- The battle of Monte Cassino was a pivotal event in the Italian campaign during the Second World War.
It was one of the bloodiest engagements of the war, and was infamous for its destruction of the monastery.
Monte Cassino eventually resulted in an Allied victory, but it cost 55,000 Allied casualties and the deaths of 2,000 civilians.

My Father fought with the Polish army at Monte Casino and was wounded there, shot by a German sniper. His stories of the hardships they all dealt with there were lost on me, at the time I was too young to understand but, watching the videos available now brought his hardships..hunger, thirst, dust and fear…all much more relatable. Many heroes on that campaign to rid us of the nazi threat!
Poland is a Fake country that was created after world war 1
MIne also, although Polish, having escaped as a forced labourer, he apparently joined up with advancing Allied forces and seems to have been attached to the Northumberland Regiment. Finishing the war in Italy he was asked where he wanted to go and like a lot of Poles, elected to go to the UK instead of Soviet dominated Poland. Her never saw his family again but married a Yorkshire girl and had three sons. Typically he never discussed his experiences and it only emerged after he passed away from hearing about it all from fellow Poles.
@@kristianmerk9733 if Poland is a fake country then you are a Rat 🐀.
Polish are brave people.
The ides of March ! Today nz time ! Not good for many on the Gustav line , 😢 the day the town flattened. And the Germans ( parachute Division ) emerged from the cellars
I met a veteran of Monte Casino whilst living in England. He was Polish or Czech that had been freed from German captivity and trained in Britain. He said that he had lost contact with his brother but, had been reunited with him prior to the final assault on Monte Casino. His brother was killed.
My great uncle lost his life at Monte Casino and was laid to rest in the cemetery he was only 21. 🇬🇧
Very interesting. Thanks for posting ❤
My uncle George was at the Battle of Monte Casino, which he survived, he served as a corporal in the Royal Medical Corps.
🇵🇱🇵🇱🇵🇱 never to be forgotten
Thanks for that.
My father fought at Monte Cassino. He was captured before the second offensive, and was a POW at Stalag IV-B at Muelberg, Germany. He didn't speak about it very much. I only understood how bad the conditions were when I read a couple of books about the battle. He told me that there were Indians and others fighting there. He didn't have a bad word to say about the Germans, who, he said, were fighting for each other, just as we were. They operated on his hand, damages by schrapnel, and patched up other injuries. He said that the Americans were careless in their bombing. Some people will be able to complete the saying, "when the Germans came over the British ducked, etc".
My grandad was there with the Welsh guards...he never spoke about it
German participants who had served in both battles said that it was more brutal than Stalingrad.
My friend and neighbour who helped me into the RM fought here he seemed to have fought every where and had the medals to show fot it he sure had the storys very sad
Brazilian were also there, I think you shouldn't have forgotten to mentioned that !
My father was there but never talked about it
Brazilians were at Monte Castello, After this Battle
My father was there but never talked about it
I used to know a veteran from the British Indian Army who fought here at Casino. Didn't and couldn't say much....
Poland should be mentioned first on that list.
My Grandfather was there in a Tank with the Kiwis. The second battle fell on my fathers 10th birthday.
My Great Uncle was in the Royal Artillery and was one of those deployed to Anzio. The regiment received a mention in despatches for thier collective actions.
Steady the Buffs
Some of those flags are wrong.
It’s supposed to be a British victory, not allied victory
But it wasn't, unless you consider all the international troops to be under British command.
