  • Part 3 of a 3-part verse-by-verse study of Mosiah 29 through Alma 4, which recounts the establishment of the reign of the judges and the accounts of Nehor and Amlici. Part 3 covers Alma 2-4 and examines the story of Amlici, parallels to the War in Heaven, the Lamanite curse, the wickedness of the Church, and Alma the Younger's choice to sacrifice one kingdom in order to build another. “Righteous dominion is still dominion...” Alma did not step down so he would have more time to preach, he did it to send a message. I am going to make a study of that message. thxs

      There's definitely a balance that righteous leaders need to make between exercising leadership/authority ("dominion," if you will) and helping their "subjects" become responsible "agents unto themselves." Neither party can abdicate their responsibility in ensuring that this growth in independence occurs.

    I was in a college history class many years ago when the professor said, I'm paraphrasing her (she had a doctorate in Indian studies, specifically the tribes of Montana) the Indians called themselves red men, bc red was the symbol of courage. It then occurred to me, when they were saying they were redskins, or red men, they were referring to their inner character, they were red or courageous men. In looking at the meaning of colors to native peoples could it also be said that a dark skin, or a black skin, was someone who led a physical (rather than spiritual) life?
    The colors and symbolism of the Medicine Wheel also represent the four qualities of a balanced life:
    The Spiritual life is represented by the color red
    Emotional life is represented by yellow
    The Physical life is represented by black
    The Intellect is represented by white

      I love this! There is so much of native culture that I wish I knew--I'm sure it's full of fascinating insights like the one you shared. Such a beautiful parallel to the verse in Luke 2 about Jesus growing in "wisdom, and in stature, and in favor with God and man." Thank you for enlightening me!

    Thanks so much for explaining the curse vs. the mark! I've had a hard time understanding that concept even when studying great explanations from others. But something about the way you explained it seemed to click for me better. It feels true!

    • @Unshaken
      @Unshaken  4 года назад +3

      I'm so glad it was helpful. Definitely a tricky subject, and there are other helpful ways to look at it as well (some even wondering if the mark was even literal at all, but more figurative and metaphoric instead), but it's helped me to keep them separate in my head, as the Book of Mormon writers seemed to be doing. Thanks for tuning in!

You are hands down, the best gospel teacher I've ever listened to. My goodness you are a wonderful teacher, I’ve been Baptised 13 years, read the Book of Mormon quite a lot, I’m so glad you cleared up the ‘curse the mark’. We are all Gods children, he isn’t bothered what skin colour we have or how we look. He is interest in how we want to be like him. He try’s constantly to teach us in simple ways, so we don’t miss understand. Like our own parents teach us not to run into the road because they don’t want us to get run over, they don’t want us to suffer, unnecessarily, neither does God. Our lives are so much better with him in it. Following in Jesus’s foot steps. I love being a Latter Day Saint. Thank you for making it even clearer. I’m so glad you chose to teach rather than to be an engineer. I’m over in the UK and listening to your testimony made me cry because spirit was saying that what you did and chose to be was the right choice. Thank you for doing these lessons, whilst in lockdown it has been hard not been allowed out since beginning of March, you have lifted my spirits so much. Looking forward to your next lesson.

    I am posting this on my wife's account. We were watching this video today as a family and really appreciated your approach to this. This topic has been one I have contemplated for many years. Conversations with friends and others have taken a difficult road as I have tried to find an explanation that was suitable enough to approach.
    Your explanation on this really spoke to me and I feel is the most correct version I have heard. With the events of the past few days, I have been heart broken as the world has seen what happens when you push God out of your daily life.
    We continued the conversation as a family and gained a greater understanding of the Lords approach to the matter of the Lamanite curse. I always felt, and have known that there was a higher explanation than what I have learned in the past and feel to be able to articulate with greater depth and understanding. Thank you for sharing.

    • @Unshaken
      @Unshaken  4 года назад

      Thank you so much. I'm grateful you're enjoying the lessons. The scriptures speak of many different "curses" but I really do think they're all simply sub-headings under the one ultimate curse we discussed in this lesson--being separated from God. If life eternal is to know God (John 17:3) and to be with Him and like Him, then the ultimate curse--damnation itself--is not knowing Him, not being with Him or like Him. If Christ came to bring us into at-one-ment with Him, then the opposite of that is the worst imaginable curse.

    • @mariagil9742
      @mariagil9742 4 года назад

      Unshaken In my Patriarchal Blessing said that I would help people to overcome “this kind of curse”... that’s it. I really don’t know what that means. It’s nothing before that that can help me to discover the meaning... no clue.

    • @Unshaken
      @Unshaken  4 года назад +1

      @@mariagil9742 Very interesting! Without more context, it's hard to know exactly what the Lord intended with that phrase, but helping people overcome their separation from God is the ultimate mission in life! You may want to search for the word "curse" every time it appears in scripture, and then study all of those verses with your mind open to the Spirit's impressions. It may give you insight from the same Source that prompted the patriarch in the first place. After all, you have access to the same Spirit that he did!

    • @Unshaken
      @Unshaken  4 года назад

      It was a much longer explanation, but it was about Christ going through the experience of each person in the Garden of Gethsemane (the "intimate" that goes along with the "infinite"), coupled with the verse from Matthew 25 about "when you have done it unto the least of these my brethren, you have done it unto me." The thought was that as Christ experienced all the sin and suffering of humanity, He must have also felt what people had done for those during such times--He must have felt the good things that people do and not just the bad things. And in seeing/feeling/experiencing what people had done for others, He would have seen it as being done for Him. So in a way, we were a source of strength and support for Jesus in Gethsemane, not just a source of pain and anguish. In that way, we did "watch with Him one hour," as if we joined the angel is strengthening Him. Beautiful thoughts!

    Hey question... I heard that most African people never used to get their lineage declared in their Patriarchal blessing. Have you heard this before?? Is this true?? Where can I find more about it if true?? Not relevant to my Eternal Salvation - just interested... so no big deal if I can’t find it!!

    • @Unshaken
      @Unshaken  4 года назад

      I haven't heard that. I can't see why anyone would be withheld a Patriarchal blessing or a declaration of lineage, since those don't have to do with the priesthood (only the tribe of Levi is specifically priesthood-related anyway and the vast majority of Church members in any area are not from the tribe of Levi). A friend in my ward was a senior medical missionary in Africa several years ago and he also happens to be an ordained patriarch. He was given permission during his mission to give patriarchal blessings to local members throughout the countries he served, whenever he was out meeting the missionaries' medical needs. His stories are amazing--and many, many different tribes of Israel were represented in the people to whom he gave patriarchal blessings. The Gathering is definitely taking place, all across the earth!

And Brad Wilcox also talks about his experience in the MTC in Africa? Same... all the tribes represented.

      No attempt to promote any particular model on my end. Just hoping to break up the endless visual of my face (which doesn't look very good in any geography!). I'd love to see all kinds of additional artwork created for the scriptures; I just don't have the ability to do that. Either way, the visuals are merely meant to aid in imagining, not to convey scientific information--kind of like Arnold Friberg said of his Book of Mormon paintings. If their ahistoricity gets in the way of the doctrinal and spiritual message of these Book of Mormon lessons, listening instead of watching might be the best bet! Thanks again!
