The Porsche Boxster and Cayman are almost as perfect as roadgoing sports cars get. They are the right size, the right shape, they handle brilliantly and they are very quick. But what if you wanted to take one to the extreme? Starting with the Cayman GT4 or Boxster/718 Spyder, DeMan Motorsports of Blauvelt, NY offers a monster of an engine upgrade - a high-compression, 4.5L, naturally aspirated, track-ready beast. Starting with the car's standard 4.0L, 414-hp engine, the finished product makes 565 HP and 440 lb/ft of torque. To that, DeMan fits a close-ratio gear set for the six-speed manual transmission. First and sixth gear are left stock, while second through fifth ratios are shortened for better response and more fun. If the car had any shortcomings from the factory, these two (admittedly major) modifications fix them, and then some. As soon as I tried DeMan's demonstrator vehicle, I was hooked, and decided that it was the best sports car of all time, and I had to have one. Nearly 20 months later, I finally do. Zack and I take our first post-break in drive up a cold, damp canyon together and make the engine sing.

Perfection. The spec, the colour, the transmission and noise. Bravo 👏🏻
The manual needs regeared. Ratios are just too tall.
@@RadDadisRad I don't agree. I find the gearing to be quite conveniente, suits the car and the function well.
@@GreatMotors I have a 718 GTS. You should not be doing 90mph in the top of 2nd. Shark Werks fixed it by regearing the transmission. It’s just a shame the factory gearing is tall for the turbo 4 cylinder cars to make best use of the torque curve and not the top end on the NA cars. I also have a 986 Boxster S with a M96 swap, not as fast but definitely lots of fun.
@@RadDadisRad the box works perfectly on track. Allows you to explore the elasticity of the motor why not having to switch gears multiple times between turns. I've 981 GT4, had a 718 Spyder, have a 991.2 3RS. If that brings more weight to my word.
@@GreatMotors I hear what you’re saying. The car is sluggish and hard to jockey through the track with the stock gearbox, you try to carry too much speed through turns. That’s my experience along with others. The cars legs are too long in stock form and you don’t pick up speed quick enough and then find yourself either too low in 3rd gear or too high in 2nd gear to actually have fun. I rarely clicked into 4th and when I did it was for a split second. Mid 140s for sports car with 400hp should be 5th gear not the shift change from 3rd to 4th. My gearbox is great now. If it was a turbo car I’d probably agree with you but since it’s not a turbo car I can’t agree.
My jaw actually dropped when Matt said "This makes more horsepower at the wheels than a GT3 makes at the crank."
As the owner of an N/A 911. This sounds so much different. Almost like a flat 6 with the deepness of a V8. I always find that Porsches sound so much better in person than via a microphone. I can’t even imagine this one. Congratulations brother.
Same thing I thought it somehow combines the sound of a crossplane v8 with the boxer 6, very unique and beautiful
That's because each cylinder basically has just a little less displacement than a bored out 6.2L LS that's been destroked. 4.25" bore, 3.23" stroke.
It sounds like a 370Z with an ebay muffler
The video doesn’t really capture the sound. It somewhat recreate the note, but not the intensity or raspiness of it. I heard it in person, and it’s way nastier in person than the video. It’s like watching a video of a shuttle vs. being at a launch in person.
@@joeracer302 If that's true, how is it that other engines can be heard perfectly fine via computer? Ohhh, Porsche is a special kind of sound that simply does not behave like other sound does!
Zack still needs a raise.

You're driving my dream car. The one I didn't know I needed until I saw this video. Enjoy Matt.
The older I get the more I appreciate modding a car in the spirit of the way "the factory would have done it." Well done.
OEM+ is always the way for me
@@JustinSearabsolutely. last thing you want to do at our older age is have a riced out car that looks like some spoiled teenager at ucla drives 😂
Right on isn't it?!?!
You did not have to tell Zach twice to smash the throttle! Haha He was SO quick to say "OKAY!" Loved this video and the wait was well worth. I'm glad you're happy with your car Matt! (:
13:20 for some of the purest enjoyment of a perfect manual transmission ever. Love seeing how Zach had to totally recalibrate for the light flywheel!
