God, the part I love the most about that is the pen caps. That is the absolute, most amazingly petty move. The $5 they claimed for the pen caps could easily buy those pens, but instead just leave them there to have their ink dry and be a pain in the ass.

something kind of similar happened to me with my ex. him and his friends were doing a bonfire and asked me to pitch in for beer. they bought the beer and when i showed up some random girl who didn’t pitch in was drinking like crazy and i didn’t even get offered a beer. this girl was literally in the middle of the group of guys CHUGGING beer. some of the other girls there didn’t even get offered a beer either despite putting in their part. just disgusting behavior ..

Better than my friend who borrowed my shoes one time on vacation because her heel broke and I was the only friend who packed more than one pair of shoes… She wore them to D! $n€y a bunch of times (she would go like once or more a week). Finally a few months later, I had to ask for them back and they were ruined.
She did not pay me back for them. I loved those shoes.

The third story with the cake, the friend isn't quirky, she's just a Capital B. Borrowing a dress and then giving someone money doesn't mean you purchased it if it wasn't for sale in the first place. The girl's mother apparently taught her if you pay people they leave you alone.

4th story: it's so weird that this woman was using her friend "not going to prom" as an excuse that she wouldn't enjoy the event when THEYRE TWENTY NINE. ITS BEEN MORE THAN A DECADE SINCE PROM.

Yeah and she's a part of a book club, meaning that she's most likely into cosplay and would dress up for the ball for that specific purpose. Also, the asshole was planning a masquerade ball, without realizing how effing uncomfortable those gowns were going to be after just 20 minutes, an hour tops. By the halfway point, everyone was going to look at the girl dressed casual like she's a freaking genius.
That "friend not invited" story really cut deep. I remember my friend not inviting me to his costume party, which I found out about when pictures were posted on FB. When I confronted him about it, he said it was cos I was too poor.

Same. I wasn't invited to a wedding and all of my other friends in the friend group were. As they were all very very beautiful and like to be fancy, I suspected it was because of aesthetics as well, but I never confronted them. We're not friends anymore.
It's sad because we all went to uni together and I always made effort to socialise. I went on exchange with that same guy so it wasn't like he was unaware that I couldn't make things possible on a budget. I only noticed in retrospect really how poor of a friend he was: he'd offer to help with things like grabbing food from the canteen (I mean badger me into accepting his charity) but then he tried to embarrass me in front of company as if I'd begged him for it. I put a stop to that real quick. And it wasn't like he was significantly richer either.
I guess it's how they class you and treat you accordingly that hurts the most.

The dress code ballgown one was astounding...like- I have a friend who is more comfortable in sweats, and for my birthday (knowing how much I care about clothes and themes) she asked how I'd like for her to dress, to which I joked, "As long as it isnt a snowsuit!" and her as a joke got there with an actual snowsuit on and a banger outfit underneath. They could have had so much fun getting ready for it and her friend could have tried new things if that was her speed
She basically responded to her that she was gonna ignore the dress code if she was invited. I feel like everyone is ignoring that.

My Uncle Tim drinks ONLY Budweiser. He keeps it stocked at different family member's houses around town so he always has it ready to drink no matter where he is. My wife and I just bought our first home. The first time he came over, he brought a 12 pack to keep here for any future visits.

For the story about not inviting the friend to not ruin the aesthetic: Prom is a big event for most people, but isn't that important to some people. She may not have gone because she just didn't think it was worth dressing up for what she might have seen as just a school event. The book club, however, is likely something she cares about considering she is a part of it. In addition, her friend is throwing the party, so it's entirely possible she would think a party her friend is throwing for something she presumably cares about is something worth dressing up for.
Tbf she did say she was intending to go in her regular clothes. It was still wrong to not have invited her though, but telling her that dressing up was mandatory. The only scenario where I think not inviting her would have been okay is if she had a history of showing up in regular clothes to events with an explicit dress code

We have no real way of knowing whether she would’ve dressed up or not because her OP never gave her the choice. All we have to go on is OP’s assumptions. I agree with everything else you said but the intention to violate the dress code for the event was never confirmed unless I missed something?

But tbf it sounds like maybe it wasn't clear in the invite whether costumes were optional or mandatory. So my question is, if she'd gotten an explicit "costumes are mandatory" invite, would she have a) come in costume, b) not come because she didn't want to dress up, or c) ignored the request and come in regular clothes. If she has a past history of doing c) I sure as hell wouldn't have invited her at all. If not, I would have invited her with that explicit request.

As a person who has been excluded from a lot of things, people always find out, so that one comment that was like “if you just made it to where she couldn’t find out” people will always find out one way or another

Well, that's weird. When i got invited to the party where it's a big crowded one, i wouldn't last for 10 min and started to sneaked away from it. And the next day, nobody remembered that i was on the party😅
The one with the book club. As someone who didn’t go to their prom, it was so expensive to go, and I had to rent my graduation gown, which took priority. Now, also as someone who doesn’t like dressing up, I agree with chanse: just talk to your friend! Tell them what you plan and that dress code is required. But the thing that gets me is how OP talks about what her friend wears and not “dressing up”. Her friend feels comfortable and confident and OP just let her know in the worst way what she thinks of her.
What if friend shows up anyways in regular clothes and then the friend would be asked to leave which is an even bigger altercation.

