Severely Rusted Steel Wheel - Perfect Wheel Restoration

- For this weeks video ive decided to get back to basics before making a start on the more complex projects ive got lined up including another big project ;)
So this time i decided to restore a super rusty spare wheel i had lying around the yard, As you can see it has definitely seen better days and is in dire need of being rescued, Really Random Channel to the rescue!
So the first thing i done was to get it up on the work bench and give it a goon inspection to make sure there are no cracks or major dents that would stop me restoring it, as you can tell the wheel checked out just fine and i could crack on with removing the tyre or tire if you prefer ;)
The tyre ware removed on my tyre changing machine, first the valve was removed then the bead was broken with the bead breaker and then mounted onto the machine and the tyre gets levered over the shoe and the machine rotated to lift the tyre up and over the rim and voila one removed tyre.
Once i had the tyre off and disposed of the valve was removed from the rim, the only way to remove these valves is by cutting them out so thats what i did, a sharp Stanley made short work of it... and yes there were a few spiders hiding in that web around the valve neck!
the wheel is then given a thorough scrubbing and pressure washing with APC and water, this removed all of the green mildew, spider webs and any loose rust as well as dissolving any rogue grease and grime.
Once dry the now clean rim was loaded into the media/sand blaster and given a 100 psi scrubbing to remove all traces of rust. This leaves the wheel nice clean but with lots of little pits where the rust had been eating into the steel so this will be addressed in the next step.
U-pol body filler is used to fill in the heavy pitting that the rust caused and after sanding leaves me with a nice smooth surface ready for some high build primer to remove any last imperfections that the filler may have missed.
I hung and panel wiped the rim in preparation for the next stage which is etch priming the bare steel so that the high build 2k has a base to grip onto. Once this is applied and cured i head back to the bench to wet flat the primer back to a perfectly level surface, This is where the super glossy finish is created.
After i cleaned the wheel thoroughly to remove all sanding residue, i mixed up some 2k Gloss black and gave the wheel 3 coats to achieve full coverage and minimum thickness to avoid chipping on the edges when tyre fitting or bolting to the car. After this was cured it was simply a case of fitting a new tyre, new valve inflating and standing back to admire my work and be satisfied in the knowledge i fought the battle against rust and triumphed once more!
Thank you for watching and i hope to see you in the next video :)

George's appearance at 6:20 😂 then he falls back 💀😭😂
If that wheel had feelings it would probably be crying out of joy right now😀
Goddddddd😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
or screaming of unbearable pain while being sandblasted and sprayed with etchant
This is the first restoration video where I have been happy(!) learning!
Glad to hear that, thanks :)
That was actually very satisfying to watch! Especially the sandblasting. Thank you!
One word, WOW….My rims were watching this and they have not stopped crying.
I enjoyed this video immensely!
You kinda see old wheels like that just stacked up to rot and to see how it’s possible to restore them to brand new is inspiring.
Thank you for sharing.
Thank you, Im very glad you enjoyed it :)
It’s not hard to do the same exact thing this person did with a wire brush sand paper wire wheel and 20 bucks in spray paint
Awesome job can’t believe it’s the same wheel
Lovely restoration.
I could bring you my old '93 Frontera if you want, it'll keep you in content for a long time!
I'd want it back after though!
Beautiful job. Turned out great. Helpful. And THANK YOU for not putting electronic dance music on while you showed your repair (like the 7 million other wheel repair videos on youtube.)
The sounds were really helpful. You could tell when he put the wheel on the table, because you could hear it. Nice use of sound! So glad you didn't ruin all the bonks and clicks by trying to SAY WHAT YOU ARE DOING.
I do not like this, I LOVE this. Base on how and what you used to do it, its obvious that you are an experienced professional. The time and resources that you spent on this could easily worth a full set of four new ones, or more. The fact that you did this shows how much you appreciate your material, your job and you must be really proud of the result. For that, i salute you.
Thank you so much for your kind comment, It means a lot, Thank you :)
Excelente video, no hubo necesidad de explicación, simple, efectivo y muy claro, saludos desde México
When first setting the bead of a tire always let the air all the way back out before filling it to the proper PSI. It lets everything settle and helps a great deal with balancing the tire.
