I was in the petroleum business for 40 years working in refining, pipelines, terminaling, and additives. Lake's presentation is the best I have ever seen and he is correct on every point he made. Everyone should see this presentation, put in particular those who are running high compression, high performance engines.
@@TotalSeal Lake, so....the slide about octane at altitude. 85 is okay to run at altitude if the car specs "Regular"? This has been a hotly debated topic. Thanks. .

Reminds me once again just how much of driving [until recently...] is trying to manage a controlled explosion...
1) Initially thought: this was going to be a joke, talking about fuel for over an hour. 2) Final thought: I want more. Going to listen to this a second time at some point. Thank you and geat job!
This is great and confirms everything I have been doing for nearly two decades. However, I have never seen a product label, SDS, MSDS, or SPS that cites PEA. I have used TECHRON which the manufacturer describes as the same additive package as in their TOP TIER compliant fuels but the important constituents of the formulation are cited as Proprietary. Same for any other products I’ve looked at over the years. We really need a list of specific brands that can provide the correct dose of PEA, since the consumer cannot tell by reading the label or data sheets.

Very enjoyable! But what he missed was explaining how even with PEA you can't clean the intake valves via the fuel tank additives or Top Tier fuels on Direct Injected Engines. That only works on Port Fuel Injected engines.
@@tomzphone recent yes and most gasoline engines produced today are as well. But 911SC,911G,964 and 993's are all Port Fuel Injected so the additives will clean their intake valves.

