- Part 1 of a 2-part verse-by-verse study of Alma 13-16, which recounts the conclusion of the ministry of Alma and Amulek in the city of Ammonihah and its aftermath. Part 1 focuses on Alma 13 and examines the priesthood as a preview of the "High Priest of good things to come," the purposes of God's "Order," Christ's "preparatory redemption," and the significance of Melchizedek. I’m studying all scriptures to move me to an Elder. Going over all talks about Melchizedek and Aaronic Priesthood. It’s very helpful. Many thanks for your work and help
50:52 one day as I was thinking about my ancestors, they being early converts that stuck with the Church and came to Utah, I wondered who they thought was the most important. The answer came very clearly to me. “You.” In astonishment I asked, “Me, why me?” “Because you’re in the middle of the fight.”
I felt so loved to know my ancestors care so very much about me, a they do about all of us. I’ve been waiting for doctrine to back that up, when just today I listened to John Bytheway quote President John Taylor, “God lives and His eyes are over us. And, His angels are round and about us and they are more interested in us, than we’re are in ourselves. Ten thousand times, but we do not know it.”
Like so many others who have commented, the lessons you've been sharing have been life-changing for me. The admonition to "study the Scriptures" has always been somewhat nebulous to me; I've never really figured out how to do it and feel that I'm really being effective in my effort. These lessons and your insights are such a great blessing. Of course, we all want COVID to go away but I hope those of us who don't number among your Institute students will still have the benefit and blessing of your teaching. Preparing these videos is incredibly time-consuming, I'm sure, but I hope a way can be found to continue sharing them with all of us.
Thank you for your kindness and encouragement! I know what you mean about wanting to know how to study the scriptures more effectively. We talk a lot about scripture study in the Church, but we don't do much to teach people HOW to do it. I'm glad these lessons have been helpful. Thanks for letting me be a part of your scripture study!
Brother Halverson my wife and I so much appreciate your teachings from the Book of Mormon. We have never experienced anything quite like it and for us it is life changing. We started with Mosiah 26 and since then are listening with great intent to each lecture. We are sharing your link with our friends. We feel your gospel insights are at a depth that we have never heard shared. Thank you and please know you’re making a difference. We truly want to be God’s people and are growing to love our Savior and our Father in Heaven more as we are beginning to understand more fully the value of daily repentance and being baptized unto repentance. God bless you for being willing to share the understanding of the scriptures that God has so abundantly blessed you with ...can’t thank you enough!
Thank you so much for your kind words, Robert. I'm really touched by your gratitude. The Book of Mormon and the Spirit of God deserve all the credit. I'm just grateful for the chance to teach such powerful truths--especially to such open-hearted fellow disciples. I'm grateful we get to learn together!
Twistification ... great word and great reminder. Twist myself and turn my heart to the Word, don’t twist the words to fit myself and my imperfect heart.
Thanks, Brady! I'm grateful we get to study the scriptures together again!
Thank you so much, never in my 30 years in the church has the priesthood been so fully explained
I'm grateful you found the lesson to be helpful. It's such an important subject, with so much more for us to learn!
Thank you. After being an atheist for nearly my whole life, I'm playing a bit of catch up. Your channel has helped immensely. 💕
No catch up needed! I'm grateful the Lord will take us wherever we are, and help us progress at whatever pace we can handle. Welcome home, brother!
I have been following since sometime in Doctrine and Covenants and now Old Testament however over the last couple of months I have been doing double and picking up your Book of Mormon lessons. I have really enjoyed putting my existing knowledge together and seeing so much more. Thank you! You would think that I would have lots of time (and in some way I do. I am 75 and am at the temple weekly) but the Lord has me doing lots of other things also. However. Your videos have helped me dive deeper into the scriptures. Thanks again for you time and diligence.
Yes! John Milton for the win! I took a John Milton class last semester. We spent the majority of the semester studying Paradise Lost and it was so interesting! I actually feel like it really strengthened my testimony despite the fact that not all of Milton's thoughts and beliefs perfectly align with ours as Latter-Day Saints.
I loved Paradise Lost! I think Milton shares insights into the Fall that I've only seen in the Pearl of Great Price accounts (not in the Genesis version). It must have been the Spirit that helped Milton to be so insightful!
I love listening to your lessons.
Thank you! It's an honor to join you for scripture study!
I hope you will never stop to teach also in this RUclips channel. I love your lessons, are amazing, really help me to go deep into the scriptures and find inspiration to act in my life. This is my FAVORITE study of the week (and I do several studies!), and I learn so much and am feed so much spiritually by you and the Spirit that you help to bring with these doctrines and your amazing testimony.