From a fellow GT4 owner , huge congrats Matt ! we actually met at the Fort Adams Cars n Coffee in Newport back in 2021 , and you had mentioned you ordered the Spyder which sadly met its fate in that cargo ship. Glad Rick got this one buttoned up so nicely. Going to get my car to him for the 2-5th gear mod for sure. Enjoy it and great vid !!
The Shark Werks regearing is super helpful. Definitely makes canyons so much more fun.
I was at that C&C and met Matt as well, what a great day that was!
@@RadDadisRad how much is the Shark Werks re-gearing?
Matt, this care SOUNDS SO good! Amazing tone. It's got bass, it's got burble. Literally a V8 tone to it. And I get the overall theme too... it's very much strawberry shortcake. It's unique - and I will take unique over silver, black or white bland every day of the week & twice on Sunday. Congrats!🍓🍰
I love Zack's reaction to how fast it revs. That says it all. It reminds me of a Carrera GT.
13.4/1 Compression 😂 basically a race car engine Matt you're a friggin legend 🙌
My moms Mazda has 14:1 😅
11:27 "Just smash the throttle"
Matt feeling how fast his car really is, riding passenger and having to brace himself while Zach is sending it! 😆
That noise is fantastic. Extremely cool that such an old school tuning method (bigger motor) gives such great results these days
I know i love it.
Personally, I'm not a fan of the pink, but I can appreciate that others would enjoy it. The rest of this is just epic. Keeping the OEM Porsche suspension, adding that gruff noise, that much power and short gearing... The perfect weekend sports car? I think so.
The tone of that exhaust is insane, a sound I’ve never heard before. I love it.
When the 718 Spyder RS finally comes out, a back to back comparison with your De Man 718 Spyder will be very interesting! 🤩
Congratulations Matt! In my own selfish way, I like to think that I had a small part in changing your thinking and sharing my love for different Porsches with you in the smoking tire one takes we did together many years ago. Especially with my 3.4 liter conversion Boxster we did back in 2015 on this exact same road is where I feel you gained a lot of respect for the Boxster. It's great to see you embrace the Boxster and modify it to God Mode, even though you could have easily purchased a GT3 for the similar money. Very happy for you and all your success. Amazing ride! Just a note to viewers. This road is at an elevation of 5000-6000 feet which naturally aspirated engines take about a 15% hit on power. So you would be down close to 100 horses and it's still super fast!
Congrats on the car. Wild.
Now lets bring this to the top beacuse Zack needs a raise Matt.
My GT3 got the same 4.5L. Same pain problems with the boostane and the sport mode (I hate it too). Problem solved with M-Engineering. Their tune is a game changer. Made 40 WHP more too. Please have Mitch do yours 🙏🏻
who does your maintenance? Will porsche do it even though with the demans kit?
Dude Matt you built a perfect Porsche. While this color combo isn’t my choice that doesn’t matter. That sound. That gearbox correction. That snappy flywheel. That exhaust. That power. That balance. PCCB. Lighter wheels!??
THAT
SOUND!!!!!!
Thank you Matt for going after a car project like this. Gives a ton of inspiration.
Can’t wait to see more videos in the future. 🎉
I have been waiting for this video since you have announced that you are getting a 718 Spyder. What a boss move by sending the car directly from the dealership straight to DeMan for the mods. I have a 718 Spyder as well, and very inspired this. I might wait till my drivetrain warranty to expire before I proceed. Huge fan! Thanks again. Keep up the great work.
Bro! BRO! The sound that produces in beyond words. If it sounds that good through video I can only imagine how insane it is in person. Thanks for capturing it and sharing with us.
That thing is amazing. Quick check of the calculator and it appears that you have more individual cylinder displacement then a 350 Chevy AND you rev to 8000! I'm sure the materials used to build it are also top notch. I appreciate a great engine build and that thing is spectacular.
Definitely has a motorsport sound to it, reminds me of going to the vintage races…goosebumps!
Man, that is one of the best sounding Porsches I've ever heard.
That exhaust note. Sounds like the love child of a GT3 and a Z51.
What a special car. I wouldn't let a car like this go. This is a dream car for sure.
One of the most beautiful sounding engines I've heard in a while. Beautiful spec man, cars are all about personalization. Congratulations Mat. Drive the shit out of it
Amazing! Best combo ever! 718 Spyder and DeMan engine! That’s connoisseur stuff. Congratulations.
