Why Your iPhone Gets Darker In The Sun

- If you’ve ever used your iPhone on a beach, at a pool, or in a park, you may’ve noticed the screen slowly dim until it becomes almost unreadable. So why does this happen?
Well, it has to do with the direct sunlight making the device too hot. And while there are a variety of things that can heat up your iPhone. - Наука
They advertise 2000 nits outdoors but really only a short while until it overheats then have to turn it down
Yeah but nearly nobody mentions this in reviews on 13 pro max it was insane a bit sun and you can't see anything
Lol and this shows again, that apple products are overrated 😂. For the price u pay, there should be much better cooling. What's the point of 2000 nits for short times 😂
@@User05199 Samsung does exacatly the same. Used a S24 Ultra for about 2 months brightness is about the same under same conditions. Also massiv brightness drop on Samsung
This explains why I always have to find shade to see my blank screen. I’ve actually had another iPhone that went to max brightness in direct sunlight
Yeah because shade reduces heat 🤣
@@ExciYT shade helps to see the screen better, to crank the brightness all the way up.. which defeated the whole point of the dimming feature
@@ExciYTwhy is that funny?
@@Donut-jm6by He either doesent get it twice or is trolling. He means its useless to bring an overheated iPhone to the shade, because shade will not reduce the heat of the air around it. Which is semi-true. What he doesnt get: OP was talking about the difference of OLED and the old screens, bringing a new iPhone to the shade to see the blank dimmed screen is so its darker, not colder.
Bro its common sense
simple: heat
Thanks!
Bro this channel is for 8 year olds that don’t know how to use common sense 😂
@@Jeagletboard what?? This is Apple explained and some things in the videos 8 year olds don’t know
@@sarahshihat4045 true, I have only watched a few videos on this channel that were pretty much common sense, so I could be wrong for his other detailed videos. I’m sorry
@@Jeagletboard it’s fine
As someone who FaceTimes my friend while playing video games outside on a sunny day, I feel attacked.
LOL
bro hates his phone
Bro got the wombo combo
Bro, did you ran out of ideas for your channel
Nah I’ve actually always wondered this question
nah
What idea suggestions do you have?
Are you mad that a channel called "Apple Explained" is explaining something about an Apple product?
Honestly, that's an understatement. I believe there are somethings that we never thought of before. And sometimes it's hard to look for it.
I thought it got brighter because I made his day
lol
Who’s day?
Lol
Haha
No
I have noticed this my iPhone gets so dim and lags nice to finally have a good explanation
iphones are annoying
@@trustee1108 yeah, stupid devices. What is the point of putting the powerful chipsets if the screen dims itself like crazy while playing games and stuff
@@tullo5564 exactly my point. years back, I used an iphone x and I could not use it outdoors alot because of this screen dimming issue. I also could not play all games well. now am happily using a galaxy device which addressed all those issues.
Like what’s the point of higher brightness if the phone gets darker in sunlight
true
Get a white phone case to reflect the sun heat, black aborbs the most from the sun heat, next to green
This used to happen on my 6 plus after 5 years of usage but doesn’t on my 14 pro max. It actually brightens up a lot
Pro here
Maybe it’s because it has better thermal thingies? I have 14 pro and i noticed it does dim the display
@@kevinsmithfox4614 could be idk. The biggest issue I have with new phone is battery degradation. Already at 89% after 1 year 5 months. My 6 plus was at this point after 4 years
My iPhone 15 heats up like oven in direct sunlight 😅
Every pro dims I had 11 pro until 15 pro max every device does this
S24 ultra also
Wanted to know this for the longest thanks!!
Gg, you’re first

Not just iPhones even my LG G3 gets darker in the sun. Even worse it reduces the birghtness at its own from 100 to 90 due to overheating which is sometimes a safety barrier to prevent further damages. But on the iPhone side it also dims itself even if it's not overheating like being said on the video, FYI i never owned an iPhone before but it seems like i have been experiencing the same thing to my phone too.
Any phone with an OLED screen should be similarly affected.
@@megapangolin1093 Yes but there are 2 factors to consider. The Operating system and the brightness nits. If your OS automatically adjusts your brightness then it will be darker by itself. But if the nits are low then you'll get a lower brightness even if you set it to 100.