Great video. I really appreciate the comments about the octane number being different in different countries. Where do I find a good chart to see the conversions? Also, if you have an older Porsche that might have had an engine rebuild and a non standard compression ratio, how can you look up the octane quality required for your engine?
If your engine has been modified with an increased compression ratio, you will need a higher octane fuel. There is not a chart that correlates compression ratio to octane because there are too many variables to be absolute.
I’m on a road trip with my new to me as of 3 days ago ‘17 Macan 2.0L from SC to MO. After watching this I stoped by the store and grabbed Lucas for the oil and a bottle for the gas. Hi. Now, I'm not a PCA member as I live in New Zealand, but I thought this might be of interest ref: this extremely good video. I wanted to see if I could improve my engine performance (996 mk2) without messing with, but complimenting Porsche factory mechanical design ... Around 2000kms after a full rebuild (IMS) I had my ECU reprogrammed to run on 98/100 octane. This has made an extraordinary difference to an already fabulous engine. Increase to 361HP and and 412 NM (Rolling dyno). Fuel consumption is also much improved. (Town11.3 ltrs /9.3 per 100 kms long run). Of course, this may also be due in part, because Porsche underestimate their engine power from the factory? Then, there's ethanol additive ... what's this for 98/100? So what am I saying? Many years ago I was a Porsche workshop manager in Brooklyn, and I've been a Porsche fanatic ever since ... and I wouldn't want you lot to miss out on any of the fun!
This was an EXCELLENT episode. So much great information from Lake Speed, Jr. Based on this news of 15% ethanol, I would love to hear him come back and talk about it. I know the advice would be buy ethanol free gas, but that's not always possible. So what should we be doing to combat this to not destroy our motors that were not designed for this? Do we have to be more careful when pushing our cars this summer? Do we need to make sure we're putting in a really good PEA additive at each fill up this summer? If so, love some recommendations on any particular brands. Thank you.
Great video. On the matter of cold weather starts (whether after storage or on a daily driver) I’ve always wondered if old school block heaters would enable us to avoid a lot of those cold weather hazards? Would be great to understand that.
So let me get this straight, we are talking about clean valves from top tier gas and fuel additives, but aren't most recent Porsche engines \ direct injection? Isn't the fuel going directly into the cylinder? How the heck is it going to clean the valves?
I filled up at Shell with Premium for my high-performance motorcycle and it fell on its face. Had to purchase an octane improver to use it. This can happen anywhere. I filled up at a station that probably didn't have much use for Premium. Another factor to consider.
I own "ordinary" cars and a pickem' up truck but I learned so much. One commentary I heard one time was that in the summer with heavy traffic on interstates some big stations got deliveries as much as seven times a day. If I live close to an interstate exit would it be better to get my gas there or one I normally go to closer to home? Just curious.
Very informative video, never knew about the PEA in the additives, now I have to look for which ones have PEA. About not refueling when the tanker is at the station filling the gas station tanks. I understand about the bad stuff getting mixed around in the fuel tank, but doesn't the fuel pump pull from the lower part of the storage tanks? Doesn't make sense for the fuel pumps to pull fuel from the top of the storage tanks. Which would mean, there must not be too much bad stuff sitting at the bottom...unless the very bottom is emergency storage in the tank to prevent the pumps from pumping dry, and the pick point for the fuel pumps are a couple of feet above the bottom...is that correct? Does anyone know for sure where the fuel pump pick up point is in the storage tanks?
Even that I used always Top tier fuel, when I reached 35k miles I had to pour in some injectors cleaner because my fuel economy was getting bad. After the treatement everything got back to normal. Top tier has it's limitts I guess.
Very informative presentation. Unfortunately, where I live we can now only buy ethanol blended (10%) fuel, and summer cars are put into storage for 8 months of winter. So, for those of us who have absolutely no choice but to have have ethanol blended fuel in our tank while in winter storage, is there anything else we can do in addition to adding stabilizer and having the tank full (which most folks around here already do)?
@@TotalSeal Thank you very much for your reply and advice. I haven’t seen the Driven Injector Defender here (in Canada) but it appears that Stabil 360 has PEA as well as corrosion protection and that product is available locally. I’ll confirm with them that it does, indeed, have PEA. Thanks again for the presentation and advice!
So let me get this straight, we are talking about clean valves from top tier gas and fuel additives, but aren't most recent Porsche engines direct injection? Isn't the fuel going directly into the cylinder? How the heck is it going to clean the valves? It isn't
For me to take out my 911 I need to re arrange parking for 2 other cars, It takes about 5 mins from when I start the 911 till the other 2 cars are re-parked and I can leave home in the Porsche. Is that ok or do I need to start the 911, get out of the driveway drive for 15 mins, come back and re-park the other cars?
I let some ethanol gas sit in the tank of a vintage 2-stroke once for several years. Guess what happened? Started right up and ran like new. How is that possible? Most 2-stroke oil suppresses corrosion and has it's own additives to prevent separation. We had another bike, a notably fussy German Maico (the Porsche of dirt bikes) with 12 year old fuel in the aluminum tank. No corrosion or damage, but at that point it did run funny. But! Porsches don't get premix, so ethanol will definitely be a problem if you let your car sit. I still eagerly await the first 2-stroke GT3. Imagine the sound.
Tryin' to hang, but an "Executive Summary" version might be a win-win! People can always refer back to this extended portion if desired. Fantastic info tho! Gonna ensure we use the Top Tier fuel when possible and the non-ethanol when we can. I try not to get that ethanol crap, but its tough!!!😀
'Premium' fuel is a bit of a con, as it's not difficult to raise octane levels, certainly not the 20 percent extra cost. I'd guess it cost them almost nothing, Or am I wrong? I often am.
Good question. Don’t blend a leaded fuel in cars that have emissions control equipment and O2 sensors. You are better off using an octane booster. The Driven Defender + Booster is an octane booster and PEA detergent additive.
Indulge another question, thank you. I grew up in upstate NY and we had brutal winters and we always used a product called "Heet" in the cold weather to remove any frozen particles in the gas and for easier starting, but since I have been down South I still use it occasionally and my friends have never heard of the stuff but I guess it's a habit with me. Am I nuts (my wife thinks so) and p....ing my money away?
Thank you for the great video. Lake mentioned idling in cold weather is bad. So it’s not recommended or needed to start the car and let it idle a few minutes in the mornings before driving (specifically in temps of mid 20s and 30s)?
Some good tips on maintenance. totally off base about knock. First, "pre-ignition" doesn't happen. The proper technical term is autoignition aka spontaneous ignition. The pressure spike always happens several degrees after TDC when you have peak cylinder pressure, never before spark timing. Logically, how can you manage something that happens before the spark plug fires by changing spark timing? "Hot spots" and carbon are also not factors. Even the PhD at SAE don't know what's going on. They'll only tell you to use the octane the engine needs to not knock...and a very good synthetic oil.
Here is the million dollar question. Is Costco premium considered a top tier gasoline. They advertise they are. Lake is correct. The companies all buy the same RBOB. Then they add the alcohol and proprietary additive package. The trucks often have residual fuel between loads. 100-250 gallons per delivery. There is also residual fuel in the hose at the pump. Good stuff guys. Sold my 991 and recently bought a C8. The car is a blast. Give it a try if you get a chance. See you at the track.
Yeah but then you'll have to decide if you want the low charge, medium or high charge electricity and you'll be back to the same old dilemma. Think I'm kidding?
If I had the patience to listen to someone run-on and on for an hour, I would still be married. After 20 minutes, I went outside for a cigarette. Came back in about 20 minutes later… still talking; didn’t even know I was gone. But somehow, it’s my fault and I need to pay more attention to, something. Yep… Wonder what’s for dinner… Nothing… Shit.
And yet time and time again I watch guys pull porsche motors apart and they are spotless inside. I would love to know the ratio of people who pick these certain oils and fuel vs the ones that just grab Mobil1 or Amzoil and fill up at their local gas station and don't bother with Porsche specialized stuff. I still laugh at the YT video on synthetic for old Porsches. This is a dealership service department joke to sell more services. You have to ask yourself why a porsche service manager is a commission based job. This is an age old ploy to sell more oil and additives. What a waste of money for nothing. No one ever asks the question... how MUCH more moisture will a certain fuel hold than another fuel because you'll get a deer in the headlights look. They won't know the answer because if they did, it would be inconsequential. These poor guys have drunk the koolaid and lost their common sense and don't have grandfathers to tell them any different. Change the filter and use the same oil for 10-15k miles. Or... do your own experiment. You'll be surprised at the results. Porsches aren't delicate Swiss time pieces. Drive them and they will last you a lifetime. Ever wondered why you see all the 25-30 year owned cars for sale that run perfectly? What happened to the reputation of a German manufacturer? These cars are tough. Stop trying to make them seem like cream puffs.

