    Thanks for a great video. What you need to bear in mind is that RS Cosworths and XR4s were looked after and therefore there will be many more of these around. After a while, nobody would have taken care of a 1.6L and as such, most were scrapped so having a good one of these may possibly be quite rare. Personally, I think just as much of a lower spec original car as I do a higher spec for this reason.

      My first motor after coming out the raf in 93. Full ignition system , cooling system , exhaust, new headlamps , valves set. Gaskets replaced. Then passed its mot straight after. Fitst time I'd done it. Some good ole Avon firestone boots on it. It lasted years , never broke down, never failed an mot.

    The Ford VV carb will be fine with a clean and a new diaphragm kit. They were not as bad as many make out - I was fixing them 30-40 years ago.

    • @taunus1990
      @taunus1990 11 месяцев назад +1

      I agree. The VV gives good fuel economy if working perfectly. But on the other hand, a Weber is simpler and parts are easier to find.
      Getting gaskets for a VV will not be a problem, but the big vacuum diafragram is a lot harder to find these days.

    I left school in 1990 & spent 5yrs in a Ford main dealer (3yr apprenticeship) cut my teeth on these Sierra’s, Escorts, Fiesta’s etc. Moved on to various inc Mercs.., I completed 25yrs then jacked it all in & took HGV which I drive for a living now!. Enjoy it all mate because when you look back you realise it’s true that time really does fly (child of the 70’s/80’s speaking there!, I remember being told it by some middle aged geezer!, he was right!) it was great to see you and your mates freeing that old dinosaur and having a laugh!, it’s what we did back in the day! 😂👍 btw, definitely change that VV carb for a Weber.., I have fitted endless amounts of VV overhaul kits to them, IMO they are crap!, but obviously ok if maintained correctly & you are after grandad performance (which I would be now!)😂👍

    The FIRST thing you do with seized engines, is to put a crowbar on the cogs of the flywheel - because that‘ll give you far more leverage and control than on the pully nut. Or you can pump it on a starter - but that can destroy the teeth. It‘s also basic to apply some heat to seized engines. Good luck.

    • @Juntasification

    Josh, that head lying on the floor in the “barn” will have the bent valves at a guess (I’m also guessing you brought it back so you can check) the head on the engine will have straight valves as it will be a replacement so that’s the head worth renovating. Just for the record I de seized many an engine using a lump hammer and 3x2 back in the day and I’m surprised you didn’t attempt it before pulling the lump out 😀👍

    The rings will also be seized/stuck into the piston ring lands. You will need to pull the pistons out and clean/free them off. The con rod bolts may be use once only on this gen Pinto. But the 1600 on a VV was quite a decent engine. Not as powerful as the 2000 but much sweeter. That's a Type 3 four speedo gearbox as well, a very good unit.

    That gap would house an analogue clock on an L trim with a cubby next to it with slots for cassettes. If it was a Base trim it wouldnt even have a clock. Higher trim levels in the early cars,GL and above had a row of extra warning lights at the top for screen wash and other bits,the Ghia would have had a digital clock and an outline of the car next to it with door open warnings,headlight,tail and brake light bulb failure warning and ice warning. Early Ghia and XR4 models also had a different grille with separate dip and main bulbs as well as different style bumper with fog lights lower down with larger indicators next to them. Later cars,E plate on I think when facelift came about all had a digital clock except for the diesels which had an analogue clock with a glow plug light above the clock. Later diesels all had the sapphire style grille too. Random ford knowledge from growing up with numerous bangers out the admag!

    • @gimble447
      @gimble447 10 месяцев назад +1

      As I said in my comment it will just have had a plain cubby hole there as his car has the tape holders ( pop drawers) at the bottom behind the gear lever , you don't get the tape slots beside the clock if those are fitted :) and cars like sapphire Cosworth ( still miss mine :( ) would have had what you described above for ghias :) facelift mk2 came out mid 87 on a late D reg :)

      Booh! Boooooohhhh!!!
      The 1.6 feels much more lively. 2.0 have higher stroke, so good low torque, but feels dead in high rpm.
      The 1.6 is the opposite. A bit less low down torque, but feels more lively in the higher rpm...
      I have driven Cortina and Sierra with 1.6 and 2.0 with Weber 32/36 carb on, allways preferred the 1.6. Also better fuel economy with a 1.6.
      The 1.6 is underrated and the 2.0 overrated. Same with the gearboxes. Everyone yelling "put a Sierra 5 speed in youre Cortina!" Those 5 speed boxes dont shift as smooth as the 4 speed. A 4 speed shifts with a touch of youre pink. The 5 speeds all feel so cluttered.