I use my 2 LG phones at 0 brightness on indoors and they are pretty fully usable, i set it to 30 if i am on outdoors as i need more brightness on outdoors. Man i just cannot believe that LG Made the brightest displays even on 0 percent they remain usable on indoors. But on outdoors you need more brightness.
I love this channel. Very informative actually. People with no channel or knowledge need to go somewhere else if they don’t like it.
Ideas are the one thing that prevents RUclipsrs from making content.
Idea for new animation: That one fly that keeps landing on you when you’re trying to sleep
not relevant???
@@skulldude101 it's a joke but i see your point.
@@skulldude101next video idea: why is windows 11 so controversial?
😂😂
I have an iPhone 13 and on some really bright days I cannot see or read what's on the display despite being at maximum brightness, which can be annoying.
Thank you, very clear and helpful to know this. Shame that it takes 5 years of iPhone ownership for me to find this out, thought it was bad settings on display brightness. Such a shame that Apple dont tell buyers this, it might save a bit of heartache, worry and fear (my iphones dying, and I cant afford a mortgage)...
Helpful video thanks
Informative Video!
Thanks I have been wondering why my iPhone dims in the cool 😂 very helpful 👍
thanks always wanted to know this
Sometimes I wonder what my phone is doing outside, I take it out of my pocket, and it goes dim after like two minutes of use.
I could listen to the background music all day long. 😊
It’s called “piano moment” and there’s a 30 minute version on RUclips where you can just listen to the music
@@laurenslee9134 thank you so much! 😊
@@NinPossible you’re welcome! I love the music too.
Is there a way to disable that? It gets pretty annoying when your using your phone or playing games when the brightness suddenly goes dim.
no
Thanks!
can you explain why the iPad 10th generation does not support the Apple Pencil 2nd gen?
Apple doesn’t want you to
Tandem OLED should do some load balancing for this scenario.
nice video. i learned this last year
The video is meant for new apple users anyway 😂 if yan already know about this, then Good for you
they have auto brightness features as well
Great video! I didn't know iPhones can overheat. Now why does the screen turn black when I press one of the buttons on the side? Also I just realized that touching on an app opens that app. Apple doesn't mention that on their website.
Up next - Why your iPhone rings when someone calls you…
Does it get darker in the sun 🌞, even in maximum brightness 🔆?
Are u sick bro ? or is the power out and ur using an iPhone mic ?
But its so annoying because sometimes I don't care about heat and need that extra oomph from the brightness to see whats happening.
Apple explained next : why does Apple explained exits ?
Even in bright light turning up the brightness to 100 still feels like only 80 (once it was 70 and the bar was all the way up WTF)
When are you going to do live streams again?
1:17 This is why I don’t like OLEDs. Long live LCDs!
Thanks❤
Thanks nice topic… it happened with me recently
Same thing happens when it gets brighter under the direct sun
"You sure about that?"
Apple users really making me wonder how unknowledgeable they are for needing such a video💀
My gigachad android brightens up because it knows I need to see my display even in sunlight. Meanwhile iphone lowers its brightness, preventing the user from using the phone lmao
this definitely came after that one tiktok posted abt being at the beach 😭
You better hire me for content idea before you make next video that goes like "Why you're broke if you dont own an apple product"
Nice to know !
The reason why I bought S24 Ultra because it has the brightest screen on a smartphone but I work outdoors it's always dimmer to the point I can't see what's on the display. There are times I'm dipping my phone on the ice chest to get a brighter image
How bright is the display?
First interesting video of yours in years
Yes
girl i’ve always had this question lmaoo
I remember one time I used my 2017 MacBook Pro in direct sunlight one time. Even with the fans on fully, it was hot af
Here are some more ideas you can milk:
- Why are touch typing keys different in Japan
- Why doesn’t Mac have right click
- Why does iPhone send an overheat message
- Why is there no Basic MacBook model and only Pro and Air
let bro exist lol. damn
Aksddkussdgyfygukasduyfkg
@@masterdoge17 This did not need a video.
These are good suggestions
"Why does iPhone send an over heat message"
Because it's overheating???
But other RUclips reviewers say otherwise that it’s very bright and they have use it to read or play games outdoors for extended period of time. So either they are lying or they aren’t?