'Premium' fuel is a bit of a con, as it's not difficult to raise octane levels, certainly not the 20 percent extra cost. I'd guess it cost them almost nothing, Or am I wrong? I often am.
what about using 100 Octane gas mixed with 91 Octane gas in California?
VP racing fuels has no ethanol
Good question. Don’t blend a leaded fuel in cars that have emissions control equipment and O2 sensors.
You are better off using an octane booster. The Driven Defender + Booster is an octane booster and PEA detergent additive.
Great presentation - Thank You!
Great question. Those products are not needed in the “warmer” southern winters. Those products are not needed anymore.
@@TotalSeal thanks. There over two bucks a bottle now so I will save a little money.
Does Gas pump have to have Top Tier Label?

Are high tier labels required?

What's a good PEA additive?
your a gas god know some of this your right on
40:10 Super true👍👍👍👍
Thank you for the great video. Lake mentioned idling in cold weather is bad. So it’s not recommended or needed to start the car and let it idle a few minutes in the mornings before driving (specifically in temps of mid 20s and 30s)?
I see that he answered it right at the end of the video.
Thanks for watching!
Awesome video
Glad you enjoyed it. Be sure to subscribe.
what is the minimum octane fuel you would use on a 1983 911sc...
Top Tier 93 or 91 would be recommended.
52:22 "long term storage"? LOL wtf?
Excellent!
Glad you liked it!
Is it possible to have top tier non ethanol gas? If not, should top tier take priority over searching for non ethanol?
Good luck finding non ethanol fuel 😆😆😆 VP racing has it at $60 for 5 gal
Australia uses, 91,95,98 rating
93 US = 98 Australia
does someone have a TLDR of this video?
Here is the million dollar question. Is Costco premium considered a top tier gasoline. They advertise they are. Lake is correct. The companies all buy the same RBOB. Then they add the alcohol and proprietary additive package. The trucks often have residual fuel between loads. 100-250 gallons per delivery. There is also residual fuel in the hose at the pump. Good stuff guys. Sold my 991 and recently bought a C8. The car is a blast. Give it a try if you get a chance. See you at the track.
If they have the Top Tier logo on the pump, then the fuel should be Top Tier.
That whole thing about gas delivery mixing up the phase separated junk in gas station tanks is BS.
Makes me want to buy my first electric car
Yeah but then you'll have to decide if you want the low charge, medium or high charge electricity and you'll be back to the same old dilemma. Think I'm kidding?
If I had the patience to listen to someone run-on and on for an hour, I would still be married. After 20 minutes, I went outside for a cigarette. Came back in about 20 minutes later… still talking; didn’t even know I was gone. But somehow, it’s my fault and I need to pay more attention to, something. Yep…
Wonder what’s for dinner…
Nothing…
Shit.
I'm even more confused now :(
And yet time and time again I watch guys pull porsche motors apart and they are spotless inside.
Could have said what he said in half the time . Boring and just over done.