Justin Fisher what? Letting air out then airing back up has nothing to do with letting the tire settle. Your federal courgias always balance like shit and your mastercraft are the best at balancing. It just depends on the tire and where the heavy spots are on the wheel. If you get cheap shit tires then they’ll balance like shit, I’ve had them before, they were amp tires.
Thank you for always putting in the effort to get great shots. Your videos are always great and the attention to detail is wonderful.
Thank you very much for your kind comment its nice to know all my effort is appreciated :)
Excellent excellent work. Love the fact you're restoring and reusing. If it were me because I don't have a shop, I'd just buy a new set. I'll send your my old rusted steelies.
what a good job .. congratulations..but the best thing is when George enters the scene !!! 😂😂😂😂
Thank you, Im glad you liked it :)
Just bought an old set of steel rims for my winter tires from the junk yard, thanks for the tips.

Thank you very much, Nice to see you again btw :) oh and dont worry my format isn't going to change anytime soon.
@@RRCRestoration.Sorry I've been in China on a work project. They have plenty of machinery that could do with your attention 😂😂
magnifique vidéo, bon travaiil, c'est un plaisir !!!!
I follow your video on how to piant a wheel my wheels looks brandnew your video helps me fix my old rusty wheels
Another brilliant video, captivating to watch
I watch this as if it was a 🎥,great job!
Devi's advocate question here but would new rims be far cheaper once you consider all the time and effort?
Some people have the time but not the money. I respect videos like this. But you’re right.
the purpose of the video isn’t to save time or money it’s entertainment
Enjoyed the vid. Great result!
Glad to see some more videos like the originals!
Thank you im glad you enjoyed it :)
damnnnn... what an amazing transformation!!! from litter to glitter!!!
Thank you :)
outstanding!
quick tip to make old tires look like new: mix 50/50 dawn dish soap and water, wipe it on the tire with a cloth and let it dry, repeat, then rinse and dry with a dry cloth
Thanks for the tip :)
Laughed a lot harder at George's appearance than I should have. Lovely cameo.
Haha im glad that me and George could entertain you :)
Good Clean
Watching sandblasting is satisfying! 😲😲😲😲😁👍😉
Glad you enjoyed it :)
Tysytube has an 18 min compilation sandblast video
@@DaleDix Yeah!
That was like Christmas day 2 me. 😊😊👍
Hello a perfect Video and a great work. From Germany 🇩🇪 👋👋👋Kai
Thank you very much :)
Sí
I oftenly forgot to click the thumbs up button since I was so amaze by your job. Everything was done perfectly... keep posting buddy...
Thank you very much :)
@@RRCRestoration youre most welcome
Interesting to see, up-close, the tyre removal and fitting - I always wondered how damage to the rim was avoided.... Now it's clear!!
Im glad you enjoyed it :)
Have you ever done a walk through of your shed/sheds. Seems like you have pretty much all that is req in tools and equipment to do anything. Love you to share and maybe other subscribers would too. Ideal time now you are narrating your vids . Cheers Jock. Greetings from Perth West Australia
Very good video!
Thank you very much :)
Thanks for good content
Perfect!!! 👍🏼
Nicely done as usual. Step One: Get Tire Machine or take it to a shop to get the tire dismounted/mounted. So no balancer then?
Look forward to the next project. Complex sounds good..still hoping for a Full Body Off Car/Truck Restoration or maybe an ex-military prop aircraft! :-)
Cheers!
Hi, Unfortunately i dont have a balancer its on the list of stuff i'd really like to get at some point though. Thanks for leaving a comment :)
nice work when its done right no cutting corners
Great job! Keep it up!!
That's what a spare tire should look like
Thank you :)
Me: No way I'm gonna watch a tire restoration.
Also me: Can't believe I just watched a tire restoration and enjoyed it. :)
Great job as always, even if it was just a "tired wore out rim". :)
Hi, Im really glad you enjoyed it :)
The best work!
George hit that Colombian bam bam
Great video......I'm probably going to just go the rustoleum route with mine....it rides under the bed of my truck and gets subjected to salt spray from the crap our DOT puts on the roads in the wintertime. If I were restoring a classic car- THIS would be the method I'd use, lol.
