The Aptera will be a pretty effective road tripping EV. I can't wait to get my Launch Edition Aptera and take it on a cross-country adventure and put it to the test! Its peak charging speed isn't that great, but it makes up for it with a long range, incredible cargo space, the ability to DCFC with both Tesla Superchargers and CCS (with an adapter), and--most importantly--be the cheapest EV on the road when it comes to cost per mile!

With an unknown drivetrain at this time, and not knowing the status of AWD (which is what I need), it’s anybody’s guess what the new specs will be. I was also surprised by the lasr minute change in the drivetrain, but I am supportive as long as it gets Aptera to production. While I was excited about the In-wheel motors there does seem to be more issues with this system as it is less tested and Aptera can't afford issues with supplychain or reliability.

New drive train, new motor location, redistribution of weights, probably need new suspension settings, and new sytems for torque vectoring and safety testing, all this means more work and delays unless they have had all these worked out already, which is possible cause they have obviously designed a space for inboard motors from the beginning. Was the original early 2010s aptera designed with inboard motors?

Maybe they will still keep the acceleration / vectoring and if the e-axels are induction motors it could make everything more efficient when the iwm rear is added since they could be 1wd when speed and traction are non-issues. IWM was a technical and supply risk so changing is not inherently bad.

The Tesla exists. The Aptera is a hypothetical.
Do you think they're going to reach production? The most recent launch date is mid 2025 which does not look feasible considering that they haven't even built the PI units yet and they haven't announced what motors they're going to use.
As large as a model 3 but only 2 seats. All that space for cargo but there's a weight limit due to the instability of a high mass in a 3 wheel vehicle. It's also wider than standard cars.

At the same stage in corporate history, Tesla had been in much worse financial condition with a vehicle with a far smaller market. They came within an hour of bankruptcy. What saved them was their work in providing Daimler with the battery packs for the EV version of the Smart Car.
At this point in time, Aptera is also working as a supplier for 3rd parties, and has not been shipping defective vehicles. We don't know how things will end up, but Aptera has much more reason to think they will be successful than Tesla did.

I'd really love a vehicle that can have a slow charger built into the roof. That's when a road trip means you won't run out if charge. Considering the Apterra has plenty of room for it it'll be able to fold out "wings". With the specs in mind, a lightweight car that can get you here and there it'll be good. I won't say "better". In my opinion Tesla's are the iPhone of electric cars, where they're a big brand but not everyone follows those. Some prefer android or windows instead of a self sabotaging device that won't last a year.
For the Apterra, given its a smart vehicle it'll protect itself without need for constant online adjustments. I'd really like an offline vehicle.

I try to follow aptera reasonably closely, and what I find is very discouredging, that they dont even look close to having a buidable prototype ready any time soon, some simple calculations I did recently using a video that shows the data when driving, shows that solar alone is going to be way lower than they say. They are very loose with the 'truth' and have found themselves again on a nice little money spinner even without producing anything apart from various prototypes of similar vehicles,
I'm betting that no-one will ever see an aptera in their driveway, I think they have an amazing opportunity to do it, but are squandering away the raised money and really seem not to be taking the building endeavour seriously, way to slow to ever have a chance of production.