Thank you, Stacey. You've always been a joy to teach, and that continues even from a distance (though two-way communication "in class" would be even better! Thank you for sharing the word with others! I'm grateful for you!
Brother Jared....I am so thankful to have been led to your discourses...I have been taught by your preparations, but more importantly by the conveyance of the truth through the Spirit...I pray for you, and plan to be an Eternal student...Thank you for your example of Faith in The Lord...Keep up the good work😇. Thanks I am enjoying your lessons and I am from Puerto Rico thank you.
This is 100% on point! So thankful brother for your teachings. I was inactive 15 years and came back thanks to Christ. He literally snatched me out of a deep abyss.
So grateful you found your way home! We all spend time wandering and not everyone lets the Good Shepherd bring them back. Thanks for being an example of His love.
Thank you, Brother Halverson, for increasing my understanding of the power of the priesthood and its purpose to bring God's children back into His presence to enter into His rest.
You are so welcome. I'm amazed at the ways our Father in Heaven helps us home--blessing both giver and receiver, both leader and follower, both shepherd and sheep. Thanks for letting me be a part of your scripture study!
Words of truth go directly into the heart. This is truth!
Amen! Thanks for opening your heart to it!

Nice to meet a fellow Californian! Thanks for tuning in!
Thank you for another great lesson. There is so much love, passion and enthusiasm for the scriptures, that comes through, crystal clear. It enhances my understanding of the Book of Mormon, for the first time in almost 8 yrs, that I have been in the Church.
Thank you so much. I'm grateful the Book of Mormon is bringing greater light and truth into your life, and it's done in mine. It's a blessing to be able to study together!

Brother Halverson, I have watched multiple Come Follow Me RUclips lessons and I walk away with something good from each. I love the debth of your lessons. I too concur with another comment that said your lesson has tought them clearly about the Priesthood. I'm a life. Long member and have always viewed priesthood as service but now I have added insight. I will continue serving/ministering but will do better in pointing those around me to the Savior. Keep up the excellent work. Your brother in the gospel
I love your comment! Thank you for sharing. I'm grateful for the way the scriptures deepen our understanding and give us added desire to make a difference in others' lives. Bless you in your efforts!
Thank you. I love all of your lessons. I replayed this lesson a few times. I love your knowledge of the scriptures.
Thank you for being such an eager learner! I'm grateful to be able to study the scriptures together.
I feel the same way never in my 25 years it's been explained to me this way
I hope it's helpful! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for these videos I never got the opportunity to take religion classes even though I really desired to. It's a blessing to get a chance to know more of God's love and goodness for all of us. His timing is always perfect if we wait upon Him. I hope you continue making these videos to cover all scriptures. Thanks again.
I'm glad these lessons are a blessing to you! Thanks for letting me be a part of your scripture study!
So grateful for your comments about us not resting the scriptures. So much of that was done pertaining to Blacks and the priesthood. Grateful for the scriptures that teach All are alike unto God.I have been a benefactor of the blessings of the priesthood and the gospel. Today is the day to repent glad for that reminder we all need to repent and Love God and our fellow man .
Amen! God is the Father of us all, and He doesn't play favorites. I'm grateful for that understanding as well. Thank you for watching, and for sharing your perspective!

Hello from Melbourne Australia. I Starting viewing back at the start of Mosiah and I cannot miss a week. Thank you so much, I look forward every week to your teachings.
Thank you for sticking with it! I know the videos are long, but the Book of Mormon is just so full of incredible truths!
Thank you so much for your lessons
You are very welcome!
I have always struggled with reading Alma 13. It seems to me that the first 11 verses are just constant repetitions and redundancies that make my head spin. I'm thankful for Brother Halverson's detailed line-by-line analysis that helps to identify the minutiae and show how each repetition builds upon the previous one. I'll still have a problem reading it on my own, so maybe every time in the future that it comes up in my reading I'll just re-watch this :).
The Book of Mormon never contradicts the Bible, but often expands and clarifies its teachings, in addition to revealing new truths. See Alma 13:28, for example. The language about not being tempted above that which we can bear in 1 Cor. 10:13 seems to come without condition, as a free gift. But Alma asserts that we must “watch and pray” for this assurance to become efficacious. Good to know!
Excellent insight! Another example of faith without works being dead. And like you said, a great example of the ways that scriptures expand upon each other. One great "cloud of witnesses"!