That engine sounds monstrous with what they did to it. Love the colour looks amazing.
sick paint and wheel combo 10/10
When you have driven as many cars through the canyons as Matt and Zack have you can unlock the ultimate driving solution. Nice work !
11:36, nice SVJ in the wild
Brilliant choices and an amazing car, gorgeous looks, INCREDIBLE sound! (Why not gloss black for the brake callipers to match the side vents and other body work?) Without a doubt one of the best sounding cars I've ever heard. Well done, Matt and DeMan!
Sick car! Love the unique color combo. I really hope we start getting more color options from the factory like what VW did for a little while w/the MK7.5s.
This video should be called 2 in the pink.
That exhaust!! what a sound!! Those Dunlops are a really good tyre - a buddy of mine runs them on his GT3RS and loves them.
Congrats Matt, what an incredible car
Sounds absolutely incredible! We're going to need another "Take" in the spring/summer when you can REALLY push it!
Strawberry Shortcake is a masterpiece of kinetic art. Well done Matt!
Beautiful car, my friend! That exhaust note is freaking awesome!!
Hey been watching for years now. This car is absolutely beautiful and that sounds so ridiculous I love it! Keep up the good work guys! Great to finally see the color and it is funky cool love that as well. The car is definitely unique. Very special ride. Enjoy the hell out of that you deserve it!
the symphony is stupendous matches the appearance of speed through I can see why you did this well done 👏🏽 again enjoy 👌🏽
Thanks for the video! I know you don't like doing videos on your own cars, but we really appreciate it.
A wild Magnus Walker appears
Here at RK Motors, we have a 718 Spyder with a DeMan Motorsports built engine that's about to hit our inventory soon. And it's a nasty demonic sound, but the sheer power and response is SO addicting! Best Porsche with a DeMan built engine and drivetrain 💯🔥
Now that's an enthusiast car, absolutely perfect
Can’t believe that is the quietest exhaust option DeMan offers lol. Sounds wonderful.
Still can't get over how good the color combo looks! Sounds like a 4 wheeled Ducati. Congrats!
Lol, really?
@@ClaytonYatescarenthusiast Salmon-ey pink with a red interior does not sound good in my head or on paper but it working here...well gotta give cred where cred's due 🙌
@@ClaytonYatescarenthusiast yes really. you dont need to show everyone you have bad taste

SO much better than a boring grey/silver/black dull-mobile.
Amazing! The sound is incredible and I love the color combo!
I saw you guys up there filming this one. That car sounds so damn good. Color is great too 🔥
Oh my. That sound. Well this makes future modding and purchases a little more interesting. In one of the latest podcasts I think you mentioned they have an option to do something similar with the 4.0 in the GTS now as well?
Epic combo and idea for a sleeper
I can't stop giggling at the sound that shiny pink thing makes!😂 Well done on the build and the teamwork, Matt! Simply impressive! I was debating getting a Spyder over my 2018 Touring. Now, you make me regret it!
Man, you guys picked an epic day to film! Personally, I love your spec and think it works. Great car and great video!
The wheels are worth more than both of my cars. Without the tires…
Matt provides the longest explanation ever as to why he actually likes auto rev match. Way to pull that out of him Matt! Love the car and video. Thumbs way up.
OMG, best I've heard in my life, and the spec and the build...man you have the dream car of all dreamcars
Congrats Matt, you deserve this all day. What a car, and what a great build.
Jeezus that thing sounds MONSTEROUS
Sounds incredible.
Such a beautiful car. Great work getting up there to get such amazing shots.
This spec is amazing. Great choices all around.
I LOVE this color combo. You need to be secure about yourself to pull this off. I've been impressed with some unique color combos from YT Car influencers lately. Getting away from the boring shades of grey, Blacks, whites...even blues, which sometimes turns into a catch-all.
Absolutely lovely. The color combo is daring and classy. My only gripe, were I in your shoes, is the need to add octane booster at every fill-up. That's the only thing keeping me from considering a 4.5 setup for my 991.2 GT3 Touring. I would definitely take up the homie from M-Engineering's offer to tune it for 91-octane.
