    Combat Mission Cold War is set in the tipping-point years of a conflict that gripped the world for 45 years. Between 1979-1982, both the NATO and Soviet Warsaw Pact militaries began the shift away from industrialized warfare of the early 20th century and towards the modern digital battlefield of today. Combat Mission Cold War simulates several “what if” conflict scenarios between US and Soviet forces centered on the strategic Fulda Gap and environs in West Germany.
    Combat Mission is a game developed by Battlefront.com. One of the most realistic tactical simulations ever made, Combat Mission covers a wide variety of military settings, from World War 2 (Normandy, Market Garden, Sicily, Italy and the Eastern Front) to fictional modern conflicts in Syria (Shock Force) and Ukraine (Black Sea).You can find out more about Combat Mission by visiting www.battlefront.com and especially the forums.

    Great content Hapless...especially the inclusion of the FM-100 graphics....Lol...as a member of the OPFOR at Ft Irwin from 89-93 in what was at the time 177th AR BDE aka 32 Guards MRR....I can tell you that a rotational units first fight outta the gate NEVER went this well (and that’s form my experience over 23 rotations)...we usually curb stomped BLUFOR ( and no it wasn’t cheating for all you folks out there who suffered thru NTC...it was our home turf and we were very cohesive armor and infantry BNs). This early time frame must have been doubly tough for BLUFOR as they simply didn’t have the firepower of later (my years) M1/M2 and M3 mix,...this era highlights just how firepower deficient the US mech forces were

  • @rickdeckard7549
    @rickdeckard7549 3 года назад +18

    And lastly...OPFOR scout platoons...out the previous night generally won the surveillance battle early which often led to uneven fights...so KUDOS to you for grabbing the high ground early....as one of the guys on the other end of the AK47 (and yes we carried them and PKMs) we would habitually blind (read KILL) BLUFOR recon hours before the battle even started during the counter recon phase (think beefed up FSE) so you would have had to fight a lot harder for those crests...once the attack got rolling we were encouraged (well doctrinally trained at the OPFOR Academy) to “smother” BLUFOR with tempo....

      That paragraph you wrote is so awesome, I had to re-read it a couple times. Red Army recce was generally considered excellent (if not the best), right? Being literal OPFOR means you are going to be a goldmine of info for this title. I'm going to need to remember you for future questions.

    Sending the Cobras to scout was a particularly inspired move, and not one I would have thought of. Thanks for once again illustrating why the gamey "zone" mechanic should often be ignored in favor of good positioning.

    Great job.. this scenario was intended to illustrate the aggressiveness that OPFOR often brings to the fight. You did an excellent job blunting their spear and your reverse slope LAW defense was inspired.

    Nutty. I went hasty and misunderstood what the "scaled down map" thing meant and had the wrong preliminary plan in my head lol also totally wasn't expecting to take a fight in my deployment zone. Made me feel I was doing something wrong, though I guess that's the point.

    • @battleshipfreez2344

    Nice job! It interesting to see how you exploited the minor changes in elevation to gain an advantage over the BMPs and T-72s, especially on such an open map. Also, heads up, the second Decision Point is bugged and will only let you choose the holding action option and not the counter-attack.

  • @rickdeckard7549

    It would be nice if they modeled smoke generators on the tanks and or from M113 smoke platoon as these were widely employed while I was at NTC in the 89~92 timeframe...the smoke dispensers or mortar delivered smoke does NOT do justice to just how much smoke was on the field every day! If we could post photos I’d probably be able to scrounge up some funny shots I took back in the day...

    Very well edited as always. I actually did fairly well on this mission, only losing one M150, half a squad of infantry and an M60. Another was immobilized though and not available for the next mission. NTC is sadistic at times!

  • @johnleney9541

    Really enjoyed this. Played the scenario this afternoon before finding the vid. I tried to get guys up the hill, but they were spotted and killed. Also I pressed the attack for too long before reverting to the reverse slope defence and so lost some vehicles needlessly. Once the reinforcements turned up, things stabilised, and we picked off the recklessly advancing OPFOR vehicles regularly. Annoyingly, both my CAS missions ended with aircraft destroyed for no profit. Towards the end the AI and I entered a stalemate phase with our remaining AFVs lying either side of a ridge just outside my deployment zone. With a few turns left, I launched a mass charge over the ridge in the hope that the remaining BMPs and T72 would target the APCs and allow my two M60s to pick them off. Unsurprisingly that failed, and the ceasefire revealed a draw.

  • @theodorossynkellos8953
    @theodorossynkellos8953 3 года назад +5

    Nicely done; Soviet doctrine had plenty right on the power of reverse slope defense. Ironically the lesson I had to learn playing as the Americans was the same one the Iraqis didn't learn quick enough, and thus gave a bad name to reverse slope defense: if you're facing beast-mode tanks, you better make that reverse slope arrangement POINT BLANK. No sense setting it more than a klick out when you're facing M1A1s with thermals, or T-64Bs with terrifying levels of turret armor.
    I'm really enjoying getting to grips with the new tactical environment. It feels very WW2 in that your tanks need to spend all their time with the commander hanging out of the turret, and you need to guess right on the enemy's intentions if you're going to scoop up the all-important hull down positions you need. On the other hand, BRDMs in tree-lines and squad level RPG allocation make you much more paranoid than you would be if you were doing the same in a Panther.

    Your M150's seem very competent compared to mine. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but mine seem to have a very hard time spotting targets / getting a shot off before they get creamed by enemy cannons and/or ATGMs.

    Also, when using ATGM teams, split them up, don't send the whole squad to a spot where a 2 man team will do. To find the controls to do that, select the team and look under the "A" or "Admin" tab on the unit control panel. With the entire squad combined, you can select "AT Team" and the game will detach a 2 man AT team. You can also reconstitute the groups. For example if you start with 1st Squad Team A a Team B and sometimes Team C and D, move them next to eachother, then go to the same Admin tab, and select "Combine Group", and you'll be able to have the entire squad together. This will depend on which country you're controlling, what time period (it works for WW2 as well) AND what kind of squad it is.

    Man, this may be a Kobayashi Maru-type trick on the part of training establishment - HAHA, YOUR HASTY ATTACK IS ACTUALLY A HASTY DEFENSE, think on your feet - but as a non-military dude playing it, I was very annoyed by this mission, esp. when the solution I eventually found workable turned out to be "turtle in your deployment zone, shoot anyone going over the crest"

      @@usuallyhapless9481 I think the most embarrassing thing to ever happen to me in any Combat Mission Game or match I’ve ever played occurred in a recent battle where my reinforcements plopped onto the map (an entire Soviet motor rifle company with a platoon+ of armor and shilkas) in front of some M113s and M60s, and immediately tore them to shreds. But, immediately afterwards in less than 2 minutes, a single Tow M113 variant killed 3 BTRs and BRDMs and a shilka. My guys couldn’t even spot it, they’d try to engage it and promptly die - to the shittiest mechanized vehicle ever invented no less.

      There are a few minor things that are going to be fixed in an upcoming patch pretty soon, then there is Slitherine's PBEM system that will be added when the Steam version comes out in a few months; further modules are off in the future.
      Basically, if you like the setting and you like CM then it's worth it right away... if you would rather wait a little while until it comes to Steam then you can avoid manual patching and requesting a steam key... if you think US and Soviet forces alone aren't enough then wait for the first module.
