In 14 years since I first used it, I've never seen a zbrush video so perfectly capture the basics of sculpting in zbrush without being "scary" to someone who would be new to it. Very very well done. There's been plenty of basics videos, but I feel like all of them had something that made people go "I'm not so sure I can grasp that." but the way you approached it, it doesn't make it look easy, but it makes it look attainable.
Love your content Uncle Jessy, you've been a huge help with getting me started in my resin printing journey. Now I can print my Zbrush models! Let me know if you have any questions getting started in zbrush. I'd be happy to return the favor.
I love your easy to understand tutorial videos. While I have pretty decent experience in zbrush, looking at your videos has helped me improve my overall technique and how I approach projects more efficiently and with higher quality over the last few years.
The part about lowering the intensity of the clay buildup for a clean sculpt was really helpful, i was avoiding that brush because of the result i was getting. Thanks a lot!
The control that give you the clay buildup with alphas is incredible, I can't sculpt right without that It is what difference and beginner from a Pro, people who doesn't use that and creates incredible sculpts exist like gio napkil but It is like 10 times harder, of course for cartoonish characters is different but for realistic sculpts makes a great difference, that is my opinión.
The "smooth alt" brush has been really handy and will not destroy your primary forms. Also, Pablo sells a set of clay brushes and within that pack, there is a knife brush. I tend to use that other than the "dam standard" brush. I'll tend to use "dam standard" to refine the details at the end. These are some tips that have helped me recently. Great video Henning, thanks for the tips!
U r a really good teacher I swear. I’m a beginner and you made the whole process make so much sense to me. Subscribed for the future🔥😍 hope to reach your level one day!
While you can indeed get away with only using those brushes - I would highly recommend learning more of the available ones and even some third party ones (Orb cracks for example). You are making life harder for yourself in the long run. I consider these essential to my workflow - on top of the most important ones listed in the video : Pinch Inflate Move Topological (Crucial in more complex meshes) Smooth Peaks (fantastic to quickly get surface detail) Smooth Cloth (EXCELLENT for one-sided geo to smooth the borders - the only smooth brush that does NOT ignore edges of one-sided geo) SK_Clayfill (cleanup) OrbCracks (one of the finest brushes for harder surface detail, like stone etc) HPolish (this brush was designed to also be used in tandem with TrimDynamic - Define with TrimDynamic, refine with hPolish. Flatten (THE go to brush to quickly "clean" or demolish an area) ZModeler (it's weird but powerful) Planar (great for quickly faceting for rock stone etc) TrimSmoothBorders (another great stone.rock etc faceting brush) SK_Cloth (Superb for manual cloth sculpting quickly) CurveTubeSnap (quickly block out tentacles, appendages, pipes, whatever) CurveTube etc IMM Primitives (quickly block out parts) Cloth brushes (very nice for the dynamics of cloth, liquid etc) Trim Brushes (quickly slice up the mesh) MeshProject (Extract but on steroids) and a few others on occasion. I use all of these on a daily basis, and it would be a huge pain in the ass if they were not available.
Just wanna chime in for the intro to sculpting course mentioned at the end of this video. I got it a few months ago and have gotten a TON out of it. Well worth the small investment for the knowledge you get out of it. Thank you for all the work Henning and the FlippedNormals crew! :)
Watching the top of the UI as you sculpt, I see that you are rapidly and almost instantly shifting draw size. Is it a peripheral allowing you to do this like some kind of slider?
this video pop up in my feed again and I'm sorry to say that the title of this video has held me back for so long that I really regret taking it so seriously. These 6 brushes are only related to the foundation of sculpting as an artistic skill so yes they're far more important than another brushes. But to become proficient in zbrush one must take advantages of whatever brushes that gets the job done.
i would add some extend brush for some brushes, move topology (move brush) to me this is just as important as regular move brush, h polish (trim dynamic), orb crack (dam standard)
I just changed the Device from asio to SPDIF-out (soft blaster z) TNice tutorials improved the soft quality dramatically. I tNice tutorialnk tNice tutorials did the trick!
How are you guys moving or rotating the model when your brush pointer is on the model ?? I mean we have to have our pointer in free space to move or rotate or zoom !!
I do have a question about the type of software, because your using the full version of Zbrush right? But can you get away with all the brushes tips and tricks in this video with something a little more affordable like Zbrush Core? Or what would you recommend doing?
@FlippedNormals, Henning: What brush did you map on key 1? You mentioned you'd typically bind keys 1 through 6 (or 7). But there was no mention of key 1. :)
Hi. i don't know if it's related by this tips. but from the moment i'm doing this, zbrush crashes every single time that i use "ctrl-z" (undo anything). i don't know if someone other has this issue. Please i need your help.
I do need something like zbrush but it just seems like You pay for a bunch of stuff you won’t use. Like most people I see only use like a third or a fourth of all the things it offers. For example you paid for all those brushes but only use 4-6 of them. I’d rather spend $200 and have options I will actually use.
Hey guys, where can I find a place to get good feedback, or constructive feedback, on my sculpts? I am a beginner and I need true opinions on my sculpts so I can learn more.
*Brushes:*
- Move
- Standard
- Damian Standard
- Clay Buildup
- Smooth
- Trim Dynamic
cheers
Damian lmao
Thanks.
inflate > standard by far, its noob thing to put standard over inflate
@@Alexander-mk4qf Standard definitely has its place, especially when you desire sharper forms than what inflate would give you.

clay buildup is pretty much my main brush, so good when you get the hang of it

Decrease depth to 5 and lazy mouse step. It gives really good result
@@miguelm.a7462 You use default alpha for claybuildup the Square one?
That warm fuzzy feeling when you watch a video and already have the six recommended brushes hotkeyed! (plus one extra; Orb Cracks)

Clay Buildup - probably the king of brushes in ZBrush
Once again the instruction here is second to none! Hoping to steal some of this quality for my own videos. Bravo!

Hey FlippedNormals! Curious about the difference between Move and Move Elastic?
It's funny how he says, be careful to accidentaly don't destroy the form with a smooth brush, like there is not Crtl+Z in Zbrush lol !

has the clay buildup brush been renamed in the latest update? can't seem to find it
