My Dad fought and was wounded here, he told stories of the horrific fighting, the fear and the sacrifices made by men, some still teenagers. I feel proud and also a great thanks to all who fought for freedom.
Poland liberated Italy with big loses in Bologna, there was a bear fighting on this mountain. Thank you for video
That bear was called Wojtek, my Polish father had the pleasure of meeting him, he said Wojtek stole the soldiers beer and cigarettes!
Rest in peace brothers we salute you!
My Grandmothers youngest brother was killed at Monte Cassino. He had just had his 21st Birthday. Bless them all.😔
I have visited this cemetery and the Abby of Monte Cassino. Following in the footsteps of a friend of my father. Who served in the Italian campaign. Peter Macphee returned after the war. To his native Isle of Skye Scotland. Where my father also was born and brought up. Although my father was not old enough to be called up.Thank you for your service. Its very highly appreciated.

My 3rd cousin, once removed, Lieut. Dan Billany, is commemorated on Panel 5 of one of the war memorials to soldiers who were killed in action, but have no known grave. He was a school teacher and novelist in Kingston upon Hull before the war. He was captured by Rommel's troops in Tobruk, Libya in June 1942 and was sent to a PoW camp in Italy. After the Italian capitulation in September 1943, he and his fellow prisoners were released, but still had to evade German soldiers who tried to round up the former Allied prisoners of war. Dan is not known to have been involved in the Battle of Monte Cassino, but his final resting place is somewhere in Italy. No one heard of him again from January 1944. Sadly, his father, Harry Rusling Billany, never came to terms with his son's death and died of a broken heart in a mental hospital in Somerset in 1950.
I would love to visit the cemetery my great uncle is buried there, it looks lovely and peaceful, definitely on my bucket list.
A good documentary but why did you not mention the Polish troops who finally captured the Abbey?
Because it's a tribute to the Commonwealth who fought and died there. The Polish story needs to be told in a separate documentary. I just visited the Polish cemetery on the backside of the Monte Cassino and it's very beautiful and moving. The Polish monument sums it up beautifully atop Monte Cassino: "For Our Freedom and Yours We Soldiers of Poland Gave Our Soul to God Our Life to the Soil of Italy Our Hearts to Poland"
May I say God Bless the Kiwis in fact all the men of the allies who died there
Read about Polish forces which fought in Monte Casino battle...
And the Indians.
@@Bruce-1956 And the Gurkhas, Kiwis, French, Moroccans, and Aussies.
Poles suffered the greatest losses in percetage term which they could not fill. All of the nations mentioned above were present at the victory parade apart from the Poles - this is how the Anglo-Saxons thanked their most faithful ally.
@@piotrd1189my grandfather from Glasgow was a gunner in the British army he said the polish army were brave and helped take monte cassino

I'm not sure if friends of my Grandfather's are interned here. He told me about Monte Cassino. He was a member of The First Special Service Force. He landed at Anzio and saw action at The Mussolini Canal Monte La Difensa and up the Boot into Rome
Happy that my grandfather isn’t buried there, came close tho, shell that killed his company commander Major Macgruther, almost killed him as well, left a lot friends there 24th Battalion NZEF
My Grandad fought in this battle
They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old.