But she didn't talk with her, and if her friend was a good friend she'd either have said she wasn't comfortable and was fine not going OR dress up, even if it was out of her comfort zone. I know we have limited info, but the way the OP described what she thought of her friends 'lack' of dressing up is what I think makes her the asshole, not necessarily just not inviting her to a party.

If the friendship was ever genuine, they would not simply focus on what they had in common. They would also confront the stark differences between each other.
If they had always been honest with each other, none of these would happen.

In some cultures its actually considered rude to interrupt people's conversations and whatnot at a gathering to say goodbye so "ghosting" is actually normal. But agreed that every situation and ever party is different.
The second story girl and her friends gives me the idea that she knew that OP was in love with her. She used this thought before because she was banking on him still being infatuated with her that he would just comply instead of taking the beer with him.

@@griffin1155 Yeah, the only thing I disagree with is people acting like 18-19 year olds are still teenagers. Legally, once you are 18+ you are an adult. Sure, it is a bit odd for someone his age to flirt with people that age, but it ain't illegal or wrong.

I'm autistic so I never want to announce I'm leaving in a way where I have to say goodbye to everyone individually and hug the people who want to be hugged (ultimate nightmare scenario). These days I just yell "I'm going home, bye everybody" and bolt out the door as people respond. That way I wont be TA by leaving them wondering where I've gone, but I can also make a quick escape.

the "26 year old party" guy reminds me of someone I sadly had the pleasure of knowing for a few years, and he was about like 27 years old or so when I was a freshman (still in college) and he would still be in an org I'm in, and while yeah grad students were allowed to be in it that's in, but he was graduated and kept coming by and creepily hitting on the freshman and sophmore girls, and no one told him off when they should've since he pretty much stalked one girl I knew all the way back to her dorm before we had to physically get him away from her and out of the org, its so disgusting
Book ball story: The OP and a commenter said she didn't go to prom....but she WAS INVITED TO PROM. The entire senior class was invited to prom. She was not excluded specifically from prom. She was able to make a choice not to attend prom. She was specifically excluded from this party and insulted when she questioned it.

As someone who listens to far to many true crime podcasts, my personal belief is that you should tell at least one person when you are leaving an event. That does not necessarily need to be someone else at the event. You can text a friend or family member who isn’t there ‘hey I’m leaving X’ and then text them again when you get home.

There was a guy at my college who continued hosting parties in the town even though he was 26 and his creepy ass roommate would always try to get the freshman girls drunk - we were so glad when they moved
I was a 24 year old still in my college town, no friends. It never crossed my mind to go to college parties, that is a nuts thing to do.
When it comes to leaving parties, I highly recommend telling one person, so somebody knows where you are.
If you just leave, I think the actual risk is that people might think you’re in danger, especially if they can’t reach you or find you anywhere, so it’s good to let people know where you are, and you can do that without saying goodbye to the entire party
That’s exactly what I was thinking! I always participate in the buddy system and if someone disappears and no one knows where they are then people start to panic

So he wasn't invited to the party per se, BUT ALSO she didn't offer to pay him back the money for the beer seemingly when they were talking about it, or when she was dribing him back to his place... Just a kiss on the cheek and a fake 'thanks'. She took advantage of the fact he had a crush on her at one point. She's an AH.
For story two, I have to agree with Mac. This girl hits up op out of the blue, says "you should use YOUR money to BUY ME BEER, but you can't come to the party and hangout" I'm too petty to be even a little kind about this; if they go low, go lower, go to hell 🤷♀🤷♀

When I was 15, my best friend had an older brother who was 25…this older brother had friends well into their 30’s. Their older friend group would specifically go out of there way to hangout with us 15 years old girls (yes, NOT the other way around) and his older friends would try to get our numbers, take us out, come to our high school parties. At the time it didn’t seem strange but looking back on it I feel so sick. It was common in the semi-rural/suburban area we were in, these were not the only adult men that would infiltrate high school parties.

One time it was around my birthday and both of my brothers bought a cheap grocery store cake. To be honest it was really sweet and I wasn’t a big fan, but I just really appreciated the fact that they took the time to go to the store by the cake surprise me with it and then sing me happy birthday.

I 100% agree with the person that hosted the college party. I used to living in a party house and worked at a big bar in the city and I often had friends 19-30 bc of the job. We are all great friends but if one person was a creep/annoying they were often not invited to the house.

The only time I’ve specifically had a Budweiser was a tall boy for a Halloween costume. I was a “beer vampire” and I “came to drink your Bud”. It’s actually a lot better than bud lite.

Growing up my father always drank Budweiser. To the point that as a toddler, I was in the cart in the grocery store and as my mom and I passed a massive stack of Budweiser packs I pointed and squealed “Daddy’s juice!!!!”. My mom loves telling that story.

The first story, my family is Mexican, so there are A LOT of us, and you say goodbye to EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM. It don’t matter if you know them or not, you say goodbye. You give everyone a hug, and usually you stay for a little longer just to talk, when you say “I’m leaving” you mean “I’m leaving in an hour”
