I love these lessons!! AMAZING parallels I've never seen before! I learned so much. Oh, and that story of your mission companion Elder Josephat--tears; I had tears. What a shining example of sacrificing all for the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Elder Josafat was amazing! There are truly incredible disciples all over the world, being drawn to the truth by the Spirit. It was an honor to serve with him!
I needed to let go friends and family tradition whet I became a member of the true Gospel.
The gain was and is greater.
My 9 brothers and sisters did not joyed and none of my nephews and nieces.
I did the temple work for my parents and many of my generation until 1500th.
I love the truth.
The Gospel fills the emptyness that I had.
I am not hungry or thirst anymore.

I LOVED the comparison of righteous women. It would THRILL me to delve deeper into those stories. I love reading about the many righteous sisters who have been there from the start. I have studied so many of these BEAUTIFUL Sisters, in my desire to be more like them. Thank you!
Brother Halverson, I have worried that you had perhaps never seen my earlier message to you about your gramma' an' grampa'. You speak of when your grampa' left the family an' left your gramma' to raise the children alone. Please, please understand that the period of time when he left was a time when he probably felt he had no choice.
See... it was a time when the government was telling the men that if they would leave, they... the government would be able to take care of the families. The government were telling the men that as long as the men stayed with their families, they... the government Could NOT step in to help the families.
Many, many men felt they had no other choice but to leave so their families would be taken care of. Of course, the government did Not follow through on that promise, but the men were gone an' had no way of knowing that. My own grampa' left my gramma' during those Depression years so that she an' the children would be able to receive food an' other care. They never received it, but at least, my gramma' an' grampa' had discussed WHY Grampa' would be leaving. So Gramma' KNEW that he didn't leave for nefarious reasons or to Hurt her. I think that was probably one of the most difficult things my great-grampa' ever did; leaving his family to fend for themselves.
Most women were left in the dark as to why their husbands suddenly left them, at a time when there was no hope. I'm so thankful that my great-grampa' was wise enough to talk to my gramma' an' explain why he felt he had to leave. PLEASE... do not blame your grampa'. I strongly suspect that he felt the same desperation that my grampa' felt. Please KNOW that his leaving was probably far more HEROIC than anyone in your family is aware. Love him. Because He LOVED his Family.

I loved the parallel you drew between Ammon rescuing the scattered sheep and the gathering of Christ's sheep. I had never once made that connection and yet now, it seems so clear. Thank you for imparting of your knowledge and your spirit.....and most of all for your testimony. You certainly have added strength to my own.

Do you ever stop and think that perhaps Amulek's wife and children were among those cast into the fire? Sure it says in Alma 15:16 that Amulek was "rejected by... his father and his kindred" - but does not say specifically anyone rather than his father. At the very least, Amulek knew some of those cast into the flames. Then in Alma 15:18 it says that after all that happened, Alma took Amulek into his home in Zarahemla and "did administer unto him in his tribulations and strengthened him in the Lord". Alma showed what ministering is about.
Well said! I have wondered just how connected Amulek was to the martyrs of Ammonihah--including if they included his own wife and children. We can't know for sure from the text itself, but I do agree that there are hints that point in the direction of a total loss on Amulek's part. What an example of "observing our covenants by sacrifice"!
I had never noticed so many parallels and ironies in these chapters before! You just opened my eyes to so many fascinating layers to Alma, Amulek, and the whole story in general. I'll never read these chapters the same. Thanks, Bro Hal! Also, your mission companion is my new hero.
Haha! Elder Josafat is one of my heroes too! And I'm glad you enjoyed peeling back some of those layers. Knowing your own literary skills, I'm not surprised that you liked that! Not only is the Book of Mormon powerful scripture, it's incredible literature!

That's a great idea! Often those quotes just pop into my head, especially when it comes to Elder Maxwell. I've spent so many years learning and relearning from him, that he still feels very much alive to me. I'll try to do better at helping people find him!

Were Elder Jehoshaphat and his family able to reconcile eventually?
Where in the scriptures is the daughters of Onita who are in comparison to Shadrack, Meshack, and Abednego? I may have the spelling wrong for Onita. Are you possibly speaking of the five daughters of Zelophehad? I did not think they were Zelophehad daughters because they inherited land because there father had no sons. Daniel and his friends lost their land due to being captured by the babylonians and Shadrack, Meshack, and Abednego faced the fiery furnace. Kris Reed
The daughters of Zelophehad are great examples as well, but of a different principle. The daughters of Onitah are mentioned very briefly in the Book of Abraham (Abr. 1:11). I love comparing them to the 3 Hebrews young men because they had similar faith and courage and faced similar opposition, but the outcome was different (the young men were spared and the young women were not). When Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were about to be throw into the fiery furnace, they said "if it be so," God can save us (which is the result they received), and they said "but if not," we still won't waver (which is the result the daughters of Onitah received). I hope to have the faith to be able to make both statements!
Hi there, I am so grateful to you for posting these videos! They are an amazing supplement to my daily scripture study. In light of recent events regarding the BLACK LIVES MATTER movement, could you please make a video about the curse placed on the lamanites in the Book of Mormon?
He gives a wonderful explanation about the "mark" verses the "curse" in his video on Mosiah 29-Alma 4. It is in Part 3 of that lesson, entitled "The Curse of God". It is very good and explains it so simply and clearly.
You're a step ahead of me as usual, Jan! Kaylee, yes, the 3rd video from Mosiah 29-Alma 4 is a good place to see that. One of these days when I have the time, I'd love to do an entire video on race and the priesthood, but I'm barely keeping up with the Book of Mormon as is! So much good stuff to discuss! I try to get them out each week--to keep up with the Come Follow Me schedule. There is just so much to cover in each week's material that there usually ends up being two or three parts each week, and I normally get them out on Saturday or Sunday. Thanks for watching!