Thank you👍😍
You are so welcome! Thanks for watching!
Love your description of 'order'. Great teaching to start the lesson. There is so much knowledge inside that head of yours! I am so grateful for you. Thank you for teaching us. I live in South Jordan Ut.
Thank you for being such an eager learner! That makes an even bigger difference than the teacher!
Thank you so very much, I do hope you will be able to continue these lessons
Me too! Thanks for the encouragement!
I was struggling to understand the "preparatory redemption" passage in Alma 13:3 when I was reading on my own, and your explanation was wonderful. Thank you!
I'm glad it helped! It's definitely a tricky--and fascinating--concept. Thanks for letting me be a part of your scripture study!
“All are alike unto God”. 2Ne26:33 “. “I the Lord am willing to make these things known unto all flesh; for I am no respecter of persons...”. D&C 1: 34-35
Such beautiful verses. If only we could always view one another through the lens of the Fatherhood of God. Thank you.
hermano gracias por compartir estos momentos y su testimonio del Libro de Mormon. Desde Medellin, Colombia.
Gracias hermano! Estoy agradecido tener un emigo en Colombia!
Thank you I really enjoy your lessons
I'm so glad they've been a blessing to you! Thank you for letting me be a part of your scripture study!
You make it so interesting and I’m learning so much. Thank You
I'm so glad the Book of Mormon is coming to life for you! Thanks for letting me be a part of your scripture study!
I loved John Milton's Paradise Lost though I have to admit the first time I read it was like walking through wet cement lol as far as the book of Abraham I accept it faith and the witness of the Spirit that it is from the Savior through Joseph Smith don't have to know anymore unless the Lord reveals it to me
Haha! Milton is definitely an acquired taste :) And I agree with your take on the Book of Abraham. Thanks for sharing!
I'm so glad I found your pod cast, will continue to follow you from Alpharetta GA!
Thank you! I lived in Tennessee for 8 years and I miss the South! Thanks for letting me be a part of your scripture study!
I would really like a transcript of these videos. Anywhere I can obtain them? I really enjoy your channel. Thank you very much.
Yes, we need "show notes"
Thanks for your interest in deepening your study! I don't make transcripts when I teach; just bullet-point outlines. But even those are mostly just cues to help me remember things. I'm sorry I don't have clearer "show notes" but the video editing takes so much time that it's all I can do to keep up! Thanks for putting up with me!
Not sure if this is still relavent to you, but if you are on youtube desktop, you can click the 3 dots just below the video and select "show transcript". On mobile, tap the down arrow on the right of the video title for transcript.
@@Unshaken This is now possible as RUclips does it automatically. if you are on RUclips desktop, you can click the 3 dots just below the video and select "show transcript". On mobile, tap the down arrow on the right of the video title for transcript.
Thank you very much. New sub. Wenatchee Washington
Welcome aboard! Thanks for letting me be a part of your scripture study!
Question....we were committing sin in our pre life... how were we able to be in god’s presence.?
Great question! The key is whether or not we get to "stay" in God's presence and live with Him eternally. Overcoming our sinfulness so that we can eventually be able to do that is the point of the whole Plan. The unclean can "be" in the presence of God, but they cannot eternally "dwell" in God's presence. It's the "dwelling" part that's the difference.
In some ways, because of the omnipresence of God's spirit, we are always "in His presence." As the Psalmist said, "Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?" (Ps. 139:7). The question is, can we become worthy enough to "dwell" in His presence (to stay there permanently)? As Lehi taught, "there is no flesh that can DWELL in the presence of God, save it be through the merits, and mercy, and grace of the Holy Messiah" (2 Ne. 2:8).
A fallen Adam and Eve tried to hide (unsuccessfully) from God's presence; at the beginning of the Book of Job, Satan is in God's presence; there's a great verse in the Psalms (Ps. 51:11) when a fallen David prays, "Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me." Again, there's that sense of being in God's presence but not being able to stay there.
I hope that helps a bit!
You should use the introduction of this video from 00:07 to 02:31and make it your Channel Trailer. It is the first video that plays automatically when someone new visits your channel. I think it would b a great introduction!
Great idea! I'd love to make something more "official-looking" eventually, but that would be a good intro for now. Thanks!
Thank you for this insightful lesson. I appreciate the reverence you focused on regarding the true name of the Melch. PH. Why do you suppose with this injunction for reverence of His name our current High Priest has shifted course and now encouraged the more frequent use as opposed to other monikers?
