People often underestimate the power of silent presence. There is an energy of strength that we give to others just by our willingness to be there. These are great tips especially for those who struggle to empathize with grief. Thank you for sharing this necessary content 🙏🏽

Yes, that silent presence is powerful. Just the act of hanging in there and being with a person is powerful.

What you mention on empathy is the basis of communication and being able to understand human behavior. One can empathize with even the most horrible life players, enough to render understanding on their motivation in life. That is, not to be confused with agreement or allowance of bad behaviors, but an understanding which can offset anger and position oneself to positively overcome the misfortunes brought upon by those less aware of themselves, allowing forgiveness. My readings and experiences as an actor has given me experiences demonstrating the absolute power of empathy. Thanks again Alex, your words and manner is very healing!

A few years ago I was so empathetic I could connect in no-time with others, but the Problem was I overemphasized and that was tearing me down and so I stopped being empathetic and lost many friends. Now I want reclaim that ability and this time set up emotional boundaries.

I'm sorry for your loss. It mustve been really difficult accepting it. I felt the same when my grandpa passed away, I was with him in his final days and I'm glad i was with him during those days. Initially I somewhat blamed myself for not being helpful for him, but its just the journey towards acceptance. Gradually one realises that we couldn't have changed the situation and accept that fact...
Hope I can be of some help❤
I think (and have been told) that I lack empathy, and I just am useless when someone shares their problems. I want to change that, i want to learn how to empathize

This is a truly honorable tribute! Thank you for sharing. As a therapist, I can at times be hyper-empathetic and need to be very careful what I read or what I watch so that I can be emotionally available for the real people with whom I interact. Still, a good story or movie that's just emotional enough helps me remain aware of my changing sensitivities so I can process through my own stuff and vicarious burdens, which allows me to be at my best for the next person. Not always done perfectly, of course! Again, thank you for this.

Thank you Alex, sorry for your loss. I have been working on this for over 5 years. When i became sober and clean from heroine and coke, I had to take accountability for all of the pain I caused my family and friends watching me self destruct. Empathy hit me first when I had a dream about my son doing what I was doing to my mom with my overdose I had and that helped me get clean. Thanks for taking the time to teach us this stuff.

I don't have a friends here my parents far away. But he just put me in danger mentally more put fire if I open how I feel
If I try spending time in a household he fallow behind me back and telling me what to do and everything I do make sounds like wrong. And then I got so angry and frustrated he told me I have an anger issues. So never really finished communicating and let it out how I feel feeling stuck.

Thanks for sharing. I'm trying to understand empathy and still have some questions. First I would say.. if my dad passed away I would also feel very sad, though I know the Bible says not to grieve as those who have no hope. I would want to rest assured my dad is in heaven because he believed in Jesus. (1 question below/ 1 thought)
    1. What if two people are looking for empathy at the same time? It seems like this happens where one person is feeling bad about something and in that process they don't give empathy to another person. Like whose draw for empathy wins?
    2. I think that some people could be offended if you told them your dad died and they were like... aww my dog died a few years ago too. (Any thoughts on this?)

But what if your spouse feels that you have many horrible traits that are causing their unhappiness? Must you agree with their view in order to have empathy? What if you don’t agree? Does that mean you lack empathy?

So I have a question? I’m in college and I’ll take him human services associate degree. And one of my classes my teacher states that he does not agree that empathy is about connection he states that you can’t connect with everybody and you won’t be able to connect with all their good and bad presents. So my question is which I believe you answered in the video isn’t empathy all about connecting good bad to understand a person to walk a mile in their shoes and not just one person with many clients that come before you?

    • @alexanderlyon
      @alexanderlyon  2 года назад +1

Hi, Meechi. I think I almost understand your question. It sounds like you are coming to the topic from the standpoint of being a professional who helps people in need. I think at least part of what your teacher is saying is correct. I don't think it's a good idea (or practical idea) to attempt to connect with everybody. That would be exhausting and you'd likely burnout very quickly. One of the key things that counselors, social workers, etc. have to look out for is managing boundaries so that they don't get overwhelmed. Many people are drawn to human services and similar areas of work because they naturally care about people already. It really is a balance. If you find it easy to put yourself in other people's shoes and understand them, then you'll have to manage your emotional boundaries more. If you find it very difficult to put yourself in other's shoes (and don't, therefore, care for people appropriately), then you should develop your empathy more. I'm concerned that I'm not answering exactly what you asked but those are some additional thoughts that may contribute to the conversation you had with your teacher.

It sounds to me that you lack empathy. True empathy is understanding people who DON'T think like you. For example a lot of men have no clue what women want in a man and a lot of women have no clue to what a man wants in a woman. The reason for this is because both men and women lack empathy for the opposite gender. Just like someone with a dominant personality doesn't understand the joy someone with a submissive personality feels when they are dominated. True empathy is realizing that your internal experiences can be different from others. It's realizing that just because a situation would make you feel sad that doesn't mean that it won't make someone else happy.

I think crying is our purest form of empathy.
Boys are taught not to cry, so we stop doing it.
We're told to stop crying about our own pain and the pain of others, often animals, when we're little. So we eventually stop crying about the pain of others unless they die. We are taught to bury our empathy.

Good point. Many communication skills can be weaponized with bad outcomes. It's why I also care about ethics in communication so much.

Jesus was not very empathetic, nature is not empathetic, we tell our kids not to talk to strangers because children relate primarily through feeling which can allow predators to take advantage so empathy at all costs seems to be very popular today but empathy can be an excuse to fail to take action to help people out of their pain. Empathy is giving a homeless person a blanket or buying a shopping cart when they need help with addiction....so empathy by itself has no long-term benefit to human relationships.