991.2 touring is the absolute dream. Currently own a 718 gt4 but one day a gt3 touring will be mine, one way or the other
Such a pretty shape and that powertrain sounds amazing 😮
Congrats Matt! I've got one on order which I'll get in a few months. Can't wait! Life car for sure.
Wow the DeMan motor sounds so damn good. Way better than a stock motor car with any exhaust setup.
It is the aftermarket exhaust that make most of the sound difference. With the output increase from the power train, De Man would never use a restrictive stock setup. This one has FabSpeed headers, high flow cats, and stock muffler.
Love the car Matt. If you like the color that's all that matters.
I personally like dark grey metallics, and I'll admit it's a boring color but hides dirt super well. I'd avoid black wheels at all costs.
Interior looks perfect. All the mods are great.
Looks like a well sorted car.
After hearing about the car on the podcast over the last year or so, I didn't think I would like it (Frozenberry with red interior). But wow. That car is absolutely stunning! Well done, Matt!
after listening to so many podcasts, and hearing about it for ages it seems: this is my first time seeing the color. love it.
The calipers need to be painted black actually. It is an OEM PCCB caliper colour (together with yellow). But what I wanted to highlight is how thoughtful the paint scheme of the whole car is. Car paint = f(red, gold). Then you have gold (champagne) wheels and red calipers, as if you have deconstructed tha paint of the car into its two distinct base colours.
I agree, black might be the way to go on this car. That body color and those wheels really need to stand on their own.
Amazing sound! It would be interesting to see a review on a car with just the gear ratio changes.
Check out Tedward's youtube channel. He reviewed a 718 Spyder with the gear ratio changes only.
@@XR4turbo Thanks!!
Excellent ride Matt. Beautiful. Congratulations
Congratulations Matt! Incredible spec!
Hey Matt! A POV video driving this car would be amazing.
Does Deman offer a lower compression ratio option that doesn’t require 98 octane? I’m not in the market, but if I was, that’d be the one hangup for me. Aside from that very minor nitpick, what a friggin’ car!
They had a world level tuner on the podcast who said hes gonna work with Deman to see what they can do far as regular pump goes.
The wheel color really makes the color shine, i’ve never heard a porsche like that either what an excellent build
What a cool car! Big congrats - and cudos for choosing a different color, and making the looks your own.
in a stock GTS, I'm pretty sure turning traction off disables rev match. is this no longer true after Deman gets their hands on it?
In a GTS, Rev matching is only on in Sport mode. Standard mode and Sport Plus mode disable it. Spyders don’t have the mode mannetino though.
@@neilturner6749 both sport and sport plus have rev match in a Cayman or Boxster GTS. it's been a minute since I've been in a Spyder, so can't recall all of the differences
Props to Matt for voiding his factory warranty so early. 🤣
Deliciously OEM+ all throughout, and that engine note is absolutely to die for!
i love the colour. its perfect. the exhaust note sounds amazing as well
This car is insane! What a creative color choice that turns out to be epic! The sound in sport mode is beautiful. And who knew they had an option to change the much hated gear ratios? And those immediate revs are intoxicating. This is one of the cars I would spec and order even if I won the Lottery! Congrats Matt.👍
Love the color. I'm not much of a spyder guy, so I'd have a 911. Cayman would be second choice. Something about having my head exposed I don't care for.
Are you very very ugly then, Sir? 😀
@@neilturner6749 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Sounds beautiful, a deep Flat 6 wail. Love the wheels too
You can never go wrong with Fabspeed exhaust systems and well done on integrating it with Porsche stock mufflers ... sound is off the charts! Mods on engine and transmission are perfect ... again well done!!!
I actually like the 718, I think mid-engine is the way to go. Engine sounds awesome. The color is a little strange for me, but hey, it's your car, you can do whatever you want with it. Nice car
A python green 718 gts with the DeMann transmission for me, please!
I love the colour, it suits the car so much! It make it look like a much older “classier” car even tho it’s 15miles old! I’ve never seen a colour like this before but I fell in love instantly
Matt, that Porsche is absolutely stunning. Enjoy every moment behind the wheel. You deserve to enjoy the fruits of your labor & I’ve been a fan since the Garage 419 days.