Great question. There must be something we don't fully understand about that verse in D&C 107. One thought I've had is that it speaks of "the name of the Supreme Being" and the full name of the priesthood mentions "God," but not "Jesus Christ." So perhaps it is the Father whose name that verse is protecting. Also, talk of the Melchizedek Priesthood usually occurs between members, while the name of the Church is used very frequently with non-members, and we're not doing them any favors by not clarifying whose Church it is. There's probably more than that, but there's my two cents! Thanks for letting me be a part of your scripture study!
B.M Alma13:3: now creation, fall atonement-b4 atonement, fall, creation. Shouldn´t it be the latter: atonement, creation, fall; because without creation where would we fall?
nice video bro
Thanks!
I have an impression; but first consider the events. J.S gave the prestood to blacks in the beginning, after his death apostle and BY walked it back. Lots of conversation about why... Then I heard someone say that God commanded it in the beginning and influence of man and society changed it. So did God have to wait for "men" to be aligned to bring it back in 1978? God does not wait, he can make the way with all things possible.
Now with the increased and rise of discrimination right now, many might look back on this.
My impression is that it was not withheld from blacks for the blacks. I'm thinking it was done to judge us, the discriminating judges from what we think are higher places. Could it be like having a child that is mentally handicapped, the child will never be more then a child. They are already accomplished to celestial glory. Who's being taught and challenge? The child or the parents?
Great thoughts. Psalm 78:41 says that ancient Israel "limited the Holy One of Israel" and I think we continue to do that all the time. And the Lord in His patience waits for us to catch up, to get out of His way, to allow Him to do what He's wanted to do for a long, long time. Thanks again for your comments!
After 30 min, we’re still on Alma 13:2!! You’re all over the place.
I'm grateful for the rich treasure trove that the Book of Mormon presents us, every time we open it! Sorry to take so long to cover the ground, but there seems to be something beautiful under every rock!
I for one love that you bring in all the scriptures to teach with
@@dns16372 Thank you! I consider the scriptures "one great whole." A "cloud of witnesses" with connections running throughout.
@@Unshaken I agree with Dan. I also love it when you bring in other scriptures and i don't care how much time you take. An honest seeker of truth, when they hear it will cleave unto it.
Are you still planning on making this a podcast?
I keep meaning to, but haven't forced other things out of my schedule to make the time. I'll probably just end up separating the audio out from the video and posting that, but I still need to make some kind of intro to explain what's going on. I need more days in the week! (Don't we all!)
Unshaken I can do a general intro for you if you want.
Why do people of other faiths get so upset when sharing the plan of salvation and talking about becoming like Heavenly Father?
Great question. Usually they feel that it somehow takes away from God, when from our perspective it is simply adding to His glory. Or they think that we're replacing God, usurping His authority, or somehow becoming independent of Him (none of which is true). And often it's our own fault, in terms of the way that we explain it. Most believe that the grace of Jesus makes us into people who are more like Him. We just clarify the eternal nature of that growth--forever becoming more and more like Jesus. In one of the videos about King Benjamin (I think!), I talk a little more about this topic. It's such a powerful one!
Hi Bro Halveson: Great presentation. I found your remarks about the priest's breastplate compelling. Can you talk a litttle more about the "reasonable service" that we are preparing for when we put on our holy breastplates...?
Great question! I love how Paul uses that phrase ("reasonable service") in Romans 12:1, which he defines as "present[ing] your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God." I think that's a beautiful tie-in to the ancient priesthood, since so much of their daily service was presenting sacrifices to God. Like we talked about in this lesson, if everything they did was meant to point them (and others) forward to Jesus Christ, then their sacrificial offerings were a type and shadow of Jesus presenting His body "a living sacrifice," which is also what He asks of each of us. Considering all He gave for us, it does seem perfectly "reasonable" for us to offer Him all our heart, might, mind, and strength in service to God and humanity--treating one another like the "precious stones" the high priest bore over his heart, lifting each other like the "precious stones" on his shoulders, serving with "holiness to the Lord" always on our minds, etc. We often think we're being asked to do too much, but like Paul said, the service God asks of us is perfectly "reasonable." In fact, it's an honor to give it.
Thanks so much for asking!
Wish Ive known you sooner
Elder Holland is one who has definitely repudiated false doctrines about the priesthood and African Americans.
Yes. I'm grateful for his clear and powerful voice! Sad to think that the last remaining apostles that were there for the 1978 revelation have all passed on. What a blessing to have that added light and truth.
