoying this campaign. Thanks for posting it.
