@@cardboard2nighti think a lot of people struggle to define abuse, that’s why. In reality abuse is pretty simple - it’s an effort to take and to maintain control over someone’s life. Sometimes ppl behave in controlling ways because nobody is perfect and it stems from insecurity, but if it happens punctionally and there’s an effort to corre t this behavior it’s not a huge deal. But sustained struggle for control is abuse. Op’s husband is abusive and she doesn’t even realise that.

Yeah her husband definitely has some issues (almost seems like he's a narcissist). Then checkers chick compared it to brother & sister, WTF. Also I don't see a problem with 5 year age difference not like it was with my parents as my mother was 19 & my dad 30 when they started dating which is just nuts. I mean I'm 4yrs older than my fiance I don't see the issue sometimes just sometimes you don't find someone exactly your age that you're meant to be with & if it's within 5yrs age difference I don't see a issue. As a 19yr old female I know 19yr old male was not it, very immature, lol. I'm in my 40s & have been through so much it could be a Jerry springer episode with what my p.o.s. exs but my road lead me to my fiance & I wouldn't have it any other way.

I was more getting a co-dependent vibe. Codependency sometimes comes up in couples where one person does everything and the other has learned helplessness. (Ex. A partner who won’t plan any dates or know anything about the kids medical/school info).
Each partner thinks they have no control over their role so it’s hard to get out of. Especially it you haven’t had to find a job of your own for 20 years, it’s gonna feel scary to try to find one on your own now. (Not to say that he shouldn’t, but it’s like a codependent thing that keeps them stuck. I mean, OP didn’t even mention discussing with him how she doesn’t like it)

if op really wanted to help while married or divorced to him, she does need to communicate everything she feels, make him get his own job, and send him to therapy

The story about the husband following his wife from job to job for 20 years is TERRIFYING to me. What are the odds that this guy is just naturally skilled at all the exact same things as her to the extent that he could succeed in being accepted by all the same employers and degree programs for that long? Pretty low. That makes me think that in addition to controlling, he's really good at convincing people to let him do things they wouldn't otherwise let him do, like the way he convinced the principal to allow an untrained, strange man in the classroom full of kids in order to shadow his wife(!!!). I hope the response to this letter was a wakeup call for OP and she gets out but it seems likely that even if she leaves the relationship, she'll continue to have a stalker.

I was engaged to a guy that acted sort of like the guy in the second story. It is 100% a control thing. He would leave his job and come sit right outside of the door of my job to watch me. The store/coffee shop front was solid glass and I could see him watching me for hours. I finally (after weeks) had a friend (huge guy) go out and pretend to be security to tell him to leave. A few months later he snapped and put his hands on me and bruised my face- it was over immediately. Control was absolutely his motivator for all of his actions.

@@highdefinition450 why not ask them "why did you go on a second date with this guy lmao wtf"? It's the same answer: we never know what someone is capable of and relationships require trust that each partner has the other's best interests at heart. It's impossible to know whether someone will abuse that trust, we can only trust that they won't. It's frankly disrespectful to criticize how long they were in the relationship when relationship dynamics change all the time. People change.
And once you're in an abusive relationship, imagine trying to plan an escape when the partner is actively monitoring your travel, work, laptop, phone, friendships, habits, etc. And add onto that trying to do so if you have a shared mortgage, bank account, CHILDREN. After being attacked again and again and again by someone so close to you, your entire outlook fundamentally changes in ways you can't even imagine.
It is an immense feat of strength, independence, and determination whenever someone is able to leave an abusive relationship. That feat deserves respect.

I hated having my camera on in high school, and I'm in college now and starting to more realize why it bothers me in particular. I have tourettes and I'm autistic and I still mask a lot, so when I have to have my camera on, I lose a part of my focus because it's an extra layer of mentally controlling my tourettes and masking my autistic traits. It's either I focus on controlling my behaviors or I'm embarrassed by my behaviors being screened to everyone. So, for me, camera off just means I focus easier.

I think part of the reason for it being uncomfortable is because she was forced to do it, and people would see it without getting a heads up. I'm very casual with friends breastfeeding when you keep talking. That's normal in my country. But you usually give some kind of heads up. A little "she's gotta feed" or "gotta pump". So it's more the unexpectedness combined with knowing someone pushed her to do it when she didn't want to that gives that feeling. At least that's what I hope. I know some people in the US are quite odd about it though so who knows.

For context, I relate to your situation immensely. That said, I will say that last sentence is unfortunately not likely to be the case. Their lives will always be better because the system is built to maintain their quality of life and prevent yours from improving. For example: 1) they don't have student loans, so more of their paychecks go into their bank accounts, and 2) their parents have already paid off their houses, so they only have to pay like 10% of what you pay for your rent (or insanely unreasonable mortgage payments) each month -- that's like an additional $1000-2000 each month in discretionary income to spend on vacations, new cars, retirement, healthy food, etc.
This is why we need an effective system of wealth redistribution -- even something as simple as an inheritance tax (without a readily-available loophole -- as the case is now). Or even graduated property taxes similar to income taxes so the property wealthy pay proportionally more than those buying a modest townhouse.

Don't pry, don't push or you'll get an answer you're not going to like or expect. But OP was in the wrong for being as harsh and letting their feelings of resentment through. If he gets divorced, he'll have gotten his whole degree for nothing.

Unfortunately, it's not an outlandish guess that they would resort to violence

The superbowl ticket story reminds me of how at my mother's funeral, my grandma stole money donated to me (then early 20s) to take care of my two much younger siblings (teens) since our mom just died. My grandma is a huge gambling addict and it took me a long time to come around to that. The group of people donating (my mother's coworkers) gave the money to my grandma to give to me after the funeral since all of my mother's children were at the front doing a religious ritual (as per my mother's wishes).

Re the son/mom interview: I agree with the comment that OP should have given the feedback to the son as well as the mom. I doubt she would pass that along and the son needs to hear it.

One thing with 150-country Jack is that he mentioned that Jack pressed him about "what's wrong?" We all have things that tick us off or pet peeves or such, but if he's quiet and trying to avoid answering, if Jack kept pushing for an answer, then some of it is on Jack... if he's going to have a problem with the answer, don't push for it.

EXACTLY! i was looking for someone else who noticed this. i think it’s wrong to assume that OP was jumping at the bit to just put this guy down. he clearly just wanted to mind his business, and the fact that all three of them sided with jack on that one irked me quite a lot.

YUP Jack literally went out of his way to needle this person just... existing instead of fawning over his "accomplishment"? Their take on this was not it

Came here to say this. OP was drinking, not bringing it up, until the topic changed and he could rejoin the conversation. But Jack pushed the damned point and OP finally lost it, justifiably. Maybe let someone who has known OP longer handle it.

But we also don't know exactly what happened. This is coming from OP's POV, so he could be telling the story in is favor, and based off that, you can't assume that Jack was as rude about as OP said.

About the last storty, Sarah's observation was absolutely right. If their work was related to financial services, this gesture of the superbowl tickets, albeit probably made from kindness, can be viewed as conflict of interest, and it's usually discouraged ethically speaking. Good stuff in this video!

9:00 i worked at a child amusement park in a mall and a guy got mad at me because i wouldn't give him free tokens for his kids. He wrote on the tip line and said "ZERO" really loud, which was strange because i was a cashier and i didn't normally get tips anyway.
Luckily the next guy in line saw and gave me $20 in cash because the guy on front was such an a hole 😂