I already knew this but still I watched it
I know that this seems like basic knowledge to us tech nerds. But this channel is useful, some people don't know those info and can help the a lot to save their devices. So stop hating
Yep
But why this never happened with any samsung or other android phones. They still can perform at peak performance in direct sunlight ? Why only apple ?
0:40 it can also just shut down too :)
What is the song?
Doesn’t it just appear darker because the sun is brighter than your phone screen? A phone screen is a light emitter and is just weaker than the sun so it just becomes darker.
Also, if it is to prevent overheating, then why do features such as adaptive brightness exist? Isn’t the entire point of adaptive brightness to adjust to the brightness of outdoors?
Well, mine gets darker while it is just in front of the car's AC vents so it is difficult to see Waze's map. It is not heat in this case because AC is running.
Thankss. Now i know.. I thought the phone sensors has been damaged or not functioning.
Just like your skin gets tan, no differences here
I hope that this is a joke
Or a logical reason: older phones are equipped with low nits of brightness, mine has no problem in the sun
It's a feature
I turned off auto brightness off, shut it off turn it on?
My phone: iphone12 P.M
do people not realize that it’s because the sourounding light is much brighter?
It’s a combination of that and what he said about heat
i thought it was just because our eyes get used to the higher brightness all around us, therefore we would perceive the phone brightness as lower than what it actually is. Learned something new!
I figured this was the reason
Hello darkness, iPhone's friend.
I come to see it once again.
Because a heat softly creeping
Left my phone weeping,
And the image that was burned into it's OLED pane,
Still remains
It's all sound science.
Multi-apping gig apps dims your screen to. I've heard.
Thank u now i know
That’s why my screen keeps getting darker… there’s no ac it’s in direct sunlight and I’m playing games while charging
This was actually informative, I genuinely thought that the sun just makes it harder to see the phone but the fact that it’s deliberate is kind of interesting.
It does. My android goes to higher than max brightness for about a minute in the sun then dims the screen.
I was on a call, playing games, in sunlight through glass, lagging, charging, full brightness, and no ac.
Oh, I just thought it was getting a tan
Next video: why Siri can’t listen to you and why Siri continues to play music when you asked Siri to stop and why Siri can’t answer/accomplish multiple things asked/tasked (like 2 questions asked or turn off WiFi & Bluetooth)
Even I get darker in the sun 😂
Holy shit I have the iPhone 12 Pro Max and it is not sun friendly at all, overheats very quickly and dims the screen every time I charge it
Why only Apple has this issue? Why other phones do NOT have issues with heating?
meanwhile my 7 year old android maintains 600 nits (max brightness) even when the ambient temperature is over 40°C while my phone shuts down mobile data, GPS and other stuff to prevent overheating (above 50°C). 🤣
No no why does it get HOT, not even in direct sun maybe a warm/hot environment.
(Sometimes with no or least use.)
How come android doesn’t have this problem then.
my friend was doing a tiktok live in the direct sun while charging his phone wirelessly. it burst
Do this for black berry
Bro I manually do that I turn down my brightness to like the middle even in sunlight to prevent burn in and any heat in the first place
Gonna burn the kangaroo emoji on my iphone 12 mini
Video idea: Why Do iPhones Have Cameras?
Now I need a brighter iPhone to upgrade
Iphone gets darker when flying dji drone you cant see where you are 💀
The real question is: Why my iPhone 8 last longer while using GPS and all kind of "heavy" app, while my girlfriends iPhone 12 gets dark in a minute while she is in the main menu 😂similar with my friends iPhone 14. Are iPhones getting worse?
lol
If only there was a way to cool the device without relying on throttling the user experience (there is such thing as fans that don't spin)
I remember I accidently left my Iphone 12 in a black car on a sunny day with the screen facing directly at the sun for around 2 hours (it was hotter than a stove) so I dumped ice all over it and it melted quickly)
I just asked myself that exact thing this morning, slightly creepy… 😁
Next video - “Why the iPhone shuts down when the battery dies”.
My phone is hot just watching this video
That makes sense I was wondering why my IPhone 13 does that? 🤔
no, it is because max brightness is not strong enough compared to the sun
Samsung Phones also have the Same Problem
Blud ran out of ideas😂
Let me save you some time it'll get to hot from the brightness 😁
Moro no Brasil, onde no verão o sol é tenso. Nunca tive problema com tela escura no iPhone…