    Well done! When I saw the water sitting in the head in your first video I thought it would be completely toasted, good on you for persevering. I rekon go full restoration on that engine now the block is salvageable, you have come this far... The love has set in...Blow it apart, take it to an automotive machine shop to hone the bores, skim the head, hone the crank, new pistons and rings (find manuaul on the dark art of piston ring gapping 😂) - new heads and all the trimmings! Do full resto and metal seal on car, love it, build a dry shed for it, start it once a week for the next 20 years, take it to meets, become a Ford guy and go on honey moon in it - you know you want to 😁🤩 Lol, I restored and then years later turbo charged a Mk1 Nissan Almera I found at the back of a scrap yard with a broken gear box and a blown head gasket. Its a completely senseless addiction. Currently parked after cylinder 1's tiny crack that would huff a little water vapour on start up for years but held together is now fully gone 😢 Full rebuild time 😊

  • @razorsz195
    @razorsz195 11 месяцев назад +8

    With how far you've taken it apart, the risk of stuck rings and the bore damage, i honestly think finding a whole new engine will avoid you needing to pay that money into a skim if you're thinking of getting a new head anyway, that could just go towards a drop in engine, you'll probs get a clutch and flywheel assembly, better condition carb, so you can swab bits n bobs and the old bits can be weighed and some bits kept :)

  • @jfv65

    Put some new valve guide seals on the guides. For this you need to take out the valves, obviously. But it then gives you the perfect opportunity to check for bent valves (put then in a drill. Let the drill spin the valve and then you can see if it is out of wack or still true. When putting them back in you can inspect the seats and maybe lap those valves in for a perfect seal.
    IMO the cylinder head is the heart of an engine. The more attention you give it to make it perfect, the better the engine will run once it's back together.

      I would beforehand do 2 things 1. remove the cam oil feed pipe and retaining bolts and put them somewhere very safe 2. clean the combustion chambers and check for any visible cracks from memory I am sure pinto's used to crack between the valves when the engine has been frozen highly likely given the circumstances oh and 3. the sump is full of water 😉🤣

Plus you can do some upgrades to it if you wanted, as i know these engines are tuneable. The bottom end id check over as you say, with it been sitting for that long, plus if its been stolen in the past, god knows what ride its had. See if there are some old school yards about, that have these in still, you may need to travel though, so you can get the bits and pieces. You maybe lucky you may find one that age still in a yard. Look in fast ford mags etc. As i am sure there was a sierra breaker in a mag i read some year ago, and the owners clubs.

    On a base model 1.6 it's most likely just a pocket in the dash, might be a clock and pocket if it's a gl.
    The cam belt not being tight is not an issue as pinto is a non interference engine, meaning you can snap the belt and just bung a new one on it'll run fine, the reason the chap didn't get it running is likely because the timing is out.
    I'm 10 mins into the vid and will keep watching and point anything else out I can to help

      As for the head and cam just clean it up a best you can and reuse.
      I wouldn't bother replacing anything other than the gaskets unless your plan is to keep the thing, it's gonna smoke like a bus when it run do the the rings beinh stuck in the ring lands anyways so that engine will need rebuilding.
      Even with a pitted cam it'll run, use some high zinc oil and it'll be fine.

    The Weber Manual Choke kit was much better than the automatic choke VV carb. "WEBER 34 ICH" if memory serves me right. That car cleaned out and cleaned up will be very desireable. Tbh getting that engine/box out is the best idea i saw. now you can pressure wash the engine/bay etc :-) check the big end bearings. the gearbox oil looked delicous like a glass and a half kind (chocolate) LOL :-) i love this. its bringing back so many memories of my mum and dad's Sierra's which i mentioned in the 1st video 1985 1.8 L 5 speed. 1983 2.0 GL 4 Speed.

    these engines are notorious for locking up if left to sit for a while they are also non interferance engines the valves do not hit the pistons if the timing jumps or the belt breaks but if i were you i would do the valve stem oil seals they will be goosed they smoke like fook when starting due to this fault best of luck with this its worth doing

    If you got a blow torch gently heat the head were the pistons are and use a rubber mallet and hit the top off the pistons the rings are stuck to the boar that is why you cannot turn over the engine.

    That Sierra is the same as a Merkur XR4TI that Ford sent to the US in the late 80's so watching a 4 door non turbo 2.3 being messed with is interesting to me as I have a 1992 Ford Ranger that has the same engine so I'm going to watch all you post 🙂

      It's a 5 door ( a 4 door ( sedan) was called a sierra sapphire here in Europe) and the pinto engine in this car is only a 1.6 litre 😂

    also the head is cast steel it will not require skimming you are working on old school 1970's engine first used in 1971 or thereabouts like i said before they are non interferance heads strip it fit a new cam kit and stem seals it will be good to go

    The recesses in the pistons are supposed to be there,there a non interference engine give it a valve job and cam and it’ll go again

    • @Dirt-Diggler
      @Dirt-Diggler 11 месяцев назад

      The 1.6 is non interference because of the lower valve lift.
      Incidentally the 2.0 transit engine used the 1.6 cam with lower lift 👍

    I would see money wise wat to do rebuild that engine or buy another one? as the 16 pinto will be cheap as everyone uses the the 20 pinto more but good to see you got it tunning over after all that

    I love how Ford got away with using world war 2 engines in their cars, I remember the cam knocking on the cortina’s and sierras back in the day, oil starvation was the prognosis, crap cars. Great channel though, very informative.

    If I remember correctly, the 1.6 Pinto cylinder heads were desirable, due to a higher CR, for fitting to the 2.0 Pinto bottom end.