I like how you can eyeball the 3 part paint mixtures!
Years and years or practice ;)
Very detailed job!
Crikey, 80 psi 😮 Old snorty seems to enjoy his work with the Bolivian marching powder 🤪
Nicely done mate .
Thank you very much, Nice to see you again
Nice job✌
Thanks
He even added clear coat👍👌
Funny you are showing a restoration of a tire rim. I just had to do four of mine. Mine were a bit more.difficult because there is a pressed in chrome trim and I could not take it off. Thanks for sharing. Nice job.
where are the rest of the 3 tires? Great result Bro and video
Theres only one as its a spare wheel.
@@RRCRestoration I got owned pretty bad :(. Keep on those videos , love them all.
Красота! И результат и процесс. Шедевр просто. На машину поставят, а диск восьмеркой. Во досады то будет. Вы б чё доброе восстановили. А то поди выкрасили и выбросили.
Great work, makes with chrome wheel.
Great video! I thoroughly enjoy watching your skills with the painting process!
Thank you, Glad you enjoy it :)
Very nice 👍🎉gob❤
I can smell the citrus from here.
Perfect!!!
What was the purpose of putting on the filler? It could have just been sanded. Some of the filler got into the gab and then it looked inconsistent.
And I didn't get unsubscribed!!! AH-mazing
I run the car maintenance RUclips channel in Korea. I'm always learning such a great ideas on your channel. I hope we have a chance to be together. Thank you.
Great job I’m just wandering how much a restoration like that would cost? And usually after how many miles my will need this?
excellent❗️
I lost it when george came to town😂😂

Great job pal
That shot where the camera was mounted on the bead breaker made me chuckle. :-P Thanks for the video! :-)
Thank you im glad you enjoyed it :)
Perfekt
where did you pick up those wheels ?
from the bottom of the lake ? :D
Haha you'd be forgiven for thinking so haha
Was my first idea too...
If there were no rim in it, it could also been on the outside of a tug boat...
:-D
ОТЛИЧНАЯ РАБОТА👍👍
My man out here bondoeing the rims 😂😂
Its the only way to smooth out the rust pits without structurally weakening the wheel by grinding it down.
I know I just never saw anyone using bondo on wheels :P
Hi bro 👋👋👋 good to see you 🤝🤝🤝 very good restoration wheel disk 👍👍👍
Nice to see you, Glad you liked it :)
Great job sir 👍
Thank you :)
That is a lovely job, you don't say what grit the wet & dry is not what's in the 3rd tin, I'm assuming it's paint thinners &?.
Only thought I had was to put a little lube on the valve before fitting as I think it would help seat easier.👏👏
Great vid, cool camera angles. Feel like doing four more wheels? 🤔
Этот диск - объект культурного наследия из особо ценных пород металла?
Ниппель конечно можно было и покороче поставить например TR313.
I'm on board with reusing where possible, but man, for the time, money and labor spent doing all this you could have just bought a brand new set of all 4 steelies.
VERY GOOD VDO FROM CANADA
Thank you :)
Slick job man
Thank you :)
Да на нём ещё сезон можно откататься))
Very nice thanks
Love these wheels
After you wet sand the primer, which product or chemical do you use to clean the dust off? Before applying base coat.
That's all good and well when one has that kind of equipment but if one like me doesn't any easier way of restoring wheel rim??
What blasting media are you using?
Fantastic video! Top-notch quality, as always.
And then there´s peopel who give a tacky job on more expensive wheels... love your work
and by the away
Im a fan of george .
I enjoyed that! Would love to see you restore al alloy wheel though.
Glad you liked it :) Im working on it my E46 alloy rims need a bit of restoration ;)
@@RRCRestoration Brilliant! I've got a set of scabby alloys that need a refurb but my local place want £80/corner. I fancy having a go myself, need some inspiration! :)
It's magic...!!
A REAL PRO'S VIDEO!!! Not able to remove tire. Will have to do with tire still on car. What is a good mixture or product to clean rust and paint off wheel w/o hurting rubber? Also, what is the primer mixture you used? Can you advise the best way to clean and paint while wheel is still on car? Would appreciate greatly.
Now that is a nice job :)
Thank you :)
